    Simple Questions - December 21, 2019

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is more than 16gb ram needed for a pure gaming rig or is it a waste?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:52 AM PST

Is there any reason to go more than 16gb for pure gaming?

FML - My CPU was hitting 100C in stress tests. Turns out that I left the plastic sticker on the CPU cooler Interface.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2019 04:10 PM PST

Don't be like me and make sure that you actually remove the protective sticker from the cooler and/or CPU. Ironically, when I was trying to diagnose why my computer was running so hot, I read a post where someone said to make sure you remove the sticker and I thought to myself that there was no way that I did that... /facepalm

rest in peace first PC build from 2002

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 12:46 PM PST

finally replaced my first PC build with a tiny fanless machine that probably uses like 1/10 the power[1].

kind of sad to unplug. not sure what to do with it. it's soo soo SOOO old. lol. fans were SO loud.

(got me through college. played some TF2 on it in 2006-2009. used it for streaming for a little while... but then it couldn't even handle streaming lol. massive hitching even when using wired connection with 50mbps.)

<joke>behold the glory of Pentium 4 NETBURST with AGP graphics. and 32 bits of amazing-ness. that's TWICE as many as old 16 bit machines. twice the GLORY.</joke>

here's some pics of the old machine:

    [1] https://www.amazon.com/MintBox-Mini-2-MBM2-Pro/dp/B07DW6W831/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

for those wondering, why do you still have a running machine that is that old?

    • it was being used as a home router/gateway (filters packets for porn, bittorrent, does captive portal, firewall, etc, etc)
    • it was running Untangle. a Linux debian 9.0 based distro.
    • it is free for home use. super easy to use.

for funsies here is the current parts:

Thanks for the Help. Ryzen 7 2700X Build Complete.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 10:58 AM PST

I finished my build. I ended up going over budget on my tower a little, but with the sales I was able to get I was good with that. There were a lot of recommendations for the B450 Tomahawk, but I ended up going with the MSI B450 Pro Gaming Carbon AC.

I did end up having to buy a new monitor at this time as well. I had originally planned on using an old monitor while I researched and saved up for a new one, but I was having display issues during my build and I couldn't rule out my old monitor with a VGA to HDMI adapter.

I did run into the dreaded everything powers on, but no display. Trying the onboard did not work. Thanks to some of the guides on here in the end I ended up having to flash the BIOS using the Flashback method.

Thanks for all the help and here it is: My New Computer

    A few motherboard questions

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 05:19 AM PST

Going to build a rig in a few days, however I'm still confused as to wether it would it be better to buy this motherboard alongside this wifi adapter or instead just buy this motherboard with wifi already built into the motherboard, option b is a bit more expensive but if it's worth it I wouldn't mind spending that much more. Will be paired with Ryzen 5 3600 and 16gb 3200 MHz ram. Also would both of these motherboards fit into the CoolerMaster Masterbox MB520?

    Any help is appreciated, thanks

Will water vapor damage a PC over time?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 11:44 AM PST

I have a bathroom connected to my room, and therefore my PC is relatively close to my shower. There is lots of visible steam while I am showering and I was wondering whether this could affect my PC over time.

Would a insufficient power supply cause blue screening?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 08:32 AM PST

Hello, I recently helped upgrade a friends PC, (not my first time) and he is experiencing a good amount of random blue screens basically doing anything. I never even thought to ask what PSU he had when helping him upgrade other things, but its a 500W and he has a 2060 SC, i5 9600k in turbo at 4.3ghz, 32gb ram in 4 sticks, an Elgato capture card, 1 HDD, 1 SSD, 1 M.2, CD try, and the case fans.

My initial thought is that 500W is too low and may be causing all of his BSOD's?

My sister needs a new GPU for her pc do you guys know what the best value GPU for 300 cad or 220 usd?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:51 AM PST

I was thinking maybe the rx 580. Its cheap it works very well and it preforms a little worse then the 1660 super but the 1660 super is like 300 cad but the rx 580 is like 250... Idk lol im just trying to get some other opinions. Oh and buying used isnt an option. If it was an option i would just pickup a vega 56 but she isnt comfortable with that.

    Not sure about CPU temps

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 08:29 AM PST

So I'm running a 3700x cooled by an nzxt Kraken x62, and am idling temps of 40-50°C. Is this ok? I literally just built this PC, kind of bricking it right now.

Building a Photo editing PC for a friend (I'm a gamer)

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 11:16 AM PST

Hey guys, I have built probably 10+ PC's over the years but every time its just a maxed out gaming rig for me. I have a realtor buddy that wants a desktop built and it's main purpose is photo editing in Lightroom.

From my research the Ryzen 7 or 9 series looks like the go to here. Is 9 series completely over kill for photo editing?

Other than that my only other question is does the GPU matter at all? What would you recommend for GPU here?

Very little room between graphics card and PC case. How to increase cooling?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 01:52 PM PST

Got galax 2060 super it has decent cooling but is a bit large for my case leaving little room for cooling with the side panel on.

My case is Thermaltake h18 micro atx. I touched the side panel window and was hot .

I already have 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans installed.

    Want advice on friend's pc

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 08:53 AM PST

So my friend bought a prebuilt about a year ago. It has a fx 6300, 8gb ram, and an rx 560. He wants to upgrade it for christmas and doesn't know what he should upgrade. I recommended him to get 16gb of ram and a new cpu like the ryzen 5 2600 and a motherboard. Then he can buy a gpu and new power supply after. Is this the right move? He plays games like fortnite(I know ew), minecraft, and modern warfare.
