    Simple Questions - December 23, 2019

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is the RX 5700 really worth $200 USD more in my country compared to GTX 1660 Super ?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:03 AM PST

Hi everyone, I am planning to build a PC in a few days and as the title says I was wondering if I should go for the GTX 1660 Super or the RX 5700 for 1080p 144hz gaming. The latter is a couple hundred more USD then the former, is it going to be worth the extra few hundred dollars in my country (NZ) or will the 1660 Super be absolutely fine for 1080p? (60 fps or above). Will be paired with Ryzen 5 3600 and 16gb of DDR4 3200 MHz ram, and I am buying the parts off of www.pbtech.co.nz if you would like to see the price difference.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

In memory of an old, hard to kill warrior

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 07:48 AM PST

Almost 9 years ago now, I built my PC, and even then it wasn't the greatest (I was using a onboard graphics card). During all this time, I have changed the PU, the cooler, bought a dedicated GPU and a 8gb ram stick after my 4gb old one broke. Now, it is a R7 370 4gb/i5 3330/8gb RAM that barely gets the work done on low.

Let me also say that PC parts in my country are crazy expensive (Brazil). Hence why I waited till I had some nice money to get a good, future proof PC.

Well, last week, I finally did it. Bought a RX 5700, Ryzen 5 3600, 320M motherboard, 8gb of ram (plus the 8gb I already had), a beautiful cabinet with led and shit, new keyboard, mouse and a second monitor. Everything I dreamed of.

Well, while I wait for the pieces to arrive, I'm was in the process of giving my old dirty bastard his last moments. Until he had enough. Motherboard fried earlier today, and despite my best efforts, it was declared dead at 11:35 AM. Deep down, I know he was just waiting for me to move on so he could move on to PC heaven. Rest in peace, brave warrior. You fought a long, tough fight (especially when I tried to play some unoptimized as fuck games, looking at you pubg) but in the end you did your job and that is all that matters. Goodbye, friend.

    Midlife Crisis Build

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 12:37 PM PST

As I'm a guy approaching his mid-life crisis that cannot afford, nor desire, a fancy new sports car to celebrate my midlife crisis I decided to pull the trigger on my first ever PC build.

    The Build

    https://imgur.com/gallery/YrNiLRP

    Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3k38Qq

    General Advice/Lessons Learned

    1. Give yourself a lot of time if this is your first build. I started this process more than six months prior to buying parts. They say Rome is not built in a day and neither will your first PC.
    2. Watch videos. Save the videos that are most important to you for future reference.
    3. Visit r/buildapc. Save the posts and comments you'll want to reference later.
    4. Build a 'to-do' or 'don't forget' list. I created a list in Google Keep and referenced it a lot.

    Overall

The build was overall relatively uneventful. I found out that building in the O11 Dynamic meant that the placement of the USB header on the bottom of the MOBO would be problematic. There wasn't room to plug in the front IO into the port without cutting into the space needed on the bottom for one of the fans. A low profile USB 3.0 20-Pin Internal Header MF Extension Cable fixed that issue.

I also didn't pay attention to the placement of one of the fan headers on the board. It's almost smack dab in the middle of the board which was more of a pain than I wanted to deal with for managing the cables. This meant having to get a fan hub, and I read that its recommended to have all the same type of fans plugging into the hub. As a result I had to give up the two Corsair magnetic bearing fans I had planned on putting on the bottom of the case, and in its place use the additional two DeepCool fans that came with the 5 pack. Probably for the better as I like the illumination those two fans bring to the case. Sucked though because I had already removed the stickers on the back of the two Corsair fans which means I couldn't return them.

The inclusion of the fan hub made space in the back of the case a bit tight. I removed the additional bay from the back which helped a little. I used the Velcro ties to the best of my ability, but in the end it's a really tight fit in the back of the case and a bit of a rats nest. Wish that had turned out better.

I was also thrown for a loop while installing the AIO cooler. After screwing the screws into the backplate I wasn't expecting the back plate to be loose. I though I did something wrong. But after thinking about it for a while I concluded, correctly, that screwing the AIO onto those screws would fix that situation which thankfully it did.

A compromise I had to make, if one wants to consider it one, was on the RAM. Ideally I'd like to have gotten ram with tighter timings, but, perhaps foolishly, put a premium on the unnecessary 36 gigs and pretty G.Skill sticks. I know its overkill as I don't do much more than gaming on it, but looks do matter to me. I wanted all four of those slots filled. Hey, at least it can run Chrome without problems.

It wasn't obvious, but there was plastic to peel on the inside of the window in addition to the outside. For about a week I was disappointed because I thought my glass was scratched up. I even cleaned the glass and didn't realize to days later it was plastic on the inside. SMH

Was able to OC the graphics card thanks to a video from Hardware Unboxed. Walked me through the process. While I was able to achieve a 3DMark score of 14,009 after games freezing after a little time I had to tone it down to where scores are around 13,629.

Temps are just fine on both the CPU and GPU.

RGB setup with Aura Sync was pretty easy although I had to do some scowering to figure out how to get the fans to white. The 'white' that DeepCool has is more of a light blue. Thankfully was able to find on the web what combination of settings to use to get a true white color.

Although not listed in the parts list I got a new mouse as my old one was dying. Because numbered side buttons are a must I decided to go with the Corsair Scimitar Pro. My previous mouse was a Razar, and while very good, I liked the options to move the side number buttons and their different textures. Features I think Razar should incorporate into their own products. My personal taste.

With that came the crappy ICue software. This initially conflicted with the Aura Sync. All I wanted to do was get my mouse off the vomit inducing default rainbow to a white color to match the PC, but it made all my PC lights turn off. A couple of weeks later I reinstalled iCue and it just defaulted to white eithout causing an issue. No idea how it fixed itself, but happy it did.

Also not in the parts list, but much of the reason I got the 2080TI was I purchased the then unreleased Nixeus EDG 34" as a preorder. The specs meet my needs, and reviews of other Nixeus products were solid, so took the plunge. Glad I did as it got me a $100 discount for putting in the pre-order. I have reviewed the product on NewEgg, but for some reason my review and all the others are gone. Still shows 5 reviews which is correct, but can't read any of them. Not sure what is going on there.

Keyboard is the Logitech MX Keys Advanced Wireless Illuminated Keyboard. Preivously had a keyboard with Cherry MX keys, but turns out I'm not as much of a clickity clack keyboard sort of person I thought I was. Love this thing and the low profile that comes with it.

I took my time with the build. Took about a week. Partially because UPS decided they would have more fun holding onto my RAM than fulfilling the two day shipping I paid extra for.

    THANK YOU!!!

I want to thank the following for helping me during this endeavor.

r/buildapc : You guys were great. The few times I had a question, members of the community pointed me in the right direction. Visiting the sub for the past six months also gave me lots of posts to save and things to think about.

r/buildapcsales : Not sure if Christmas is the best time of the year to buy parts, but /buildapcsales helped me find some deals I otherwise wouldn't have found. I got deals on my cooler, CPU, and storage that I otherwise wouldn't have come across.

PCPartPicker: This website is a must. Helped me find some good deals, and keep track of my planned purchases.

whats a good mobo to pair with the ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 08:10 AM PST

I am too anxious to build my PC. I have had all of my parts for a while, but I am too intimidated by the process.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 09:08 AM PST

Over a year ago I went wild on PC research and bought parts. Everything arrived safely, and I thought I would build immediately. I didn't, and still haven't. I have tried reading guides. I have tried watching build video series. Almost all of them end up moving too fast, don't show enough of the actual process, or gloss over sections that I want to be certain about to avoid a disaster. I don't know anybody who can build and I can't really pay somebody right now. I want to do this myself so I can gain experience.

Is there someone here who could be kind enough to give me a layman-friendly, step by step numbered guide perhaps with pictures or video to compliment each step? If I have an easy to follow guide in front of me, I believe I can tackle this and get my PC built before 2020. I have already waited too long with my parts and each day I can almost feel them degrading, all of that money being wasted.

I suppose what I want most is a simple steps list accompanied by a diagram for where each part goes, like Legos. Another thing that confuses me is that each part has its own screws, but the motherboard includes also includes screws for those parts. And of course...static. I have one of those wristbands, and it has like a needle nose plier on the end, where should I attach that?

All of my parts are compatible, but I can list them. The case is a Define S, Strix 1080 TI, Noctua NH-D15 cooler, 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000 Mhz RAM.

Thanks, I hope with the help of this community I can finally build my PC.

GPU usage drops from 100% to 10% and stays there causing games to run at 4fps

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:12 AM PST

GPU: ASUS Dual GTX 1070 8gb

So far I've tried on 2 games, Star Wars Fallen Order and CSGO and it happened on both. It doesn't happen as soon as I launch or all the time.

I have an undervolt on the GPU that I've had for about a year now so I doubt thats the issue but just in case its important. I did try switching profiles to one without the undervolt and it didn't fix it.

Also, I've been hearing beeps in my headphones whenever it happens, particularly when I open or close an application.

Link to GPU stats and frame counter

Edit: its back to working normal again. But this has happened before so I expect it to happen again.

    1660S, 2060, or 5700 if I will only be gaming in 1080p?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 11:49 AM PST

I am having a lot of trouble picking a gpu for my build. I originally was just going to go with a 1660S as it can run almost anything in 1080p at high settings and its the cheapest of the 3, but a lot of redditors in this sub have recommended me the 2060 or 5700. My question is, are these gpu's overkill for gaming in 1080p? Are they worth the extra money? Also, I really wanted to go with something from the MSI gaming x/z series as I really like the design of those cards and they are very highly rated but they dont have a 5700 for that series. Current build below.

If I am just replacing RAM sticks, can I just take the old ones out and put new ones in?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 12:46 PM PST

Hello! I just got new RAM today, and I'm not exactly sure if there's anything removed like having to wipe drivers for a graphics card change.

Can i just shut the PC off, and replace the sticks and have everything working? Thanks!

What CPU to pair with my GTX 1080

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 12:17 PM PST

Hi, I've built my first gaming PC a few years ago and updated parts of ever since. Currently I have an Intel Core i7 4790(non k) and some cheap DDR3 memory paired with a GTX 1080. I recently noticed lags in GTA V and even Overwatch on low settings with FPS drops under 150 when many players are around (Btw I'm playing on a 1440p 144Hz monitor).

Compared to videos and other articles about the 1080 I should receive higher framerates with it, so I think the processor may be the bottleneck here.

Which processor/RAM/mainboard can you recommend me to upgrade my setup? Would be nice if I could use my Dark Rock 3 with it.

    Full specs:

    CPU: i7 4790 | GPU: Palit GTX 1080 Super Jetstream @2Ghz | MB: z97m-d3h | Monitor: Dell s2716dg | RAM: no idea, cheap 1600Mhz RAM | CPU-Cooler: BeQuiet! Dark Rock 3 | Case: InWin 303 | PSU: BeQuiet PurePower 11 600w | Cooling: 6x Silent Wings 3 120mm

    Ryzen 5 3600x or 7 2700x??

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST

I would love to know your opinion. I'm planning to get either Ryzen 7 2700x or Ryzen 5 3600x since Boxing Day is around the corner. Only difference is 3600x is $50 more from $199. I won't be editing or streaming just gaming/casual use. What would be better? Also, sitting with 1060 3gb for now til I upgrade to better GPU and 1080p 144hz monitor.

I recently built a pc with an r7 3800x and am still using the stock wraith prism cooler. I currently have a slight over clock on it but I'm looking for deals on coolers for Christmas and Boxing Day. I'm currently leaning towards the noctua lineup but don't know what I should get.

First PC Build - A question about air flow...

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 11:22 AM PST

First, let me give the build run down:

    1) CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600

    2) Motherboard - MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX (ATX)

    3) Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz

    4) AMD Radeon Rx 5700 8GB

    5) Samsung 970 EVO SSD 500Gb (M.2 NVMe)

    6) Corsair RM750x PSU (750W & 80+ gold certified)

    7) Phanteks P300 Eclipse Case (mid-size tower)

I will be running Windows 10 Pro and I also bought four fans (Noctura redux 1200RPM) to help with temp management.

It appears that the case/motherboard will allow for me to run 4 system fans. My question is, are there any general guidelines when it comes to fan placement that might serve as a starting point for me when installing the four fans?

For example - there is an advertising video for the case I bought that gives a demonstration on how the four fans can work in conjunction to keep the internals cool - https://youtu.be/t4fPB7iXGzE?t=54 (the link to the left should take you to the exact moment they demonstrate the airflow on the video).

In the example they seem to have the two fans at the front panel of the case pulling air in and the one fan at the rear and the one fan up top, exhausting air out. Does that layout and intake/exhaust method work well? Are there other helpful layouts that might serve my initial build better than this (as a starting point)?

I'm guessing that air flow changes from build to build (case to case) - but I was wondering if there are any general setup guidelines that are useful when starting a new build?

    Thanks. And happy holidays.

Do I need a PSU as powerful as my GPU suggests/requires?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:23 PM PST

So, I just bought a Sapphire Pulse Vega 56. However, I only just realized that I have a 600w psu, and it suggests a 700w PSU.

I'm mostly curious if my current PSU will work, that way I don't need to buy a new one or have an unnecessary part floating around.

Edit: I was wrong, I have a 550w PSU. Whoops.

New PC - No Boot - 4 Clicks

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:51 AM PST

    Hi,

Just built a new pc and it will not boot. I press the power button and I hear 4 clicks (kind of sounds like on, off, on, off). Pretty sure it's coming from the PSU. The memory and gpu get lights but nothing else happens. If I press the power button a second time nothing happens at all. Those clicks only happen when first switching on the power.

I reset the cmos. I unplugged the GPU. I tried the original cables and custom cables for the GPU. I put in the 8 pin and 4 pin CPU connectors and just the 8 pin. I rechecked and reseated all cables like 5 times.

I have the 3900X, Gigabyte Aorus Pro Wifi x570 mobo, 3600mhz g.skill 64gb ram, two Corsair nvme m.2 drives, HX1000 Corsair psu, kraken X62 cup cooler and the define R6 case. The only thing old is my 1080Ti GPU.

Seems like a safety feature keeping the PSU from providing power but I don't know. I haven't tried the safety pin test because one, i don't like doing that I feel I'll do it wrong and two why is my ram and gpu lighting up if it's the PSU¿

Help, any ideas or suggestions please.

Old PC build getting new life, novice needs experienced opinions

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 09:02 AM PST

    Hey folks.

This is my 2nd post here. My good friend gave me his old PC build a month ago, and it's pretty dated. He gave me a Christmas gift 2 days ago. A Ryzen 7 3700x and a Corsair H60 cooler! He's super generous, lol.

This processor will not work with the Asus Crosshair IV Formula mobo currently in the old PC build of his that I have. So I ordered a new motherboard, and a new case while I was at it. The build currently runs an MSI Radeon RX580 8gb GPU.

I will link a pcpartpicker build list here, of what the build will look like post-upgrades, but I want to note that the RAM, the HDD, and the PSU are approximations of the components I will be bringing over from the old build. I could not find the exact models on pcpartpicker. Probably because these items are at least 5-6 years old or more 😅

I will say that the RAM is 2x4gb of Patriot "Sector 5" DDR3-1333. Model no. PGV38G1333ELK. I feel like this is the next thing I should be upgrading.

I'm sharing here, mostly in search of opinions. I have had issues with the current build crashing during gaming. I have really only played a little bit of CS:S, Star Wars: Empire at War, and Rome: Total War. The crashing of the current system has kind of kept me from really being able to sit down and enjoy the games for long.

Here's the plans for the upgraded build. Thanks for reading!

    Wait until after christmas?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:35 AM PST

I'm about to place the order for my first build but am now wondering if I should wait. I am new to the community and I do not know if this stuff usually goes on sale after christmas. What do you guys think?

How do i plug this in?

I got a Gamemax graphite case for my pc and it has a fan hub on the back. The 2 included fans are 6pin connecters and they're plugged into a fan hub on the back. There's 2 cables coming off the fan hub. One of them is a Molex? I think it goes to the psu and I'm not sure about the other. This is a picture

    This is the case https://www.box.co.uk/GRAPHITE-Game-Max-Graphite-RGB-Windowed-Mid-Tower_2335931.html

I've looked online, and found that they're 6pin because it's quite a budget case.

    Anyone using a Tomahawk Max B450 with G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4 3200 since it's not on B450's qvl?

Some people say that it should work fine but others say it causes crashes or the ram doesn't run at the intended frequency. Can anyone give me any validation on any of this info?
