This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Hey guys so I'm a 14 year old who saved up money for over a year now to build my first gaming PC and I need help on this

I hope you guys respond as it's not only for gaming but I will be doing alot of distance learning and (VERY) light video editing, let me know what you guys think!

1 of 3 fans RGB will work.

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 05:37 AM PDT

So I've started my first build and decided to go with Corsair LL120 fans connected to a commander pro and the problem is that when I power my computer on, only 1 fan's RGB will work, whereas the others won't, the actual fans work though, just not the RGB. Another thing is I'm using the corsair Spec-06 case, and the front RGB on that won't work either. Is this a software issue or hardware?

Best accessory you've added to your Battlestation?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 11:50 AM PDT

I'm curious as to what the best little object you've added to your battlestation, whether purely aesthetic or extremely helpful.

Here is my pick: Digital Alarm Clock, with Wooden Electronic LED Time Display, 3 Alarm Settings, Humidity & Temperature Detect, Wood Made Electric Clock for Bedroom, Bedside, Black

Looks sleek and modern, plugs into my keyboard for power, and lets me know how much more miserably hot my bedroom is compared to the rest of my house. I also have about 19 houseplants in my room so the humidity reader is a plus.

    Post your recommendations below!

Everytime I do something new to my PC I stand back say that's it I'm done no more it's perfect. Then find myself a few days later looking for something new for it or in it already changing something. Anyone else do this or just me.

What is the stigma around NZXT cases?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 09:44 AM PDT

I hear a lot of people talking about how NZXT cases are bad and overpriced. Some of the cases are expensive (H510 Elite, H1) but is there a specific reason not to use them? Personally I think they are some of the best-looking cases you can buy, and I don't know of any issues with compatibility, so what's the issue with them?

    First PC Build

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 12:26 PM PDT

    Hey Guys,

I'm a 16 year old wanna be pc gamer who is currently stuck on console. I've saved up for a while now and have decided to stop saving and buy a pc. My budget is £800 - (I'm from the uk) but I can probably stretch 30 pounds. This is what I have in mind at the moment. But I'm relatively new to the pc world. And so any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

    My Dinosaur is Melting

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:10 PM PDT

My computer is ancient. I think I still have a part or two from my first PC build in 2008 (probably an HDD scavenged from old Dell Inspirons in my high school computer lab scrap pile) and hasn't had a major upgrade since 2014.

Currently my build is as follows:

    Case: Corsair Carbide Air 540

CPU: AMD FX 6100 (formerly overclocked, but now back down to stock)

    GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270

RAM: 16gb of assorted but functioning DDR3 RAM salvaged from various people over time

PSU: I dunno, some random 750w bronze series semi modular unit I got in 2014 on a trade

Storage: 9TB of random SSD, HDD and USB storage because everyone and their grandmother is upgrading to large SSD and mSATA and no one wants their old ones

Box Fan Bungee Strapped to the side of case in a last ditch effort to draw some heat out: Lasko 20" box fan

    AAAAAAND my problem

    CPU Cooler: Corsair H55 AIO

For the past 6 months or so I have been having serious temp spikes. Back in like March, I went out, picked up some Arctic Silver and cleaned and re-compounded my chip (it was drying, but I've definitely seen worse) and this kinda sorta but not really fixed things for awhile. Periodically I'd get some spikes where I'd idle around 70-80C, but rarely would it hit that 90C point where I have it set to turn off.

It's getting more frequent though. I'm checking my temps at startup and we're talking like 80C after boot and slowly rising for 5 minutes until it shuts off with nothing by my VPN running in the background. I have resorted to the age old "hit the radiator and pump while praying" technique, which surprisingly has worked to an extent.

After doing some research, it's starting to look like water permeation has made a difference in my ability to cool after owning my AIO for 6 years.

Let's be real, my computer is held together with the hopes, dreams and bright eyed optimism of the 17 year old kid who had to take shears to his computer case in 2008 to make his sweet new video card (I was it's third owner, but hey, at least it wasn't an integrated GPU) fit in the Frankenstein's monster of an Optiplex that gave him the freedom to explore the world's of TF2, WoW and Gmod.

So, I'm exploring new cooling options. But here's the most important part: I'm broke. Pandemic and subsequent unemployment have not been good to my bank account. After talking it over with the wifey, we've decided that saving my poor dinosaur from a miserable heat related death (and seeing as that's where the 6TB of movies live) that it would be a worthwhile investment to go out to the backyard and dig up the emergency credit card.

After browsing around online I think my best bet at this point is to go back to air cooling since it's cheaper, has a longer lifespan, and well, it's cheaper. Right now I'm definitely in the <$100 range and preferably in the <$50 range if possible. Here's what I've found:

    AIR COOLED

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition - $37.99 on Amazon

    Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B - $48.99 on Amazon

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo - $34.99 on Amazon with $10 Rebate

be Quiet! BK008 Pure Rock Slim - $35.50 on Amazon

    Noctua NH-U14S - $63.75 on Amazon

    Scythe Ninja 5 - $59.99 on Amazon

    Noctua NH-D15 - $89.95 on Amazon

    LIQUID COOLED

    BETAZOOER 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler - $68.99

    CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML240L RGB V2 - $79.99

ADDITIONAL NOTES: Size isn't really an issue. With the Air 540 I can fit pretty much any size block or put a dual fan radiator in it. Afterwards there will probably still be room for me to throw in another small mountain of HDD for when I inevitable run out of room. My case is white, my LEDs are white and blue. That was super great and cool in 2014, but means very little to me at this point. I could care less if it is made out of shag rug carpeting and duct tape as long as it works.

So, yeah. Any help would be massively appreciated. Between the Noctua fanboys arguing about how much they love the color brown and people listing random third party Chinese companies with products that look like they came from Wish I'm at a loss.

While I'm sure 99% of the world won't understand, I love this computer, flaws and all. It's been with me longer than anything else I use daily. I can point to a part and instantly get a memory of handing over a stack of 250GB drives for a couple of sticks of RAM or that sweet sweet feeling of getting to turn up my shadow and water settings for the first time in an MMO and actually playing a game as it was meant to be played. It would kill me if I dragged my feet on fixing this issue and became the cause of it's (probably well overdue) demise.

    Thanks folks.

Is it ok just to grab an ssd?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:05 PM PDT

I've finally decided on an ssd for my build, that being a 1 TB Western Digital Blue. However, I've heard some people say I should grab a hard drive along side it. I'm mainly going to use my pc for VR games, which don't take all too much space, and that's about it. Possibly some other steam games here and there. So should I still grab a HDD?

    Missing the right plug!!

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 11:28 AM PDT

Just wanted to rant on here, so I configured a custom PC on PC Specialist- I know that building your own is good but the price wasn't bad and finance on it was what I wanted. It arrived today, and I am over the moon!... But I can't actually turn the damn thing on.

This is because the PC shipped with a kettle lead that had a non British plug, meaning I can't currently plug it in! I'm ordering one online so that I can use it when I pick it up tomorrow, but it is SUPER annoying to have your PC there waiting, looking sexy af but without a suitable power cord for it.

    Ugh!

Advise requested for a new gaming PC (first build)

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 05:51 AM PDT

Currently i play the games using GeForce NOW, but they don't support all games (like GTA5), so it is time to build one on my own (for the first time). I've done some research to figure out what's best to choose, but there are a lot of options to choose from, so before i decide to buy all the parts (and as said by a friend of mine), i'm looking for some advice here.

My current budget is around 1.000 euro (I'm located in the EU > Netherlands), the list that i've created can be seen here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Dgykx6

I currently have 2 250GB SSD's (Samsung SSD 850 EVO) that can be added (so storage is not included in this list).

Thanks in advance for any feedback/help!

    First time PC Builder

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge but this is my very first attempt at building a PC. I put together a parts list and hopefully these all work together... From brief research i think they should... I am mainly looking to casually game.

    https://newegg.io/2cb467c

Also, is it realistic to think I can put together a PC for the very first time with no help other than online guides and videos? Or is it worth it to buy the parts and have someone put together for me?

    Thanks!

Looking to modify existing pc, know virtually nothing about computers

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I got a $500 cyberpower pc over a year ago since I was on a budget and didn't want to build anything myself, it's suited me fine for older games and indies but I pretty much can't play anything new coming out. I'm not looking for spectacular graphics or performance, just something more versatile and functional. I did a userbenchmark test which said the 2 biggest issues are missing SSD and an under performing graphics card (it's an AMD Radeon RX 560-B). Is the graphics card under performing because of the missing SSD or does that also desperately need an upgrade? What parts should I be looking into replacing and how can I tell if they're an improvement over what I have? I know these are dumb questions but I really am clueless over computer stuff. I can find the box for the computer and provide the model if it helps. UBM:https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/31650393

Very loud coil whine even after RMA and PSU change. Im stumped!!

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:43 AM PDT

I have GTX 1080 and even while idle I hear faint electrical coil whine. On games even at 60 fps I hear loud really loud buzzing. If it goes 100-200 fps it becomes so loud I can hear it from the next room.

Stranger still, when playing games if I stare up into the sky, it almost disappears, but if I look at anything with complex geometry, it accordingly gets more buzzing. Framerate does not matter.

    Now the crazy things:

    1. I Even RMA from nvidia a refurbished card, Same thing
    2. I Even swapped out my PSU to another corsair 600w. Same thing

What the heck is going on?? What else could it be?? any help please, as I don't play with Headphones because of hearing issues so I use speakers, and this coil whine is ruining my experience totally !

last time i built a PC was in 2004...

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Hi Everyone! I look forward to hearing your input on the "ideal" build for under $2000. I hear this is expensive nowadays for a PC. I'm open to saving even more money! I've been a Mac user since 2004 but miss gaming so much that I put windows on the mac. It's not feasible long term..!

I would like to use this for gaming and using adobe creative suite (photoshop/illustrator/indesign)... possibly also some video editing. I hear things are cheaper except for graphic cards? I understand the main cost is the graphic cards and probably the CPU? How else can I optimize this potential build? I picked the other parts kind of randomly. There's so much information out there that I'm a bit overwhelmed.

    Thank you!

Are there any issues with this build?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 10:08 AM PDT

    Hello,

I haven't used a Windows pc for about 13 years but seems I'm on my way back. How do you like them apples?!

I want a machine for VFX (3DModelling, Particle Simulations, Compositing, Game Dev) and pro video editing (oh and gaming).

Was originally going to fork out £3500 on an Aero Gigabyte laptop but my friend convinced me to build a pc instead because of thermal throttling.

Are there any issues I'm not seeing, or anything that doesn't make sense about this build?

This is with an eye to adding a second 2080ti, and more RAM and storage as and when I need it in the future.

    Thanks in advance!
