My 2500k lasted 8 years. Finally time for a new build - 3600 mATX.

    My build order has been q6600 -> i5-2500k -> r5 3600

My focus has always been bang for buck. Looking for the longest term upgrades for the cheapest prices, I'm very proud of this while my friends boast about their $2000-$3000 builds every few years.

My latest build I wanted to go for something smaller than a full ATX tower as I've realised over time that a smaller form factor is simply much more practical, for lan partys and also just in general when moving (my i5-2500k survived 2 plane trips interstate in a suitcase and I promised myself never again.)

I also wanted to go for a white build because I initially fell in love with the corsair carbide 240 when looking for cases (I was initially thinking of going for a 6700 build paired with a gtx970/1060 but as time went on the value just wasn't there) it seems discontinued now so this seems to be the next step on.

It also fits very nicely in our lounge room next to our TV unit so that is definitely an added bonus.

Anyway, here is an album of some pics, a video of the first post and what I was upgrading from. The album comments have a bit more info. I'm happy to answer any questions :)

Always remember that DDR stands for DOUBLE data rate.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 12:45 PM PST

Wanted to share a funny story. Keep in mind, I'm still fairly new to overclocking. Earlier today, I was poking around Ryzen Master and noticed that the "Memory Control" was set to 1500 MHz. I think to myself "I have to change this, my RAM kit is good for 3000 MHz, my RAM must be underclocked!" so I crank that bad boy up to 3000 MHz, effectively attempting to OC the RAM to 6000 MHz. It did not go well. I had to perform a CMOS reset to get my rig to boot again.

Sharing this so that OC newbies like myself don't make the same mistake I did.

My RX 580 is the worst performing RX 580 on user benchmark.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 11:09 AM PST

My FPS on CS:GO and League of Legends seemed way lower than it should've been on my PC I built two days ago, so I rain a userbenchmark and my GPU is on the 0th percentile... What can I do to fix this. Did I just get a faulty card? https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23603148

    Motherboard for Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 08:34 AM PST

Upgrading PC soon. And Im wondering how Im going to get a decent cheap motherboard (b450) for the Ryzen 5 3600 when PCPartPicker says there may be a compatability issue with this CPU because I may need to flash a new BIOS. What should I do? Thank you.

Why are computer parts never in stock on amazon?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 08:33 AM PST

It seems like all the parts I look for are always out of stock. I know I can typically purchase off other websites but the convenience of how amazon ships is just too good. But I've had such trouble getting a the parts I wanted because it seems like everything is always "available January 19" or something like that. By the way looking for recommendations for a 2070 super. Been trying to find a good one but hard to always know what ones are best!

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming primarily, torn between 1440p and 1080p 144hz. Most likely 1080p 144hz. Mostly eSports titles, occasional AAA but not something I would focus on.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p, 144hz, usually higher settings, but okay with not max.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~700 dollars to worth with. Needs to include monitor.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

600 pound pc or 480 pound pc and 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 07:43 AM PST

Seems like liquid cooler leaked. What tests can I do to find out whats salvageable?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 06:55 AM PST

Noticed that the PC was running slow this morning. Checked the CPU (Intel Core i7 3820) which was at 60% with nothing really running, apart from open programs.

Shut them all down and decided to re-boot the machine.

Wouldn't boot up, stuck at a point where it was telling me that the CPU temperature was too high.

Unplugged the machine, turned of the switch at back reset the CMOS and rebooted. All i got was 1 long beep and 3 short ones from the motherboard (Asus P9X79 Pro) indicating a GPU (nvidia Geforce GTX 670) failure.

Pulled the case out later in the day and noticed liquid all under the case. Opened it up and could not at first diagnose where the liquid was coming from. It actually looked like it was coming from the GPU (GTX 670) seating which made no sense.

Upon looking further i noticed that the (Corsair CWCH100 Hydro Series H100) was leaking or had leaked.

Ive now removed the GPU. I was going to remove the cooler off of the CPU, not the fan system yet , just the housing over the CPU but when i loosened one of the screws i heard a gurgling as if it was releasing pressure, so because i was worried that it would flood the board i re-tightened it.

I would like to test the CPU/GPU and motherboard to see if their still working. I dont really at this stage want to buy a 2nd hand or new GPU in case other components are fried.

I have a laptop, are their any hardware components i could purchase to test all aspects of the system through the laptop?

Allso whats the best way of removing the cooling system that i believe may flood the board. Although to be honest i think it may have already leaked most of the fluid.

Thoughts on my el cheapo build to get back into PC Gaming

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 12:05 PM PST

Had a gaming pc which I sadly had to sell in September. Since then I've been itching to get another. Money's tight the now so looking to get a cheap build together to play some Witcher 3, WoW, OW, Modern Warfare, RDR2 and Cyberpunk when it comes out.

I added a (what I think is a) decent 144hz monitor so I can start upgrading parts as I go along. This build is to just get me gaming again. Also should note I need a Mobo with WiFi as we're renting and our modem is located in the living room and PC will be going in the Spare bedroom. Might be able to route wires around door frames but hate it looking messy.

Specs are below, Anything you would change? This build will need to last at least 5-6 months before I can start upgrading.

Should I update the BIOS for a new motherboard on a PC build?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 11:03 AM PST

Hi, I'm building my first PC this weekend, and I've been watching lots of youtube videos. I really like Paul's Hardware's videos. In his recent video of system setup, he says to flash the BIOS/UEFI to the most up to date version. I've read other things saying not to update the BIOS because you could brick your motherboard and it's unlikely that a BIOS update helped you.

My motherboard has updates on the BIOS that describe OC memory improvements, bootup speed improvements, and device compatibility improvements. It also says it updated "AMD ComboPI1.0.0.3abba " which googling says improves clock speeds to their rated levels. I am using fairly standard components (Ryzen 5 3600, MSI Ventus OC 2070 Super) and plan on OCing memory (with the A-XMP setting) to their rated speed (3200) and not over. Is it worth it to update the BIOS for me?

    5700 XT vs 2070S

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 02:07 AM PST

so I'm planning a build with a R5 3600, 16gb ram and either a 570p XT Nitro+ or 2070S. I am using an MSI 1440p 165hz curved HDR monitor. I have seen lots of benchmarks on YouTube which show that the 5700 XT seems to perform better than the 2070 Super in a lot of tests. I am really leaning towards this card especially since it is about $150 AUD cheaper and seems to perform better in games which is all I would be using it for, both flat and VR. Only thing concerning me is the driver issues that people are talking about. just need help deciding which card for my needs (1440p, high frame rate, VR also). thanks!

Would love some help picking out a new monitor for PC - specifically for gaming.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 11:41 AM PST

I won't even go into the specs of the monitor that I'm currently using because it's not even worth mentioning - was purely a stand-in whilst getting some more money together.

The specs of the gaming PC include; - i7-9700k on a Z390 board - RTX 2070 super - 16GB RAM

My current plan was to get a monitor that is 1440p, 144hz and probably an IPS, with G-sync either fully integrated or freesync that supports it. This left me with a few ideas based on my budget which is around £600 max.

Either the ASUS TUF VG27AQ or LG 27GL850-B

However, I'm here mostly to either confirm one as a better choice over the other or listen to any suggestions on other monitor choices! Cheers in advance.

    1070 vs 1070Ti vs 1080 money:value ?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 01:50 PM PST

I've chosen everything for my gaming PC except the GPU and these are my options:

    • GTX 1070 Founders Edition - 230€
    • MSI GTX 1070 Ti Aero - 275€
    • MSI GTX 1080 Aero - 300€

The cards would be bought used so I might get the price down a bit. I need the best price:performance card, not the best performing one.

Example: if there isn't a huge difference between the 1070Ti and 1070, I'll choose the 1070. If the 1070Ti is much better, then I'll choose the 1070Ti

    Purpose of the card:

I want to use the Graphics card for AAA gaming on a 1080P @144Hz monitor. My main games would be Metro 2033, Exodus, Fallout 4, 3, NV. My goal is to achieve 144FPS in these games at the highest/second highest settings possible.

    Build:

    • CPU: Intel Core I7-9700
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4-2666
    • OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit Build 9600

Is a 5700xt over gtx 1660 super worth it for 1080p?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 01:27 PM PST

I have BNIB gtx 1660 super and I am having second thoughts if I should open it or return it and get a rx 5700xt. I am aiming for 1080p 60fps ultra/high settings on open world games (some multiplayer). Would a 5700xt be overkill? I am having second thoughts about opening the card because I want the best value and the 5700xt seems like the better option because I won't have to upgrade for sometime. Is there a reason not to get the rx 5700xt? Thanks!

EDIT: I plugged the fans and waterpump into system fan headers, so the CPU fan header is empty. Is this a problem?

HP EX950 1TB read speeds slower than advertised

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 07:15 AM PST

    Hi all,

I recently installed an HP EX950 1TB NVMe drive in my system and the tests look good except for for the "Seq Q32T1" portion in CrystalDiskMark. Obviously slow is relative here, but it should be reading closer to 3500MB/s.

    Here are my specs:

    i7 7700k@5GHz

    Asus Z270E Gaming Mobo

    32GB Corsair LPX DDR4@3000MHz

    GTX 1080ti

HP EX950 1TB NVMe (drive in question), installed in the M.2_1 slot

    WD Black 1.5TB

    WD White (shucked) 8TB

I should clarify that I cloned this drive from my original SSD rather than a fresh install.

Here are some screenshots (let me know if you need more):

    https://i.imgur.com/mjgRjrG.png

    https://i.imgur.com/Q413DWu.png

Running the bench in safe mode with networking gave me an extra 200MB/s or so, right around 3000MB/s.

I also checked to make sure the drive is aligned properly and it appears that it is:

    https://i.imgur.com/GKnudfy.png

I was curious if there are any settings I might have overlooked that I should change, or if this is simply the result of cloning my boot drive as opposed to a fresh install.

    Thanks!

    EDIT: more info on pc

Need suggestions for high-end gaming PC

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 10:47 AM PST

Finally decided to retire my 8 old PC (seems like it is the season for that =)). My old hardware with GTX 660 & i7-930 & 12GB DDR3 has been a very good investment for me and I want something similar in terms of price/performance efficiency. I got some ideas from /r/buildapcforme to come up with the below build but I am interested in any suggestions you might have. I want the new build to run 2020 games with maximum graphics (specifically Cyberpunk 2077) and allow me to test some 2020 VR games as well. Afterwards I will go back to my favorite indie/nostalgia games for the next 5+ years with the same machine. Currently I am using TV/couch for gaming, but might switch to a monitor/desk setup eventually for more serious Starcraft 2.

I already have a Corsair HX850W Power Supply from 2011. My current case is a Corsair Midtower 100R (4 years old, couldn't find the exact model on web). I plan to reuse these unless suggested otherwise.

My questions: - Any part suggestions, specifically for the motherboard? I am a complete newbie when it comes to picking a MB. - Will I need any additional cooling with this setup? Silence of the system is important for me as well. - Will I be able to upgrade this system with additional 32GB of RAM down the line? - I currently have a Razer Turret for mouse/keyboard, but want to replace it due to hardware issues I started having. Any suggestion for couch gaming? The new Razer Turret seem to be for XBOX only. - I am open to getting a new case if cooling/fitting might be an issue. Where should I buy one, Amazon seems to be extra expensive for cases. I am used to just going to Fry's to get my case (live in CA) but they don't have any options lately.

    New Gaming PC Freezing

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 12:56 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

Whenever my PC is under some kind of load it freezes. It has has happened when I have tried to run games, open multiple applications at once, and when I have had discord open while gaming as well. I have done my best to ensure that all my drivers have been up to date. I also made sure that my wiring was properly done as well. Whenever the PC freezes, the fan also gets loud as well (pretty sure its the case fan and not my coolermaster one).

Recently, the case fan is always loud. Before, it would only get loud if I ran games but now its just all the time regardless of what I'm doing. I would greatly appreciate any help I could get from this community. Thank you very much.

    MY SPECS:

    PROCESSOR => AMD RYZEN 5 2600X

    MOBO => ASROCK B450M PRO4

GRAPHICS => GIGABYTE GEFORCE 1660 OC

    FAN: COOLERMASTER HYPER 212 EVO

    STORAGE => SAMSUNG EVO 860 - 500GB

    RAM => CORSAIR VENGEANCE 16GB

    Corsair spec delta - 5300/-

    Antec 550W - 2466/-

    Aoc 23.6 inch curved 1080p 60hz - 8900/-

    Total - 77-79k INR

I am still willing to get a 144hz monitor by cost cutting on the motherboard.

Edit - I'm updating post with options i got from further research using the knowledge provided by fellow helpers.

Also a question, The ryzen 5 3500 is available for just 9,800 INR, which is a huge difference from the 3600, though the performance difference is not so much. I was wondering if i could go for 3500 instead if it won't bottleneck?

    PSU rating

Is it a good idea to choose a PSU much larger than the power your system requires? For example I'm going for a Ryzen 5 3600 and RX 5700 build, on PC parts picker it recommends a 550W PSU, I'm instead going to buy a 750W one, will this cause any issues?

Edit: Wow, the amount of help I've received from this post is truly impeccable. Thank you all, y'all are a great community.
