    VIDEO CARD COMPATIBILITY TIPS

When looking to purchase any video card, keep these compatibility points in mind:

    1. Motherboard compatibility - Every modern GPU fits into a PCIExpress 16x slot (circled in red here). PCIExpress is forward and backward compatible, meaning a PCIe1.0 graphics card from 15 years ago will still work in your PCIe4.0 PC today, and your RTX 2060 (PCIe 3.0) is compatible with your old PCIe2.0 motherboard. Generational changes increase total bandwidth (16x PCIe1.0 provides 4GBps throughput, 16x PCIe4.0 provides 32GBps throughput) however most modern GPUs aren't bandwidth constrained and won't see large improvements or losses moving between 16x PCIe3.0 and 16x PCIe4.0.[1][2]. If you have a single 16x PCIe3.0 or PCIe4.0 slot, your board is slot compatible with any available modern GPU.
    2. Size compatibility - To ensure your video card will fit in your case, it is good practice to compare the card's length, width (usually # of slots) and height with your case's compatibility notes. Maximum GPU length is often listed in your case manual or on your case's product page (NZXT H510 for example). Remember to take into account front mounted fans and radiators which often reduce length clearance by 25mm to over 80mm. GPU height clearance is not usually explicitly listed, but can usually be compared to CPU tower height clearance. In especially slim cases, some tall GPUs may interfere with the side panel window. GPU width (or number of slots) compatibility is easy to visually assess. mITX cases typically support a max of 2 slots, mATX typically 4 slots, ATX focused cases typically 7 slots or more. Be mindful that especially wide GPUs may interfere with your ability to install other add in cards like WiFi or storage controllers.
    3. Power compatibility - GPU TDP, while actually referring to thermals, often serves as a good estimation of maximum power draw in regular use cases at stock settings. GPUs may draw their TDP + 20% (or more!) under heavy load depending on overclock, boosting characteristics, partner model limitations, or CPU limitations. Total system power is primarily your CPU+GPU power consumption. Situations where both the CPU and GPU are under max load are rare in gaming and most consumer workloads but may arise in simulation or heavy render workloads. See GamersNexus' system power draw comparison for popular CPU+GPU combinations between production heavy workloads here and gaming here. It is always good practice to plan for maximum power draw workloads or power draw spikes. Follow your GPU manufacturer's recommendations, take into account PCPartPicker's estimated power draw and always ask for recommendations here or in the Buildapc Discord. When necessary, it is strongly recommended you use two SEPARATE 8-pin power connectors instead of a daisy-chain connector.

First build, pc won’t turn on. Is my power supply screwed?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:23 AM PDT

Finished my build last night, and to my dismay it won't turn on. I get nothing when it's plugged in and i hit the power button. Im not sure if my front panel is just wired improperly, or if it's my power supply. Absolutely nothing happens when i press the button.

    Link to parts

    For ease of reading:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-core

MOBO: Gigabye B550M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

    RAM: Team T-Force Vulcan Z 16GB DDR4

    SSD: Western Digital Blue 1tb

GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB

PSU: EVGA BR 700W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX power supply

I'm also worried that it could be the motherboard that shit the bed. I have no idea and i'm really frustrated as this is my first solo build and i spent a pretty penny on all of this.

    EDIT

    front panel connectors

    EDIT2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

Fixed my switch placement. However, now the issue has changed. Power button works, but fans start to spin only for a fraction of a second then stop.

    EDIT 3 BABY

Fixed the power button issue. Now there is no image showing up on my monitor lol. I have the hdmi plugged into the gpu, tried plugging it into the mobo as well. Neither worked.

    EDIT 4, EDIT NO MORE

Turns out my gpu wasnt plugged all the way in! Aka, im a dumbass. Windows is currently installing now. I think, after this, everything will be good.

A sincere, serious, and heartfelt thank you to everyone who commented and walked me through this. I felt kinda ridiculous asking so many questions, but i got it after all the help you gave me.

This pc was a birthday gift to myself, and i was seriously panicking that i fucked it up royally. But you all, with your infinite technological wisdom, saved me from that. May blessings and good tidings find you in this horrid year of 2020.

Convincing my parents to build a pc?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 05:12 AM PDT

Hey guys, so my parents are letting my buy a new pc (around 1100-1500$) and I really wanna build a PC, not only because it's cheaper etc. But I have a huge heart for computers, IT, and technology in general which my parents knows. Especially my dad who was a computer scientist during the 80s. I've not yet asked my parents, or my dad really if can build one because I'm too much of a chicken. Does anyone know how I can confront my them? Or just my dad really since he is the one offering to buy one for me? I already have a build idea for about 1300 with a monitor, keyboard, and a mouse etc.

    Thanks

Changing boot HDD to an SSD. Is it worth it?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 06:24 AM PDT

Currently, my SO is installed on a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda, Model: ST500DM002, and I was thinking of doing an upgrade to an SSD.

This one is on sale on my country: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/LRkj4D/western-digital-blue-500gb-25-solid-state-drive-wds500g2b0a

Would I be getting an overall boost in performance?

CPU not running at 100% and Stuttering in games

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 12:17 PM PDT

I built my first computer with a Ryzen 5 2600 and a GTX 1650 super a few months ago, and while it has been great for the most part, I have noticed a few problems with it. For one, when playing games, I have never noticed the CPU being utilized past 70% load, while the GPU is running at 80-100%, and I am getting some stuttering and frame drops ocasionally in games. At first, I thought that the CPU was throttling, so I installed 5 fans (3 intake 2 exhaust), and the GPU temps are fine, but the CPU is still never going to 100% usage, even on CPU demanding games like BeamNG.drive. If it makes a difference, I am using the stock cooler. Can anyone help with this?

Got AMD Thermal paste in the pins of my cpu, is it safe to run?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 07:31 AM PDT

I bought this cpu from my buddy who got thermal paste in the pins, and I'm not sure if it's safe to run. I think he may have had the processor in the socket using it like this for the past couple years, but I'm not sure. Just making sure it's safe to put in.

Edit: brushed off most of the dried paste that I could, then put it in and it seems to work fine. I will benchmark to make sure it does.

After living paycheck to paycheck and saving up for over a year, I am building my first pc. A few questions. Help needed.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 09:26 AM PDT

Here is a list of components that I have decided. Please advise if there are better alternatives.

Gigabyte b550 aorus pro ac wifi

    Ryzen 7 3800x

    Gskill trident neo 16gb 3600mhz

    500gb aorus m.2 nvme ssd gen4

    Cooler Master MWE gold 750watt

    RTX 3080 nvidia

    2tb Seagate barracuda

Couple of questions that I have. I can't decide what case to go for. For now it is between nzxt h510 elite and Asus tuf gaming GT501. Is there a better alternative?

Secondly, I am worried about the cpu cooling. I don't plan on overclocking it much so will the stock cooler do? If not, I would go for liquid aio due to aesthetics.

Also since I am planning on going for the founders edition RTX 3080, will any of these components bottleneck?

Thanks a lot for your time!

ps: I am in the store to buy. :)

Built my first PC and need help diagnosing a smell coming from it

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 12:48 PM PDT

I just built a PC recently and have a weird issue. I went from a prebuilt Alienware with a 1080 and i7-8700 to an i9-9000k and 2080 Super. My computer seems to smell. Like it smells like warm air almost. Maybe warm electronics? It's not burning or plastic or a chemical smell. It's not really noticeable if I sit there but I can notice it if I leave the room and come back. I sniffed around the power supply seems fine. It seems like it's coming from the top of the case if anything where the cpu radiator and fans are but everything seems plugged in fine.

I opened the case while it was running a game and tried to pinpoint a smell but I can't find anything. I main it smell it through the upper vents but as soon as I take the lid off those vents smell clean and I can't smell anything inside the case. But if I put the side back on shortly after I can smell it. Is it possible this could just be an airflow issue and the air is getting trapped in the case, picking up a smell and then being exhaled out the top? I have three fans in the front and only one in the back then two on top where I am smelling the smell from.

My dad is building a PC but says his monitor will have to wait until his birthday in December, what is the best monitor I can buy online around $300?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:31 AM PDT

The PC is really good and he's getting a rtx 3070, his PC will be even better than mine, since we live in a different country he's finally building PC so we can play together since I've been on PC for years now.

I thought about getting him a dual monitor setup but I think I should get him one really nice monitor this way he can buy himself another good one when he has the budget for it.

I don't mind spending more if you guys think its worth it.

    2 x 24" vs. 2 x 27"?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:50 AM PDT

If i'm building a dual monitor set up, is two 24 inch monitors better or two 27 inch. I mainly use my PC for gaming, and my PC can definitely handle 1440p 144hz.

So i was wondeing if i should go for two 27 inch 1440p 144Hz monitors, or scale down to 24.

    New 1440p/144Hz Gaming Build

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:54 AM PDT

It's time for me to upgrade my system. My current system is an i5-4690K with a GTX 970, built 5 years ago. The new 3000 series GPUs are really attractive at their MSRP. The goal is a solid 1440p/144Hz gaming rig. I won't really use it for much besides gaming and probably running Virtual TableTop systems in a browser. I've got a work machine for any productivity stuff.

As far as games, MMOs (WOW, SWTOR, GW2 are the likely vices), but also in the near term Cyberpunk 2077, AC: Valhalla, and Watch Dogs Legion. No competitive FPSes - I suck to bad at them :) I currently use a PS4 for those types of games, but I've decided to delay the upgrade to the PS5 for a while (the wife saw that game with the cat and the robots, so I will be getting a PS5 at some point :).

From what I've read, Refresh Rate >> Resolution, so I'm targeting 1440p/144Hz instead of 4K/60Hz. 4K/144Hz seems way too expensive for what you get.

Time frame is probably a running system some time in November. Having it ready for the launch of Cyberpunk would be nice, but not a hard requirement.

The parts list is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WjBysk

Comments on some of the choices:

Processor is dependent on what AMD announces next month. If the zen3 is big upgrade w/o a big price change, I'll swap to that. Similarly, if the Ryzen 7 drops in price, I'll swap to that. But if the 3600X isn't the best choice now, I'm willing to move up on it. With the current CPU, I'm assuming the default cooler will be fine if I am not overclocking. If the processor changes, I'll probably swap to a better aircooler (Noctua, Arctic, etc).

The board is based on the assumption that for my target system I won't really need to overclock. So getting a cheaper B550 with just OK VRMs seems like a reasonable choice. I don't want to spend too much so that down the road if I need to upgrade to zen 4 I'm not wasting a big board investment. If I needed better VRMs, I'd swap to the ASRock B550 Steel Legend

Obviously, the video card is a placeholder. I'm assuming a 3070 is going to be sufficient, but we'll see where the actual benchmarks come in. And brand will also depend on price/availability. And of course, there is the off chance that AMDs GPUs announced later this fall will give better value for the performance I want.

Case, I want something that gets good airflow, and is readily available at a reasonable price. My system sits on the floor next to my desk, so a glass side panel isn't something I really need/want. And I won't be spending extra for LEDs. I added two 140mm case fans to put in the front (moving one of the included 120mm to the top). I'm assuming that will be sufficient airflow, but will keep an eye on the 3070 benchmarks to see how much heat it will dump into the case.

Monitor depends on price. As I write this, the 27GL83a is only available on Amazon from 3rd party sellers and looks to be marked up ~$100 over its normal price. If the price doesn't drop, then the 27GL850 at roughly the same price would be the monitor (or the 27GN850 depending on availability).

Does the system as speced out match my needs? Any recommended alternatives? I'm not adverse to spending more money as long as I am getting real value for the upgrades (no sense in a X570+3950X if I don't get any noticeable improvement out of it).

(Sorry for the length, obviously I've been thinking alot about this build).

Games randomly crash to desktop with, seemingly, no error message

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 12:16 PM PDT

This post builds upon the previous post I made on this subject, so to save everyone the hassle, I'll just paste it here again so you know the context:

"Built a new gaming PC, games randomly crash to desktop with no error message (as if pressing ALT + F4) after 10-15-20 minutes of gameplay

First of all, the specs of my PC are:

    CPU: Intel i5-3570
    8GB of DDR4 RAM
    GPU: Radeon RX470 XFX with 8GB GDDR5

What could be the cause of this? At first I thought it was just a certain game, specifically The Outer Worlds, but then I experienced crashing in Forza Horizon 4, Cities: Skylines and No Man's Sky also. These are pretty much all the games I have installed right now. I know it's not the graphics driver, since I have the latest one and also have tried downgrading it— same issue. Also, I took a look at the temperature of my components and everything seems fine at around 45-55 (75 when in-game) degrees celsius. Also have taken a look at Task Manager and how much of my GPU is being used, and it's within reasonable standards especially since I have a lot of video memory. What else should I try?"

    Back to today:

When GTA V crashed a few minutes ago again for the ten thousandth time without any kind of error message, I decided to look into Event Viewer to see if I can find anything there. Low and behold, after almost 2 months of being completely in the dark on why these crashes occur, I finally have a clue (I hope), since this is what Event Viewer says:

Faulting application name: GTA5.exe, version: 1.0.2060.1, time stamp: 0x5f4d2237
Faulting module name: GTA5.exe, version: 1.0.2060.1, time stamp: 0x5f4d2237
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x0000000001306630
    Faulting process id: 0x928
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d68932fc9aa735
    Faulting application path: D:\Games\GTAV\GTA5.exe
    Faulting module path: D:\Games\GTAV\GTA5.exe
    Report Id: c4d2967d-c9e6-482a-a866-d694bfa2f0b0
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

Since I have no idea what any of this means, I just want some help deciphering it. What could it mean?

Just installed new Mobo/CPU. I did the free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 years ago, and now I can't reactivate. Support tells me to reinstall windows 7, then upgrade it to windows 10 with original product key. Really? Any experience with this?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:01 AM PDT

Sorry for the long title. I just recently upgraded my Mobo/CPU/Ram after 9 years, and then threw in my old SSDs. I had Windows 7 originally, and took the opportunity to do the free upgrade to 10 a few years ago. Now I can't get Windows 10 to activate.

After trying and failing for an hour, I gave up and called Tech Support. The person I talked to confirmed everything was correct with my account and product key, but windows still refused to activate. The tech support advised that I should reinstall windows 7 with my old product key and disc, then follow the free upgrade path from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and that I would need to delete my old(current) Windows 10. I'm honestly shocked that this is the solution, and almost refuse to believe it.

Entering my windows 7 product key doesn't work. I can enter it, but when I try to activate it, it says "Something prevented us from communicating with our activation servers. Wait a few minutes and try again. Error code 0x87e10bcf" - it has been like this for the 2-3 hours.

Running the troubleshoot doesn't work. all roads lead to it claiming to be unable to activate Windows., and that it "Can't find devices linked to your account that can be used to reactivating the device you're using right now."

I've been reading articles and watching youtube videos about how I just need to run the troubleshoot, or enter my product key. None of it is working, and I can't for the life of me understand why deleting and reinstalling is the necessary and correct thing to do.

How much will a 3080 card cost from manufacturers?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:22 AM PDT

I know it's $700 on the nvidia site but that's not the price from buying from a manufacturer. Also what should I look for from buying from a manufacturer and what is the top manufacturer overall. I know these things will sell out fast so if I get the opportunity I won't have time to research so I'm asking now.

Is the LG 27gn950-B worth it?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 09:08 AM PDT

Is this monitor worth dropping $800 on? I'm looking to upgrade to an RTX 3070 or 3080 and want to have the best visuals possible while having a high frame rate. Currently I'm rocking an RTX 2080 S with a Samsung U28E590. I'm locked to 60fps right now (I had the monitor before I built my current rig) so anything might be an improvement at this point. I'm not opposed to dropping 4k and strictly playing 1440p @ 144hz or higher. I was looking at the Odyssey G7 if I were to go this route.

My main concern is that with the new consoles supporting 4k @ 120fps, I'll be behind graphically even though I may have more frames at 1440p. I'm hoping someone can provide insight on what the right move would be. Whether or not that's buying this monitor when it's available (is it available? I couldn't find it anywhere...) or something else.

    Critique my planned build

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I'm completely new to this, so I wanted to see I could get some input. It will be used primarily for gaming (I'd like to do 4k if it's not overly pricey), school work, coding, and some CAD stuff. I heard the 3080 was coming out soon, so I'm planning on using that instead of the place holder. Trying to keep the build under $2200. PCPartPicker Part List

    Would a G.Skill Trident Z Neo work with an i9 9900K?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 02:03 PM PDT

Would they be compatible? To be more specific I'm planning to buy this RAM: https://www.gskill.com/product/165/326/1562840211/F4-3600C16D-32GTZNCTrident-Z-NeoDDR4-3600MHz-CL16-19-19-39-1.35V32GB-(2x16GB)
The motherboard is a Strix Z390-E, the RAM is not listed in the QVL. Also it's marketed towards Ryzen 3000 builds. Also would I be able to enable XMP?

My computer is overheating and I need advice.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:11 AM PDT

My computer is reaching high temperatures occasionally spiking up to the 94-97 degree range. It's fairly new and I'm told that AMD has high temperatures anyways but I know that this isn't normal.
This is a list of my parts:

I have the stock fans so do I replace them or get do something else. All advice is helpful, thank you.

What is a recommended CPU for the 3080?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 01:43 PM PDT

Hi, so im looking at buying a 3080 as i have owned my 1070 since release and its showing on modern games. The only concern i have is that my current CPU is an Intel I7-6700k which i have overclocked at 4.3ghz.

Would this CPU bottleneck with any of the 30 series cards, if so, what CPU would you recommend for a price around $300
