I just wanna say I totally regret building my first gaming computer.

I can't stop buying things for it now. Holy shit. Like I went with a budget power supply because I didn't need anything fancy, but the yellow and black cables don't match my case so now I need to get black and white extension cables. But if I do that then I need to get some LED fans so you can see the cable colors. Oh crap if I get LED fans you'll be able to see the blue SATA cable hooked up to my SSD, time to get some black cables. Crap, my SSDs have their logo facing out and they don't match, time to get an SSD case for them. Well now I have LED fans but my CPU fan isn't LED, well I can't have that, gotta get rid of that now too.

Good lord. I shouldn't have ever gone down this rabbit hole of love.

Edit: wow some of y'all are assholes and can't stand a little sarcastic humor. I'm not OCD and freaking out about my computer. I play at 1080p 60hz, and I get perfect frame rates and resolutions on all the games I want to play. I just didn't know how much I would not only enjoy building a computer but how much I wanted to work on it aesthetically as well as performance.

Ah the joy you get when your upgraded PC boots on first attempt!

In the last ~10 years, we've lost TigerDirect, SuperBiiz, Fry's, and CircuitCity. What's left besides Amazon, Newegg, and OutletPC?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 06:02 AM PST

This is obviously a USA-centric post (apologies to my non-US PC builders). I've noticed that, over time, we're losing more and more options for PC components. Although I certainly shopped at Amazon and Newegg as well, I would try to use smaller retailers (SuperBiiz in particular) when a decent price would pop up for a component I wanted.

Besides Amazon, Newegg, and OutletPC, where can we buy PC components? Obviously Micro Center, but that is geographically limited. I know of literally no where else in the US besides Ebay/Craigslist.

Just curious if you know of any other retailers. I generally try to support smaller retailers (assuming similar/same pricing on a component I want to buy), so it'd be great to have a list of other options besides the big two of Amazon/Newegg.

I have a 3770k @ 4.5 on water. Is it time to max OC or just get an upgrade.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 11:31 AM PST

So I recently put together an AMD rig for my father and boy was I impressed, and due to the recent build I developed that upgrade itch. However I don't know if I want to just commit to an upgrade or try to squeeze a bit more performance out of my 3770K and wait for the next generation of CPUs to hit the market.

Now my 3770k can do 4.5 on water and doesn't really ever get above 60C average. However the temps on core 1 and core 3 differ by about 8-10C which makes me believe I would be a good candidate for delidding, and I figured I would just lap the IHS while were at it. I would still be subject to the silicon lottery and all that extra work might not even pay off if my CPU just can't handle that speed regardless of temps and voltage.

My computer as a whole feels fine on single player AAA games, and some modern games multiplayer games, but large map multiplayer games are a bit of a struggle on 1440p @ 144hz such as squad, hell let loose, pubg, and escape from tarkov to name a few. What would you do?

If I did do an upgrade I would most likely get:

    Ryzen 3600

    MSI b450 tomahawk max

    16 gigs DDR4 3600, maybe gskill ripjaws

Gaming Briefcase 19" 16:10 7KG (ACTUAL PORTABLE COMPUTER)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 12:02 PM PST

Gaming review & Build guide: https://youtu.be/7w8ZZNIQIFg

I used my spare streaming PC, summed: £500

    Mouse - Logitech G305 Lightspeed

    Keyboard - Redragon K552 RED

    Video Card - Palit GTX 1060 6GB

    CPU - Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz

    Memory - 2x8GB 1600MHz DDR3

    SSD - Kingston 240GB v300 2.5"

HDD - 5TB Green Western Digital

    PSU - CHEAP eBay Ace 850w (£29)

    Toolcase - Senator Black Aluminium/Wood

Disclaimer, Do Not Open up Power Supply Units, in my case I ensured everything was mounted down and well away from touching anything it shouldn't, my Toolcase has Foam coat all around it and mostly wooden interior, the capacitors are safe under the fan I had remounted.

FAQ, The Toolcase is about 6 - 8KG and has a shoulder strap, it runs on 1 plug and yes I have carried this around to college and a friends house. It's using a stock Intel cooler as it's a i5 4690 Quad Core, not even a K so the temperatures are reasonably low on demanding games.

Context, Our stupid college decided to give us a 2/3 hours of break in terms of Classes/Lectures and I decided to do this with my second/streaming PC. My main is a 180Hz 5GHz OC'd Gaming PC, I also decided I wanted to make this idea a Youtube Project, any Support is Appreciated.

I am about to graduate college and have been gaming on a 6-year-old Alienware 15 laptop. It has a gtx 980m, 16gb of RAM and an old i7 chip. My goal is an upgrade to this computer that can do most games at 144 Hz and AAA games at modest settings around 60. I also do some video editing on resolve and premiere. I don't envision myself editing professionally so I simply need a build that isn't frustrating to use.

Thank you so much in advance and sorry if I missed something obvious. I've been researching for weeks but this is still very new to me.

Weird horizontal lines on screen following first build

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 11:37 AM PST

I've just put together my first build and it ran okay for a while, I managed to install Windows, etc., but after some time the system started playing up. These are the symptoms:

    • 1px high lines started appearing all over my screen and they are a bit wavy -- photo here. The pixel in these lines seem to be white-ish noise-like colours and are affected by the activity on-screen. The problem persists over cold restarts and starts immediately in the BIOS splash screen. It 'fixed' itself for a brief while when I swapped to a different DisplayPort and on one reboot but soon returned.
    • In the windows device manager it has an explanation mark and a status saying 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)"
    • In the display settings the windows dialog is acting up, not recognising my monitor correctly and providing insensible resolution and refresh rate options -- photo here

    The parts are the following:

    • MSI Geforce RTX 2060 Ventus OC
    • Asus Gaming TUF x570-super
    • AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
    • 2x32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX
    • GigaByte AORUS 1TB
    • iiyama G2530HSU-B1 24.5
    • A novatech modular power supply 950watts

    I tried the following:

    • Move GPU to other PCIE splot -- problem persisted
    • Tried a different DisplayPort output -- problem initially went away but then came back to stay
    • Tried the HDMI output -- problem persisted
    • Tried a different monitor -- problem persisted
    • Drove the monitor from an alternative PC to see if that was the problem -- no problem there
    • Swapped the PCIE power cable and used an alternative output rail on my PSU for it -- problem persisted
    • Downgraded the NVIDIA driver from 441.87 (latest) to 441.41 -- problem persisted
    • Moved cables away from possible sources of noise

Things I still need to try:

    • Move PC further away from the monitor
    • Try a different GPU (I've got a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1650 I can try)

    Things I can't try:

    • Try the GPU in a different PC (I don't have another PSU that can drive this)
    • Try a different PSU

I guess my question to you guys is: What do you think is going on? Is my GPU borked? Can you think of other things I should try before returning the GPU?

Could I buy any SSD for OS?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 12:14 PM PST

Would the boot time be affected by more than 10-20 seconds?

144hz 1ms monitor Vs. RTX gfx

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 07:54 AM PST

Looking for some feedback, I have 2 options in front of me, I can either get a nice 144hz 1ms monitor or upgrade to 20 series cards....

Currently im running a 1060 6gb and a 60hz 5ms monitor.. I'd like to upgrade both, but dont have ther funds for both.

I've read that getting an RTX and pairing it with a 60hz monitor is basically throwing money away.. is it really that bad??

    Edit: specs of pc

    AMD Ryzen 7 2700x 16 GB Corsair Vengeance RGB 3x 500gb Samsung Evo 860? Evga GTX 1060 6b

    Interesting RAM errors

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 10:46 AM PST

    Hi r/buildapc!

I've been out of building PCs for a long while (7 years) because of university costs, but recently I had to upgrade because of hardware reaching it's end of life.

Upgrading now meant upgrading from DDR3 to DDR4, and I've been experiencing some interesting behaviour. Because I've not followed PC building and hardware closely for a while, I was wondering if somebody could double check the errors I'm getting and confirm or deny my conclusions.

    So the new build is:
    MOBO: Gigabyte X570 Gaming X
    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3200MHz 16-18-18-36

So I installed everything and ran benchmarks right away, and I encountered that my CPU and RAM were underperforming according to UserBenchmark. Some troubleshooting and asking a friend, learned that you have to enable XMP mode on the motherboard to get the 3200MHz speed. Don't believe that was a thing 7 years ago, or I've been running on underpowered RAM for a long time :)

Anyways, with that enabled, my PC started blue screening a lot, especially under heavy load. In researching the error codes, RAM came up as the suspect. I ran the following tests with Memtest86 bootable USB, all default configuration, 4 passes unless stated otherwise:

    1. XMP mode enabled, 2 sticks RAM in dual channel (287 errors)
    2. XMP mode disabled, 2 sticks RAM in dual channel (0 errors)
    3. XMP mode enabled, 2 sticks RAM in single channel (unknown number of errors, quit after 2 passes because errors were showing)
    4. Test with a friend's Crucial Ballistix Sport 3200 MHz 16-18-18-36 RAM. As far as I can see, all the same specs. XMP mode enabled, 2 sticks RAM in dual channel (4 passes, only tests that had errors in test 1, 0 errors)

After test 3 I started suspecting the motherboard's XMP profile, but after test 4 I was suspecting my RAM sticks were just bad sticks. I updated the BIOS anyways (because it was about 8 versions outdated) after these tests and ran test 1 again, same results.

Some more information about the exact errors in Memtest86: It was always a single half-byte experiencing a bit flip. For example the test would expect FFFFFFFF but got FFFF7FFF, which is the 8 bit flipping from on to off, if I'm not mistaken.

So I RMA'ed my RAM sticks at my vendor for two new identical ones, stating the errors I encountered. Those arrived today and I ran test 1 again, same results. Ran test 2 again, same results.

Is there a compatibility issue I'm not spotting? When selecting the parts for this build, according to UserBenchmark, this motherboard/RAM combination was the most popular one, so I didn't expect it to have this many problems for me. At this point I'm considering just refunding the RAM entirely and ordering the exact Crucial Ballistix that I tested from a friend.

Exhaust fan mounted outside the case

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 12:56 PM PST

Hey guys, just completed my core 500 build and couldn't be happier.

One thing I ran into was mt cpu cooler (big shuriken 3) taking up space for my rear fan. I opted for the two top fans to be 1 intake and 1 exhaust but felt like it this wouldn't work when my cpu (ryzen 5 3700x) was hitting 40c at idle.

I did some research and saw people putting tabs on the outside of their case and thought that was a great idea. I hooked up a noctua a12 and got it running.

How does this work in comparison to being inside the case? Curious to know, thanks!

    Should I upgrade my GPU/CPU/Both?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 12:42 PM PST

I'm currently running an i5-4460 and an RX 480. I have to turn down the settings for several games to medium-high to maintain around 60 FPS at 1080p. I only have 8 GB of DDR3 RAM since this computer was built in 2014 so if I upgrade my CPU I believe I would need to replace my motherboard and the RAM. My goal is to be able to play games at 60/+ FPS at 1080p on max settings. I'm not sure if my 4460 would bottleneck a high level GPU like an RX 5600 or RTX 2060. Edit: Changed the goal a bit

Have the 5500 XT 4GB memory buffer issues been solved?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 09:53 AM PST

I'm tempted to buy Sapphire Pulse RX 5500 XT 4 GB which is currently cheaper than the cheapest 1650S where I live. I think it's a good deal for this particular card. The only thing holding me back is the infamous memory buffer issues (certain games were unplayable on release day). So my question for anyone who owns that gpu is how is it performing? Have new drivers changed anything for better or worse since the release? Or is this issue hardware related and new drivers won't change a thing meaning that the card is effectively doomed... (Polaris cards are too power hungry for my build).
