This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is a 1660 Super and a Ryzen 5 3600 both good for a starter PC?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 07:12 PM PST

I'm starting to build my first PC from Micro Center and they suggested both of these

    My budget is about $1,000

Edit: holy cow I woke up with 100+ messages. Thank you all! I will try to read them before work

Edit 2: holy moly! 350 messages! I'll try to read all of your answers. Again, thank you all for helping me. I'm going to make a post with all my specs later and ask you guys if it's worth it or if I should replace certain parts with others

The Wraith Prism Cooler: a gorgeous stock cooler that gave me a heart attack during installation.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 06:47 AM PST

Seriously. The last time I installed an AMD Processor was 6 years ago, and I'm pretty sure they used the same weird clasping mechanism to secure their coolers back then as they do now. For the unaware, the wraith prism is installed by having these metal clasps lock onto metal brackets that surround the processor. The process of getting these clasps to lock on requires a LOT of force, and in my case, quite a bit of fiddling with the cooler. I was terrified of indirectly applying force onto my $300 cpu and potentially bending pins. There aren't a lot of very good instructions about installation either. Anyway, the cpu works perfectly and the prism is very pretty. I just wish I didn't almost die in the process of installing it.

What happened to the price of the 2070 super

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 04:57 AM PST

Why is the the 2070 super 550$ when it used to cost 20$ more then a 5700xt that at the time cost about 480$.

it doesn't make sense because now the 5700XT is closer to 400$ but a 2070 super is 550$

Why would the price increase when it's compitions price decreased?

Is that 150$ difference worth the rtx on and like 5-10 more fps

    Questions about my first build

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 07:26 AM PST

I'm building my first PC, moving from a crappy Lenovo (Radeon r5 integrated and 4gb of ram, yikes) and I have a couple questions

I play a lot of Assetto Corsa, Spintires, Wreckfest, Dirt Rally, Warframe, and WoW. My goal is to be able to run these titles at Ultra settings, and 100+ fps.

I want to experiment with VR as well down the road. Will the build I link be suitable for games like (again) Assetto Corsa, Saints and Sinners, Boneworks, etc, with similar performance.

Here's the build in question on PC part picker: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gZJVf9

My budget is around $1500 - $2000 CAD, and if there's anything you would suggest to change, let me hear it! I plan on purchasing everything from Amazon, if that matters.

    Thanks in advance

    OS on SSD/Removing from HDD

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 11:43 AM PST

Hello all. So I'm half overhauling my pc today and I finally got an ssd. My question is would I be able to put the OS on the ssd then plug back in my HDD and remove the OS just by simply deleting it? Or is there a better way to do this? I was thinking of just a fresh install for everything

Does my CPU heatsink require a 4 to 5 pin adapter?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 07:44 AM PST

I have a decent PC but get low FPS

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 12:23 PM PST

GPU: GTX MSI 1660 super. CPU: i7 4970k. Memory: 16 GB RAM.

I found a video on YT.. the guy had the same GPU and a very similar CPU and was getting 250-300 fps in the same game I'm playing with the same settings I'm using... and I'm having 90-150 fps

    Notes:

*there is nothing else is being used in the background (except for chrome.)

**i recently changed the CPU thermal paste (Arctic MX-4.)

***the temperature of the CPU is now 75 C and the GPU is 53 C which is within the normal range.

****CPU and GPU percentage use are 53% and 40% respectively.

folks, what could the problem be?

Noob at PC building and I’m a little confused about cases, Motherboards, and GPUs

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 01:16 PM PST

So I know what they do but I have a major question or two about each.

Motherboards: How do you pick a motherboard besides size and if it has WiFi or not? Are those the deciding characteristics of a motherboard?

GPUs: There are like 50 bajillion options for, say, a 2060. How do you choose? Does each card have different features or what?

Cases: What are the major differences between ITX, Mini-ATX, and Mid-tower ATX? For a smallish desk should I plan on keeping it under the desk and just having cables everywhere?

The thing about the WD NVME is that the mobo comes with a heatsink but I don't know if should remove the sticker on the ssd before applying the the heatsink or if the sticker conducts heat? You can see the sticker on the store page.

For the GPU I have a friend that is clearing his mining rig and he's giving me the choice of card out of the aero 8gb OC and the same thing in TIX factor.

    https://us.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1070-AERO-8G-OC/Specification

    https://us.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1070-AERO-ITX-8G-OC/Specification

Which is better? The ITX should run cooler? Does it matter if it's within the expected temps?

Do you see anything that doesnt work?

The PSU has been working for 10 years without issues so I guess it's still good.

    Thank you

    RGB Wire help

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 07:18 AM PST

So a couple months ago I built my first pc, coming from console, and I'm loving it. I went with an all Asus Rog build since I loved their aesthetics and such. One problem I have though is that my PSU (asus rog Thor 850w) only stays the red color and I can't sync it to aura sync. I found the right wire that goes into the psu and the other end that goes into the 4-pin connector to the motherboard, but there's some sort of black cover over one of the holes preventing me from connecting the wire. My question is: do I need a new wire, or is there some way to take the black cover off? Here is the link to the photo to try and help. Thanks in advance.

    Need Help Diagnosing Faulty Hardware

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 02:16 PM PST

    Hi Everybody,

I've been having issues with my computer since April of last year, there would be times such as now wherein as soon I reach the desktop, the desktop just refreshes infinitely and Im unable to click on anything, before this happened, here are other issues.

    • Unable to open file explorer as it just closes itself immediately.
    • Computer would always blue screens on the first boot.
    • Computer would be prone to blue screen if I did not restart it after the boot.

I have in the past tried cleaning the components, I've tried to see if there were any loose cables, I have reinstalled windows 10 many times (not via usb stick). I've had my computer for 3 years now and I suspect that it is likely a hardware issue.

Ryzen Build - I need help choosing parts.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 02:12 PM PST

    Hello reddit,

I'am planning on building my new ryzen build. Mainly for WQHD gaming and Photoshop. But I'am starting to study "visual 3D & game design" this year and might need some render power (Unreal Engine etc)

I sold my old i7 4790k + GTX1070 system today (still got 800€ for it = my total budget is about 1500-1600€) and need a new system asap. I already built multiple systems so I'am quite familiar with building PCs.

But I'am currently stuck on the CPU choice and what mainboard i should buy alongside with it:

My CPU choices in my budget are:

    1. Ryzen 5 3600x (199€)
    2. Ryzen 5 3600 (159€)
    3. Ryzen 7 3700x (289€)

    Mainboard choices:

ASUS ROG STRIX B450-E GAMING (163€)

ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING (124€)

I cant really see the notable difference with these ^^

And I read that I can flash these with a USB drive (without CPU on it) to work with 3000 Ryzen series.

or should I go for a X470 board? I heard the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F wont work out of the box with the 3000 series. And you cant flash without CPU.all X570 boards are ridiculously priced...

(I live in germany so I only buy at mindfactory.de or alternate.de - cheapest prices from these shops that I mentioned above)

Note that I really want that RGB stuff thats why i picked the following components:

GPU: KFA2 RTX 2070S WTF Edition
RGBRAM: 32GB RAM Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO
    AIO: Enermax LiqFusion 240mm RGB
    CASE: Sharkoon REV200 RGB
PSU: 600W be quiet! Pure Power 11 CM Modular 80+ Gold
SSD: SanDisk Ultra 1TB SATA (2x)

    MSI Z270 Tomahawk RAM Questions

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 07:14 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I currently have a i7 7700K with 16GB of 2400 RAM 2x8GB with a 1070 nVidia. I mostly use it to play Overwatch, PUBG, etc. I also do some streaming.

I am looking to go to 32GB of Ram with a higher speed, maybe 3200?

    On MSI's spec sheet it states it can use these: 3800(OC)/ 3600(OC)/ 3200(OC)/ 3000(OC)/ 2800(OC)/ 2600(OC)/ 2400/ 2133 MHz

So, putzing about Amazon, trying to find some Ram that may be the best bang for the buck and having the best in optimization. Any ideas? I used to be pretty good at putting computers together 20 years ago and now I sorta became a Boomer and I don't want to get the wrong type.

Is this a solid one? Thanks guys.

Old and new build both have an Nvidia graphics card so I'm unsure if that means they already have the same drivers or not, I'd also like to keep windows from the build. The only thing that would be different driver wise would be the motherboard is MSI instead of Gigabyte but I'm not sure if any of the drivers for that stores on the ssd or straight to the mobo

Some questions about my first build.

    Hello everyone.

First of all, I live in Italy (I will probably order these parts from Amazon Italy) and my budget is ~1000€. My aim is to build a PC that I can use for programming/compiling and 1080p@60fps gaming. I'm also looking to future-proof my build, so I chose what I think is a beefy GPU (originally, I wanted to go for the RX 580).

I'm posting here because I would want 1) to reduce the total price (1150€ from Amazon Italy) without sacrificing performance, if possible (this means: let me know if another part that costs the same or less is better than the one I chose). 2) Also, I would like to know if a 1TB SSD is enough storage for my use in 2020, should I reduce the size of the SSD and add a HDD? 3) Another thing that I'm looking for is a good keyboard (preferably backlit, I don't need it to be RGB) under 30€ and that isn't too loud. 4) Would you suggest me to wait until some new parts come out? I've been already waiting for a few years, so I don't know if it would be even worth it.

    Here's my build:
