    Simple Questions - April 27, 2020

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but can a possible liquid damaged m.2 nvme ssd damage other components if installed?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:25 AM PDT

To clarify: I made a stupid, stupid, $1200 mistake by tripping, falling, and spilling a drink into my build. Completely doused the ram, cpu fan, $500 gpu, and various other components. Yea, it was stupid i know, but I'm a fuckin klutz. Please take a moment of silence for my first rig.

Anyways, the m.2 nvme drive looked relatively ok.

I've got a new build coming soon and I'm wondering if sticking that nvme into a new motherboard can mess it up or other components. I've got the nvme in rice. I'm not going to continue to use it, i just want some important files and the windows key on it. I figure either it works or it doesn't, but i don't want to damage any other components.

    Any advice?

Additionally, this is the ONLY peice i will be using from my old build. I don't trust any of the old parts (especially the psu, even though it didn't get wet i don't want any fires). Everything will be completely new including the nvme once i get whatever i need off it.

Please help me complete my build

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:36 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm planning to build PC within the next month.

I''m going to use it for 1440p 144hz games (mid to high settings is acceptable, I understand ultra may not be achievable) as well as coding.

Please help me with brands and parts that I'm not too sure with. Any suggestions/modifications are very much welcomed and appreciated.

    I've decided to go with:

    • RTX 2070 Super (initially 2080 or 2080s but after doing more research it's not worth it. Please correct me if I'm wrong)
    • Ryzen 3600 (good enough?)
    • 500 GB SSD and 1TB HDD (OS on SSD and a few software/games). is this good?
    • Cooler - Need help
    • MOBO - Need help
    • RAM - Not too sure as well.
    • Case - Probably Meshifys
    • PSU - I've got a corsair RM650w (we good?)

How many of you have an overkill build that you don’t need?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I have a very nice gaming build and guess what? I don't even play video games. And for any heavy work, I have access to my school's high performance cluster that can do the tasks much better than a personal build. It just feels nice to build and have your own build. Am I the only one?

Going 4 (3+1) monitor setup, should I start using an old/second GPU for the 2 60hz monitors.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:11 AM PDT

I did not find a conclusive enough answer for this and so I will put my case forward here. Any input is very appreciated! (Sorry if it has been extensively answered somewhere else, please point me there in that case :).)

I recently bought the lg ultragear 27gl850 and damn is it nice. I was expecting that the bump up from the 1080 144hz BenQ would be rather small, but as I have been using it for a few days I am actually suprised by how much better it feels and I don't exactly know why. I expect Gsync to be the biggest factor here. I have been running 2 old samsung 60hz as outside monitors(old pic with left monitor still in landscape) and a BenQ XL2430T I bought somewhere 4-5 years ago. It was pretty nice at the time and I was quite into CS so henceforth that monitor made sense back then. I am now awaiting my conversion parts to make this ergotech 100 stand a 3+1 setup and move the BenQ upwards and use the LG as my main monitor.

Case: NZXT H440 black/black new edition
Power Supply: XFX PRO 850 W Black Edition Full Modular
    OS: W10 Pro
    Motherboard: Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON
    CPU: I7 6700K @ 4.5ghz all cores
    Memory: 32gb HyperX @ 2666mhz
    Hard Drive: 500gbRAID0_2xSSD-250gbSSD-750gbSSHD-1000gbHDD
Video Card: :MSI Sea Hawk X 1080ti
    Headphones: Logitech G533 wireless
    Monitor: Benq XL2430T & 2 samsungs60hz
    Mouse: Zowie FK1+
    Mousepad: Logitech G640 ESL Edition
    Keyboard: Coolermaster Masterkeys M RGB
    Webcam: Logitech C920

This my Q3 2016 build I am currently using, It's ageing but will have to do for the foreseeable future as I'm literally moving out in a day or three. I have been running all monitors off my 1080ti but I noticed some weird performance when having OBS and twitch open actively on the external monitors while streaming. I can't really put a finger on it, it's not FPS, it's not stutter, but I just feel the need to close OBS and twitch down because the BenQ just didn't feel like it normally would without streaming and having those windows open. I use high bitrate (50k+) NVENC streaming to a Ubuntu 19.04 Dell R710 server over the LAN and do the actual transcoding and pushing to twitch and mixer happens there with nginx-rtmp-ffmpeg (pet project of mine along being a testing homelab device).

So now my actual question: I have 2 old ASUS ENGTS450's laying around from my old 2008 build that I used in SLI for a while. I am wondering if it would be worth it to run my crappy samsung 60hz'ers on a single GTS450 card and only run the 144hz monitors on the 1080ti. Could perhaps solve the "issue" I was experiencing with having (media)windows open on the 60hz screens. If the 450's are to old I will consider buying a low end more recent Nvidia card, no problem there. I also have an older Nvidia Quadro card I was planning to use for the R710 and the transcoding but that one is already @ the new appartment so I'm not sure which one exactly it is, but I could also use that.

TL;DR: going to 4-monitor setup. Is it worth using an old GPU (gts450 or quadro ~4000) for the 60 hz displays and use my main 1080ti for the 144 hz displays?

    my pc goes dark randomly

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:57 PM PDT

so i just installed a new rtx 2070 super 2 weeks ago and it has been going very smoothly for me and i'm happy with the way it preforms.

but 3 days ago while i was playing normally the screen went dark on me and the case fans started getting loud, i restarted it and it posted normally but i noticed the resolution has changed. for some reason the nvidia drivers got unistalled from the gpu, i downloaded them again and it started working normally after

and just now the same thing happened to me again but when i restarted it it took about a minute to turn and but the drivers are still there, so i don't know if the problem is from the gpu or something else, please help

Planning a gaming pc build with a budget slightly above $1000, does the build have any problems?Advice and suggestions appreciated.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:00 AM PDT

First time builder with very little experience, planning to make a gaming pc build with a budget that can go slightly above 1000$ USD, getting parts from USA. I plan to play video games such as CSGO and R6 with 1080p running well over 60fps. I really want to know if there are any problems with the build and if it is worth it, advice and suggestions regarding parts are very appreciated. Also questioning if a cpu cooler is needed and what fans are needed with the build.

First time PC builder. Afraid of space between CPU heatsink and GPU

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:40 PM PDT

Too much open space inside chassis?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:59 PM PDT

I bought the Thermaltake view71 case for my first build simply because I loved the looks and style. I'm nowhere near dissatisfied in my choosing, only concerned that this case might be too big for just simple air cooling as it is made to support a liquid cooling system. atleast I'll have room for that later on But for now my only plans are for air cooling. There is about 7" of space between my front intake fans and and all the hardware, is that too much? The reason I ask this is because I had the fans mounted on the inside of the mounting brakes, and got decent temps, low to mid 70s while benchmarking. But lastnight I decided to put them on the outside of the mounting brackets(would only be about 2" farther from hardware) and temps rose atleast 5°on average. https://imgur.com/a/7wXc18T

The bargain hunt spare parts PC now lives on as two seperate builds!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:56 PM PDT

The now 3rd stage of this monster of a PC (not because it''s all that good, but because I put it together the same way that Dr. Frankenstein put together his monster) is officially complete.

Years ago it started as a humble low end gaming pc, dog slow and old as shit but it was cheap for what it was, bought used for 150€:

    Intel Core2Quad Q9400

    4GB DDR2 RAM

Nvidia GTX 750 (non Ti) 1GB

    1TB random slow HDD

    Subtotal: 150€

Then came the first wave of upgrades, I was able to buy a cheap i5 and motherboard combo. I scavenged around a bit more and got a pretty good deal for some ram. I still used the old GPU for quite a while but that switch is not worthy to be a new iteration of my monster. After some hunting I was able to get an RX480 8GB for pretty cheap:

    Intel Core i5 3470

    16GB DDR3 2400 MHz RAM (gskill Ares)

AMD RX480 8GB (a BIOS modded early model 4GB to be exact)

    same random 1TB HDD

    Subtotal: 423€

The third iteration came by with a mystery deal and a seller who didn't know what he was selling, some sort of IT parts dealer (think cables, old monitors) put up an ad just saying "Gamer PC 4TB/8GB" with three pictures, one of the front, one of the side with the cover off and one of the fan for whatever reason? It had a Ryzen 5 sticker on the front and it was listed for 100€ so I had to go check it out. When I went there I took off the cooler and rubbed away at the thermal paste until I could see the Ryzen Logo, to my surprise it also had a 512 gb SSD in it. Seeing how I only took the GPU from the old PC I threw the GTX 750 back in and made a second rig for my brother.

    Build of Theseus:

    AMD Ryzen 5 1600

    8GB DDR4 random ram

    AMD RX480 8GB

512GB Sandisk 3D SSD, random 2TB Toshiba HDD

    Subtotal: 260€

    Parts Bin Special:

    Intel Core i5 3470

    16GB DDR3 2400 MHz RAM (gskill Ares)

Nvidia GTX 750 (non Ti) 1GB

    same random 1TB HDD

Subtotal: 263€: (comparing what I paid over the years to what I paid for the Ryzen Combo and GPU this seems like a lot)

    Total: 523€:

So why did I even write this up? I just wanted to share the story and wanted to maybe become an eye opener regarding used parts and iterative upgrades. Most of the 500$ budget or similar people would be better off going with used parts or looking maybe 2-3 generations back, oftentimes you get the same or better performance for the same price by getting older high end parts instead of current midrange, and most people don't take that into account. Mosst people don't need to build the be all end all rig every 6 years, just get what suits your needs right now and adjust the rig as you adjust yourself. Next on, some RAM, cooler and case for build one, a GPU for build two and long term a newer GPU for build one and some sort of CPU/Mobo/RAM combo for build two.

What do you do with your leftover stock CPU fan?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:20 AM PDT

I purchased a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition to use in place of the Wraith Spire that came with the Ryzen 5 3600x for my PC build later last year. I'm curious to know what other people do with a spare CPU cooler. There's hardly any interest on local classifieds - my guess is that everyone either has their stock fan in their system or lying around as well.

Old PC wont connect to monitor when swapping cpu's

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:25 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have an old pc that I was trying to refurbish into a dedicated minecraft server for me and my friends! Only issue is my old cpu runs at 100c even with a stock intel cooler on :(

Luckily I had a spare cpu from an ex lying around that I threw in there hoping it would have cooler temperatures but instead the pc doesnt connect to the monitor anymore. Ive tried using both an hdmi and a dvi cable on the gpu and motherboard ports and have had no success. But when switching back to the older i5 that sits at 100c the pc connects fine to the monitor with no issue. Do I have to reinstall windows? Not sure what to do!

    Parts:

    MSI z87-g45 mobo

    8gb ddr3 ram

    gtx 760

    500gb hdd

    i5 4670k(the 100c cpu)

The spare cpu I tried was an i5-4690k

What should I upgrade to increase fps?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 03:19 PM PDT

I have a 240hz monitor and would like to increase my avg fps in game since I dont use G-Sync/V-Sync. Mainly Play Modern Warfare.

    Heres my current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Gidrah/saved/F4RnQ7

Also instead of upgrading would a better solution just be to run my monitor at 144hz?

    First Small Form Factor PC

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:35 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, and running some computational fluid dynamics models (CPU not GPU). My favourite games are the Fallout series which I'd love to see in true high rise, but also want to play the latest COD and others (particularly with COVID on). I'm keen to discover others.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to be able to VR on decent settings, 4k on older games (like maybe the Fallouts?), but don't need 4k on the newest right now. I would like a build where I can easily swap out the GPU in the future.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    2k - 3k AUD

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Land of the Kangaroos (Australia)

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RYHG6R

Case: I did a lot of digging on what was not too tall, and did not have a vent on the top which would be poor circulation. I think this is the best i could do thermally? I did also look at the thermaltake V1 but I think the Node comes with filters while the thermaltake Core V1 does not?

Cooling: I would love to do an AIO water cooler for the CPU (like a kraken?), but given the case size I wasn't sure I could fit a water cooler, the radiator, and still have sufficient fans/air space to keep the rest cool.

CPUs: I'm generally an intel person, but I understand performance per $ AMD is doing well.

Motherboards: I am not fussed with a motherboard, but I do not have another CPU, so I simply chose one that partspicker did not warn me would need a different CPU for a Bios update. I also went for this one over the Asus as I read somewhere that the Asus uses a thermal pad instead of paste and that might not be as good. I live in Australia without A/C. It gets hot.

Storage: I might just get the SSD for now, and install the HDD later. Is it hard to install another hDD later? Should I get 2x4TBs instead of 1x8TB to not 'put my eggs all in one basket' in case of drive failure?

How many HDD and SSDs could I fit with this arrangement?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Key note, I am vertically constrained, both spatially and in terms of having the top of the PC exhaust hot air. The PC will be on the bottom shelf of my bookshelf (open back though)

MAX DIMENSIONS: Sliding onto the shelf from front: - 270mm high once past front has about 50mm to the shelf above. - 600mm wide - 380mm deep I could slide the computer in from the side with a height of 320mm, but at 320mm it will have no gap between it and the shelf above.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

    • PS thanks mods for the useful format.

    Sufficient Power?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 03:18 PM PDT

    Hey, I was wondering if I could get some feedback on this build. I was wondering if the built-in 600W supply on the Inwin A1 could handle these components;

Also somewhat unrelated question, if I have a display plugged into the motherboard HDMI out, would it be taking away processing power from other tasks such as encoding video if there was no GPU in the build? Cheers!

    Ordering Parts Soon, Thoughts?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 03:11 PM PDT

Ordering parts for my girlfriends pc soon. I'm still new to building and hardware in geberal so I had help from somebody on reddit a while ago ti put a list together. She's mostly just going ro be playing Stardew Valley, MC, and Sims so the specs look fine for all those, just wondering about fine tuning. Thoughts?

What ia the difference between graphics cards?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:24 AM PDT

When I hear YouTuber say, "i'm going to be using a Radeon RX 5600 XT" I assumed that there was only one version, but when I type it into pcpartpicker there are dozens of options, why? Why can i get a Radeon RX 5600 XT for $400 if I can get one for $300? What is the difference between the two?
