Computer only turns on when I use a blowdryer - Video linked

Every morning when I go to turn on my computer it's completely dead. It won't work at all until I point a blowdryer at it for a few seconds to heat it up and then it turns on and works perfectly without any issues.

    Quick question about AMD build

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 07:04 AM PDT

I have a pretty limited budget and have a question

Is AMD Ryzen 5 3600, Radeon RX 590 Fatboy and B450 motherboard with 3000Mhz CL16 RAM a decent start?

I've read about GTX 1660 but its a bit more expensive and I think Fatboy outperforms it slightly

My pc turns on but there's no display!?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 06:28 AM PDT

I am a first time builder and I just finished putting my pc together yesterday. When pressed the power button all the lights turned on and the fans started spinning, but the monitor didn't show anything, it didn't even show the BIOS.

I made sure the graphics card was in correctly, I even tried it in different slots.

    I installed the CPU correctly

I tried a HDMI cable and VGA, still nothing.

Yes, everything is plugged in correctly.

Can someone please help me, I am so sad and confused why it's not working, I've tried everything I know how to do, but mabey I missed something.

Built my son a new PC, Windows will not play nice with it

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT

    Hey all!

Recently decided to build a PC with my son (since he did well in school this last year). Having a hell of a time getting it running properly. As a disclaimer, I am not a Windows guy. I built my career around Linux, so I am fully willing to admit I am doing something wrong with regards to getting Windows to run.

The error that seems to be most frequently popping up is `IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL` (though other ones do show up occasionally). Once the machine blue screens, and this error shows up, it reboots into the BIOS and shows me that there is no RAM installed in the system. Now if I manually reboot it, the RAM shows back up. Okay, so I think, either an issue with the RAM or the MB. Run Memtest, shows no errors. Boot into a live Linux USB and run `stress`. I do this to stress both the CPU and the Memory. I do various memory and CPU tests using stress, including 2 tests running over 8 hours, using up over 90% of RAM and 60% of CPU, everything runs like a champ. Ordered from Amazon so eff it, got a new MB and RAM anyway. Replace everything, rinse, repeat, all the same crap happening.

At this point I'm having a hard time believing it's hardware related since I could run Linux just fine for hours, but Windows won't install (or if it does it blue screens constantly). But I would be willing to believe that the MB that we got just isn't great (or somehow incompatible with Windows 10). Before coming here my next idea was to upgrade him to a B450.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Below are the specs of the build:

    A cheap pc build

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 06:56 AM PDT

I am pretty poor. I am currently " playing " on an ultrabook which is pretty much just a school computer. I can't really play with my friends because half of the time I just go into a game with my friends and I completely lag out and cannot enjoy the game with my friends. I want to know if there is any way that I could build a good pc at the price range of about 300 dollars. I would also appreciate any tips for building a pc and what stuff I can afford for it.

All finished! + Rosewill 750w PSU giveaway

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:39 PM PDT

Following up from my previous post... Finished!

    https://imgur.com/gallery/wIU5Nx5

Honestly, at times a pretty nerve racking experience with some of the cables / screws but POST on first try! Did have one little "oopsie" of a bent USB 3.0 pin - need to look into that further. Also not sure about the 8-pin versus 6-pin connectors for the GPU but will figure that out soon as well. Cable management non-existent :)

I still want to give away this extra 750w Rosewill PSU that I bought (by accident - thought my Corsair PSU wasn't shipping - see previous post for picture / proof) so if you have a dying need and happen to see this post - please DM me.

    Specs:
    Case: Fractal Meshify C

    CPU: Ryzen 3700x

    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15

Mobo: ASUS TUF Gaming X570 w/ wifi

    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw 16gb DDR4-3600 CL16

    PSU: Corsair RMx 750w

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB Windforce OC

    Storage: WD SN750 1TB M.2-2280 SSD and Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" HDD

Added two more Fractal fans (X2 GP-12)

Monitor: Asus TUF Gaming VG27AQ 27"

    Mouse: Razer DeathAdder (wired)

Keyboard: Ducky One 2 RGB TKL (wired)

    Thanks again for everyone's help!

Any recommendations regarding a PC for games?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:31 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

At some point over the next few month I hope to either buy or build a PC for gaming. My price range maybe a max of £1500, but I would be willing to go beyond this for something really powerful.

I want something that can run the games I play which is mainly EU4, I like CIV 6 but I relay play it due the my laptop being unable to fully support it. The same for EU4 now, I can't play anymore because I can't deal with how bad my current laptop is.

I want something that can easily run EU4 smoothly and with max graphics. And if I had something able to do this I would defo play more PC games.

I don't really know all that much when it comes to the hardware etc. What I have now is a Mac and its horrendous, but when I bought it I didn't have any intention of playing games on it tbh.

Does anyone have any recommendations, tips, or good systems that would fulfill my purpose?

New high end gaming system - advice needed

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 05:57 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Last time I bought a PC was in 2013-2014. I still game on it but it's starting to show signs of aging. This is my current system:

    • i5 6600K
    • GTX970
    • 16gb RAM
    • 200gb SSD (forgot the specific model)
    • 1tb HDD

I've mainly played World of Warcraft and older games on this PC.

These are my main usage goals for the machine:

    • Gaming at 1080p and/or 1440p at 144hz. I am not currently planning to upgrade to a 165-240hz monitor. My 1440p-144hz-Gsync IPS monitor is a beautiful piece of tech so that's what I'm aiming for: 1440p 144fps gaming at native resolution.
    • I will mainly be playing World of Warcraft and FPS like Warzone. I want to have the possibility to push up my frames in Warzone to get the slightest advantage I can get over the competition.
    • One of my main gaming goals is to be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 on release, due September 17th.

I've been waiting for the next gen of Nvidia cards before pulling the trigger but from what I've read it looks unlikely that the 3080 will be out by September 17th in Belgium.

    I essentially have 2 options:

    1. Wait. Get a new system once the 3080 is out.
    2. Buy the best system I can currently get with a 2080S and upgrade to the next gen of cards later down the line.

Budget is not really an issue. I'd obviously want to pay as little as possible but I'm willing to go all the way up to € 3.000 for this system. I work long hours and gaming is the only hobby I have time for, so I want to get the most out of it.
I'm also lowkey hoping that this is the last PC I'm buying. If it lasts me another 5-6 years I'll be 40 years old and gaming will be done in the cloud (right??).

I've browsed some posts here and the general mantra of this sub is: wait if you can wait, buy if you need a new system for a specific task. The "smart" move is likely waiting, however I absolutely want to play Cyberpunk on release and I'd like to play Warzone at higher frames as well. Right now I can get about 70 fps on 1080p with everything on low, which is a bit crappy. Not terrible but it could be better.

What do you think? Your input is appreciated.

    Worth waiting for 3000 series?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:53 AM PDT

I want to build a new pc but heard the new cards are releasing Septembe/October time. Would it be worth waiting or would the 2080ti suffice? Games wouldn't really take up the extra power would they?

Question about 2nd monitor refresh rates/resolution

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:43 AM PDT

    I'm thinking about getting a 2nd monitor. My current is 27 inch 1440p 144hz.

I'm trying to not break the bank with the second monitor and was looking at 24 inch 1080p 144hz monitors.

Is it better to match refresh rates between monitors? As in two 144hz and have different resolutions 1080p/1440p?

Seems like a lot of people have issues with different refresh rates

    Coil Whine problem

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:27 PM PDT

Hello. I cleaned up my keyboard and when i plugged it into PS2 port (old keyboard) it didn't worked. So I fuc*ed up my keyboard ( I had to buy a new one anyway ). I try to plug in second time and this time I hear a "BEEEP" sound in my headphones. After 30 seconds I realize that I'm hearing a static noise through my headphones. ( I think it's called Coil Whine ). When I switch the volume from 0 to 1 and vice versa I can hear like a click nose. My question is what i broke besides the old keyboard, what was that "BEEEP" alert and how i solve this. I tried to switch to front panel 3.5 mm jacks and same result. I connected the headphones to my laptop and there is fine. So the problem is in my PC (MSI tomahawk z390 Mobo, Gigabyte 2070 rtx, seasonic focus plus PSU, i7 9700k) Please HELP ME, the sound is so annoying.

Building first PC as a birthday gift for a friend

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:26 PM PDT

Hey. So we want to build a pc for a friend. Budget =~1000€. He is a quasual gamer and wants to stream games like LoL, Valorant etc. on Twitch. I dont know if r 7 3600x is a overkill and a r 5 3600 would be enough to stream so we could upgrade motherboard and case. And second question. There is a warning on pcpartpicker due the mainboard and Cpu. Is a BIOS Update requiered or should i take another mainboard? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Suggestions/Changes are welcome. AMD/Nvidia build.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Hey Reddit, I was wondering if you could help me build a new PC. Some of these parts (such as the ram, ssd/hdd) I already have on hand so I decided to put those in there. My budget is sub 2k, but I would like to save some money so right now the build is at 1.3k minus the ssd/hdd and such. I would like to keep the AMD/Nvidia build for value but if you guys have any suggestions for upgrades/changes, all are appreciated. I plan to do some mid/light streaming on this, most comp games at 60fps~ with 144hz (cs,r6,valorant,ow), and some Minecraft (:D).

Friendly Reminder to Disable Windows Telemetry

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 12:08 PM PDT

If you're using windows 10 pro, you can disable all windows 10 telemetry by searching and running gpedit.msc as administrator, then going through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Double click Telemetry, choose "Disabled", then "Apply" it. This should in theory disable all of windows 10 telemetry tracking and spying. Unfortunately this doesn't work on other windows 10 versions.
