This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Unpopular opinion quit telling people to "wait for xxxx"

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 06:48 AM PDT

This happens every generation for new CPU/GPU. Someone wants to buy a new GPU whether it's AMD or Nvidia and they get told to wait. If the new generation of GPUs get released in let's say October that's still at least 4 months of waiting. We all know supply will be limited at first and scalpers will make it slightly difficult to get a card. I've seen Redditors tell someone wanting a 2060 to wait for the 3060. The "lower-end" Nvidia GPUs won't be out till 2021.

Prices won't drop when the new cards get announced. People keep saying "wait for xxxx prices will drop". Nvidia will most likely discontinue the older generation than drop the price. Retailers won't drop prices either.

After years of service, I'm retiring my gaming laptop this week as I finally build my own PC.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 09:54 PM PDT

This is a bit emotional for me and I'm not sure if it's allowed, but I feel like you guys here may understand this more than anyone.

A couple years ago I was laid off a very good job due to an injury and lost pretty much everything. My car got repossessed, I lost my apartment, and I was forced to go through bankruptcy to rid the burden of the debt that remained. It was the darkest time of my life so far.

But, after that all settled and when I had nothing I got this: my very first gaming PC. A prebuilt MSI GT72VR.

It may not seem like much to most folks, but to me it was everything. As a kid I wanted nothing more than to game on PC but it was financially impossible for my family and I. So to get this machine during my absolute low point of my life meant the entire world to me.

I played games, I edited videos, and I took it with me to the internship that ultimately led me to the career path I'm on now. It was, and still is, a great computer.

But, now that I'm better financially I have accumulated the parts I needed to build my own PC. It's an incredible feeling but part of me is sad that I'm retiring this machine.

There is also a bright side though. Sadly my family's financial situation hasn't changed and now my 12 year old brother is in the same boat as me. But, I'm not going to make him wait until he's an adult to play games on a PC. Once my new system is built I'm cleaning out this laptop, removing my stickers, and giving it to him along with a fresh mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse. I am beyond excited to see his face.

Thanks to this community for all of the information for your love of computers. I don't post here often, or even at all, but I see you all here and I think this a great community. Thank you for your time.

    EDIT:

Firstly, thank you for the kind responses. It really means a lot. This community along with channels like Linus Tech Tips and Gamers Nexus really pushed me to build a PC instead of getting a pre-built workstation. You guys are a cool community and I appreciate you.

Secondly, someone questioned why I bought a nearly $2000 laptop after I had pretty much lost everything I owned. That is a legitimate question and I'd like to answer it in the main post as well.

As I said above I was at a pretty low point. While I was VERY fortunate enough to have in-laws that would allow my spouse and I to live with them until we got back on our feet, we didn't take anything with us aside from our clothes and bed. I virtually had nothing I could say I owned myself and that bothered me tremendously.

Before the bankruptcy I had foolishly paid credit for a computer I used to do video editing work. When I filed for bankruptcy, it was effectively taken back and given to my creditor to make some of their money back. As for gaming, I had to sell my PS4 and TV to try and keep up payments on the car I was financing at the time...which in hindsight sucks because I lost the car anyways.

Video editing has always been as much a passion as video gaming for me. Not having access to either of those things really upset me. So once I got a new job slinging pizzas at Round Table, I looked for ways I could get my hands on something I could use for both: a gaming computer.

Unfortunately I didn't have a desk so I had to go with a laptop. Also unfortunately, the bankruptcy absolutely destroyed my credit. I dropped from a 700 to a 320 credit score. I didn't have many options.

So, I found Xotic PC and at the time they allowed leasing with no credit requirements. Better yet, they offered low monthly payments I could afford even with my pizza job. This is how they lure you in.

Being dumb and desperate at the time, I agreed to pay to lease, and then own, my laptop. Seemed like a good deal at the time...but I ended up paying nearly double the MSRP to actually own it. Very shitty. But, bright side: I do own the laptop now which means I can give it to my brother.

TL;DR - I made a very dumb choice to lease an expensive computer and although I could manage to keep up the monthly payments it was a poor financial choice in the long run.

Sorry if that explanation isn't the best, but it's really what happened and I can't offer anything better than the truth. Now that I'm older and have been through more I offer you this advice: be careful when you lease things because it can bite you in the ass.

I build a PC into a drawer for my carpenter exam project. Danish Design meets PC Master Race.

This was my exam project for basic carpentry i Denmark. A lot of hard work and painstaking details went into this build to make it all workout. Everything you see is hand made ( no CNC used) , and all designed by myself. Wood type is Oak.

The idea was to combine Classic Danish Design with the world of PC Master Race.

The hole drawer can slide out while the pc is running, and it has two bottoms so you can hide the cables in between.
Intake fans, PSU and GPU is mounted with magnets.
It's an EKWB 120 mm quad radiator in 38 mm thickness in the back. ;)

My first build is up and running! First build and first PC, having always been a MacBook user

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 10:14 AM PDT

I had a ton of fun putting my first build together. I was nervous about something going terribly wrong after reading so many stories here haha. But I put it all together and it just worked! I was so stoked. I'm excited to get more into gaming, especially games that my MacBook couldn't handle.

    PCPartPicker List

I know it's not a perfect build, but I've been having a lot of fun with it.

    A couple pictures

Edit: thank you for the gold!! That's my first one! This got a lot more attention than I thought it would, you are all wonderful!

Edit 2: I'll add the one funny thing that happened during the build that I just remembered, for anyone that still sees this. When I had it all setup and went to turn it on, I started mashing delete to get to the BIOS, but I only ended up getting text on the screen with some of the hardware information. I was happy to see it was recognizing the right stuff, but was confused why the BIOS didn't come up. I then realized I hadn't plugged the keyboard into the PC.. lol so I plugged it in, restarted, mashed delete again, and then everything was fine haha.

After getting rid of my crappy prebuilt and a month of planning and waiting for parts, I've finally build my first PC.

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:53 AM PDT

Honestly really blessed that I didn't have to troubleshoot and my PC worked first try. The worst part of it was the wait for all the parts due to covid and the god awful delivery times but it was so worth it after putting together this beaut.

I think the all white build paid off. Here's some pics

    Hello All,

After watching tons of Bitwit and LTT videos I finally decided it was time to try and scrap together a build i could afford and try building my first pc. I will be attaching a PC parts picker list but keep in mind I DID NOT spend anywhere near that amount of money. Almost everything was second hand. Let me know what you think!

    Which RX 5700XT?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 01:41 PM PDT

I've been researching and decided that I want a Rx 5700 XT. I have my eyes on a ROG Strix version available for cheap on Amazon, especially for a ROG card. I know they had trouble with loose screws in their cooler mounting in the past but is that resolved now?

    1st budget pc build (SGD$1000, ~US$720)

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:25 AM PDT

Been using a reliable but stupidly underpowered by today's standards ASUS ROG G75VX laptop with an i7-3630qm and GTX 670MX (Radeon HD 7770 equivalent) and struggled to play jedi fallen order at 1600x900 at 20+ FPS so I pretty desperately need a pc that can do games at 1080p 60fps.

The Crucial MX500 SSD listed below is currently in my laptop which I plan to take out and format (I don't plan to use that laptop anymore it's in a bad physical state now) and repurpose in this build saving some cash. It's a bit unconventional but this should be ok right with a fresh install of win10?

Upgrade Help - DDR4 speeds and CAS latency

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 01:31 PM PDT

I'm planning an upgrade soon from my 2013 build, and I am quite lost when it comes to DDR4 speeds and timings.

90% use case for my desktop is gaming. I run Linux and I play FFXIV using Lutris/DXVK very casually, Stellaris with a ton of mods, and recently BL3 via Steam Proton. Anything else I play would run on a toaster probably. I'm a software engineer but most of my projects that I do on this personal PC are embedded systems/ really lightweight so my current build doesn't even yawn at them. I run some VMs too but nothing crazy, and not while gaming.

    Current build: i7-3770k, 16GB DDR3 @1600MHz, 980ti, 1440p/144Hz monitor

GPU update would be at a later date. I want to wait till the fall and see if I can pick up a last gen at a better price.

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $164.99 @ Newegg
Motherboard MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard $114.99 @ Best Buy
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL14 Memory $99.99 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $379.97
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-06-10 16:06 EDT-0400

    What I think I know:

    • B450 mobo should be compatible with 3200MHz speeds, while 3600MHz would require an upgrade to an X570.
    • CAS latency can directly affect frame rates in instances where the CPU is waiting on RAM, but I'm not sure I will physically be able to tell between 14 and 16
    • I believe that FPS improvements will be fairly minimal from 3200 to 3600Mhz based on benchmark results I've looked up

    Questions:

    1. For my use case, will I actually see performance while gaming before a GPU upgrade?
    2. Are my assumptions correct about RAM speeds and CAS latency?
    3. Am I wasting cash on this 3200MHz CL14 set of RAM? It's $30 less for CL16 @3200

Is a 1TB SSD enough for gaming?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 01:18 PM PDT

Not sure what storage option to go with.

I'm wondering how many games a 1TB SSD would store, and what the best storage option would be.

There's a soft humming/buzzing coming from my PSU. Is this normal?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:31 AM PDT

It doesn't really sound like coil whine. It's just a constant humming sound. It's barely noticeable with the PC on my desk, but you can hear it more audibly with your ear directly next to the unit.

I'm not sure if it's electrical or if it's coming from the fan. I have the EVGA 850W GQ.

    Should I be concerned?

So im new to PC building and i have been using PC part picker for a while but the only problems i run into is, what processor would be best between Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel i59600k, what Gpu would be best to not have a "bottleneck" problem, and what case is best to use for thermals. first time building a PC in forever, just wanted thoughts and such before i pulled the trigger. one thing to note is that im getting the Graphics card used from amazon and wanted some thoughts on that as well. do you guys thing the used card is a bad option? it was way less than the new price on amazon and the last used in stock (400 less for that matter, 849 new, 420 ish used) so i figured id pull the trigger and since its amazon, i could return it if i noticed any issues with it. according to amazon all that was wrong was some missing papers and the CD that came with it but just want thoughts on the purchase. is buying a used card a horrible idea? as for storage, i have a SSD that i plan on using for the new build, so although its not in the PCPP, its there.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03UAfOBzbU4&t=580s

its based on this build, originally was gonna be the same but when i saw the used super amp extreme for about the price of the super mini 2060, i switched to that, and the case change was as a result of the graphics card being longer than what fits in the original corsair crystal 280x case. PCPP sees no issue with it, but looking at the pictures of the case, i dont see where the water cooler would fit, just wanted to run that by here and make sure.

Need help bringing down price / Finding a suitable power supply for use

    Hey guys,

I'm going for a white theme for my build but the white alternatives are so expensive :c I've recently received the Cooler Master TD500 Mesh White as a gift as I would love to build using it. I'm very new to the scene and I have no idea what the 80+ grades and all mean for the power supply and I'm unsure what fans would be suitable (but I would like to buy 4 fans to fill up the space in the case.

    Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: Sorry I'm not too sure how to copy and paste it so that the table will show up
