    Build a PC: Idiot Check

    Build a PC: Idiot Check

    Idiot Check

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:16 AM PDT

Just about to hit the purchase button on parts for my first build but with limited knowledge I thought I'd run it by this Reddit first. Parts as follows: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Asus ROG Strix B550-E Noctua NH-D15 Samsung M.2 1TB Corsair C16 2 x 8gb DDR4 Fractal S2 Case

Power is coming from a 7yr old Corsair CX750 from my old rig. (It's still faultless). Plus the 2TB HDD (thinking about a 2TB SSD but the cost is already above budget). Graphics card is reusing a 1660Ti with a view to upgrading that in 6 months or so when the bank balance allows.

So a combination of reusing and new parts. Anything I'm missing or have overlooked?

    Thanks very much.

Edit: All good advice and pointers. Suffice to say, new PSU ordered! I've actually stuck with the 3800X as its only £15 more than the 3700. Quality sub reddit, thanks again.

Whats the last stable rx 5700xt driver?!

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:28 PM PDT

As above, I've just invested heavily in a new setup which I was hoping would last me a few years - turns out the 2020 drivers are as buggy as hell and are causing me no end of grief.

I have the xfx rx 5700xt thiic III. And I'm currently on febs drviers and feeling low.

    (Update)

As ya'll are asking for specs:

    CPU: Ryzen9 3900, 3.8ghz - 4.6hz boost, 64mb cache, can support 3200mhz ddr4 ram

    Mobo: MSI x570 gaming plus

RAM: corsair vegence 32gb 3600mhz, currently running at 1333mhz 18-18-18-43, (what the bios set on install into the mobo)

    Nvme: adata 512.

GPU: XFX RADEON rx 5700xt thiic III

PSU: corsair rtx 750 gold 80

No voltage adjustments or overclocking performed.

    (Update 2)

24 hours in and I've tried the following:

    • Enabling and disabling XMP.

    • Clean install of all drivers since 19.12.1 right up until 20.8.1, using both DDU and AMDs driver cleaner - even tried the unzip the drivers route.

    • I'm on my 3rd installtion of windows 10 pro, it's up to date.

    • I'v reseated the GPU, RAM, CPU.

    • Plugged in and unplugged every possible combination of cables

    • Moved the NVME drive between slots.

    • Used chained and non-chained power connectors

    • Manually configured DRAM timings from the Ryzen DRAM tuner.

    (Update 3)

    The problem:

So, the issue here is that the card works with the basic windows driver. As soon as the AMD driver is installed the GPU stops, I've also noticed recently that the fans also just stop. I've left it for pver two hours and it's still stays in the same state.

Reboot ans you get to the windows loadong screen and again, the GPU just stops dead along with the fans.

It works in the latest version of Ubuntu 18.04, does not work in Ubuntu 19.04/10, 20.04 or windows 10 with proprietary drovers installed.

    (Update 4)

So, those who said RAM were correct. However, polarbeer/polarbear needs the kudos - it was SOC voltage + lowering the dram freq. Booted first damn time.

Thank you all for putting up with me, and this thread. I'll knock up a blog post on this.

    Water cooling a GPU

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:57 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but I have a custom PC with a nvidia GeForce rtx 2080 and lately I've been having issues over heating and my pc shutting off while gaming(Ark). I found out the fans aren't turning on at all when hitting higher temps so I downloaded MSI afterburner and have to manually turn on the fans that way, I'm wondering if water cooling would be a better option to research. The pc shuts off around 65 degrees Celsius.

Edit: I haven't checked the CPU temps, I'll check once I'm off work and try to give more detail.

Do wrong connections permanently damage PC parts?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 05:26 AM PDT

I'm following the same build as this :

    https://youtu.be/1Zt1P41pjE4

I've just ordered all the components on Amazon. I haven't been able to feel less anxious ever since.

Yes, I have read posts with a million comments saying "It's all an experience, you can do it, just follow the manual, etc". Yeah I get it.

But all I want to know if I somehow I screw up connections, will I burn the components and damage it permanently? This was the same reason I almost ordered a prebuilt PC a day ago. All I want to know at the most what can happen if you REALLY REALLY screw up.

I really don't want to screw up this build. It took me 2-3 years to save for this build. Please help me out.

Prices for gpu's will go down when the new line releases right?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:19 AM PDT

Just the title, I've seen some people say that there is no way that the prices will go down. Anyone have a clear prediction/answer? Thanks

Built my first pc, couldn't be more excited!

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:26 PM PDT

After three years of wanting to build a pc, buying the parts, and giving up because of discouragement from price raises, I finally built a pc I found on PcPartPicker. It was rough putting it all together, I genuinely believed I would end up breaking something, but in the end it powered on and all the ports worked! I'm still waiting on my monitor to arrive, so no testing anything, but when it turned on, the fans started spinning, and the LEDs came on, I realized it was all worth it. I'll update when I get the monitor and test everything.

Edit: Heres a link to the build I did, it is a budget build so its nothing fancy. https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/BnBD4D/entry-level-intel-gaming-build

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:26 PM PDT

I've been lurking here for some time. Now I'm ready to pull the trigger with the new gen consoles around the corner. I'm looking to build something on the upper end of casual. If that makes sense. It's only use will be casual gaming but a wide range of games. Modded Minecraft, dark souls, gta, etc. let me know what you think. Thanks!

    Build upgrade

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:12 PM PDT

Thanks to the folks many years ago for recommending me parts for my first build (https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/9TwbD3), I feel like it's now time for an upgrade. Below is the new list, built upon the older list. I have kept the HDD, GPU, PSU and optical drive in the list for compatibility check. I don't have a budget per se, but I also don't want to overkill my setup. Also like my first build, this would be mainly for games like Cities Skylines and want to pick up Photoshop/Lightroom . What do you think? Any suggestions are welcome!

    New pc builder

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:59 PM PDT

Hi, my friends and I after years of playing console have decided to switch to pc. My friends have a much better understanding of pc's then I do ( Im pretty much new to the entire thing). My friends told me which parts were good for what I was looking for ( something that will run games at good frames and be stable rate) so they were like this is good this isn't. So I ordered the parts and they are gonna help me build it, but I still have tons of questions like what pieces do what and stuff. Are there any good articles or videos you would recommend me? ( I understand no pc lingo as well). I was talking to my friend and he said to ask here so here I am. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to reply really. Thanks and have a great day. :)

YouTube lags when playing a game on another monitor

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:04 AM PDT

I like to play rocket league and watch youtube at the same time, but the youtube video lags like my pc isn't strong enough to handle it. Task manager says that nothing is being overloaded or anything. I have a 2080 super, AMD 3600, 16 gb ram. All my monitors are 60hz, 1 is 4k and the others are 1080p. I have already disabled hardware acceleration in chrome but that did not solve the problem. I have tried to mess around with some GSync settings but haven't found anything to work

    Frame Pacing?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:55 AM PDT

If you were say getting an average of 80 fps what would be an unacceptable 1%/0.1% low? An i5 2500K can get great average fps that even competes/does better than modern 4 cores, but I'm concerned about its frame pacing.

Looking for feedback from more experienced builders

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:19 PM PDT

    Hey all!

I'm considering a new build to replace my 7 year old (first) build. Immediately, I'm looking for a gaming rig that will last me a good few years and will run Microsoft Flight Simulator as well as possible (60fps, 4K)!

The part list I'm looking at is below.

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/9qHHdm

My concerns/questions are mostly around cooling as I don't know much about it. I've read that the 510 elite's airflow is kind of shit. Is it shit enough for me to worry about? The normal 510 is fine if that's a better option, I just quite like the aesthetic of that case but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, is watercooling the CPU in this build worth it?

Finally, any tips/modifications/suggestions to build a quiet rig, or just in general on my parts list?

    Thanks!

First pc build only turns on for a second

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:45 PM PDT

In need of dire help, I built my first pc yesterday and it only turns on for one second. My mobo displays an led and in the manual it says its my RAM. I've tried only using one stick in any slot and still nothing. I checked all the wires, reset CMOS, reassembled everything, and checked standoffs. The only thing I haven't done yet is barebones, I'm considering it because nothings working, the only times I got it to turn on was when I unplugged the CPU PSU, but nothing displayed. If you have any advice please comment.

SPECS: CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600, Graphics card Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super, Motherboard ASUS ROG Strix B450-F, RAM CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB), PSU CORSAIR CV Series CV650, Storage WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD, Case NZXT H510.

Best way to get WiFi on a desktop PC far from the router?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:49 AM PDT

So I bought a 20€ usb wifi adapter from TP-Link (model AC1300) and had been working perfectly for the first week. However, it has been giving me some issues for the last few days.

So this usb adapter is meant to support both 2.4ghz and 5ghz connections but after connecting it to the 5ghz connection it sometimes disconnects and doesn't let me connect again until I reset my router. I don't really wanna give up on the 5ghz connection as I get 80mb/s on the 5ghz one and only about 20mb/s on the 2.4ghz now.

Here comes the possible solutions i figured would help, should I get a better wifi adapter (pcie for example) or should I go for a wifi booster and then wire use a ethernet cable from the booster to the pc?

Notes: I have already updated all the drivers and getting a 50m ethernet cable isn't an option.

    Gigabyte RMA Response

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:45 AM PDT

Just thought I'd post this here in case anyone has the same question that i had.

Earlier i sent them an email asking about what the RMA arrangement should be for someone living outside the USA but buying a motherboard from Amazon. Here's their reply, hope it helps someone!

Kindly understand warranty terms are dependent on your sale of contract and are whatever your supplier sold you. End users have to claim the Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) service through dealers where the product was purchased and dealers should help arrange RMA procedure. For example, you purchased a card from Amazon USA while residency in Hong Kong. If you need any hardware warranty support, you need to consult with your retailer in the USA and prepare an USA mailing address to return after repair. Otherwise, you will have to arrange your own courier to pick up after repair. Both way shipping charge will be on your responsibility. Therefore, we always recommend customers to purchase product from local distributors / retailers.

    Regards, GIGABYTE

Seems like it's advisable for customers to buy from their local distributor rather than online from another country as it will need to be sent back to that country for RMA.

Is there’s such thing as a reverse flow RGB fan?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:53 PM PDT

The current case I've got (Cougar Panzer Evo RGB) came pre-installed with 3x120mm RGB fans on the front (externally) and has space to mount another 3x120mm fans internally at the front.

For aesthetic reasons, I want to put a push/pull at the front using RGB fans in that space to light up the case as there's not much other light. So looking for fan that the RGB faces inwards while pulling air from the front into the case.

    Is this a possibility?

Is it a bad idea to buy pieces for a build overtime from different sellers, rather than all at one ?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:49 AM PDT

I would just keep a close eye on good sales/prices if I bought over time but not sure if this is a good idea. Thoughts ?

Edit: I mean to write "once" in the title, not "one"

    1440p monitor vs 1080p ultrawide?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I'm going to get a rtx 2060 but i can't get a good 1440p monitor in my country. Should i buy a 29inch 1080p ultrawide monitor(I'm getting it at a good price) with 75hz refresh rate and 1ms response rate? I really like the extra space. Should i downgrade my gpu if i buy that? I'm going to be playing a lot of AAA games and fps games but i don't think i need 144hz refresh rate monitor tbh I'm fine with 60hz refresh rate

Need help, I know you guys are good with building PC's but I am getting a prebuilt and you guys probably have the most knowledge.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I am about to get a prebuilt PC and I have 2 choices. They both have the exact same ssd and ram. The only difference is the CPU and GPU. Option A is a 10700k with a 2070 (regular) $1349 Option B is a 3700x with a 2070 super. $1399 Keep in mind this is a prebuilt so I can't change the parts. Which would more worth to buy and more powerful?
