    Simple Questions - January 23, 2020

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    RAM question

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:59 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Really silly question, if it says the RAM is 2x8 so two sticks, is that the same as just having 16gb RAM or is there a difference?

    Thanks

"Build Complete" 76 y.o 2nd timer. Booted-up first try thanks to all the generous help received on this great sub.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 05:42 AM PST

    My 1st build was a "Dual-Floppy 80386 cpu, 256K ram, 20mb HD, 28K modem" in 1988. Things have changed a bit.

    CPU

    AMD Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor $84.99
    Motherboard

    ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $74.98
    Memory

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $76.59
    Storage

Western Digital Green 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $39.99
    Case

Cougar MX330-X ATX Mid Tower Case $39.99
    Power Supply

Cooler Master MWE Bronze 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

Went together quick and easy. Not having a GPU and cooling issues helped. The only thing I didn't understand was that 5 front panel connectors shared the same header..took some helpful advice here to learn to read the diagram. This has gotta be one of the best forums ever.
Sorry about the poorly formatted parts list. The one thing I could never figure out was how to properly post the "pcpartspicker" list. Big thanks to all!!

    M.2 Heatsink

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:59 AM PST

Hi folks, the motherboard I'm got for my next build came with a pair of heatsinks with thermal double sided tape for the m.2 slots. Question is do I have to remove the stickers on the chips of the SSDs before mounting the heatsinks? Just wondering if there is any heat transfer benefit in doing so.

Budget build for my father is complete and working

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 11:52 AM PST

Today my father got to experience his first modern PC in years. Will be used for (learning) 3D and some gaming by his wife. Budget was 550€, kinda nailed it with 565€.

    • Gigabyte B450M S2H
    • Ryzen 5 1600 with stock cooler
    • 16 GB G.Skill Aegis 3000 dual channel
    • be quiet! 600W bronze non-modular PSU
    • 3x be quiet! silent wings 2 PWM
    • 8GB Sapphire RX 590 Nitro+
    • 240GB Kingston SSD

He already owned the Sandisk SSD and a 1TB HDD. He couldn't stand the thought to ditch the DVD drive, but still needs a SATA power extension because the PSUs chord was too short after we connected all of his drives.

    https://i.imgur.com/JuNzobD.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ImcUnOc.jpg

He helped build it and had a lot of fun. I've still gotta improve my cable management and the GPU power cable annoys the hell out of me, but it's okay. Any advice for the next time?

I finally took the leap and built my first pc. I could not have done it without the help of this sub. So many helpful posts made lurking a breeze. You directed me to channels like JayzTwoCents, Paul's Hardware and OZTalks. I watched enough PC build videos to drive my fiancé absolutely insane. Here are the specs PC BUILD

Most of these pieces were acquired as Xmas/Birthday presents. I realize now that I should have purchased all the parts at the same time and not acquire over the span of a month.

This PC will mainly be used for some light gaming and streaming. I stream from consoles or emulators. I do play the occasional Hearthstone or World of Warcraft. I'm really looking forward to playing Diablo without any lag from AoE spells.

I know I could have gotten better value out of certain parts. I like the motherboard but the asrock would have saved me some money. I don't plan on doing high competitive 4K gaming so I went for ultra value with my monitors.

So far the PC is everything I hoped it would be and more. It blows my MacBook out of the water. I did have a minor setback when I bent the USB 3.0 pins in the motherboard. Thankfully I was able to get it figured out. Also, for those building your first pc, make sure you connect your case cables in the right spot. It goes a long way in making sure your PC will in fact turn on.I am also going to through and cable manage a little better in the near future.

Would my i7-6700k cause noticable bottlenecking with an RTX 2080 Super? How about a 2070 Super?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 01:06 PM PST

I posted here yesterday about how my GTX 1080 died recently so I need to replace it. I planned on replacing my i7-6700K as well, but I forgot that if I want to switch to like the Ryzen 3600 or 3600X I'd need to also buy a new motherboard. If I instead just spent my budget (about $800) on say the RTX 2080 Super, would I be super bottlenecked by my i7-6700K? What if I went with the 2070 Super instead?

If so, is there an Intel alternative I can upgrade to so so I wouldn't need a new motherboard? Overall budget is around $800ish.

PC Case Thermals vs. Noise Table

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 12:52 PM PST

    Hey guys,

So I've been trying to find a decent case in terms of thermal and noise performance and realized there is not much information out there. Besides GamersNexus, no reviews consist of thermal and noise levels, which I consider important factors.

The only related post I could find was a 2018 post by u/void-crus, which ranked the cases reviewed by GamersNexus in a simple comparison table. Unfortunately, it wasn't updated since then and I thought it might be a good idea to bring it up to date. Additionally, I modified the ratios for the TvN Score formula and included a new Price Adjusted Score column for the people who are on a budget.

The original formula put too much weight (60%) on the noise levels and I didn't find the arguments very compelling. Noise performance ranged from mid-30s to high-40s (average 39.1dBA), while CPU temperatures go from mid-40s up to mid-70s (average 55.8C). Moreover, it's much more important to properly cool your system if you plan to overclock. However, at the same time, I believe both CPU temperatures and noise levels to be crucial, hence both are equally weighted.

In my opinion, the majority of new GPUs have relatively low to moderate temperatures and are unlikely to throttle (even if OCed), unlike CPUs. The temperatures for GPUs ranged from 50s to 60s with low variance (average 53,3C).

    The modified TvN Score Formula = 40% * (70C - CPULoadTemp) + 20% * (70C - GPULoadTemp) + 40% * (50dBA - Noise20"Away)

The Price Adjusted Score Formula = (TvN Score squared) * 100 / Price

The price-adjusted score formula may look confusing, however the reason behind the squared TvN Score is to make it more pronounced, while still consider the prices. Simple division doesn't make sense because the score variance is low, while the prices range from $60 to $450 (average $150).

The table consists of pretty much all the PC cases GamersNexus reviewed. The rest are either bluntly horrible or became obsolete.

I am well aware of the shortcomings of this table such as:

    1. The temperatures are not normalized. All the cases have different fans -- which could make a big difference. However, the comparison is done in the context of a product review without spending an extra $40-60 on fans.
    2. Other things should be considered - build quality, layout, aesthetics, RGB (if you care) and other features rather than simple temp to noise comparison. While I concede, this table is more of a good starting point rather than making your final decision.

The table is filtered by the TvN Sore as the main criterion: Google Sheets

    have fun,

    NAS Build Suggestions

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:40 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

So I am looking at building two NAS's (one for me, and one for my brother). We do video editing(mainly him) and blender(mainly me) work. I wanted these NASs to act as archival storage as well as a back up for our household (as well as being off-site back up for each other). While we will use the files stored on the NAS to continue to work on projects, our higher priority projects will be on our main systems. Also, I would like to use Raid 5, or at least Raid 1.

As for the OS, I was thinking of either FreeNAS or OpenMediaVault (this one mainly because of the much higher requirements for FreeNAS). I do have some older PC hardware (10+ years old).

    My priorities:

    1. Low Power Consumption
    2. Encryption
    3. Ability to work as off-site backup
    4. Cost (I can't just blow a ton of money so bang for the buck is very important to me)
    5. High Storage Capacity (or at least expandability as storage fills up)
    6. Speed (this is the lowest priority compared to the other 4)

    My questions:

    • What OS do you all recommend? (I have never used any of these so user-friendliness is a plus)
    • What hardware do you guys recommend? (I just want to get an idea of what to be looking for)
    • Do you think a Raspberry Pi based NAS (or other single board comp set-ups) would work?
    • Would my older hardware be worth using, or use too much power? (will post below)
    • Any other recommendations besides what I am asking?
    • I'm sure I'm missing things so let me know if you have questions.

    Older Hardware:

    • AMD Phenom II X4 955 (whole computer based on it if you need more specs, let me know)
    • Intel Core i7-960 (whole computer based on it if you need more specs, let me know)

I don't plan on starting this for a bit, I'm just in the beginning stages of planning, just wanted an idea of where to start.

    Thanks for your help everyone.

A big thank you to you all.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 12:24 PM PST

Its been quite an interesting learning experience getting this PC put together. I have had this Subreddit to thank time and time again for all their endless knowledge, patience, and willingness to share.

My PC is officially complete after endless topics, some self assembly, some upgrades with family and friends, some scamming from a comp tech, and a some custom case modification.

With everything said and done my PSU Fit (required removal of a hard drive bay and removal of a oddly placed metal bracket that I assumed simply helped secure the PSU), my GPU is in and running, and the CPU cooler is installed! All together my build is complete and I must say, its been an absolute pleasure using it thus far.

Whilst I am out the money for the extra PSU and $100 from attempting to take a shortcut via dropping it off at a computer repair shop (had a rash of call offs at work. I figured this would save time, boy... i was dead wrong and am out $100 for an hour of realistic labor) . Regardless of everything its assembled and its a damn beauty of a rig.

Every game I throw at it so far its handling flawlessly, not only that but its staying at a nice cozy 68-71C without any issues. I haven't overclocked the CPU yet, but my RAM is also behaving finally, again from help from this amazing subreddit and my computer overall is a tightened up, powerhouse that is absolutely blowing my damn mind!

Thank you all very much for all your help and your time. For those whom are curious, here is the final results.

I call my build, Maximum Red.

I need help! (Im a noob)

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:25 PM PST

Hello everyone, i want to buy my first gaming pc. But to be completely honest im not that good in tech related stuff. So ill say what i have learned watching youtube videos and reading posts.

    This is the pc build:

Wifi card: GIGABYTE GC-WB867D-I Switch, Wireless, PCIe, WLAN, Bluetooth

PSU: Corsair CX Series 550 Watt 80 Plus Bronze

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600

GPU: PowerColor AMD Radeon RED Dragon RX 580 8GB

SSD: Samsung 860 QVO 1TB Solid State Drive

    RAM: G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) Ripjaws V Series DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz

    Mother Board: B450 Tomahawk Max

    Monitor: BenQ 27 Inch IPS Monitor | 1080P |GW2780 (Nup i dont need a 4k monitor)

In theory everything "should" work, but i wanted to double check with the experts since at least for me is almost 2 years of saving money. As i said im reaaaally new in this, so does this build have any incompatibility issue (I really dont want to get stuck with a part that i cant use)

And also a three specific questions:

if i connect the ryzen 5 fan, the front of the case usb cables will i still have enough headers to connect the bluetooth from the wifi card? (Just to double check)

is the psu wattage ok? The most greedy game i want to play is sekiro.

And, after A LOT of reading this monitor seems to be the best, since i really want the ips for the colors because i dont see my self playing competitive fps games to need the TN 144 hz 1ms monitor but i do see myself watching a lot of movies :3 . But once again will i have any compatibility problems?

Thx a lot everyone i wanted to play dark souls 1 again for a long time since the first time I played DS 1 was with dsfix to lower it to 400*200 (Yes it was playable and yes it sucked) So i need to redeem that injustice i did.

I have a Ryzen 5 3600. I think it only supports 3200 mhz ram but I think my ram can clock up to 3600, but I only have it at 3200 in the BIOS? Is it worth it setting it to 3600? Or is there no difference

    A build for my Husband

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 11:42 AM PST

My Husband recently got a promotion and I want to build him a present to celebrate. He's sitting on a 5 year old computer that used to be mine and it's getting to the point where he can't play World of Warcraft (!) anymore. I'd like a second pair of eyes on what I've picked out, when I did my build y'all had some great advice.

His main games are WoW and Diablo 3, which sounds like it doesn't need a lot of firepower, but I want to future proof it. He's looking to play Diablo 4 when that comes out among other things. Here's what I got so far:

    Fan Questions.

So I am getting the Corsair iCUE 220T RGB ATX case (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07RW8GLQJ?tag=pcp0f-21&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1) and it has 3 fans at the front and I am buying a fourth as an exhaust at the back. I was wondering if I need to buy another to place at the top?

Should I bother with removing/reinserting the CMOS battery before selling my motherboard?

Like will it give less headaches for the buyer or does it really not matter?

    Ryzen 7 3800x or I7 9700k ?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 01:44 PM PST

I found the PC I think I'd like to get, however I'm not really a fan of AMD. I emailed the seller and for the same price I can get the 9700k but they're currently not in stock so I would have to wait. The question is which one would be all around better for gaming? They seem super close spec wise but I'd like opinions from people who have used either cpu, heres the specs for $1800 Canadian, brand new I should add. TIA.
