    Make a wish build help

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 06:05 AM PDT

    EDIT: I SUBMITTED THE BUILD

I had my interview with my wish grantor yesterday and I need to submit my list of parts to the foundation.

Mostly all my concerns are with sizing and if everything will fit alright.

Also pls don't say "tHiS bUiLd Is oVeRkIlL" i know its overkill but i'm still way within my budget so shut.

If you have any recommendations for changes pls let me know.

Ive been tweaking this build for a while now and this is what i've come up with.

edit: I should have said this before but luckily my cancer is non terminal and I will be ending chemo in October. Thank you so much for the help and well wishes, this community is truly amazing.

edit no2:If any of you are doubting my credibility I definitely understand where you're coming from as I have provided no proof. If you go to my post history I did an AMA where I provided proof if that helps your conscience at all. I totally understand peoples doubts and it isn't wrong to question credibility at all. have a great day guys may your FPS be high and your temps low :)

Hi first time pc builder I finally pulled the trigger in a pc and I'm scared of breaking any parts is it truly as easy as it's said to be? Also what should I put in my ssd and then what's should I put in my hdd?

So I've been gaming as well as I could on prebuilts and hand-me-downs all my life, adding or upgrading parts as need and budget dictated. During the 6 weeks I was under quarantine, I stutteringly finished the Borderlands 3 campaign at less than 20 FPS and wished I had ordered my parts in April so I could be building and playing during isolation.

After I recovered, work got busy and the prices started to go up or out of stock (budget motherboards, GPUs, PSUs). But I finally realized that if I waited for the perfect prices, I might wait forever, and I needed to enjoy life and my interests while I can.

Good thing I built when I did. A few days after building, when I transferred the SSD and HDDs to the new build, my old system (Acer with an i5-3450 and a GTX 650) died of a motherboard failure.

The new build took about 4 hours for the core system including about 2 hours of cable management interspersed throughout. I did POST outside the case like many build guides suggest, and enabled DOCP in the BIOS. The V21 case made it very easy to build as I could just pick it up and flip it to any side, including the bottom. Because it did not have any cable grommets, I ran the smaller, thinner cables under the MOBO. The exposed basement required careful planning and judicious use of zip-ties to keep the cabling out of sight for the most part. I actually found this part quite satisfying, even with the ketchup & mustard. I added 5050 RGB LED strips to the case and front fan and plugged them into the 12vGRB header.

Even without ARGB, I find myself mesmerized by the color patterns. My next project will be to clear the shelf above my monitors for my new PC so I can stare contentedly at it to avoid doing work.

Borderlands now plays at 70-90 FPS on ultra. Control, which I got after, runs in the 90s with RTX & DLSS on.

Parents thought thermal paste was drugs

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:19 PM PDT

Thought I'd put this somewhere because I thought it was funny. I came home and my mother was holding my tube of leftover NT-H1 thermal paste and asked me why I had a syringe in my room. Nothing really happened but I didn't even think of that as a potential mix-up. Cracked me up :joy:

Ryzen 5 3600 vs Intel i5-9600k for gaming?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:44 AM PDT

So I'm still waiting for the gpu news and certain price drops over the next couple months to start building. I was pretty set on the 3600 up till earlier this week when I noticed the price has gone up from around $170 to $199 which brings it to the same price as the 9600k.

So now the question I have (as a noob) is which cpu is better for gaming performance. I know the Ryzen runs circles in productive uses with hyper threading but I will not use the PC for anything other than gaming.

I also like that I don't have to buy 3200 ram at a minimum for the intel so I can save some $$ there.

Pairing probably with: 2x8 DDR4 GTX 1660S or RTX2060S (depending on the announcement next week)

Edit: wow first award, thanks stranger!!

Edit 2: changed flair, thanks for all the comments, feel free to continue the discussion, I love learning about all this!

Some questions for you intelligent people ....

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:24 AM PDT

OK, so I am going to build a pc and going to use it for just gaming nothing competitive just for fun. and i have some doubts /questions.

    1. Do I need a 12 core cpu ,will games in future start to use all these cores?
    2. Is 16gb of ram still enough or 32gb is the way to go?
    3. Do I need a gen4 ssd or a gen3 one will do fine? also will upcoming games start to use those extra speed?
    4. Does a non wifi motherboard also don't have bluetooth??
    5. As a beginner should I even think about custom watercooling?

thanks, all the help is appreciated.

20 degrees down, or how I learned to stop being lazy and clean my CPU

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 09:44 PM PDT

A thread posted here a couple weeks ago in which the OP said they'd seen great results after cleaning their Ryzen 1600 was the impetus I needed to finally install the Scythe Kotetsu I've had lying around in my cupboard for over a year now. My build's a mini-ITX system with my trademark disgusting cable "management" and I hate rooting around in it for any reason, but with my own 1600 sitting at 50 degrees idle, I decided I couldn't put it off any longer.

A bunch of cable wrestling and isopropyl alcohol spillage later, and my CPU temps are down to 30 idle. I wish I'd taken some gameplay temps and framerates for a more substantive before/after comparison, but oh well. Moral of the story: if your CPU's a couple years old, take it out and give it some TLC. It'll love you back.

EDIT: Also be sure to check your BIOS settings after doing something like this, because mine had reset, including XMP. With XMP re-enabled, my temps are up to around 37, so not quite the gains I initially reported but still nice.

Please people, stop using the Samsung 970 EVO in your builds!

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:13 PM PDT

I see this all the time here, luckily often times people point it out but not always, just this week I've seen atleast 10 different builds using something like a 500gb Samsung ssd for the price of a 1tb from other brands or an overpriced 1tb from Samsung. The worst thing is, most people are building a pc under a budget of around £800-1000. At that price point you're just wasting money when you could buy a better cooler, maybe a better cpu or even a cheap Sata ssd just for games.

Really the main argument for their ssd is their reliability, which truly is amazing, but here's the thing, as it stands, most well known brands have great ssd's, and for just gaming, even those other NVME are overkill as of right now (may or may not change due to new consoles, but I won't speculate on that), the reliability thing simply isn't an issue for any consumer usage.

Like I said, I know people can be quick to point this out, but it doesn't always happen and it's just kinda funny to me when someone builds a pc below £1200 and gets something like a £300 1tb 970 pro.

What does it mean if my BIOS chip is marked out?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 10:19 AM PDT

I RMA my asrock b450m steel legend because my 3600 wasn't working with it. So I bought a gigabyte b550 and my 3600 worked again.

Asrock sent me the replacement unit. I bought 3200g for it and it did not work in the same way so I assume it was cpu incompatibility because of the bios again. I bought a new MSI 450m and my 3200g worked. I noticed that the bios chip on the RMA board is marked out like this. Anyone knows what this means?

What is the best GPU for the buck?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Hey everyone! So I've decided to upgrade my GPU now and was wondering what the best GPU/$ would be.

I am currently looking at all the 16X0, RX 5700 XT, 20X0 Super etc etc but I am lost in a jungle of people saying different stuff. Obviously if I would go to the AMD subreddit they would say RX 5700 XT and if I went to the NVIDIA subreddit they would say NVIDIA all the way. I thought maybe this place is a safe haven for what I would actually get from a card or not.

So I have been looking at Benchmarks here and there, watching Youtube videos etc. and doing some research but they all seem to be different from each video/benchmark.

    What I am looking for:

    • Something that can last me a few years playing at least 60FPS on 1080p on highest settings - that's it.

These are my current specs in my PC:

    GPU: GTX 1060 6GB EVGA
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x
    PSU: Corsair RM850x
    Case: Corsair 275r Airflow
    Ram: Corsair 16GB
Motherboard: MSI B450 AMD Gaming plus Max

I feel like spending $300 - $600 on the card.

And please don't tell me to wait for "the next thing" because if I always wait I will never get a new card. Haha.

    Thanks a lot guys!

[Build/Upgrade Complete] 2012 Build with a 2020 Upgrade (Nostalgia Inside)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 08:33 AM PDT

    Pics

In 2012 I Built 2 Sandy-Bridge E Workstations. One was for work with all new components, and a second upgrading my personal rig, that was fr 2004.

Built as a video editing workstation, the middle of the range GTX570 was a good price point for Adobe GPU acceleration at the time, but the real star was the massive performance and future proofing from the 3930K CPU and PCIx Gen3.

The Antec CLC died a few years ago, and I have been travelling for work, so it was finally time to upgrade the case, GPU, and cooling and get back to gaming once Covid hit.

    Original 2012 Specs:

    • Antec Sonata III Case
    • Corsair TXM650 Semi-Modular PSU
    • Asus P9X79 Pro Motherboard
    • I7-3930K CPU (This 6C/12T CPU is still working great at * 4.4GHZ OC, it has 40 lanes of PCIE Gen 3, was able to handle Quad SLI)
    • Antec Kuhler 620 (This was the beginnings of the CLC era)
    • EVGA GTX 570
    • 16GB Corsair Vengeance Quad Channel DDR3-1600
    • Intel 120GB SATA3 SSD (Not sure which one, 530 series?)
    • 2x 3TB WD Black Raid 1
    • Windows 7 Pro

    Upgrades include:

    Lian Li 205

    SSD upgrade to 256GB

    Zotac GTX-1650 Super

    EVGA CLC 280.

I can now play apex on all high 1080p settings around 90-110FPS.

Still using my Logitech MX510 Mouse and G11 Keyboard. I had to repair the USB cable on the mouse, but it still works like a champ! The Blue/White scheme was not intentional, but must have been subconscious since I purchased the peripherals at different times. Hoping this will keep me going strong at 1080p until I can afford to go 1440p/240hz in the future.

    Quick GPU wiring question.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:54 PM PDT

Hey, I have one VGA1 plug on my modular PSU. My graphics card has an 8 pin and a 6 pin. The cable that came with the PSU has a 6 pin connector and then an 8 pin connector next to it. It seems weird to plug the same cable into the 6 pin, which then branches off into the 8 pin. Is this right?

Is the 10 GB vram on RTX 3080 really that bad?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 03:44 AM PDT

It's still one of the top vram configurations for a consumer gpu, right?

Is it gonna be a bottleneck anywhere at all? Even 4k gaming should be fine, so I don't understand why it is a big deal.

What game uses more than 10GB ? It's not like having more vram would boost performance.

Anything wrong with this desktop build?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:57 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm looking to build my first desktop and gathered info over the past few weeks to make sure everything is alright, but I'd love you to tell me if there is any issue with the build I've come up with, just for peace of mind :) Here's the build:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2jhbq3

    Some quick notes:
    - this PC is meant mostly for gaming and programming. I'm learning game development with Unity but don't exclude diving into Unreal and messing with Blender at some point

    - I suspect 6 fans + AIO radiator to be an overkill, but I'm a paranoid and I'd rather spend a bit more to be on the safe side (some might have already guessed by the UPS in the build :) ). From the research I've done the MoBo should have enough fan headers to plug them all without using a fan hub; is there any reason I should still get the hub?

    - I'm planning to wait until at least the next week to purchase the RTX 2070 Super, since next gen Nvidia cards are expected to be revealed soon. Hoping for a price drop on the 2080 family

    - I'm still deciding whether to get a CableMod ProModMesh Cable Kit for cable management. On one side cable extensions would make the PC look tidier, but on the other one it's a bit pricey and I've read that some people had issues making all of the cables fit in the back of the case due to the extra cable length. Any advice?

    Thank you in advance!

Help on radiator orientation and placement.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I currently run a dual AIO water cooler setup with a thermal take P3 case. I have one AIO installed normally on my cpu, and one AIO installed on the NZXT Gpu Mount, on my graphics card.

Someone told me that my thermals would be much better if I changed the orientation of my radiators, and I'm not sure if that's correct. Would love some help! Edit: PC fully setup and running : https://imgur.com/gallery/CiADu7b

Too broke to actually build a pc but I love looking at builds/building videos & dreaming of my own build when I finally save up enough for one. Been wondering something about cases though after seeing so many

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:30 AM PDT

Regular cases feel a bit empty but compact cases seem to require sometimes smaller parts which are either more expensive, give less performance/money ratio, or have worse thermals.

I recently saw the Cerebrus cases and liked its internal layout (the power supply in the upper front corner of the case is really good use of space), but it seems like you have to get an SFX power supply if you want to use an air cooler (water cooling or AIOs seem like such a hassle even if they look cooler) . It also seems like a lot of other similar cases have the same compromise which sucks.

Are there compact cases with clearance for full length ATX (or micro ATX) mobos, 165mm air coolers, ATX power supply, 120mm fans, and max length of gpu?

(I'm sorry this isn't a typical build question, but I can't build one any time soon so all I can do is think about how/what I'd buy or build for a theoretical ideal PC.)

Edit: fixed typo, ATX not ITX

TX650M PSU and Sapphire Pulse Radeon 5700xt 8+6 pin connection

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 01:12 PM PDT

    Hi Folks,

I am trying to install Sapphire Pulse Radeon 5700xt in my system with a Corsair TX650M. The card asks for 8 + 6 pin power supply on PCIe. In the box, I have got two PCIe cables that hve 8 pin on one side and (2 + 6 pin) x 2 on the other side. Now I think one cable can be used for 8 pin PSU to 8 pin Graphics Card and second cable can be used for 8 pin to 6 pin. Is that correct?

It seems that there are 2 8-pin connectors. It's written 6+2 PCIe & 4+4 CPU. Can I plug those two cables into both of these and 1 should go to 8-pin and the other should go to 6-pin on the graphics card?

Can someone confirm what PCIe lanes are, and what they look like on the actual motherboard?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 11:03 AM PDT

I'm learning about PCIe lanes in prep to buy either an B550 or X570 motherboard. After Reading This article it explains a lot but also leaves me with some questions.

" At the PCIe slots, the top x16 slot usually will work with a full x16 PCIe lanes available at all times. But plug something else into another x16 PCIe slot wired to the CPU, and that number will usually decrease to x8 PCIe lanes "

So on the motherboard are there "slots" that will say "x16" "x8" so on and so fourth?

I've heard you always want your graphics card in x16..so if there are two x16 slots I should leave the 2nd one empty or risk my graphics card going to x8?

What decides how many lanes of which ever slot the motherboard has?

Even further down the article it keeps breaking down to things like "if you use these lanes then you'll lose x".. is that like a psychical thing that I'll see with the wires? or is it like "if you plug this is everything will have a speed drop"

finally, apparently PCIe lanes are connected to the CPU and the chipset.. how would I know the difference.. what do I plug into what?
