    Simple Questions - March 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    I don't understand RAM compatibility

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:27 AM PST

    Hey!

I'm building a pc for a friend and I don't want to mess it up for obvious reasons so I want to be 100% sure.

His build will be with the Ryzen 5 1600 and Asrock's B450M-HDV 4.0 mobo, the motherboard supports "up to" 3200mhz but the processor supports 2666mhz, but everyone is saying high speeds are really important for ryzen, so what's going on?

Depending on your choice of brand I can go with a Patriot Viper 8GB 3000mhz stick or a T-force 8GB 3000mhz that is a little bit more expensive

Please stop just modifying build lists.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:49 AM PST

When I was building my PC, and trying to learn, some kind people on this sub expressed interests in helping by explaining what could be better on my build. However, some people with kind meaning just left a heavily modified version of my build in the comments without any explanation. This pissed me off so much! I know y'all have kind intentions, but I worked hard to make that build list as did every other new builder did and I was proud of it! I sound like I'm a crazy person trying to deny help, but it's annoying to see it in all of these threads when questions are unanswered in lieu of a modified build list and no explanation. It comes off as "You don't know what you're doing, I do. Heres what I would do, buy these parts instead since my list is way better than the POS you cobbled together." It was way more helpful to me when someone would leave a paragraph telling me why 3600mhz RAM is better over 3200mhz rather than just changing it in the list and resending it. Please help, don't just change!!!

$3,100 (CAD) PC Build: Looking for all tips and suggestions :D

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 05:22 AM PST

    ***New***

Hey guys, thank you for all the suggestions. Thought I would clear up some confusions the title may have had. Firstly, CAD is referring to Canadian dollars as I am from the maple syrup land. Secondly, this PC will primarily be used for gaming (also, not looking to OC). Thirdly, I will be using dual 1440p 144hz monitors and that is what the components are geared towards.

Again, thank you for all the suggestions (future ones are all welcome as I will start building this PC in about a month or so). I will be incorporating the feedback into my planned build and modify as required.

I've been hearing about how parts are going out of stock because of Coronavirus, I'm planning to buy the parts for my first PC soon. And I'm wondering if this is something I will have to worry about.

I really don't want to have to wait for this whole thing to blow over, because who knows how long that'll take.

    No RGB on case fans

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:35 AM PST

So i just finished building my first PC, it works just fine except for one small issue. My case has three RGB fans on the front, they spin normally but don't light up. There's about 3 thousand wires coming from the fans and they all loop together to one connector, labelled "MAIN". However the connector is not like anything i can find on the mobo. In the abundance of random cables that come with the case, there's a couple that seem to go together to almost solve the problem, but they end with a male connector. I'm just confused

    2600 vs 3600

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:27 AM PST

Hello! Recently my pc broke, and I was checking between the ryzen 2600 vs 3600. Is the 2600 enough for 1080p 60hz? I dont care playing in higher res or more fps cause of my monitor. I have the money to buy 3600.

Should I follow Intels part guide for building a PC?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 12:44 PM PST

I'm brand new to doing builds for PC's and I am kinda over whelmed with the amount of options I have. I'm trying to switch from PS4 to PC for games like Rainbow. Is this guid worth following? Or just switch certain parts? (while it is not preferred that I spend this much, My budget caps at 1000 USD tops)

Intels Guide Scroll down some and you will see it.

Build completed! Thanks for the help!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:32 PM PST

Posted here a few days back asking for some advice on what would be my first build in a long time.

Well now the new build is all done, and running! No major dramas other than the new AMD CPU coolers being both confusing to mount (little different to how the used to be) and louder/more annoying that I expected.

Terrible reflections of my messy desk, but hopefully you get the gist from these photos: https://imgur.com/a/EhZ56R3

I must say, the MSI (100R) case was actually way better than I thought it would be. Airflow is good, looks are good (if you like RGB), and cable management options are very good especially compared to what you would have got for this price ~8-10 years ago. It was one of the cheapest components of my whole build, and I really don't think I'd be much happier if I spent twice as much on it.

What are the actual legit reasons why you should consider 32GB of RAM?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:18 PM PST

The only common reason I know is 4K video editing, professional animation work, and virtual servers.

I have 32GB myself and rarely hit more than 16GB for video editing. I did get it because I play Cities Skylines with lots of mods and I'm usually around 24GB or above usage so I know my specific use case.

    Opinions on NZXT Kraken X73?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:23 AM PST

    Hello my friends,

I'm currently in the market for an AiO. I was planning to go with the Corsair h150i PRO XT, but alas said model will be in stock mid april for my country.

I've thought about going with the X73, but I've heard that the former versions (X52/62/72) had bad fittings, would leak etc. Also heard CAM is horrendous to use.

Would anyone here maybe be able to give me some insight, perhaps with the new model, as to whether it's worth it to buy said AiO.

    Cheers and thanks everyone. :)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I pay for 300 Mbps download speed internet. I get 300 Mbps over Wi-Fi. I get capped at 100 Mbps over Ethernet.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I have used an Ethernet tester to test my cables. I have plugged the cable into different ports on my modem/router combination. I have tried to toy around with my Ethernet duplex settings but to no avail.

I tried to connect other computers to my modem, but they all get capped even lower than 100 Mbps. I'm assuming it's because they are old as sin. My PC is new as of last year.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Back of motherboard. Are there any damaged pins?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This might be software side. I don't know what to do other than wipe my system if that is the case.

    Case fans and motherboard

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:21 AM PST

My motherboard has 3 headers for case fans, yet I want to install 2 at the front, 1 at the back and 1 at the top, which is 4 in total.

The one at the rear and the other at the top takes up 1 header each, so I wouldn't have enough for the 2 case fans at the front.

Do I need to get a fan y-splitter for the 2 at the front of the case?

Also, let's say I don't add a fan at the top, will the cooling performance be noticeable or will it still be pretty good?

I've had my current pc for the past 6yrs and I think it's time for some new parts. My budget is around 4k PLN (around 1k EUR), but the less, the better. I wanna play some new AAA games, as well as old ones like CS or GTA V. Tell me if i can get sth with better value than what i created myself or is the build good enough. Thanks for any help bois and gurls of Reddit.
