    6 things Ive learned from building my first PC

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:05 AM PDT

    1. Picking parts can be a hassle. whether your balling on a budget or building a beast, finding parts that work together can be challenging. Although, with research and a little help from some websites/videos it is entirely possibly. Don't get stuck here keep going its rewarding!
    2. Getting the guts to order the parts isn't easy. It seems all fine and dandy in your head but putting a lot of this into action isn't easy. One of the hardest things to overcome is that you wont be able to figure it out, but you will! I have ordered parts countless times just to cancel them 15 minutes later out of fear that I wont figure anything out.
    3. Assembly really isn't that bad. Putting together your computer might actually be the easiest part. I had some minor hick-ups but I tried to remain calm so that I wouldn't flip out and mess even more stuff up. A LOT OF YOUTUBE VIDEOS, I caps this because I was looking up every little thing because I was afraid that if I put something wrong in Id blow everything up (I didn't). I would have to say the biggest obstacle I faced was that I had chosen a non-modular power supply so there was a crows nest of unused wires.
    4. BIOs is confusing until you watch some videos. I spent the majority of my time trying to figure out what in the world I was looking at until I realized how simple it is. Flash drive + windows media tool = wow that was easy. Everything after that was a breeze windows did their 30 minute updates and before you knew it I was in Warzone dying in the Gulag again!
    5. Challenge is rewarding. I was honestly shocked that I was able to get this thing to work and the hardest part was accepting the fact that my parents and siblings couldn't care less about my build LOL. All jokes aside it was actually really fun to get lost in something that I havent even thought about before.
    6. This subreddit is incredible!!! I asked so many questions that I look back on and think "What a dumb question", but that was part of the process. Besides annoying all of you I learned that there are actually people on here that care and take the time out of their day to help you!!!

    Thank you so much guys, and to anyone that is thinking of building a computer I hope this helps!!!

    EDIT: I had no idea that this post would blow up thanks so much to this subreddit once again... I honestly love the feedback and I understand some of the stuff I stated was still a novice look at stuff but I'm still learning!!! My best advice to new builders is to not be afraid of learning and testing things out... you will figure everything out and it will feel great when you do.

    EDIT (2): A lot of people were asking about specs AMD Ryzen 5 3600x Stock cooler 2 x 8 Corsair 2666 RAM (Gonna upgrade this soon) X570 Tuf Gaming WiFi board MSI super VENTUS 1660 super 80+ EVGA 600w PSU 220t Corsair airflow case

    Sorry if it's a little messy I'm on the go right now and couldn't access my parts list... if anyone has any questions feel free to shoot em I'm pretty active in the comments!!!

    Upsides of being stuck at home: I finally had time to stop settling and complete my dream PC.

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:57 PM PDT

    Electric Violet

    This has been an excellent experience, start to finish. I learned a ton, messed up a bunch, but at the end of the day I have a machine that I am excited to sit down in front of and game on, produce and edit with, and have as a showpiece and something to be proud of.

    Here is the PCPartPicker list. Sure, the 3800X isn't the best processor on the market, but it has been really fun to overclock and I am very pleased with its performance. Without going into too much detail, the AMD platform has a little bit of sentimental value for me being the processor I was given by a friend (an R5 1600) in a bad part of my life and brought me back to PC gaming and into a spectacular hobby and excellent community.

    I'm happy to finally call this build complete. Thank you all for coming on this journey with me, and I look forward to discussing it with all of you in the comments!

    Desperate times : my last computer fried, I have a budget of $1,000-$1,500(AUD) for a new PC. I am very new to this, can you give me advice on what I have so far?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:57 AM PDT

    I'm a graphic designer, I work off of my computer using programs like Illustrator, premiere pro, after effects and photoshop. I render (A LOT) and in time scrubbing/previews is incredibly important to me. I have x2 monitors with a large rgb space and I work simultaneously with the programs I mentioned before (often all open at the same time).

    I'm absolutely new to PC building. My last PC was good for its time and I didn't know what went into it because a friend built it.

    Keeping some of the parts from my old PC, these are the new parts I'm looking at upgrading to. (I'll be adding more RAM).

    What do you think of this list? Can I do better?

    List here here

    And I'm really unsure on the GPU here Someone suggested upgrading to a 1660.

    I've been trying to learn as much as I can but I'm trying for a quick turnaround and learning all about pc parts in 48 hrs is a bit difficult, but I plan to fully invest myself to learn, especially since my lack of maintenance on my previous pc lead it to its demise.

    I appreciate any suggestions or advice, Thankyou.

    First time boot up: no beep, no screen, but all fans and power seemingly working

    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:02 AM PDT

    Edit: I'm leaving this up for my own shame. I hadn't plugged in the CPU to the PSU. I'm a dumbdumb.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hey - I've just put together a new build and am trying to boot it for the first time but when I turn on the power, there's no beeps, no response on the screen just black.
    Specs:
    -Mobo: Asus AMD Prime A320m K
    • CPU(s): attempted with both AMD Ryzen 3 3200G and AMD Ryzen 5 1500x
    • GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 950
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
    • SSD: Western Digital Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
    At first I thought it might be because the CPU was too new (the 3200G) so I borrowed an older CPU off a friend to try it with that and to update BIOS and I'm getting the same issue:
    • The fans spool up (case fan, CPU fan, GPU fans)
    • There are decorative lights on the board lit up
    I've tried to:
    • Take out the CMOS battery for 2 minutes and then reinserted it
    • Take out out one, then the other, then both of the sticks of RAM.
    • Run the screen from the HDMI port on the graphics card and the mobo.
    None of it works.
    Halp pls
    I’ve noticed mostly all psu’s have reviews that say it died after a short time no matter how high quality it was
    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:54 AM PDT
    It's making finding a psu a bit hard cause I'm constantly wondering about a specific psu's quality, I assumed maybe most of those reviews were probably by people who maybe overclocked on a psu that wasn't built for that or something, it's just a bit confusing seeing a power supply that most people seem to love but then it also has a few that swear it's the worst product on the market
    New to Building
    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:35 PM PDT
    Hi, I'm new to PC building and started my first build yesterday I thought everything was going smoothly when I powered it on and it worked... for about 3 minutes, the system shutdown and I could not get it working again. After some troubleshooting, I found that the system will run without the CPU power plugged in, sadly it's useless without it. Has anybody experienced the same issues and got there a system to work? I'm running out of ideas and would rather not buy a whole bunch of new components for it to work, any help is very much appreciated.
    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
    MOBO: MSI MPG x570 gaming plus
    GPU: GTX geforce 1660 super
    RAM: G.skill trident neo
    What gpu is needed for a 144hz 1080p setup ?
    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:20 AM PDT
    Will a 1660 be enough to run games at around 100 frames for most games? I don't care about ultra settings and I'm more than happy to lower the settings to mid or even low to meet this FPS requirement. I'm planning to play on 1080p at 144hz. (Surely something like csgo will get 144 FPS atleast with a 1660??)
    If a 1660 isn't enough, what gpu is the min for 1080p 144hz gaming ?
    Build complete: ares, the tiny god of war!
    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:47 AM PDT
    I posted this a few weeks ago on /r/sffpc, but I figured I'd crosspost here to spread the good word about tiny builds.
    A while back I discovered /r/sffpc and I was instantly enamored. My old build (3570k, originally with a GTX 760 and 8 GB of memory, upgraded to a 1070 and 16 GB of memory in 2016) was pushing 7 years old and and starting to chug, even in Dota 2. I began to make plans for a new, more powerful build with a small footprint. With the quarantine looming, I decided there wouldn't be a better time for a while and pulled the trigger.
    I didn't take pictures of the build process, but here's an album of the finished build.
    I went with the 3700X over the 3600 for a couple reasons. First off, next gen consoles are going to be 8c/16t, so games will likely begin to take better advantage of more cores and threads going forward. Secondly, I do the occasional video editing or software development project in my spare time and the threads will really help with render and compile times.
    All in all, I'm very happy with how it turned out. I expect far worse temperatures with cramming a 3700x in, but the results are more than acceptable. I was also a bit sketched out by going with a 450 watt PSU but it survived overnight stress testing so I think it's solid, at least until the time comes to upgrade the GPU.
    If any Linux bros (or, god forbid, Windows bashenstein users) want the script I used to get temperature data, it's pasted below. I know it's very quick and dirty, so don't judge! Feel free to adapt it to your needs. You need the sensors package installed to use it. After I finished logging, I used LibreOffice Calc to get the data into a presentable state, as I had close to 5000 data points before testing was over.
    #!/bin/bash # Logs temps from Tctl cpu sensor to a file trap ctrl_c INT function ctrl_c() { echo "--------------------------------" >> $logFile echo -e "LOG END\n" >> $logFile echo -e "\nLogging stopped." exit 0 } logFile=#your log file goes here! sensorToLog=Tctl echo "Logging data from sensor $sensorToLog to $logFile" touch $logFile echo "LOG START" >> $logFile echo "--------------------------------" >> $logFile while true; do logTime=$(date +"%Y/%m/%d %T") logValue=$(sensors | grep $sensorToLog | cut -b16-19 | xargs) echo "$logTime: $logValue" >> $logFile sleep 15 done
    Upgrading/Adding New RAM for My PC
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:09 PM PDT
    Hello! I built my first computer recently and want to increase my ram from its current 16gb to 32gb for work purposes (photo-editing). I can't seem to find the exact pair of RAM I'm currently using anywhere so I'm wondering if it's okay to use these OLOy sticks? Will I run into any issues with running these two sets of sticks together?
    The CAS timing on my current sticks are 18-20-20, and the new ones I want to add are 18-20-20-40. Speeds look the same, but I also have no clue what I'm doing since this is my first time.
    Looking for troubleshooting help on first PC build
    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:29 AM PDT
    What is your parts list?
    PCPartPicker Part List: (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PFj3BZ)
    Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.
    Working on my first ever pc build currently, feel like I'm reaching the homestretch but am running into a booting issue. When I hit the power button the PC boots up (Motherboard LEDs are on, fans all start running, water cooler LED is on) but nothing shows on the monitor. I've tried with two different monitors and no signal. I'm using an AMD CPU so I can't plug directly into the motherboard graphics and the GPU doesn't seem to be doing anything.
    List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.
    I've tried a few things. I moved the RAM (DDR4 if that helps) from A1 and B1 to A2 and B2. Didn't seem to change anything.
    I also moved the cpu and chassis fan connector plugs around. Water Cooler has a 3pin connector that I have plugged into CPU_FAN1 on my mobo. The case's chassis fans are plugged into CHA_FAN1/WP and CHA_FAN4/WP.
    Some other concerns/curiosities I've had: For the CPU power cord, does it need to have both the 4 pin and the 8 pin ATX 12V Power connectors connected? I have an 8 pin going from the 4+4 on the PSU to the ATX12V1 on the motherboard. I also have a 4 pin going from the 4+4 CPU on the PSU to the 4 Pin ATX12V2 on the motherboard.
    The GPU is using a 6+2 PCIe connector that is plugged into the 6+2 PCIe plug on the PSU. The water cooler is connected via SATA on the back of the PSU. The motherboard power connector is using the 24PIN ATX connection on the back of the PSU (its split into two ports, a 10 pin and a 17 pin for some reason?)
    Provide any additional details you wish below.
    The post status checker has the VGA lit up solid and the CPU light flashes for a second and then goes away
    NH-D15S extends over the GPU PCI slot on a supported motherboard.
    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:19 AM PDT
    After installing the NH-D15S cooler on my X570 Steel Legend and tried to see whether my video card (an MSI 1660 Super) fits, I was disappointed to find out it doesn't despite that the Steel Legend is in the supported motherboards list on the Noctua site and the fact they have confirmed in a pre-sale email exchange we've had that it's supported. The cooler seems to extend over the first PCI slot which is the exact reason I didn't go for the normal NH-D15.
    Is their supported motherboards list wrong and I should return it or is there a mistake on my part? If so, what? This cooler has given me such a hard time...
    Strange colours on startup.
    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:09 PM PDT
    So I just bought a Ryzen 3600 with a Asus strix b450f Mobo. After playing some games and benchmarking the screen went black, followed by sound cutting. So I restarted it only to be greeter with a gray screen then the desktop. Restarted again and same thing but white screen. Is the CPU or movo bricked? GPU seems fine and worked well before.
    Radeon RX 590 not available for a entry/mid level gaming PC: Should I consider other GPU options or be patient.
    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:09 PM PDT
    Hi everyone, I'm working on a building a gaming PC with my teenage son to keep busy during quarantine. I had lot of trouble finding our MOBO (B450 Tomahawk Max) but tracked one down today. Now the graphics card we picked out is not available (XFX RADEON RX 590 FATBOY Core Edition 8GB ).
    I plan on continuing to search for it, but wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on alternatives- other version of the Radeon RX, or slight upgrades that would work with our build. We have all the parts ordered, and most are here, so would like stick with options that work with this build as is.
    One concern is waiting too long may push past the return policies on the other components if we have any issues that we discover after putting things together.
    We plan on pairing with ASUS VG279Q 27" Full HD 1080p IPS 144Hz 1ms, light online gaming, though exact usage tbd.
    Thanks in advance!
    RTX 2060 or 2060 Super?
    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:04 PM PDT
    Hey guys, I have about 400 dollars to work with left from some grad money and I'm debating on getting a RTX card to pair with my Ryzen 5 2600. I really wanted to get an RTX 2060 Super but then I'd be left with no money after, so my question is if the RTX 2060 Super is more worth than an RTX 2060? It'd save me about $80 if I got the regular model and not the super. Or should I get the Super just so I won't have to upgrade for a while? Thanks :)
    Help with FPS and Optimizing my PC build
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:50 PM PDT
    I've been having some issues with my computer. In a couple of games like fortnite, world war Z etc, I've been experiencing low fps. <60fps, especially in fortnite since I play competitive. I have to lock the fps at 60 because if it goes to past the 60fps mark the game doesn't load or takes to long to render the textures. I've seen friends and people on videos with the same graphics card as I do but they get constant 60fps and more without droping. I play everything on low so I don't get less than 60fps at any time. I've been using Ryzen Master for overclocking since I really dont know with what settings to use with the afterburner. I also have my monitor 144hz 1ms.
    This is my build.
    Ryzen 2200G, B450 motherboard, 16GB of 3000MHz ram, 240GB SSD & 500GB Hard Drive, GTX 1060 6gb, Thermaltake 430W power supply
    I activated the use of my 4 cores. Also updated bios to use the full ram. I don't know what else could be the problem
    I'am thinking about changing my CPU to Ryzen (the new 3300x is looking sick to be honest) along with my motherboard of course. I mostly use my pc to play games in 1440p in 144hz. My first question - what do you think about 3300x as my new CPU? Is there any other CPU i should consider? My second question is about the motherboard for this CPU. Which one is the best and why? (In reasonable price of course). I'm from Poland so my budget is around 1200 zÅ‚ which is about 300$ or 260€ as of today.
    Can't wait to see your replies. Have a nice day/night. :)
    Trouble with first build
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:46 PM PDT
    So I'll be a descriptive as I can here, I'm not sure what exactly is wrong or where to go from here.
    So I've been slowly building on some old computers my dad recently gave me.
    My current build: Memphis 2-S motherboard with a i5-4460 2x8gb ram 1tb Seagate hd Powerspec 650w psu (brand new this week)
    I took it out of the original HP pavilion case and put it a Thermaltake Core P3, and it had trouble fitting on because of two rubber feet on one side. it didn't fit and the feet didn't seem removable. I got it so it didn't bulge or move, but it was secured at every post. I Shortly after reapplied thermal paste to the CPU fan, and all seemed well getting it out back together. I did some of the wiring to the case, to be exactly the headphones output, USB and power button.
    Today I got my Asrocks RX Vega 56. This was added, and I booted up successfully via HDMI to my tv. The drivers were installed and everything seemed fine. A wire was detached to the WIFI antenna, and I lost signal from the graphics card HDMI. After a few minutes it didn't return, and I rebooted, but still not signal. After a while I removed the graphics card attempted to use the motherboard VGA to a VGA monitor and I have been unable to get a picture out of either since.
    Thanks guys
    What should I do from here?
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:42 PM PDT
    My son wants to build a PC, so I told him if he saves up half, I'll buy him the other half.
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:41 PM PDT
    Like the post says, my boy saved up $750 from neighborhood odd jobs like shoveling snow and mowing lawns. We're contributing $750, so we need to do $1,500 all said out the door, taxes, shipping, etc. (I'll chip in an extra $100 if needed to make him happy). I told him to build a list of components and we'll ask on an internet forum and watch youtube tutorials to put it together when I get home next weekend. I know nothing about PCs. I'm kind of excited to help him with this because he's super excited. Any advice on which videos are good to learn how to build would be appreciated. I appreciate anyone that can give me some pointers. I'm sorry If I'm sounding dumb. I'm super glad I found this forum, thanks for your help in advance!
    **Have you read the sidebar and [rules](http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/rules)? (Please do)**
    Ya
    **What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.**
    He wants to play games, he mostly plays mine craft and fortnight. He's 10.
    **If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)**
    No idea how to tell you what kind of performance he wants. I could call him and ask if it's necessary.
    **What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?**
    $1500-$1600 MAX out the door.
    **In what country are you purchasing your parts?**
    USA
    **Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). [Consider formatting your parts list.](http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/pcpp) Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!)**.
    His buddy and him put this list together and sent it to me. No idea what any of this means. It took me a minute to figure out how to format it like the help page at the link says. Is it right?
    Onboard Graphics on Intel CPUs
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:40 PM PDT
    I just upgraded my CPU to an i3-9100F. Being a noob what I didn't realise at the time though was that the F meant no onboard graphics. I previously had a 3 monitor setup, and have now lost this due to my GPU only supporting two monitors. I was looking at replacing the CPU again but have two questions -
    1) If I do this, would I expect the option in my BIOS to enable multi monitors to appear? (I also bought a new ASrock motherboard which should apparently have this option but doesn't at the moment. IDK if it's just because of the CPU)
    2) Does having onboard graphics improve the performance of the dedicated GPU by 'decreasing its workload' so to speak?
    I don't want to buy a non-F series if it's not going to do what I want, but would also rather spend that extra 30 to get the third monitor back than buy a new GPU. Thanks!
    QLC Vs TLC for a boot drive?
    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:32 PM PDT
    I'm trying to decide between the crucial p1 1tb (QLC) or the Samsung 970 Evo 500gb (TLC) for a boot drive. So which ones better?
    Thanks in advance.
    Newbie checking if build is okay?
    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:11 AM PDT
    Hello with the current Covid crisis I have some spare time on my hands and was wondering if anyone could provide some input on a preliminary build I'm looking at. I have never built a PC before, so just wanted to gauge thoughts and opinions.
    What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.
    I intend to do some music production, coding, and work tasks primarily on this machine. I would also like my build to give me the option to edit videos and perhaps some casual gaming. I also will be running Linux virtual machines, however I don't believe this would be large enough to require an increase in RAM to compensate. I just want a high end machine that will be able to handle all of these use cases without a stutter.
    If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)
    Most likely 1080p at a 60fps. Pretty flexible as I haven't done much gaming on a desktop (but ready to start doing more).
    What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?
    Budget is below 1,500 including the price of dual monitors.
    In what country are you purchasing your parts? US of A baby!
