    Simple Questions - April 08, 2020

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

GPU says 2080 on it but shows up in PC as a 2080 Ti

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 10:12 PM PDT

So I bought a 2080 off someone and noticed that it was super beefy for only a 2080 and when I got home I noticed the backplate said 2080 Ti, it shows up on geforce experience has a 2080 Ti, and in all the benchmarks it competed with the 2080 Ti's, it's extremely weird and I can't figure out if I just got lucky or what happened lol

Looking to build a decent office PC for my dad

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 09:09 AM PDT

My dad's birthday is coming up soon and I wanted to build an upgrade for him (and a bit for myself everytime I have to troubleshoot it) and I was wondering what good specs would be for a more office oriented build would be? I've only every built and researched into gaming PC's so I don't know what's overkill and not when it comes to basic desktop use.

Currently I have an out of use i5-7500 (without a cooler) and an RX 480 with an Asrock b250m pro4 mATX board. I'm looking to spend about £200 on the rest of the build, but a bit more isn't too much of an issue. Can someone help me out picking decent parts for a light use case work loads? Thanks

Check my build before I pull the trigger and buy the components.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 09:30 AM PDT

This will be my first pc build. I would want it to be double checked by someone who knows what they are doing. Ill link the components to the build down-below. If things need to be changed try to keep it in similar price range my budget is $1400.

Bought a PC case with horrible cable management space and now I'm worried about my cables breaking up my airflow, please help.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:57 PM PDT

    Picture: https://imgur.com/ZDjtB7d

So I bought this case for 20 dollars on Black Friday. Little did I realize how terrible the airflow and cable management is is while stock. I took the front and top translucent panels off and replaced them with AC filters to protect against dust, which helped immensely with airflow. I have two Thermaltake Riing 12 fans up front, one on the rear, and the stock case fan on top as an exhaust. I'm wondering how bad my cable mess is messing up my thermals. I've tried my best to tidy it up as much as possible, but it's difficult with this case and a non-modular PSU. I'm not favoring buying a new case, but if it's seriously effecting performance then I'd consider it.

My GPU and CPU are both undervolted to help with thermals. My RX 580 runs at 1385 Mhz max at 1050 mV and my Ryzen 5 2600 on the stock cooler is at 1.1 volts at 3.7 Ghz with stock cooler. After gaming on CoD Modern Warfare all night, my GPU usually reaches 66~ degrees, with a few degrees variation and my CPU usually stays at or around 60-61. Do I need a new case?

    New PC Build ($2000 Budget)

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 10:03 AM PDT

I'm not new to PC Gaming, but new to building a PC. I've put together the parts list below in hopes of getting feedback/suggestions on what to switch up. I'm aiming to keep the budget under $2000, so I will be looking at Marketplace/Kijiji to save some money where I can (Would only be looking at unopened packaging etc. aside from the GPU/Case etc.).

I want to run most games at 1440p/144hz type deal for years to come and then upgrade as parts such as the 2080ti drop down in price to a point where its feasible (Like when the 30xx series drops and fanboys run out to buy and sell their old units).

Am I dreaming with this setup as is, should I change items up where I can save 30% for only a 10% drop in performance type thing?

I wanna give a big shoutout to the mods and XFX, for how insane this 5600 XT is!

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:52 PM PDT

I won the XFX 5600 XT from the 2 million subscriber give away, and I'm astounded by how powerful this bad boy is. I have been fawning over this card for the last 24 hours since I got it and I'm constantly blown away.

I just want to say that I'm extremely grateful for such a gift, and it's also an incredible upgrade from my GTX 750ti. It's murdering everything I've thrown at it so far with no freezes or lockups. Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, DMC 5, Tomb Raider, and League of Legends feels super smooth on max settings. My days of grunting while lowering settings as of now, is over!

I feel like this card really was the missing piece to make my build look as sleek and nice as it should. I feel like I've blown up all my friends messages about how great it is. So I really wanna thank the mods here at r/buildapc for facilitating the giveaway and XFX for making the whole process as smooth as possible.

    Final Build Pic!

    Current Specs list:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
    • GPU: XFX 5600 XT
    • RAM: Team T Force RGB 2x8gb DDR4-3200
    • Primary Drive: Crucial P1 1tb M.2 NVMe
    • Backup Drive: Crucial BX500 128GB
    • Motherboard: Asus PRIME B450M-A/CSM
    • Case: NZXT H510
    • PSU: be Quiet! Pure Power 11 500W CM

And especially thank you at r/buildapc for being a welcoming and great community for support and help!

I’m really glad I bought my R5 2600X back in February

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 06:55 AM PDT

I was just screwing around on pcpartpicker and Amazon looking at prices and stuff and I noticed that prices for any Ryzen 5 cpu are quite a bit higher than they were only a couple months ago. This made me think how glad I am to have bought my Ryzen 5 2600X on Amazon back in February for $164.99 CAD or $117.78 USD. Currently on Amazon Canada there isn't any pricing available on the 2600X, and the plain 2600 is going for $196.99 CAD or $140.47 USD. I know it isn't that big of a price change but it certainly makes a difference for a student on a tight budget such as myself, even without the impact coronavirus is having on our incomes.

Anyways just some thoughts I had, happy Wednesday!

I want some feedback on a part list I made

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 11:16 AM PDT

I have never built a pc before, but after watching a few videos and looking at some posts I put together a pc part picker list and I wanted to know what you guys thought. I will mostly be using it for gaming.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/BirdIsTheWorld/saved/#view=6M768d

It is just below my budget, but I was wondering if it is worth it for the $200 more for the 2080 over the 2070, also if the ryzen 7 3700x was worth it over the ryzen 5 3600. Please let me know if you see anything wrong with the build or anywhere I can save cash, thanks!

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 02:01 PM PDT

Hello all. i just cleaned out my PC and didnt unplug anything minus the input/output cables. Everything works fine but now i have a border around my MSI OptixMag24C. GPU is an rx580. My research has brought me to the AMD control panel to overscale in the options but this isnt an option for AMD control panel anymore. All other drivers are up to date. If anyone has any ideas thatd be appreciated!

    Pc just stopped working

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 11:10 AM PDT

Turned my pc off last night before I went to bed. Turned it on this morning and the front panel LEDs turned on for half a second, then turned off. The EZ Debug lights lit up CPU first, then the rest turned on for a millisecond, then turned off. If I try to press the power button again, nothing happens. I have to unplug and replug in my power supply cable for something to happen again. All the cables look to be in order (GPU, CPU, and 24-pin connectors are all good).

    I'm using a b350 tomahawk. Ryzen 5 1600 (watercooled by coolermaster ML240L RGB(Ik but I'm gonna upgrade my cpu soon)) GTX 1660 16 gigs of DDR4 3200

HELP! Build nightmares - 2950X build posts fine, but can't get into Windows Installer...

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Hello there. I'm at wit's end. I've worked on this for a little more than a year and a half in the few spare time that I have with no progress and I need help, as even after bringing it to an IT company - and having plenty of experience with building rigs myself - I am at a dead end and a bunch of money lost/wasted.

    -Build Info-

    CPU:

     AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X

    Motherboards:

    (1st) ROG Zenith Extreme x399

     EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 Ti

    RAM:

     4x G.SKILL TridentZ RGB DDR4 3200 (F4-3200C14D-16GTZRX) \[ DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 ( Two Kits of 2 x 8192 MB) @ CL14-14-14-34 1.35v \]

    SSDs:

     V-Nand SSD Samsung 970 EVO NVMe M.2 \[ 1 TB \] (MZ-V7E1T0) WD 3TB HDD

Windows 10 Pro (USB Key) Windows 10 Pro (DVD)

    Case:

Thermaltake View 71 Tempered Glass Snow Edition

    ! ! HELP ! !

This build has not been able to be up and running since it's initial purchase, back in December 2018. Frustrating? You have no idea...

I have built many computers, so this isn't my first rodeo. It is the first time I've thrown up my hands in defeat and could'nt troubleshoot the root issue(s) myself.

    THE ISSUE:

I can't get an OS to install. I get stuck at either the BIOS Logo or the Windows Logo with the spinning dots, either freezing up or spinning forever. POSTing has never been an issue, whether on the ROG Zenith Extreme or the Gigabyte Designare EX.

    --- Problem [1]:

The Windows USB Key installer I initially got NEVER worked. I would get an error about it being corrupted and/or missing files, regardless of trying the 32 bit or 64 bit install. See picture for an example:

    https://imgur.com/a/TQRsxwL

    \[1\] Solutions Tried:

    > Created my own Installer USB-Key via both the Microsoft Windows Media Creation Tool (several times, with different USB Keys and Releases)

    > Created the above via RUFUS, with proper formatting and trying all kinds of different BIOS configurations while making sure the BIOS was at working/most recent updated versions.

    > Purchased another copy of Windows to try and Install via DVD instead.

    > Tried Installing with only the M.2 plugged in, repeated with both the HDD only and with both mounted as well.

    >Tried all the Above with the following:

\- Different RAM Configurations \- Different GPU \- Different PSU \- Different BIOS Settings (CSM/Ram Timings/Etc.)

Regardless of the above, I always get stuck at either the BIOS Logo or the Windows Logo, either spinning forever or locking up.

    --- Problem [2]:

Windows managed to install ONCE, and then never again, when I performed it the first time with a Media Creation Tool made USB Key.

Installation was fine, started downloading drivers and performing regular updates. Tried stress testing it slightly and it froze-up on me.

I was never again able to get Windows to install.

    Additional steps taken:

I brought the build to an actual IT company and this is what they were 'able' to diagnose:

\- Memtest was able to run and they were able to confirm the RAM is good and not a problem. \- The GPU was tested in a seperate system and they verified it could do a clean install of Windows as well as drivers and benchmarks netting appropriate results for its model. \- The Power Supply is operational, of good quality and thus gave no reason for concern. \- The CPU could not be physically tested in a seperate system due to not having compatible hardware, however they removed it and reseated it to verify pin contact and integrity (of the Motherboard and the CPU); both of which were fine. \- They concluded that the Motherboard must've been shorted, and thus is defective, as the GPU was not seated COMPLETELY due to the fact that the M.2 slot (under the Heatsink on the Zenith Extreme) produced minor blocking.

As a result of their conclusion - I purchased another board, the Gigabyte Designare EX, this time determined to make sure the GPU was completely seated.

I repeated all of the above - only to encounter the same problems as with the ROG Zenith Extreme - I can't manage to install Windows. I can't even get to the installer screen asking for Language / etc.

Needless to say, I can only conclude the CPU is the issue, as everything else is functional... and that's it not an M.2 issue (since trying to install to a HDD from both the USB Key AND from the DVD produced the same result), as well as a different GPU and different RAM configurations.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY HELP OR FURTHER TESTS I CAN DO BEFORE HAVING TO SHELL OUT MORE MONEY ON A NEW CPU!?

Please help.. I am desperate .

I can provide any additional information if required, but I think I managed to sum up everything here.

    Thank you.

A Ghost in My Machine - New Ryzen/MSI build was running perfectly for two months, then became unstable

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:50 PM PDT

    First thing, parts list -

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/mcdemax/saved/#view=ZH7p23

    Hi Buildapc,

I've been lurking on this sub for a long time, this is my first post. All the info here has been invaluable throughout my building and troubleshooting process. Thank you.

I've been troubleshooting this issue for weeks now and I'm out of ideas. Apologies for the wall of text, but it's been a bloody doozy trying to solve this issue. Any contribution is appreciated.

    - Background -

I put this build together after Christmas 2019. Everything worked well and I had a totally functional build for about 2 months. Then, one day in early March it crashed and the red CPU Ez Debug light on the motherboard (MSI B450 gaming plus max) came on. I could force a restart with the power button and boot back into windows for between 1-10 minutes before another crash. There did not seem to be any correlation between what I was doing in windows (the cpu load) and the time it took to crash.

Gradually the time to crash became shorter and shorter, until finally the pc wouldn't load windows at all, it would freeze halfway through drawing the Windows splash screen (the blue screen after the MSI splash screen).

I read a lot of troubleshooting posts from other people with this same issue. I ran memtest86 overnight (passed 100%), tried to boot from each single ram stick (double checked they were in the correct slot), flashed the newest bios, reset the cmos, looked for bent pins (none), attempted to boot from a ubuntu usb, and checked all the case offsets. Nothing worked.

Then a bizarre thing happened. In the MSI bios I used the "Memory Try It" feature to change the RAM speed to 3200mHz, and additionally enabled the "Game Boost" feature. When I exited the bios the pc booted windows normally and was stable.

    Huzzah! I had fixed it!

Just to be safe I downloaded prime95 and a hardware monitor to watch cpu temps. I ran prime 95 for an hour and the temps were within acceptable boundaries for my cpu (ryzen 5 2600). I spent the next week using the pc daily with no issues whatsoever.

Then my build crashed again. Exactly the same symptoms, the red cpu light came on, and I'm back to troubleshooting. I've since RMA'd the motherboard, purchased a lower wattage graphics card (MSI GeForce GT 710 1 GB, pcpartpicker link below), did a paperclip test on my power supply, and repeated all my previous troubleshooting. Nothing has worked.

I'm thinking that the next step is to RMA the power supply and cpu, maybe? I feel like the idiot who "tries the same thing over and over, expecting a different result." I don't know what the logical next step is. It sounds like a lot of people are having similar issues on the MSI b450 motherboards, so perhaps I need to buy a different chipset mobo from a different manufacturer?

    - TL;DR Problem Summary -

    • Red CPU light on motherboard when attempting to post. BIOS is completely stable.
    • Temporarily fixed the issue by changing RAM speed in the BIOS, but 1 week later the build crashed again.
    • Since then I have tried a load of different things to troubleshoot with zero success.

    - Troubleshooting Steps Attempted, (not in order) -

    • RMA motherboard
    • Boot to Linux Ubuntu USB (crashes same as windows)
    • Memtest86 overnight with both ram sticks (100% pass)
    • Remove ssd and attempt boot with only hard drive (no change)
    • Remove hard drive and attempt to boot with only ssd (no change)
    • Swap graphics card for lower wattage card (no change)
    • Reset CMOS (no change)
    • PSU paperclip test (passed)
    • Boot with single RAM stick (no change)
    • Check mobo offsets in case (all fine)
    • Check for bent cpu pins (none)
    • Adjust the RAM speed profiles in BIOS using msi "Memory Try It" (no change)

    - Questions for You, Possible Next Steps -

Do you think I should …?

    • RMA Power Supply
    • Buy x470 chipset motherboard (I've read that the b450 chipset sometimes has issues with ryzen 5 cpus, is this true? And that x470 should be out-of-the-box compatible with ryzen 5 2600?)
    • RMA CPU
    • Do/try something else?

If you've read this far - thank you! I'm open to any and all options at this point, and I really appreciate any feedback.

Edit: formatting. Wow Reddit formatting is a PITA, sorry for anyone who started reading this while it was still a ratnest.

I want this to be a workstation, and gaming rig. Are there any revisions or upgrades I should make before pulling the trigger?

    Making a PC

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:40 PM PDT

Me and my dad have been working on a new PC and want the best value. The thing is, he is pretty stubborn about using and AMD chips and only wants to use Intel Chips because of bad experience with AMD. How do I convince him that AMD has gotten better and beating Intel in sales now?

    Best ~200 gaming graphics card?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:30 PM PDT

I've been sort of only casual gaming for a few years now. I'm looking to get back into it but I need a new GPU as I currently have an R9 280X. It still runs pretty well with most things I play but I've been thinking of getting RDR 2 and there's some upcoming titles I'm excited about (Cyberpunk) and I don't want to be running it on ultra low settings.

My CPU is a Core i7-7820HQ which is also a bit outdated but not looking to upgrade that right now. I have 32GB of RAM and my PSU is a Corsair CX 550 which I'm willing to upgrade if needed for the GPU.

I understand I won't be running on Ultra settings, but I just want to be able to play newer games and not have it look hideous. I'd like to keep the spending around 200 bucks for the card itself, give or take a little bit for the right deal.

Going to Micro Center to build a PC to edit 4k video using Adobe Premiere Pro. I prefer to have 32GB of Ram. I linked the system requirements from Adobe’s website. Thanks in advance.

    Adobe Premiere Pro System Requirements

Hiya, I can't go into Best Buy to ask for help choosing a computer (online order and curbside pickup only which makes me uneasy), so it looks like my best options are you guys and Micro Center!

My first build! Some advice needed

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 08:42 AM PDT

It's finally time to get a new PC after 9 years! and I thought of this build:https://es.pcpartpicker.com/user/Beatriu/saved/#view=KdP7XL (1208€ Amazon Spain)

It will be a 1080p gaming PC, my total budget would be 1000-1200€.

I'm quite unsure about the Motherboard, I don't know if it's the right fit regarding the GPU I've chosen. Just in case you guys make some suggestions, I'd need at least 1 SATA connection (to keep using my 1TB HDD).I'm open to downgrade or upgrade the GPU (in the latter case, downgrading the cooler and case to keep my budget).

It would be great if you can give me some advice :)

    Thanks a lot!!
