    Simple Questions - March 05, 2020

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 04:10 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is Gtx 980 ti still good for 1080p gaming?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 08:39 AM PST

I found a used GTX 980 ti for 135$ and was thinking of my whole system. Will this be good enough for 1080p gaming for a short while? It is more of a placeholder since I'm planning to get a 1080 ti but couldn't find one in my country. Or should I just go for the 2070 Super? Below is my parts.

People who have been using SSDs for 3+ Years

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 09:57 AM PST

If you have used or are using the same SSD for 3 or more years.

Which brand is it? Did it die in between and needed replacing?

Thinking either 250gb Crucial MX500 or the Samsung.

Crucial is almost $15/£10 cheaper and my budget is around £50/$60 - Decisions - What would you personally go for? Will be my first SSD, so will be a good jump from HDD.

Is my 25’ hdmi cable causing random blackouts on my monitor?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 11:37 AM PST

My monitor is ways off the machine itself so I bought a 25' hdmi cable. Works great. Except every now and again the monitor just goes black for a few moments and then it's fine again.

It's been doing that for a while now and nothing else seems wrong. But I struggle to understand what the actual cause would be.

    Any ideas?

Mozilla creating a riciculous amount of volume sliders

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 11:05 PM PST

Not strictly buildapc related, but I tried r/techsupport without any response, if you got any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Essentially mozilla creates a lot of volume sliders in audio mixer. It's annoying. Any ideas?

It's actually like 4 times more sliders but you get the general idea.

    https://i.imgur.com/3pzCb9g.png

If not appropriate I'll remove it, let me know if that's the case. Just thought people over here might have some ideas, and since i didn't get any responses from my other post I hope someone here have a solution!

Edit; independent on number of tabs, if watching a video, listening to audio, or anything else.

Edit; An issue that mainly affects windows 10 users. Might temp fix to reinstall. Seems to be an recurring issue for some with certain versions of mozilla. Might be fine one patch, then it's back again in another. Personally had this problem constantly over 1 year. Atm on v1909 of windows with updated mozilla and it's still happening. Only fix I could find is the one below.

SOLUTION(-ish) FOR FUTURE REDDITORS AND GOOGLE SEARCHES:

Go to options in mozilla and scroll down to performance, uncheck use recommended performance settings and change to 1.

    New budget build question

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 02:18 PM PST

What's your guys' opinion for what I should get for a processor for my first budget build. I already have an AIO, PSU and a 1050Ti to use but I'm going to be getting the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F, (2) 8GB DDR4 3000MHz Ram sticks and a Ryzen processor. I'm looking at either the Ryzen 5 2600, 2600x or 3600. Which of the 3 is best, I guess is what I'm asking.

    First Build - Ryzen 3600

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 07:22 AM PST

    Hey all,

I've been putting this list together for a bit now. I think I''m set to start ordering parts, but I wanted to see if y'all had any suggestions or see anything terribly wrong with the parts.

A little bit of context: The goal is to stay below $1200 with everything included. I won't be doing a ton of gaming on this thing. My laptop is dying and for the price of a new laptop, I can get a setup 10x better. I'm building this as a fun starter project with plans to upgrade over time - likely starting with getting a second SSD to up my storage and then going from there. I will mostly be using this for running Reaper recording software and at time some light gaming (nothing too crazy). Any advice would be appreciated.

Wet CPU was let dry still good to put into a pc?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 01:47 PM PST

As title says I was putting a new CPU in my computer and I was (foolishly) cleaning the paste off of it by my sink and it got dropped in water. I immediately wrapped it in some paper towel and just left it to dry out, replacing the paper towels a few times to ensure it dried. I want to upgrade my friends pc with the I5 from his Pentium, would it still be ok to put it in his pc or would it cause damage to his components?

Pre-owned PSU smelling of cigarettes, does it go away?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 05:25 AM PST

So I got a good deal on an unused PSU, but it smells of cigarettes, there is no visible dirt or tar on the outside or inside. Will the smell eventually go away?

EDIT: I am experienced in electronics and if I'm going to disassemble it I will make sure to discharge the capacitors.

I'm also probably not going to be disassembling it because it still has warranty.

EDIT2: Opened it up and cleaned everything with IPA, still smells, but it's not that bad now, it will disappear after a few weeks I guess

    Budget single slot GPU

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 12:00 PM PST

I have a extremely low budget build I'm working on right now and need some advice, the build is an old Dell Optiplex 780 with a Core 2 Q9400, 8gb ddr3 ram, and currently a old PNY gtx650 1gb. This gpu is just struggling very hard trying to play things like CS:GO and I was wondering what single slot gpu i should seek on the used market that wont draw too much power and go for around 30-60 bucks.

Help choosing upgrades to MoBo, GPU, CPU for existing build

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 01:30 PM PST

Hey all, new dad here looking for some help. Need some advice on how best to upgrade my current build. I'm currently using an Intel CPU, and I'm seeing tons of deals on Ryzen chips, which I would like to switch to. I just need someone to review the prospective replacements I've identified and let me know if you see any potential issues and/or better options.

Purpose is general gaming. Would like to be able to play Doom Eternal when it drops at high settings. I'm assuming this will be a sufficient benchmark for whatever other games I'll want to play in the near future. I'll be replacing the GPU also in the near future, but for now I just need to lock down and order my motherboard and CPU.

Budget is anywhere in the vicinity of $500 USD for the MoBo/CPU replacements I'm seeking. (+/- $100)

    Located in USA

Here's my build as it stands. I built this back when the last Doom game was released.

    CPU - Intel Core i5-6400 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor

    Motherboard - Asus Z170-E ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

    Memory - G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400

    Storage - Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2-2280 SSD

Video Card - MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB Video Card

Case - Fractal Design Core 2300 ATX Mid Tower Case

    PSU - Corsair CXM (2015) 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified

I'd like to capitalize on one of these deals I keep seeing for the Ryzen 7 3700X, or grab one once the 4000 series is out and the price drops further.

Here are the replacement components I'm considering:

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor

Mobo - MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard

I'm just afraid of ordering these dudes, only to realize I am truly as dumb as I think I am when there is a compatibility issue.

    Thanks for any help.

    Choosing a motherboard

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 11:45 AM PST

So I have built some PC's before in the past and I just struggle right now with all the different brands and smaller features of all the motherboards that come with now. Is there someone who could try to explain to me the main differences when it comes to let's say a series of motherboards with the same type of socket. And if possible maybe even suggest a specific brand or series, just for context I will be purchasing the Intel i7-8700k so if there are some great options you could recommend for that specific processor that would help to.

Built purely for aesthetics. How bad is this build?

I haven't built a computer in a decade. Tell me what to change.

    Re-Build

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 11:31 AM PST

So, it's been a while since I have been actively keeping up with PC technology and the latest trends. I have a rig that I built several years ago to play Starcraft 2. I'm assuming that I will need to scrap everything except the case and PSU. I'm wondering what advice I could get for a low budget PC (less than $400). I am a casual gamer and my wife will probably be doing some light picture editing. I would also like it to be somewhat upgradable. Any advice is greatly appreciated; hoping to head over to microcenter this weekend.

For reference, I currently have an ASrock Extreme 4, with a Phenom II X6, I believe the GPU is a Radeon 6750 (2gb GDDR3), 600W Thermaltake PSU, full ATX Case.

What is the best mid-range CPU for upgrades w.r.t. gaming?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 11:27 AM PST

I've currently got a 5 year old system that has served me well but I am looking to upgrade. I recently switched to an NVIDIA GTX 1070 and am very satisfied with GPU power, but do notice a lack of performance on the CPU side. With all these new exciting AMD CPU's coming out I think this is a good time to upgrade.

But have not followed the CPU market as closely for years as I never really found it that important, and I now feel a bit overwhelmed. I'm looking for an approx. 300-400 EUR upgrade and this should entail the CPU and a new motherboard (as the new CPU's require a new chip architecture I believe).

I looked online and came to the conclusion that the combination of an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X and an MSI TOMAHAWK MAX motherboard would be the best option. This is not based on any experience in the CPU market, but merely as a suggestion from some articles. If this is not a good option, what option would you recommend? What should I look out for in a good CPU.

The workload is almost entirely gaming, so that should be the main focus :).

I created a pcpartpicker-list that contains all my other components with the combination I found prudent:
