Reminder: No memes, even in comments. Posted: 12 Jul 2020 12:46 AM PDT This is a friendly reminder of Rule #3: Memes, direct image links, and low effort content will be removed. This includes both posts and comments. We've had an uptick in meme comments here, and while we mods do enjoy our memes - some of us actually co-moderate a subreddit for that, /r/hardwarememes - they're not appropriate for /r/hardware. While I might give you the courteousy of a warning, technically you can get a 1-3 day tempban for such things (depending on if it was a toxic comment or a just a jesting comment). So please... refrain from these sort of comments so we don't have to be Nazi mods, OK? [link] [comments] |

Why do GPU manufacturers use AIB partners instead of selling full cards themselves? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:17 AM PDT And how does NVidia avoid conflict of interest with AIBs when they keep all the good binned GPUs for themselves and sell a competing Founder's Edition card? [link] [comments] |

Can H Blank and V Blank any arbitrary value on LCD monitors? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:24 PM PDT My understanding is these serve no purpose whatsoever any more. Then wouldn't monitors have a mode in their EDID which minimizes bandwidth requirements by dropping the blankings to 1 (or 0)? As an example, if you have a non-Thunderbolt USB C dock with USB 3.0 and two video outputs then you can squeeze a 2560x1440@60Hz and a 1920x1080@60Hz in the available bandwidth just by changing the V Blank to 6 for both, the CVT standards prescribe 41 and 31 respectively and then they won't fit. How can a significantly increased console price be pitched to the general public? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:05 AM PDT It appears that both Sony and MS have developed next gen consoles that will be more technically advanced at launch relative to the previous generation, and therefore are expected to be significantly more expensive. For most people on this sub the price increase would be easy to motivate, but how can Sony and MS communicate to the part of their costumers that are less technically literate that they should spending an extra $+100? Realistically the commercials for PS4 and Xbox One already described those consoles as "very powerful and future of gaming", so what new pitch can be used that costumers haven't already heard for the previous generation?
