    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    I haven't built a PC in 14 years

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 05:12 PM PDT

In high school (1999-2003) I was an avid PC enthusiast. I owned every generation of nVidia card starting with the Riva TNT (their first 3D card). I was overclocking my AMD Duron chips as hard as they would go. Back then you had to jump the pins by drawing a line between them with a pencil. Had a 4x30gb RAID 0 array that put through a WHOPPING 120mb/s. Played a lot of CS and Brood Wars.

In college I became less focused on hardware and more on writing software. The only thing I used my GTX 260 for was simulating neural networks. When I finally graduated I switched to being a console gamer only, and used my aging PC just for watching YouTube while I used MacBooks for work. I can't believe all this time I've still been using that Q6600/8GB machine for 14 years. It's still running strong.

But with all this new time at home I was suddenly struck by the urge to finally build a machine. Many things have changed and I'm completely blown away. The biggest change is all solid state storage. It's mind boggling having the slowest part of a machine (disk IO) run at GIGABYTES per second instead of 50mb/s. And it's so quiet! I hooked up my old 4tb platter disk to it to transfer media over and it was like strapping a lead anchor to The Flash's leg.

Also back in my day watercooling was this insanely involved nightmare that would probably end up causing water damage to your apartment and ruin your PC. I had literally never heard of 'All In One' watercoolers. My least favourite part of ever building a machine was attaching the cooler to the CPU. I've ruined a few coolers, and even a few chips (I forgot to take the tape off the thermal tape on the bottom XD). But this was so easy to install, and so compact!

And the whole time I was choosing parts, everything has glowing colourful lights in them now. And the whole time I was like 'this is ridiculous, give me a break.' But something terrible grew inside me until I broke down and ordered a strip of lights. And... I kind of love it.

It also confused the hell out of me that all these benchmarks show games running in the hundreds of FPS, what's the point when displays only show 60hz? Oh. Modern displays show 144/240hz! Wild.

Now I have 10 years of gaming to catch up on. Really enjoying Doom Eternal and Titanfall 2.

    Just a shoutout to EVGA.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 02:37 PM PDT

So I've had an EVGA G2 750W Gold+ power supply for 5 years now. It has served me extremely well and had no issues whatsoever, until suddenly about 3 weeks ago I began to hear a squeak coming from my tower. It sounded like a fan bearing, so I put an ear to the comp and discovered it was coming from the PSU fan.

I Contacted EVGA and told them since I'm currently work-from-home I couldn't just send my PSU to them for 3 weeks while they fixed it, so they offered to send me a new unit (charge me a collateral fee), and when I receive it, I send them my old one. Once they get my old one, they'll refund my collateral. Fair enough, so I do so, and when I get the new one, it's now a G3. Slimmer, sexier, upgraded.

Such a great customer service experience. Thank you, EVGA. This is why I buy your GPUs too. <3

    First PC build complete!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:49 AM PDT

    Hi all,

First of all, a massive thank you to this sub for everything I've learned over here. Spent a few months lurking, agonising over whether to do it or not, but since the lockdown i was spending more time than ever at home and so finally decided to bite the bullet.

The last time I owned a desktop was probably around 10 years ago, and it was a fairly basic pre-built one, sporting a Radeon HD 4550 and an AMD Athlon II. How time flew by.

Now i am the proud owner of this sleek devil.

Here is the list of parts used:

For my monitor, I'm just using the one I got from work (4K LG UK850) and so far it has behaved quite admirably, but I haven't played anything more demanding than GTA V for now. We'll see how it goes in the future.

Building it was quite fun, and pretty straightforward. Got everything done in under 3 hours and encountered none of the horror stories you sometimes encounter in some of the posts here (Thank God!!).

Prices were quite a bit better a couple of weeks ago, but with £350 worth of Amazon vouchers along with an open box GPU, I managed to get all this for around £900, which is a cracking deal as far as I am concerned!

Well, time to go catch up on all those games I missed out on.

My pc shocks me whenever I connect something to it.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:04 AM PDT

Basically, when I connect my headset to the computer, it's all fine and nothing shocks me, if I touch the case, nothing shocks me

But for example, if I put an AUX in it and touch the other side of it, I get shocked, if there is a tiny bit of exposed wire on the headset, I get shocked, if I don't touch the plastic part of a USB cable, I get shocked

What really made me post this, is that I connected my guitar amp to the computer through an AUX (To record from the amp for music production purposes), and connected the guitar to my amp

AND THE GUITAR STRINGS SHOCK ME WHENEVER I TOUCH THEM.

    THE STRINGS.

    SHOCK ME.

    Is FPS Monitor safe?

I just built my first real gaming PC and I'm downloading all kinds of games to test the temps. Is this program safe to use? By safe, I'm mean that it won't do any kinds of weird stuff in the background, or screw with the performance.

1st Time Build: An Imperfect $1000 PC

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:53 PM PDT

    Here's the album.

I'd like to share some background story here. I was never into computer stuff and had little interest in gaming (last game that I played was Uncharted 3 in PS3 in 2011/12). Show me in 2019 a RAM stick and M.2 NVMe SSD, I probably couldn't answer you what those things are. That changed in late April 2020 when my 8-year old Asus laptop finally gave up on me. I had no choice but to start researching for a new laptop, and at the same time reading about PC components to help me get to speed. But somehow, the more I read, the more I got attracted to it. It opened a whole new universe to me, and soon I found myself spending the next several weeks reading through blogs, forums and watching countless of Youtube videos. I finally decided that I wanted a PC instead, and I should build it by myself. It was a tall order for a complete starter like me, but the more I read those forums and watched those build videos, the more I had the urge to get my hands on it.

So the quest began. I wanted to have a more-than-capable PC that can handle all kinds of games at 1080p with a budget of not more than $1,000. It would be an entry level PC, but in my country, that amount falls under the mid-range level. I also didn't want to overspend as I know I would probably end up using it for working on my Excel spreadsheets and at most, playing Pizza Tycoon. After several mockups, I finally decided the parts and bought all the stuff online from various local shops. Then on May 31st, I completed my first build in less than 6 hours. The moment of truth came, and I was able to turn the PC on. I felt like a champion for a moment. I quickly went into the BIOS, installed a fresh new Windows and enabled the XMP profile like a total beginner diligently following step by step tutorials from those Youtube videos.

Not long after that, I found an issue in my build. The front panel audio jack doesn't work. It still doesn't work today and won't detect any earphone/headphone. The rear panel works fine though. I again spent the next few days reading forums, only this time to find a solution to my problem. I have tried all the suggested methods, and none of those works... Everything else in the build has been working fine (so far..) However, that audio jack problem is sort of giving me a huge one hit K.O blow. I can't claim my victory yet. After all those weeks of research and building up excitements, I found myself back where I started: a complete novice who can't fix this simple issue. It's really bugging me..

Sorry for the long writeup. None in my circles has any interest in this so I thought of sharing all of this here.. and thanks for all the information that you guys have shared in this community.

Can someone review this build in the $750 price range?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:43 PM PDT

This is my first time building a PC. I'm looking to play most games at high settings, and be able to play future games like cyberpunk 2077. Any cheap performance increases / how do you think this build will perform? Thanks, appreciate it!

Building my first PC having finished my dissertation. I would be grateful for any suggestions and input on part choices!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:44 AM PDT

I've previously exclusively gamed on budget gaming laptops so I was very limited in what games I could play. I've had my current Lenovo Y50 for 5+ years now, and I'm intending for my PC to last me a while too.

PC will primarily be used for gaming, however I am intending to do light editing and learning machine learning. For gaming my goal is to have steady 144+ FPS at 1080p to pair with a 144hz monitor with High/Ultra settings- doesn't have to be maxed out per se, I'm ok turning them down for a smother experience.

    Budget: soft £1500

Country: UK. Prefferably with amazon, however one can't be picky amidst the pandemic

    !CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X £200

?CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Slim CPU Cooler £52

!GPU: EVGA RTX 2070 SUPER - BLACK £520

    ?Motherboard: ASUS Prime X570-P £170

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4-3200 CL16 £65

Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 1TB NVME SSD £180

    Case: NZXT H510 £73

??Power Supply: (Corsair VS 650W 80+ £72) amazon claims not yet released. Can't seem to find much in stock, any suggestions welcome!

    Windows ~£110

    Total: £1442

I marked CPU and GPU with a ! as I'm pretty set on the choice of 3600X & 2070S pairing.

The components I marked with a ? I'm unsure about and I would love your input. Particularly regarding the PSU as I'm struggling finding thing in stock on amazon. What are some other good vendors?

Can I ask for monitor advice here? Current placeholder is BenQ ZOWIE XL2411P 24" 1080p 144Hz £189

Build slowly and buy the parts or wait till I have the money and buy it all at once?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:56 AM PDT

So yeah like the title says, i'm planning on building a pc to play games but i don't have the money just yet, and I'm probably won't till december at least, I already have the parts I will use for my PC and I don't think i might change them in the future since it's the most bucket friendly I could find for what I wanted. The thing is, the mobo I want is on sale right now, not for much but for a significant price and the thing is the only one left from where im buying it. I don't live in the US so prices are sometimes high for some parts and I really wouldn't like to pay way more for this mobo or getting another more expensive. Should I just buy it right now that is on sale and keep it there and so like that with the other parts or should I just wait till I have the money and if it's not available just go for another mobo?

Note: This applies to other parts but they are still in stock left so idk If I should worry about that.

Is an RTX 2060 Super worth spending $80 extra for?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:01 PM PDT

I compared two Hardware Unboxed videos: RTX 2060 vs RX 5600XT and RTX 2060 Super vs RX 5700 XT. Using these videos, I came to the conclusion that the RTX 2060 Super is not worth the extra money (since it only got a few more frames than the 2060 in the games that I will play). However, I watched one of his game benchmarks using all GPUs, and it said that the 2060s was more than a few frames better. Idk what to believe.

I will play at 1080p so the extra 2 GB of VRAM won't really matter.

How much better is the RTX 2060 Super than the RTX 2060, and, more importantly, is it worth it to downgrade from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 3 3300x in order to fit the 2060 Super in my budget?

Edit: I now realize that I was watching a very outdated video when he did the mega benchmark.

Trying to buy a graphics card

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT

So I wanted to get a new graphics card for my PC. I currently have an AMD a10-7860k CPU and want to get a gtx 1650 super. But there may be a lot of bottleneck considering my CPU is old. Would getting an older graphics card (I was thinking a 1050 ti) be better since it wouldn't be held back as much by the cpu? I've searched online for benchmarks with the certain combinations I was thinking of but haven't found any. Or is there any other graphics card you would recommend? (I'm trying to stay within 170 dollars)

Ryzen 3600 Build Advice / RAM Advice

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:10 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking at building a new computer at the end of summer and am coming up with the full specs currently. Here is my pcpartpicker list: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/BillBurns/saved/#view=yYtGqs

I am looking to get 16GB 3600 RGB RAM but from what I've seen on the MSI website the mobo doesn't seem to support it? Does that mean I need a different mobo or is 3600Mhz just not listed?

I am absolutely open to changing any part you feel should be but please note the following:

    • Yes, the Kraken X53 is overkill for a 3600, I am in a very nice position where I can buy something simply for how it looks
    • The 1050ti will probably be in the build until Christmas when I intend to get either a 16-series or 1070.
    • I really would like RBG ram, so the mobo can be switched if required, I just want a clean, mainly black interior.

Hope everyone is safe on the wake of the current pandemic and peaceful protests :)

    Thank you,

    Bill

    Is this an RMA?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 02:41 PM PDT

    Hi all,

    List of build:

    MOBO:ASUS Z390-E Gaming

    CPU: I9-9900K

    GPU: Asus 2080 TI

    RAM: DDR4 32 gb hyper X fury (2 X 16) DDR4 16 gb hyper X fury (2 X 8) DDR4 32 gb off brand unknown (2 X 16) (came packaged with the MOBO and CPU)

PSU: EVGA super nova gold 1k watt

I just finished upgrading my old build with a new board and cpu and it would not post and kept failing on DRAM test prior to post in board recommended configuration (B2,A2) so following my normal troubleshooting I used a single stick of ram in each slot and it posts with sticks of ram in slots A1 or A2 or both A1&A2 but the second anything is in slots B1 or B2 it will fail to post. Any ideas? I did not see any bent pins as that was my first guess if the general consensus is a bent pin I will look again!

    Thanks in advance!

    First PC Build

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I have been waiting to get a PC for years and I decided it was a good time to build one. I want to make sure what I have picked out is good for what I want and I am not overpaying/underpaying for anything unnecessary. I would like to spend a decent amount of money to build something that will be good and last years. I would like to spend probably around $1300-1500 on the PC by itself, not including accessories. Does my list look solid and that everything is compatible? I want to wait for the new GPUs to come out before I buy but I figure that should not impact anything.

The only thing I am unsure about is what monitor to get... Thinking of 144hz 1440p but idk if I need an ultrawide or 2k tbh. I'd appreciate any recommendations for monitors as well.
