Why didn't STX (mobo) & MXM (gpu) form factors take off more now that small form factor builds are popular?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:30 PM PDT

    Example of both:

Tangent but on Aliexpress, there's even PCIe cards that connect MXM GPUs: example

So it makes me think if MXM was more popular, there would have been more options for using them on standard builds too; the versatility would exist.

What do you think about a new GPU form factor - 17cm x 17cm - same size as a mini-itx motherboard - which uses regular CPU coolers?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Having looked at a few videos on YouTube of people using CPU coolers on their GPU, I was thinking that perhaps this should become a more common they seem to work far better than current GPU coolers.

In order to make that easier, I think it would be better to use a new format for the GPU. The GPU PCB would be the same size as a mini-itx motherboard allowing one component to be stacked on top of the other. The GPU would be cooled by regular CPU coolers.

For example, a tower PC could be split into 3 sections, the CPU segment, the GPU segment and the Power segment. The CPU segment could be on the bottom, containing the motherboard, RAM, SDD, CPU, CPU cooler, etc. The GPU section in the middle containing the GPU and GPU cooler, etc. The power segment at the top containing the PSU.

Such a change to the GPU format would allow for a new range of cooler quieter and smaller gaming PCs. What are your thoughts on the idea?

Is there anything more recent similar in spirit/vein as the Pentium G3258 (unlocked Anniversary Haswell era)?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 03:27 AM PDT

Mostly asking out of curiosity. But is there anything newer & similar to it that's unlocked? What would be the closest in terms of "lowest in hierarchy" but unlocked?
