This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    1440p 144hz on a budget - which to choose?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:18 AM PDT

So I'm looking to complete my new PC build with a 1440p monitor.

To highlight, my main criteria includes 1440p, 144hz Refresh rate, minimal ghosting (1ms response).

I'm currently sitting on a very mediocre 75hz 1080p monitor which has... 'issues' let's say (It seems to think that white is grey).

I've been looking on youtube etc and found a couple of models that seem of interest and wondered if anyone could help me to understand whether its worth spending that bit more or holding on to to that sweet extra cash..

    1. Aoc Gaming Cq27g2u - This is my budget option at around £260. I've heard that there can be a significant amount of ghosting using this screen but wanted someone to help confirm if this is actually an issue or not. I know it's a VA panel as well which again has it's own limitations.
    2. ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD - Slightly more expensive IPS panel at around £330. Is the move to IPS worth the extra money? It's also very difficult to actually find this monitor anywhere.. Currys b2b seems to be the only viable method and that brings about its own risk assessment!
    3. LG Ultragear 27GL83A-B - This is the premium choice, but at over £400 its a huge investment.. is it worth it? Are there are any other choices in-between this and the ViewSonic which may be a good fit?

    Thanks

Are the Thermaltake Smart power supplies decent?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:06 AM PDT

Normally these wouldn't be my first choice, but they're some of the only affordable power supplies that are in stock. They're 80+ certified and have a 5 year warranty so they seem alright for the price. Anyone have experience with them? I've also been looking at the SeaSonic S12III.

Edit: ordered a fully modular Cooler Master MWE 650W Gold from Amazon since it was only $81.99

    First PC build (gaming/light streaming)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:09 AM PDT

Hi guys I'm looking for a PC build for around 2k i can extend the budget to a maximum of 2.5k (including tax) Im also Canadian so these prices would have to be based off CAD not USD.

Things I absolutely want: I'm an avid FPS player and I know many pros for any game will usually turn most settings to low for higher refresh rates which I would do as well, however I also very much enjoy playing single player games like RDR2 or GTA5 or Skyrim as an example. I would like to run these games at 1440p at high or ultra settings if possible. I want an RTX card for Ray-tracing I was looking at a 2070 or 2070 super but those are super expensive and not sure if they would fit my budget.

Things that I want but aren't at all necessary: -Watercooling for the CPU would be nice, (almost preferred as I'd like to do some light overclocking sometime down the line?) -RGB components if possible, im looking for a black case build with some rgb, definitely doesn't have to be overkill and would prefer to have better parts than RGB in general but it would be nice -I might do some light live streaming, stream quality isn't at all important as I'm starting out on PS4 rn and only average like 2-3 maybe 10 viewers at the absolute most ever. (If this isn't possible then in reality the PC is for myself mainly and I would prefer to get better performance and would like to stick to the 2k budget) -Ability to do very light editing, (I have a YouTube channel and would like to post game play recorded at 1080p just to make some little montages or clips, mainly for me or my friends to look at.)

Sorry if I didn't explain well, but basically just want a PC that can play single player games like gta rdr2 or skyrim with 60-60+ fps at 1440p and FPS games online with 100+ frames (again settings for online FPS play don't matter too much to me since most pros just set everything to low anyway for higher frames) ability to do light streaming/editing would be nice but in not at all important as this PC is for myself only. Rbg components would be nice but not necessary, watercooling would be nice bc I want to maybe do some OC down the line but also not necessary. I also still need to purchase a 1440p 1ms 144hz monitors at some point and a mouse for peripherals so I would like to stick to a 2k budget but can increase to 2500 absolute max.

Thank you anybody that responds for the help!

Should I wait for the gtx 3000 series?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 11:57 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU (ideally to a 2070 super, or 2080) and I've heard that the 3000 series is right around the corner. I'm not interested in buying a brand new 3000 series card as a 2070 or 2080 should serve my needs just fine. Will waiting for the new line reduce the price of the older cards significantly or should I just go ahead and try to find a 2000 series card now?

    Updating PC

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:50 AM PDT

Hey all: first time posting, from USA. I am looking to upgrade the parts of my PC with about $700 to spend. Main use is for gaming (COD: Warzone/MP, CSGO, etc) and I'm looking to switch to AMD CPU gang (my understanding is that if you switch CPU, you need to swap mobo and ram. Do I need to swap ram with what I have currently?) Here are my current specs:

-CPU: Intel Core i5-7500 3.4 GHz LGA 1151

    -Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-H110M-A LGA 1151

    -RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model CMK16GX4M2B3200C16

    -GPU: Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 1080

-Hard Drive: Seagate BarraCuda 1TB Internal Hard Drive HDD – 3.5 Inch SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM 64MB

    -PSU: Corsair 80-plus Bronze Cx750

-Case: Crap case and no cooling fans or anything

    Thanks for the help!!!!

    Desks are important, too!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:57 AM PDT

Planning a PC build, hopefully before January. I want to get a bigger/better desk, since the desk that I have is 34" x 14.25" (86.3cm x 36.1cm). I would like a desk that can accommodate 2 monitors, one being 24" (60.9cm) and the other 20" (50.8cm), and a laptop (13" or 33cm), along with the standard non-tenkeyless keyboard and mouse. Budget is 400 USD. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

    HDDs placements in case

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:19 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am building a new computer and, due to covid lockdown in my country, the only psu I was able to purchase is the Corsair Rm1000i. It's a great psu, way overkill for my system and overpriced, but still a very good quality one. NOW the issue is...this psu is 18 cm long!! I own this case (MSI MAG Forge 100M) and I am unable to fit the psu in with the hdds bays (removed in the picture).

    https://imgur.com/a/pHVbjXa

I don't have any idea of where to put the 2 x 3.5" hdds that I use in this case with this big psu. Should I accept the loss and buy a new case or is there another solution?

Some images of the case inside (from the net). Maybe this psu shroud can save the day (I see some holes in it for 120mm fans).

Theoretically, if you broke a component on a mobo, could you de-solder it and put a replacement piece on? Say, if you bent/broke pins on a USB 3 header?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 12:18 PM PDT

I don't know if you could repair it that simply though, seems like you could but who knows.

Finished My First PC Build! Some advices, some troubles

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:20 PM PDT

Hi! I finished my first PC build last week and it was scary and awesome at the same time and I though it could help someone if I share my experience here (here's my PC part list: (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CcC7tp)

I used some guides on Youtube (Bitwit's, Paul's Hardware's and another one specifically for my CPU fan) so the beginning was pretty easy (placing the CPU, the M.2 SSD and RAM sticks) but the most complex part (wouldn't say difficult) was placing the CPU Fan. It was really scary to do it (I used the Hyper 212 Black Edition) because you have to push it down kinda hard while you're screwing it into the MoBo but nothing will happen to the CPU so don't worry, just push it down hard and screw that thing on.

Cable management took me some time but I did choose a nice tower so it was really cool to choose where was the best place to put the cables (do yourself a favor and get some fans with long cables or some extensions). Another advice here: even if you're not gonna use it at the moment, place at least one extra SATA cable for later.

After this I realized I had made a big mistake (my guess is that everything was kinda easy until then so I got a little bit arrogant and I didn't check everything on the guides I had, don't do that): I had already almost everything mounted and connected (except for my GPU) and I realized I had forgotten to place the IO Shield. Lucky me, it was easy to place it by just lifting and moving the MoBo a little bit (my wife did the lifting honors: it would've been really hard to do it alone).

After that I placed my GPU, I connected it to the PSU and to my monitor and I powered on my PC but... nothing happened. I panicked (a lot) and I started to read a lot here to find out what could've happened. I chose to start the troubleshooting by powering on with just 1 stick of RAM and BOOM, everything worked. I went to the BIOS, updated it, I enabled XMP profile and then my PC was able to boot with both RAM sticks.

I installed windows, I let windows update do whatever it wants, downloaded and installed my GPU driver and everything worked just fine except for one thing: my PC had a lot of microstutters (on audio and video) everytime I powered it on (not just on games, on everything) and it was impossible to restart it or even shut it down while that was happening. The problem was always fixed after some minutes (sometimes it took a while and it was really annoying and sometimes just by opening a game it was solved) so it wasn't a huge problem but I was really worried that the issue was related to my RX 5700 XT card (we all know a lot of people have troubles with them). I tried a lot of things and today I tried by uninstalling the last update of my Realtek PCIe GbE Familly Controller and IT WORKED (guess there was some sort of conflict there) so I'm happy now and enjoying for the first time a lot of games with great graphics (before I was gaming on a laptop with a 940mx GPU).

My final advice: it's a great experience so if you have a good friend or a gf/bf that can not only help you but also enjoy with you that moment (even if it's just because you're happy and he/she's not really a fan of PCs) share this with him/her.

Sorry if something here is wrong written and sorry for the long post. I hope this can help somebody or at least encourage someone to go through this experience. Good luck and thanks to this awesome community for everything!

Left my PC running on Thursday for a couple hours until my lunch break then I realized I definitely didn't turn it off. Did the paperclip test, then looked at the Psu fan, it spins for a second, but only every once in awhile so definitely dead. New Psu will be here tommorow or Tuesday and I'm torn between swapping them myself or going to the local tech repair place in town on my lunch break to fix it. Need some advice or good tutorials on swapping a Psu

Building a PC or waiting for next gen consoles?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:21 PM PDT

Hi guys I hope I am posting this in the right sub.

I'm a college student and next semester most of my classes will be online (possibly the semester after that too) which brought me to think about upgrading my "setup". I already have a 13" MacBook Pro 2017 as well as an Xbox one with a TV.

I was first thinking of getting a monitor to get a bigger / dual screen with my macbook as well as a keyboard so I could have a better sitting position and be more confortable than just looking down on my laptop screen all day. All of my classes were online this semester and it was though watching and doing everything on my laptop with my head looking down for the whole day. I would also use the monitor to play on my xbox, this way I don't need a TV anymore and everything would fit on my desk.

As you guys know the next gen of consoles is right around the corner and I will probably upgrade to a PS5. However, since I would be buying a monitor and a keyboard anyway, I was wondering if I should build my own PC instead for gaming. Can you guys give me some advice ?

I looked for build on logicalincrements.com as recommended on the wiki but I'm not sure what kind of resolution / refresh rate I can obtain with each tier. What tier should I aim for if I want 1080p and 144Hz ? 1440p and 144Hz? What tier would give me a performance at least as good as next gen consoles ?
