    Simple Questions - February 25, 2020

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Shower thought - Why don't CPU manufactures print small patterns on the lids to show you exactly where and how much thermal compound to apply?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 10:06 AM PST

It seems like such a debated thing. Why not just show users the most optimal size and position from the start?

Reminder to go into your bios and set your xmp/docp profiles for your ram !!

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 05:44 AM PST

Before when it was at disabled setting for my docp profile (I have asus tuf gaming x570 fyi), and in gta v with max settings I would get around 80 fps, recently I turned my profile to "Profile #1" in the bios and now I'm getting on average 90-100 fps, sometimes a bit more. In games like Witcher 3 for example, with hairworks on and everything else max, I get 120 fps average. With it off but everything else on max, I get 150-160 fps. It's a huge difference in my opinion and it really feels like something more people should know about. I don't recall getting that much fps before, which is great. I seem to get 10%-15% fps gain

It's crazy how big an impact it made. Reminder to make sure your ram speeds and whatnot are all set!! (Witcher 3 FPS showcase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kGyhXfP2r0&feature=youtu.be)

If you need a video of me doing it in my motherboard, (but keep in mind like i said it'll be different for everyone and their motherboards/bios), I made a video that may or may not be helpful, but here you go nonetheless: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yfli2MO9yE

Built a computer for Hawaiian Immersion Elementary School on Maui

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:15 PM PST

Last Friday I went out to Maui to build a custom computer for one of the teachers. He (Kalei) is using the computer to help his 1st and 5th graders for computer science and STEM.

    Specs of the computer
    Asus ROG XI Formula z390
Asus RTX 2080 TI Strix (Apparently it was a GTX 1070 in the box, instead of a 2080ti. He is returning it to amazon)
Asus ROG Strix 360 RGB AIO
    Samsung 970 EVO 1tb NVME m.2 SSD x2
    Gskill trident z royal 32gb 16gbx2 3200mhz
    Lian li 011 dynamic white
    Lian li ARGB fans
    Lian li 24pin ARGB strimmer
    Intel i9 9900ks at 4.97ghz

Images of the build https://imgur.com/gallery/ctLKPZ5 Close up completed http://imgur.com/gallery/caMOnKx

I did a step by step walkthrough of the entire process, explaining what each part does to the kids. Getting a new batch of eager minds every 30minutes.

The total build took about 6 hours to complete. The teacher was really happy with it. The 1st-grade kids got to see the turn on with all of the RGB lights.

We all know RGB adds more GHz to your computer. Just like stickers on a honda.

Just a huge thanks to this community!

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 06:52 AM PST

I recently finished my first gaming build, and my greatest fear was to make a buying mistake, or choice in picking parts. But you guys were reactive to any answer, had advices with explanations for the newbie that I am, wiser than what I could expect elsewhere on internet.

Clearly, you made it A LOT easier for me (a redditor even made me a build on pcpartpicker, cheers to him! )

Even during build, I got help to understand where I made mistake.

    Love you all!

My new PC vs Xbox Series X?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 10:59 AM PST

So as many of you may have seen they released some xbox series x specs... and showing of 12 tflops of power it's got me nervous. They compare it too being more powerful than a 2080 super! A little less than 2080ti! The reason this has me worried is cus I just invested in building a gaming pc, I probably put about 1400$ in it including everything from fans to gpu. It's got 2070 Super, Ryzen 5 3600, 16gb 3200mhz ram, and a samsung ssd. I love it it! But with the xbox series x coming out in less than a year and most likely costing 500 to 600 dollars. I'm wondering if I would've been better off staying with xbox, cheaper, supposedly more powerful, and I have a ton of xbox games I could still play... what do you think. You think the xbox series x will be more powerful than my pc or nah?

How do I maximize performance for my build?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 12:56 PM PST

    I have a Ryzen 2600x, a GTX 1080 and 16GB of RAM running at 3200mhz

I can get a full pcpartpicker list if anyone wants

But basically I feel like I am not getting full performance out of my build

I don't know if this is because of some settings I have or the fact I play on a 1080p144 monitor.

Does anyone have like a basic list of things to do and check for maximum performance? (Like ocing and all that)

    Thanks!

    Problem with Gigabyte's 1660S fans

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 07:19 AM PST

    Hello

I recently built a new PC with Gigabyte GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB OC video card. I noticed that the fans seem to make an annoying repetitive noise of what seems like fans stopping and starting.

So I begin investigating. I recorded fan speed (RPM) and fan speed % and THIS CHART (sorry, it is not a good looking graph) is what I ended up with. From the chart you can see that when I manually set fan speed to 31% or 26%, it starts having problems. At 54% fan speed, everything is fine. Obviously in real world the fans dont STOP in 0.2 seconds, so they slow down a bit -> try to quickly speed up again -> make noise of revving -> repeat.

It really seems like at lower fan speed %, they seem to be malfunctioning, thus making a really annoying sound by slowing and speeding repeatedly. After some more testing (not on the chart) I figured out that the problem happens only under ~40% fan speed.

Gigabyte doesn't want to resond to my support ticket and preferably going through RMA is the last thing I do. Anything I can try before RMA?

EDIT: Found a post about the same exact problem with video. Mine does the same thing. Seems like a feature, I would not recommend anyone Gigabyte cards

    Upgrading my videocard...feeling overwhelmed.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade my vid card in order to support a VR setup. Apologies if this is the wrong sub.

As I get into it, it seems there are about a hundred potential options for even just one model (GTX 960 is what I'm currently looking at). I used to keep up to date on all this stuff, but I've been cruising on the same system for almost 6 years now and not really paid attention to the latest and greatest. ("I used to be with it, then I forgot what 'it' was!")

Anyway, I'd like to avoid upgrading my mobo if possible, but I could if necessary.

But, what should I be looking for on the vidcard side of things?

Can someone maybe make a recommendation as to what I should be looking for? Is there any real difference between the myriad of different versions I find on one model? I'm concerned I'll miss some important bit of info and find out it's not compatible with my mobo, for instance. Should I be looking at something beyond the GTX960? I do admit I've always had good luck with Nvidia and somehow my AMD cards have always given me troubles, so I tend towards Nvidia for the most part.

Current Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

Current Vid card: EVGA ACX Cooler 03G-P4-2784-KR GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support

GPU Question - 2070 Super vs. 2060 Super

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 12:33 PM PST

So I'm closing to being able to buy my first big pc but I've been debating on choosing between the 2070 Super and 2060 Super. I guess I should also say that I would be pairing those with a Ryzen 5 3600 with future plans to do some overclocking. I plan on gaming at 1080p with a 240hz monitor so I'll be aiming for high fps while also streaming. I believe there is around a $100 price difference. I just don't know if its worth it. Any help would be much appreciated.

    GPU install

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 01:53 PM PST

So I came into a gpu that I thought I'd add to the pile of scrap parts I use for a computer. I ran into two issues.

First problem: the motherboard power cable is in the way. The only way I'd be able to fix that is if the pci-e slot was higher off the motherboard. I saw that pci-e risers exist, so I'm wonder if that's the correct way to go in this case?

Second problem: my psu doesn't have an eight pin cord for the gpu. I read somewhere that you can use a six pin cord and a two pin cord together, but I'm not sure if it was case specific or if it'd be okay for me to go ahead and do. If not, do I get a cord that adapts one of my other power cables to the one I need? Or do I just need a different psu altogether?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Having trouble deciding on what to upgrade.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 01:49 PM PST

    Hey folks!

A few days ago I got some birthday money and was thinking of upgrading my pc. The first thing that I tought of was RAM because my PC is currently running one 8gb stick. Then next thing could maybe the CPU for example myb I could upgrade to the ryzen 5 3600. And I also tought of upgrading the GPU to the gtx 1080. The whole reason for the upgrade is basically that I got a 144hz monitor and this current setup can barely push frames that high. Would love any opinion on this.

    My PC

    CPU: Ryzen 3 2200G

    MOBO: ASRock A320M-HDV

    RAM: x1 8gb stick clocked at 2400mhz

    GPU: Rx 570

    4K plex build

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 10:46 AM PST

Build Ready: Just wondering if this is a good build for a plex server running 4K content with up to maybe 6 transcodes at once if needed.

I'm running a server with maybe 10ish people for now, mostly everyone direct plays. The occasional transcode. I wanted a new build that could handle a few 4K transcodes just in case and multiple simultaneous 1080 HD to SD or 720p transcodes.

Right now everything is on my gaming/personal use PC which is a i7-7700k with a 1080 graphics card.

I wanted this build to be under $1000. I've also already purchased a server case and have harddrives waiting to be shucked.

    Upgrading my decade old

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 11:47 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Now that my new kid is sleeping well and can independent play, I have found more time that I could return to the world of gaming. I recently tried to play Jedi: Fallen Order...and just...nope.

So I turned my old gaming PC into a 65TB Plex/Unraid server, and ordered my parts for the new build.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Right now the TV is an old 1080p Sony, but will be upgrading to a 4K projector in coming months.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $3500

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3800x

    MB: Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite

Ram: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB

    Storage: Samsung 970 Evo m2 NVME 1TB

Storage: 2x 1.6TB Intel s3610 SSDs (got used from r/homelabsales)

    GPU: Evga 2080S Black

    Case: Lian Li 011 Dynamic

    PS: Evga G3 850W

If you saw the case...you know what that means:

    Rads: 2x XSPC EX360 Crossflow

Rads: 1x XSPC TX360 Ultrathin Rad

    Fans: 9X LL120s

    Distro Plate: Radikult Custom

Waterblocks: All EK (CPU/VRAM, GPU, and Blackplate)

    Fittings: EKWB Fittings

Right now I'm running 2400 RAM, and I know that's probably the most practically outdated hardware I have. I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading or not. I also am curious to know about amount of ram vs speed. Like would 16Gb of 3200 RAM actually be an improvement over 32Gb of 2400?

My CPU is OC'd to 4.2Ghz.

I use the PC for gaming and photoshop mostly.

Used SSD has bad health because of low power-on hours?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 09:20 AM PST

I bought a used 256gb Transcend SSD and hooked it up with a USB 3.0 SATA adapter to my USB 3.0 port and tested it with CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark.

The speeds are fine for a USB adapter 215mb/s read/write but CrystalDiskInfo shows this info(https://imgur.com/a/sZhDJ0I).

I also got another SSD of the same brand from the seller and it has even bigger power on count and about the same power-on hours but that one got a good health rating from CrystalDisk.

Is this a false bad health report or am I missing something? Should I try to install Windows on it and use it as a boot drive?

    First Gaming PC Build

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 09:58 AM PST

Hello Everyone I am looking to build a 1440p Gaming PC for games like halo or monster hunter. Cyberpunk in the future as well as Forza. I would like to game at high settings at least 60Hz. I have a 144Hz monitor. My budget is around 2K max so there is some room for play. I want to theme it white. Would it be worth investing in a higher grade video card with the budget? Also is there any other parts or recommendations that would be recommended to change?

Advice for a digital painting, mild gaming pc?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 02:15 PM PST

Hey, been a while since I've built a tower and when I did I just went top of the line. Currently trying to put together a PC for my gf, who's laptop just died out. She really needs something that can handle photoshop, as she does a lot of digital painting in there, but she'd also like to be able to play mid-tier games. She's not an avid gamer and won't be trying to run witcher or anything, but her previous laptop couldn't do more than minecraft without getting hot.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/R6z26R

No storage included as I have a basically-new 1tb sshd to donate. Has maybe 24 hours of use on it.

Here is what I have so far. I suspect the gpu is overkill, and I dialed ram back from 32. I know photoshop is cpu/ram intensive so I was trying to keep those up on the moderate to higher end, and I know you can use GPU resources to compensate some processing. As with anyone, trying to get the best bang for her buck, while not getting her stuff she doesn't need. Be nice if I could get the price down a smidge. Any advice in any direction would be appreciated.

    Deepcool captain 240PRO V2, is it good for a Ryzen 7 3700X?

Hello everyone, I'm looking for parts to build a pc in the future and I stumbled upon the Deepcool captain 240PRO V2 and I was wondering if it was good enough for a ryzen 7 3700x.

I also saw the Deepcool castle 240 RGB V2, is there any difference in performance between these two coolers?

This is the link to the parts list that I have made:

Assistance choosing CPU for PC that will host 50 Windows 10 VM's

This unit will host an active 30 remote users doing basic business tasks like MS office, chrome, and some internal programs. I want to build it to be able to scale up to 50 users in the future. What do i need in a processor to accomplish this?

Is this something an i9-10980xe could handle? I can max this out with 128GB RAM, etc for under $3k USD

Or would I be better off with a threadripper with more cores? Looks around $4k - $5k USD for this option.

Or is this something a Xeon would be best suited for? I am not up to date on current Xeon CPU's so would definitely need suggestions here.

    Thanks!
