    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

I ordered an open box case, and I got a full pre-built system.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:33 PM PDT

The box was quiet big and heavy to my surprise. When I was unpacking it, I saw a foam bag inside, so I quickly looks at the back of it, and I saw the rear io, gpu and psu. My girlfriend was shocked how happy I was about getting a package lol. So I explained the situation.

It's not a high end system, but still an ok setup. It also came with an rgb keyboard and mouse. Ryzen 5 2600, gtx 1650, 8 GB mem. 500 GB SSD. 600w psu. The pre-built price is $800, the case I ordered was $55. I called Amazon to see if I'm gonna get charged for the system if I keep it. They told me not to worry, I won't get charged, and I can keep it. 8D

My gf's brother's b-day is coming up, so I installed my 1070 Ti Hybrid (I'm getting the 3080 soon for me), bought another 8 GB of the same ram, added a 750 GB HDD for games, upgraded the wifi card to a dual band, and I'll also give him a 27" monitor. (I only had to buy the ram, everything else I already had from my previous upgrades.) He's been playing on an old laptop, so this will be a nice surprise! http://imgur.com/a/qPtBsYt

10 years and 2 kids later this 30 year old dad finally built his first gaming PC! I have been delaying this PC becaude LIFE in general and I must say I am so happy that while I was building my rig I took my time and savoured the moment!

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 09:35 AM PDT

I am super excited about the build and i cant stop smiling to be honest! I spend roughly 1 year looking at all the possible builds and I am not even sure if the system I have is good enough to have all utlra high settings for games such as the coming Cyber Punk 2077. I am going to play Horizon Zero Dawn and because I have an AMD I get Assassins Creed Valhalla for free! Now on to games I play all the time DOTA 2 and CSGO! Had a laptop for the longest time where I had fans under it and fans on each side so it wont overheat while I was gaming, the fan noise for me were litterally electric fans, now I have the case fans and the AIO people complain about it being noisy but to me its too quite it scares me LOL! Just launching DOTA used to take a few mins and now playing DOOM eternal and DOTA 2 it launches too quick I am caught off gaurd when the game is actually on.

Cabling job is awful I know and trust me I redid the whole rig about 4 times just to make is semi decent. Watched a lot og Linus tech tips and Gamers Nexus, 1 week in everything the said were noise to my ears, after a few weeks I feel like I have a degree in PC components LOL! Also I don't know what to put inside the case to hide the gap where you can see th HDD and the wires.

TO ALL THE DADS OUT THERE! NEVER SAY NEVER! IF GAMING OR WHATEVER YOU DO ON YOUR PC IS YOUR PASSION! NEVER LET GO OF THAT PASSION AND MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW YOUR DREAM OF BUILDING A PC JUST FOR YOU!

Sister's PC works for 2 weeks, then starts boot looping out of nowhere. Spent 9 hours trying "every" troubleshooting path to no avail. About to RMA mobo but want a second look.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 06:54 AM PDT

Hey guys, here is the part list for my sister's build:

New parts (unboxed 2 weeks ago): AMD Ryzen 3 3100, MSI B450I GAMING PLUS AC, ASRock RX 570 4GB

Old parts (from my rig, parts as old as 4 years): Corsair CXM 450W PSU, 2x8GB Crucial DDR4-2133, WD Blue 500 GB SATA III M.2 SSD

Couple things about the rig that I had trouble with but surmounted 2 weeks ago:

    • Had to borrow a friend's cpu to flash the bios as the mobo didn't come ryzen 3000 ready
    • GPU driver install-triggered restart killed video signal on boot, using my monitor instead of my sister's to do the install fixed the no signal issue

Fast forward two weeks of normal, great usage out of the thing. Today, she called me into her room this afternoon to show me her PC was bootlooping for no apparent reason. You would log into the Windows desktop, wait 2 seconds, screen would go black then instant restart. Over the next couple of hours, it would progress into a reboot triggered by exiting bios or selecting an option like advanced startup in a recovery menu.

Things I tried over 9 hours with estimated attempts:

    • Reseat ram (5-10x), try each stick individually in each slot (2-3x)
    • Remove and reseat GPU (10x)
    • Check all power connections (infinity)
    • Clear CMOS (5x)
    • Reseat CPU/cooler (2-3x)
    • Tried the GPU from my rig (1x)
    • Tried the RAM from my rig (1x)
    • Tried the PSU from my rig (1x)
    • Reflashed bios to various recent versions, currently on latest (3x)
    • Attempted to boot from a USB flash drive to clean install Windows (2-3x)
    • Attempted to enter safe mode/startup settings/etc out of the recovery environment (1000x)
    • Swapped in the boot drive from my rig (1x, still bootlooped)

No matter what I did, the PC would inevitably boot loop. After a certain point, I got stuck in the blue recovery environment because any attempt to hit Continue, Reset, Startup Setting (safe mode prereq) would immediately trigger a restart and I'd land right back where I started in the top-level menu. I'm still stuck here. I could idle indefinitely in BIOS, but as soon as I exited it would reboot cycle a few times before entering the recovery mode, and when I was in that mode I could idle and it would auto crash and reenter the same menu indefinitely.

Over the course of it all, intervals ranged from 3-5 seconds before a restart to 1-2 minutes. I was even able to run a Bitdefender scan in the early stages (0 threats btw). I couldn't even make it through the windows install on the flash drive without a random reboot.

Things that tell me it isn't a corrupt windows install:

    • Boot loops when booting off external windows 10 installation flash drive
    • Boot loops when I swapped in my own boot drive, proceeded to swap it back into my own rig where it worked normally

Things that rule out certain hardware faults:

    • Isolated swap outs of RAM, GPU, PSU, and SSD not at all changing the established behavior

Kinda just leaves the cpu and the mobo. My question is though, why would one or both of these parts (which are both brand new btw) work for two whole weeks then die for no apparent reason? There is one thing though. In all the fuss to flash my mobo in the beginning, I might have gotten a little thermal paste on the sides of the cpu and a very small amount on the edge of the bottom of the pcb (which means maybe some got in the socket/on the pins). If this is what bricked it, why would it wait two weeks to manifest? I can't think of any other reason these parts would die so soon. Could an obstructed pin connection cause such boot loops? I have inspected the pins many times and I didn't see any bent ones.

Finally, I collected a list of all the BSOD codes I got over the whole troubleshooting session (only bluescreened like 5-7 times though):

    • IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    • SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
    • SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION
    • KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE

The first two happened early on, like within the first couple hours, immediately after logging into the Windows desktop. A reboot would immediately be triggered afterward. The latter two both happened while attempting to clean install Windows while booted off the external USB drive.

Anyway, in this post, I tried to keep a good balance of rigorous explanation and brevity, and I hope it isn't too long.

If you managed to read this and you have anything to offer in this trying time, I thank you a thousand times over. Currently writing this post at 7am after 8 consecutive and 10 cumulative hours of troubleshooting this seemingly impossible and unexplainable pattern of behavior.

If I am not graced with any more insight I will go ahead and RMA the motherboard but I would totally hate to resort to that, especially given the effort I've put in to make it work. Oh, the things we do for our siblings...

    Thanks guys/girls :)

Why are all (most?) cases right handed?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT

By right handed I'm referring to the window/ side fans all being on the left therefore the pc tends to be on the right side of the desk.

I moved house recently and the location of my pc is now on the left rather than the right due to furniture restrictions. I have no window in my case so this is not a problem. But it got me thinking the above question.

I assume left handed cases must exist? But right handed usually the way it is.

    Roast my build!

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I'm about to build my first PC. Based on the pcpartpicker build here, would you recommend any changes to my build? (based on a budget of ~$1,600)

    Particular questions that I have:

    • Do you think I will have issues running games on the 2k monitor with > 100 fps?
    • Would running graphics intensive games at 1080p or just lower settings on the 2k monitor pretty much guarantee decent performance with this build?
    • Other than keyboard and mouse (I have these already), is there anything else I should order to be ready to game?

I'm a PC noob, so feel free to ELI5!

EDIT: Based on the advice here I am going with this build:

PC build for $120 in Romania

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 06:31 AM PDT

So recently I've started looking into second hand PC building in Romania, and I was incredibly shocked of how good the prices were, so I embarked on a project and have already bought all the parts below (it will be a sleeper/esports PC, so I can use my gaming laptop less when I'm at home, as anyways most of my time is spent playing CS:GO):

A PC with an i3-4130, 6GB DDR3 RAM, an HD 6770, 500GB HDD and a whopping 850W PSU (this is the reason I bought the PC for alone) for $85 (with delivery).

A GTX 660 OEM (1.5GB VRAM) for $25 (will be picked up locally, wanted to go for an uber budget option, and this handedly beats a GTX 750Ti and was at half price).

    A stick of 4GB DDR3 RAM for $10.

Which places this build at $120 (without counting the HD6770 and the 2GB DDR3 RAM as spare parts I will remain with, and can resell for about $20-$25).

Best part about this build is upgradeability: the i7-4790k is still a very capable CPU and I can find it easily for about $100, and with that power supply, even if it's terribly inefficient I can still trust it with a 200W GPU, making something like a GTX 1660 Super or an RX 580 a very good pair (maybe even something better like an RTX 2060), and DDR3 RAM, even though it's pretty slow, I can still find 8GB sticks for pretty cheap, making a 16GB build very doable (and will most likely not bottleneck the CPU). So yeah, will update this when I get everything set up, and if you're from Romania, I wholeheartedly recommend going for the second-hand market (as long as you know what you're doing and you'll take the necessary precautions), as even markets in the UK (where I go to uni) aren't this damn good.

Best part about this, if the motherboard supports it, I can try to OC my GPU, which can make performance decent.

    TL;DR

    i3-4130, 8GB DDR3 RAM, GTX660 OEM, 850W PSU and 500GB HDD for 120$, included in the price being a spare HD6770 and a stick of 2GB DDR3.

Edit: Also just grabbed an SSD for $20, to make this a faster experience.

    RAM problem

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Hey. I build my first pc a few months ago. Everything was good until my pc shut down instantly. After a few mins of unplugging the psu it turned back on only to turn off again. After some research I found out that it was the RAM. The RAM keeps reaching 100% and shuts off. I somewhat have it under control but, its limiting my workflow.

If anyone has solutions to this problem please let me know. Thank You

How do I make myself go through the anxiety of purchasing my first ever build and attempt building it?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:34 PM PDT

    Hey peeps,

I'm a 32 year old man who has put aside purchasing anything for myself for the last 5 years whilst I moved to a different country, got married and raised some kids.

I've managed to finally earn some evening times for myself and have longed to het a new pc. Currently I play on my wife's 9 year old pc which can barely handle two programs running at times.

I've saved up enough money over the last two years to buy a whole new computer, monitor, headset, etc. The problem is I question the build every time I look at it. Should I find myself happy it wont last up to the check out because I panic thinking I'll suffer buyers regret for spending so much on a hobby, even if it's my only one really.

And should I purchase, I so anxious or the building process. I've looked and down research but it doesnt stop me being scared.

Anyone got some advice? I really do want this but the gear and guilt of spending so much at once eats at me.

    Difference between Ram

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:22 PM PDT

Wanting to know if I severely messed up or if I can live with my already bought ram. I've seen many posts now where they say ryzen cpu's benefit greatly from DDR4-3600 ram but I've also seen videos comparing ram and the extra fps they push out. I don't know if that's a general stance though, not necessarily pertaining to ryzen. If I'm losing out on 5-15 fps from what the videos show then that doesn't bother me, but if we're pushing that I'm gonna be sad. For reference I have a Ryzen 5 3600

Which of These RAM is better for AMD

I'm looking to build my first PC and I'm stuck on which RAM I should buy between these two that I linked below. They are both DDR4-3600 CL16 but I don't know which one will work better with my Ryzen 5 3600. I am also either pairing with a B450 TOMAHAWK MAX or a b550 A-PRO but I haven't decided yet.

    Budget Gaming Build

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 12:27 PM PDT

Hey everyone, this is my first time making a PC and was looking for some help on my build to see whether or not everything would be compatible or optimized. Its a budget gaming build that ranges from around $750-$850 and was hoping to keep it around that price range. Does anyone have experience using these parts and know if it is doable in terms of the size dimensions and necessary ports or should I look into other components and replace some of the ones i currently have saved? I'm not too well versed in computer assembly and any assistance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Please help me with a Threadripper 3970x & 4 x GPU 3D simulation and rendering workstation build

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 05:54 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I'm a professional visual effects artist, I freelance from home and am looking to upgrade my workstation. I haven't built a PC before but I'm excited to sink my teeth into this one.

The work I do requires as much CPU and GPU power as possible, for 3D simulation and rendering. The main 3D software I use is Houdini, and for rendering I use Redshift, which is a GPU renderer that only runs on Nvidia GPUs.

I use dual boot Arch Linux and Windows 10, and I work from home in the Gold Coast in Australia.

The Threadripper 3970x CPU would be ideal for my work, and I want to be able to have up to 4 x Nvidia RTX (3rd generation when they come out) GPUs, and 256GB of RAM.

So far my plan is to initially buy the case, power supply, motherboard, RAM, and CPU, and put in an RTX 2080ti GPU that I already have here to start with, then when the new generation of RTX cards come out, put 3 more of those GPUs in there too.

I would like the computer to be as quiet as possible, but not run too hot when rendering, and from my own research I think I've picked out the main components, which I have pasted below from pcpartspicker website, but I have some questions/concerns I hope you good people can help me with:

    • will a 1600 watt power supply be enough to handle the Threadripper 3970x AND 4 x Nvidia RTX 3080 all rendering at the same time?
    • will the Fractal Define R2 XL case be suitable for my setup? As far as I can tell it will fit the XL motherboard I have listed below as well as 4 x double slot GPUs, and it is supposed to be great for sound suppression, but am I asking for trouble in terms of temperature control with that case?
    • I'm not sure how to approach cooling, many people in my industry say to stay away from liquid cooling and that the Noctua fan cooler for the CPU is great, and that if I use blower style GPUs which blow air out the back of the case is ideal, but this temperature issue is something I don't have a good intuition about
    • Is the RAM I chose ideal for my setup? I have read online that when using 256GB of RAM with these Threadrippers the RAM speed gets throttled, this is another area I don't have any knowledge about so am seeking some guidance

Below is my pcpartspicker parts that I have initially picked out, any and all help from you all is much appreciated!

    Cheers

Need your advice for my gaming PC

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:19 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I will need to upgrade my CPU, MOBO, RAM, and maybe NVME if needed. I don't mind to buy a 32GB RAM, but I don't know about MOBO and NVME. This is where I need your advice.

I'm having a hard time to buy a CPU between Ryzen 7 3700X and Intel i5 9700k. I just need a new CPU for heavy video editing (Premiere Pro/After Effects) and gaming without getting lagging. For gaming, I play Apex Legends, and I plan to buy new games in the future, such as Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion, Rainbow Six Quarantine, & Black Ops: Cold War. You get the idea.

Which CPU is better for me?
