This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    I blew up my PC…

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 01:50 AM PST

So a friend and installed a new CPU, RAM and motherboard in my PC today and when we went to switch it on we noticed that the RGBs on the RAM and mobo would flash for a second and the pc wouldn't turn on. We tried it again and just the RAM sticks lit up with no power to anything else, so we switched it off and back on again and there was a loud pop accompanied by a bright white flash from my power supply which tripped the breaker in my home and scared the frick out of us. We immediately switched everything off and unplugged it so as not to start a fire. I'm too scared to test it any further in case I end up killing myself, burning my house down or destroying my PC. I'm not sure if the PSU is dead (I assume it is following the god damn explosion it produced) or if it's wiped out any other components. I've contacted the store I bought the PSU from for a warranty claim and waiting to hear back from them. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? What could've caused this? Is my replacement PSU just gonna blow up too?

Specs are as follows: GTX 1080Ti i7 9700* 16GB RAM* AORUS Z390 Pro* 1TB SSD 2TB HDD (not sure of RPM) Corsair HX750i [* denotes new components]

Components that I upgraded from: i5 4690 8GB RAM (DDR3) Gigabyte Z97M-D3H (GPU was previously upgraded with no hassles whatsoever)

    TIA for any suggestions :)

Looking to build a new PC after losing my old one

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 09:13 AM PST

Hey all, my house recently burned down, so I'm wanting to build a beast of a replacement. This is what I'm looking at now https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sMbzp8

My build goals are primarily playing games at 1440p 144hz. I play all sorts of games, from modern games to R6 to LoL and everything I'm between.

I'm hoping to learn if I'm overkill or under doing it in certain areas. I'm hoping to keep the budget around where it is now or lower.

    Thanks!

EDIT: I realized my budget wasn't stated clearly enough in the original post, $2500. Also, this is the updated build with all the feedback https://pcpartpicker.com/list/s6PdMc

GPU Question: Why are people recommending the Radeon RX 580 over GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER when benchmarks says otherwise?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 09:59 AM PST

I've been planning a pc build for a while now and have been looking through Build Help to find folks who are planning similar setups.

I've been noticing that a lot of people have been recommending the Radeon RX 580 over the GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER. But the benchmarks don't seem agree with this: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare/GeForce-GTX-1650-vs-Radeon-RX-580-vs-GeForce-GTX-1650-SUPER/4078vs3736vs4167

Im no expert, so is there something that I'm missing?

Is a 144HZ 1440P Monitor worth buying given my current build.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 01:35 PM PST

Hi Guys, built a PC just over 3 years ago with a lot of help from here.

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my monitor. Currently have a 24inch 1080p 144hz Asus VG248QE. It's served me very well thus far. However my eye has been caught by getting a bigger monitor- I've got my eye on this 31.5 Inch 1440p 144hz monitor https://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-lc32jg50qquxen-wqhd-monitor-31-5-inch-dark-silver/p4890211 - made much more attractive by the fact I have £60 worth of vouchers to burn. My question is whether A. it's a good monitor and more importantly B: is it worth upgrading? Would my I essentially be bottlenecking the monitor as I don't intend to upgrade my PC any time soon. Here is my PC. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/dM7cqk

    Thanks in advance.

    Terrible PC Performance

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 01:34 PM PST

I used to get 200+ frames consistently then my I turned my head to look behind me and my headphone jack twisted and my pc froze and a very loud buzzing sound played. I restarted the pc by holding power down and powering back on.

I load back on and I notice I can barely hold 80 frames and it took me 10 minutes to load up a game. My windows felt very laggy so I did an online benchmark to see if my GPU fried but my graphics card was doing well in the tests but my SSD with windows installed was doing terribly. (In the bottom 5% compared to others with the same one.) The only thing on this SSS is windows and a few apps, it's 50% full and all of my other games are on a separate SSD.

I've tried to reset my PC to get a fresh windows install. but I'm getting error messages saying the something went wrong and no changes were made.

Am I trying to fix the right thing or is another issue causing this massive drop in performance?

Thank you for any advice or help

(I'm not sure if this is the right sub but other subs don't seem very active in giving advice)

I've never built a computer before and I'm just trying to learn the ins and outs. My friend has helped me greatly so far but I still am a little confused.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 12:23 PM PST

    [Answered] additional feedback welcome 👍

Ok so I'm going to get a B450 Tomahawk Max with a Ryzen 5 3600 cpu. I've seen that I might need a bios update but when I checked the website for the mother board there are a bunch of different types of bios updates. When I first get the parts and build the PC, if it does require a bios update, will I be able to use the PC to be able to download them? Or will I have to use my phone to put them on a USB? Also if I were to just download all the recent bios updates and use them, even if they were already installed it wouldn't hurt right? Basically I need a quick schooling on bios updates 😂

Edit: second question: If I were to upgrade the cpu to something that does require a bios update, I heard that you need to have the old cpu on hand to be able to install the bios update. Does that mean you get the bios update that's needed on a USB and install it while the old cpu is installed? Then you're able to change the cpu out?

Building a server pc to run an ARK Survival Evolved Server Cluster

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 11:48 AM PST

    Hi all,

As the title suggests, I'm looking to build a server that can run an ARK Survival Evolved Server Cluster.

The server won't be on all the time, probably a few hours a day. I'm hoping to get something that uses as little power as possible. Bare-bones, nothing fancy.

I have a HDD which I can use for the server (yes, I know a SSD is better, but that would likely be a later purchase if the HDD really isn't keeping up).

Here are the specs I will require for the server: 16GB RAM Minimum 2 CPU cores, but obviously more would be better if the price isn't too crazy. I'm thinking quad-core ideally. A reliable network connection,

Now, here's what I have so far on pcpartpicker: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/LGpLp8

I have experience building an PC before, but never have done a Server. So ANY recommendations would be awesome. Feel free to call me an idiot for the parts I have chosen if I picked awful parts, but if that's the case, please give me some advice too. I'm in Canada also.

EDIT: Re-did the pcpartpicker build because I'm an idiot and originally chose a CPU without integrated graphics.

    Internal USB header expansion?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 01:51 PM PST

Ran into an annoying snag with my new Ryzen build. My MOBO only has two USB 2 headers. Which at the time of picking parts was fine. Only things that would need them were the front panel USBs and the USBs in an expansion bay card reader. But, for some odd reason, the four front panel case USBs are split into two USB headers. One for two, one for the other two. Now, My card reader has useless USBs since I will be using the case ones more often.

I know that NZXT has a hub of some kind, but it only accepts three headers and two males (which is odd to me). Is there any other type of expansion opportunities via PCI-e, USB, Sata that would allow me to have more headers on my system? The more the better since I might want to add things down the line to pimp out my new Ryzen build.

Are these randomly branded Intel AX200 cards on Amazon legit?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 01:46 PM PST

I am looking to upgrade my aging Killer wifi card in my Dell XPS 15. After deciding to go with intel rather than killer - I found that all of the available AX200's on amazon have random chinese/aliexpress-sounding names.

    example: https://www.amazon.com/UFON-MU-MIMO-Wirelss-Bluetooth-Support/dp/B07SH6GV5S

They all have seemingly good reviews and use the intel-provided driver - But we all know that amazon reviews are about as trustable as car dealers.

To make matters worse- the actual Intel branded card seems to be sold out everywhere

Are these legit? Any downsides? Is my info going to be insta-routed to the chinese government?

Thank you for all your help.

Build for brother in law up and running

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 11:22 AM PST

Just wanted to share some pics of the build. My brother in law came to me with a budget of $600. This is what I was able to come up with, we did go about 50-70 over because we upgraded from 512 gb NVMe to 1 tb, and original intended CPU was not available.

CPU: [Originally intended 1600 AF, not available] R5 2600X

    MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX

GPU: [Originally intended 1660 super, did not fit within budget constraints] MSI RX580

RAM: 16 GB GEIL Evo X II 3600 MHZ

SSD: [Originally intended 512 gb] ADATA XPG SX8100 1 tb

PSU: EVGA 600w 80 Bronze Semi Modular

    Case: Phanteks P300A

    Cooler: Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240L

    OS: Win 10 Pro

    https://imgur.com/a/XQNaokp

    Some changes I plan to make;

The 24 pin power connector has hot glue beneath the heatshrink, making that 1-1.5'' section completely rigid. A 90* adapter will let me route it more cleanly. Likewise, a 90* adapter for the USB 3 header.

I'd like to replace the rear fan with one that matches the Cooler Master's in the front. It came with the case and is 3 pin, it is also really quite loud.

An NVMe heatsink, since the ADATA supplied heat spreader lacks any fins and has an ugly red logo... :P

A braided PCIe power cable for the graphics card, since the PSU came with braided 24 pin and CPU power only, all the modular cables were unbraided and flat. It didn't route very easily and doesn't match all the other braided cables.

I noticed now that the RGB cable running to the header on the mobo for the AIO/CLC is behind the RGB line from the pump, didn't notice this until examine the picture to post, just going to swap their position so it'll be more hidden.

The headers for the reset button and HDD light on the case were too short to reach the motherboard, and the power button / power LED just barely reached. Not sure if I should even bother with this.

I just finished building it and plugged it in and there are no motherboard lights whatsoever and it will not power on. I tested the power supply with another pc and it works. Monitor upgrade help please.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 12:44 PM PST

So I currently have a Acer FULL HD 75Hz KG241Q bmiix. Ive had it for 2 years now and might be ready for an update. My buddy suggested the Acer Nitro VG240Y Pbiip 23.8 Inches Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Gaming Monitor. From what i can tell the only real difference is the 144hz and HDR. From what Ive heard though, HDR on that budget is basically not worth it. I dont play FPS titles so im not sure if the 144hz > 75hz is worth it either. Any help would be appreciated and if you think there is a suitable upgrade for the types of games I enjoy, which are mainly JRPG or just RPG's, then i'd be fully open to suggestions. No online games what so ever. Ill put my build down below so you can get an idea of what resolution and hardware im working with. I should mention, I use tons of mods so it does damper my fps in games when i should be getting much higher FPS.

    5700XT Evoke, Ryzen 5 2600 4.0Ghz, 2x8gb 2666Mhz, b450m -Pro-Vdh, Corsair CX550M PSU.

I need to transport my PC by aeroplane and I'm very concerned

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 03:41 AM PST

Long story short: I'm emmigrating from the UK to Switzerland and the only feasible way to transport my belongings is by aeroplane. This includes my new computer (specs are Ryzen 3600X with stock cooler, 2070 Super, 16GB Corsair RAM. My case has a plexiglass screen and I am concerned of this shattering during transit). Unfortunately I don't have any of the original packaging, so I will have to improvise somewhat.

I've done some research on the internet and this forum and I see my options as follows:

    1. Disassemble the PC, entrust everything with a specialist delivery company and hope they get it to me in one piece.
    2. Disassemble the PC, wrap componants in copious amounts of bubble wrap and take what I can through as carry-on luggage (I'm thinking graphics card, cooler, RAM sticks.) I would put the case with motherboard, processor and PSU into a suitcase with plenty of wrap and padding and hope it's not thrown like a dodgeball around the airport. I've worked in delivery before, and I know that when something says "fragile," workers go out of their way to be even less careful around it.

Assembling the PC was easier than I thought, but I'm a bit frightened of disassembling and putting it back together again on the other side and I'm not too sure of what would be best for transporting. For example, should I remove the cooler from the processor? Or will it be fine as it is screwed into place? Will I have to remove thermal paste and apply more when reattaching?

I'm hoping someone has travelled with their computer by air before and has some tips for me. Very grateful for any help.

The FE is 30ish dollars more over the strix 2080 super. I'm under the impression that FE cards OC better but aftermarkets are OC out of the box. Also heard that FE has the better GPU while aftermarkets are more akin to factory seconds.

Building a new PC: OS + SSD help. Do I need to buy another windows 10 OS? Or can I just plug my current SSD into my new build?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 12:46 PM PST

I have plans on building a new PC, but wanted to just keep using the current OS and SSDs that I have on PC. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from my understanding, if I build a new PC, can I simply connect my SSDs to the new one? Are there additional steps in getting everything set up? Or is it as simple as

    1. Connect SSD w/ Windows10 on it (as well as my other data).

    2. Boot up PC

    3. All good?
