Welp after 8 years I fried my PC Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:54 AM PDT I have built and rebuilt this computer a dozen times. Today I was rebuilding it into a new case. Reversed the power and reset headers. Power didn't turn the PC on, hit the reset switch and instant smoke from the ram. Hope to god I can salvage my HDD and SSDs or else 10 years of musical ideas will be gone. FML. It's 4:00am. Goodnight. Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:59 PM PDT I built a new PC last summer so that I could both upgrade and give my little brother an awesome birthday present in the form of my previous rig (i5-6500 & 1060 6GB). I really wanted to bump from 1080p and shaky 144 fps to 1440p consistent 144 fps; while selecting parts I think I really focused too much on the times that I wanted to play triple A games and my PC struggled. I ended up splurging on a top of the line system with a 2080 Ti alongside a 9700k. I don't really regret the purchase because I had really low expenses at the time so I could afford it, but looking back at the last year of gaming on this machine is a bit painful when I consider what a high percentage of my time has been spent in World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, CS:GO, and gamecube emulators for Smash Bros. I definitely achieved my goal of having top of the line performance on the occasions I play a triple A game and in VR, but man did I overbuild relative to most of my time I spend on my PC. Do most of you running crazy "it's not much but it's mine" builds play demanding games a majority of the time or is mine a common experience? Those of you who are aware that you mostly play easy to run titles do you still feel a desire to upgrade your rig or are you happy with yours since it runs the games that are important to you well enough? SSD Drive that houses Windows 10 and other program installs, HDD that houses storage. Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:43 AM PDT Question for the masses here, I'd like your opinion on my plan... For building my current rig, with respect to the SSD/HDD makeup: My intention is to buy something like this Crucial 1TB NVMe SSD... this will be strictly for program installs. My intention is that this will house my Windows 10 installation, Office installation, and house the installation of other miscellaneous programs I decide to install (Examples: Adobe, Webex Teams, Zoom, Google Earth, Firefox, Chrome, anything else that requires an install): https://pcpartpicker.com/product/pxKcCJ/crucial-p1-1tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-ct1000p1ssd8 I would then like to buy another internal HDD (preferably 3TB-5TB for value), which will strictly be for storage of miscellaneous files, documents, etc. No installs on this HDD, just storage. Am I going about this organization correctly? Any opinions on the above? Thank you. [link] [comments]
New SSD is only bootable if going through windows boot manager Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:24 AM PDT Solved: Thanks to everyone who helped me solve this problem, it would easily have taken me days without you guys. Thank you! Update: After following some advice from the comments, everything works. As long as the HDD isn't connected. Disk partition looks fine, and again as long as the HDD isn't connected everything works. But if i dare connect the HDD everything breaks again. The original problem had to do with the SSD being MBR formatted, so rectifying that seemes to have helped. Update2: Nevermind? A couple restarts later, it now works just fine. Recently bought an SSD. I've kept the HDD installed to move files over, and eventually just use it as long term storage. Using windows' media creation tool I made a bootable usb, from which I installed windows on my SSD. So far so good, only issue is that I have to select from where I want to boot each time, and the boot manager seems to come from my HDD so it adds unneccesary boot time. I can change the boot order in my BIOS to favor the SSD over the boot manager, but restarting makes the computer complain about not having anything to boot from. Furthermore, when inspecting the boot order in the BIOS after a failed boot I get "Hard Drive: [][]" where my SSD used to be. Reorganizing the boot order and booting to the SSD from the boot manager fixes the problems, but then I'm back at square one. Any ideas? Does someone have any experience with similar issues? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:11 AM PDT Can anyone tell me if a B550 motherboard is worth it over a B450 tomahawk max? I plan on buying a Ryzen 4000 when it releases. Right now the tomahawk is roughly $115 and the majority of B550 boards I've seen are about $50-$100 more. From my understanding the main advantages of B550 is pcie4.0 support and better vrm? I personally don't care about pcie4.0 because all I do is play games. And better vrms would be nice but I'm not sure if I plan on overclocking the cpu or not. First gaming build for about $900. Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:30 PM PDT I've done a lot of research and this is the build I've come up with. I'm trying to make a PC that can play on high refresh rates, with medium settings on fps games, like Valorant, Counter Strike, Call of Duty, and Fortnite. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6pVDRk Please tell me If this is a good build. RTX 2070 Super build $1000 budget Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:28 PM PDT Build Help:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Some light 4k gaming. If unable to do 4k for that title hoping it can still support 60fps at high settings with 1440p. I prefer resolution over refresh rate as I don't own a 1440hz monitor and don't play many competitive FPS games. I don't play many triple A titles and those that I do are normally 1 year old as they're cheaper then. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) See above. At least 1440p 60fps at high or ultra. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? ~$1000 willing to go up to ~$1300 if I have to In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WjBTk6 I believe this list is pretty good. The manually entered CPU and Mobo prices are microcenter prices. If you think there's a better part / deal at microcenter I do have one available. I also haven't conisdered r/hardwareswap for any of these parts. If you believe a certain part would be better bought there let me know! I was trying to get this price down and this is the cheapest I could get a decent 2070 super build. I'm not stuck on mATX just figured it would be cheaper since I don't need more than 32gb of RAM or 2 graphic cards. Should I get a graphics card for this build now? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:02 PM PDT This is my current build, I haven't even assembled it yet because I'm waiting on some parts to arrive. Legend has it we should get a GPU release this year. I don't want to buy a 2080ti and then a new one comes out. I basically just want to run Apex to play with friends before I get the possible new release. Is this sufficient for basic simple games(not Apex case)? Or should I get a cheap gpu for now?

Need help migrating OS from HDD to SSD using Macrium Reflect Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:58 PM PDT I have been watching several tutorials, but I seem to have more partitions than every tutorial. I should have enough space on my SSD to clone all my files, but I have 5 partitions which add up to over 1 TB, however I am only using around 400 MB of it and the HDD itself is 1TB. These are the partitions showing in Macrium Reflect and I wonder which are the ones I need to clone. Don't wanna fuck it up. GeForce RTX 2070 Super for 1440p 144hz? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:46 PM PDT So I'm wondering if the 2070 super can handle 1440p at 144hz the games that I'm looking to play (like 90% of the time) are Destiny 2, LoL, Valorant, and OW [link] [comments]
Just bought a 3rd stick of RAM, but I have 4 slots Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:22 PM PDT Hey there. So, I just bought a third Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM (DDR4 8gb 3000mhz). I have an ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard that has 4 slots. How should I arrange the RAM? Before I bought a third stick, I was using dual channel, but now what do I do? Should I place two sticks in the A slots and one in the B, all right next to each other, or two in the A slot and one in the second B slot. Also, when I open the BIOS, my ram shows at 2133mhz, when I have D.O.C.P. enabled with the target mhz at 3000. Thanks 😊 [link] [comments]
How does one move their system from HDD to an SSD Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:29 AM PDT I accidentally stored my os on my HDD when building my pc a few weeks back, but I just shrugged it off and went with my system running through my HDD. First new build build in 7 years for gaming/work...need help picking a few parts please! Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:27 PM PDT Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Overall workstation (50-75% of the time) + gaming (25-50%) and potentially a bit of streaming. I'm a heavy multitasker and I don't upgrade my rig very often, so I want to get something that will last. I would prefer longevity on the processing side vs. gaming all things equal (hence the 3900x and 32gb RAM) I was originally planning to get a 3700x+2080 Super, but realized for approx. the same price I could get a 3900X+2070 Super. I think I'd appreciate a 3900x more in a few years than I would a 3080 Super. I'm planning on re-using my current PSU, an XFX 650W, at least until PSU prices cool down a bit. Also reusing an optical SATA DVD RW drive. For reference, I'm coming from an i4670K + GTX770 + 8GB RAM (originally had 4gb, but bought another 4gb last year after some performance issues. Had this rig for ~7 years or so. Would like to purchase the parts in the next 2-3 week. I can wait a few weeks on the monitor, if necessary. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) 1440p 144hz, High+ settings. ideally 144+, but 120+ fps would probs be fine? What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? ~$1,700* for the PC + $300-400 for a monitor. Would like to purchase the video card and/or monitor (or other parts if they have) from Staples, as I have a few hundred dollars in gift cards to use In what country are you purchasing your parts? US Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:49 AM PDT Hey y'all, I made a $800 Canadian PC, based around the i3 9100F (Since it was the cheapest don't yell at me for not taking AMD) and was wondering if my choices were wrong before I purchase it. https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/s2VBBZ It has an RX570 and I mainly want to know if downgrading to a 1650 is worth it. Is the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless worth it? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 04:58 AM PDT Hey everyone, I've recently been looking into getting a new headphone/headset to replace my Logitech g933 (currently experiencing a few problems after a few years). My friend recommended me the Arctis 7, which he has. While I was looking up headsets online, I seen that one occasionally, but was seeing a lot more about the Arctis Pro. From what I understand, the pro is a bit more on the expensive side, but comes with higher frequency range (not sure how significant this would be for gaming, but I can still see the benefits for music / production). As well as having an extra battery and supposed better mic. I was more or less set on forking the extra cash for the pro, but when looking at it on amazon, I couldn't help but notice that the first/top handful of reviews all are quite poor (1-2 stars). So I decided I'd play it safe, and come to you guys first for some advice. Does anyone here use/has used the Arctis Pro? Would you recommend it to me, or would you say I'd be better off looking at something cheaper (or even something better at that price range)? Thanks in advance^^ [link] [comments]
issues with my case and cpu cooler Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT so i had purchased the define rs vector and mistakenly didn't do enough research before hand. i began reading and watching videos that all proclaimed airflow issues and lack of airflow towards the gpu/psu area since my graphics card is my most expensive component (worth just under $1000) it's the one i care most about so i'd like to keep it as healthy as i can. that being said i tried to cancel my order but it was too late so i had to wait until it arrived and return it. what i didn't realize was that the cost of shipping would cost more than half of the price of the product itself. i've tried contacting the seller as this is bullshit as i've been trying to cancel the product since before they officially shipped the case AND i haven't even opened the package. i'm ultimately forced to make the decision to either waste $100 for literally nothing or to use a product that i'll potentially be extremely unhappy with (while i'm already unsatisfied with the company itself and it's service. what do you guys think the best choice is? am i overreacting about the case's airflow efficiency and should i just go ahead and use it—it's not like the case will break anything and there are definitely worse options (but there are PLENTY of better ones). or should i return the product for over $100 and get something else. if you think returning it is still the smarter decision then what would some alternatives be for me to use instead brief list of parts: rog strix b550 wifi ryzen 7 3700x EVGA 2080 Super ftw3 Ultra (reusing 2 year old) RM850x corsair psu and modular cables (idk if i should get a pack of premium ones to clean things up) corsair vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz samsung 970 EVO plus 500gb Seagate BarraCuda 2 TB HDD might reuse this 800 GB samsung SSD i currently am using and lastly a cpu cooler. i had an a500 but many people on reddit told me to immediately return it and get a better air cooler or to just get a nice AIO—which i might do. i returned and received the refund for this item and am looking for something to put in its place that i'll be happy with at a similar price point or at least not going too much over [link] [comments]

mATX CASE REVIEW: Q300l vs NR400 Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:19 PM PDT Hi All, When I finished my PC back in April, I had originally purchase the Cooler Master Q300L (aka cube). After about two months, I had decided I would search for a new case. After helping a friend build a system in the Cooler Master NR600, I decided on the NR400 (mATX version). Since I have both cases and some time on my hand, I thought I'd write this review/comparison for those in search of an affordable yet useful mATX case. specs for ref Looks and SizeAt a macro level, these cases are the same. mATX windowed case with a mesh/airflow front and top. Ample drive space. Sort of wide. Those things are all true! Here is some more apt descriptions: Q300L: Has the larger window of the two. The window is tinted plastic. If you don't have RGB, the tint feels pretty dark (actually one of the reasons I moved on from the cube). Doesn't have a PSU shroud. Removable magnetic dust filters with a cool geometric pattern on the front and top. Front and top of the case are metal pieces with MANY holes cut out. Has the larger space behind the motherboard plate of the two. Moveable I/O and multiple case configurations. Can basically fit any wacky fans you want. CM logo. Only 1 fan. NR400: Smaller tempered glass window, not tinted. PSU Shroud. Rubber grommets in the cable routing holes. I/O on top. Open front with mesh covering. ODD (America and Germany only AFAIK). Ample drive mounts. No branding (CM logo outline, no logo). Come with an extra 120mm CM fan in the front. Slightly taller than the cube. Comes with 3 fan splitter that runs to a molex. Personally, I find the NR400 a little more 'grown up' and refined. On the other hand, I love the stupid rotatable cube shape lol. Pretty subjective imo, except for the quality difference in the windows. Obviously, I ended up picking the NR400. BuildingFor the most part, building was pretty much the exact same. For references, I've built about 10 systems. The hardware they sent for mounting drives is worse in the NR400. Not sure if I just got weird stuff, but the screws did not thread in my drives. They use the same tech tho, the rubber grommets that you screw to the drive which then slot into the mobo tray. I had trouble with the IO shield on the NR400. It seemed pretty finicky. Mounting fans in the NR400 is a nightmare. Truly a soul crushing activity. There is just an awkwardly small amount of room to maneuver them when mounting in the front of the case. Very easy to lose the PWM cable inside the case. Mounting fans in the cube is a serene and peaceful activity. Other than that, pretty much the exact same. If you plan on adding lots of fans, Cube has a slight edge. Otherwise, very even. Cube has slightly more cable management room behind the mobo tray, but at the end when you're tucking cables away it feels like a lot. CM stock fan hardware was garbage in general imo. I felt like I was able to achieve better cable management with the NR400, but it took a little more work behind the tray. Felt a lot cleaner in the end though. PS in the ODD version of the NR400, you can only fit two 120mm fans. But you can also fit two 140mm fans! So, go for 140mm in my opinions. Sound and Thermals. In an very unscientific conclusion about an hour of using the NR400 and two months of using the cube: The NR400 is quieter with the same thermals. Do with that info what you want. A lot of more technical reviewers have found that the cube has not great thermals. I can anecdotally confirm that seems to be true. My intake fans definitely seem less whiny in the NR400, even just on chrome/etc. ConclusionThese cases are pretty similar all things considered. I think if you are building a mATX system and are looking for something a little more unique, the Q300L is a really neat choice and is a treat to build in. The NR400 is a little more serious and better for a more in depth build. Aesthetics will probably be the deciding factor for the casual builder/gamer. In the end for me it was about two factors: I decided I'd rather have the PSU shroud, and the tinted window just annoyed me since I had no RGB. I couldn't see inside the case at all lol. Thus, I chose the NR400! I hope this guide helps someone out there stuck between two rather neat mATX cases! [link] [comments]
Best colour scheme for my setup? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:05 PM PDT Ok, i dont know if this is the right place to post this but still. I have a white pc case and a white desk (kinda white themed) and im wondering if any of you have some cool colour scheme ideas? I have an rgb motherboard, rgb ram and 2 rgb light strips in my pc. An rgb keyboard and 4 nanoleaf panels so i can definitely do quite a bit. But what do you guys think are the best colour setups (im personally not a huge fan of red btw). 1 colour? Or a 2 or 3 colour scheme? I honestly have no idea but some suggestions would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
2nd ever PC build, first AMD - Thoughts? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:54 PM PDT Hey Everyone - Budget is $1700 USD and I'll most likely get most stuff from Amazon if it's in stock and not WAAAY more than other places. There were some NOTES at the bottom of the PC part picker saying the mobo can't utilize the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C on the case, which sucks so I'd totally be down for a different mobo or case (though I really like the case). It also mentions the PSU lacks a 4-pin ATX power connector that the mobo could utilize - so again I'd be up to change either. I realize this build isn't exactly breaking any molds but just wanna make sure I'm not wasting money and would love to hear how you would improve it or change it.
Here is the updated part list after suggestions

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:47 PM PDT I'll preface this post with saying that after a long time of lurking subs, this is my first reddit post ever so I apologize for any formatting discrepancies, etc. I've tried doing my fair share of research on this to see if anyone has had a similar issue but have been unsuccessful in finding the info needed to make a comfortable decision. To sum up my gaming background, it's mostly competitive. For as long as I've played PC games, and especially at a young age when I had the time, I grinded ladders, entered tourneys with teams, basically got my absolute sweat on when it came to winning. This got me to invest in a 24" 1080p 144hz Asus monitor a while back. Sometime later I purchased another monitor with the same specs but just a 27", and my 24" became my secondary screen. So here comes my conundrum... Life went on, I got farther into my career, upgraded my rig, still game lots when time allows, but have found a love for more casual / story based / AAA games (Deep Rock Galactic, Remnant: From the Ashes, Metro, Far Cry, Sekiro, etc) when I don't feel like making gaming a competition, and just want to chill with the homies. My current rig now I KNOW will easily support 1440p gaming (on a lot of games) and make those more casual games look so much better if I invested in a new 1440p monitor. But I've also thought about going the 1080p 240hz route to suite my competitive side. And for anyone asking, yes I feel/see a difference in 240hz! My bread and butter currently for competitive gaming is VALORANT. Right now at 1080p I can push up to 300 frames at points which makes me wonder.. if I decided to get a 1440p monitor, running the game at locked 144fps at 1440p wouldn't be the worst decision ever. I just don't hear about many competitive gamers doing this. And before people say just to buy the 1440p monitor and swap between the 1440p / 1080p depending on the game, my dual arm vesa mount doesn't really allow for that in my set-up as my primary monitor is front and center while my second monitor is off to the side at a 30 degree angle. I'm not necessarily looking for an exact monitor (recommendations are welcomed and appreciated), but more of a recommended route to take here, or to clear up any misconceptions I might have stated to try and better understand which way I should go. My current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8Vc4L2 TLDR: Competitive gamer wanting to potentially upgrade primary 27" 1080p 144hz monitor to a 240hz equivalent OR to a 27" 1440p 144hz monitor to better enjoy "casual" games, but at the loss of frames in competitive games. Need a recommendation! Edit: added a PC part picker link [link] [comments] |
