This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Regrets after building PC

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:49 PM PST

(Solved) So I recently finished My build, the final amount including everthing, came out to $1,258. I was originally very happy with it until I showed my friends. Some of the laughed at me and said that my cpu was ass and my gpu wouldn't work with it and that I should've gotten a better gpu.

They also said that I payed way to much for it.

(Mainly beacause I built mine and parts don't really go $200 off)

one of them got away with only paying 700 for a Ryzen 7 2700 (which he claims is better) and an RTX 2060 in a pre-built bundle. The reason it was so cheap was because it was $200 of on black friday. He also didn't have to pay for anything else, do research, or buy win10 because his dad Is REALLY into PCs.

Another one payed only $800 for an i7 processor and a gpu that is the same as mine, in a prebuilt. He also did not have to pay for anything else because it came bundled with a 4k moniter with included keyboard and mouse (Same deal with dad aswell).

The worst part of this all is that on several occasions I asked them to help me with research as I knew nothing, yet they would never help me. And now that mine is finished they claimed that they didn't help me because they thought I was joking (thought they would've understood after the 14th time, but ok).

TL:DR I really just want someone to tell me that I didn't throw my money away and the stuff I have is fine.

I would also like to know if others had this problem.

Edit: The moniter was on sale for $100 and the Gpu was originally $240. Also I bought the official windows key for $136.

Edit: Thank you guys for all the help, I couldn't be more grateful! I already have a second stick of RAM on the way and plan on getting a new GPU and PSU next year. I totally regained confidence in my build, and am glad I did after the 3 weeks I spent researching it. I did sound a little spiteful towards friends, they're not usually that bad, but at least now I have something to hold up and say that it's mine. 😀😁

1080p 144hz Freesync Budget Monitor Suggestions

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:53 AM PST

So I made the dive and purchased all parts necessary to build a PC and I forgot about the need for a nicer monitor to actually use the Gigabyte 5700 xt gaming OC I put into it. I'm looking for a 144hz 1080p Freesync Monitor at around the $150-$200 range. I know that this is on the extreme low end of quality monitors, but just want something to get myself started while I save up for a nicer, potentially 1440p one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Saying Goodby to my i5 2500K? Is This the Right Upgrade Direction?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 11:05 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly gaming, but also science (some waveform analysis, manuscript writing, poster making, and running poor written statistical code in R and making bad inferences from the results).

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080 is fine for now but i would like to move up someday soon. 60 FPS for now too at high settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Replace this text with your answer.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    ~ 500

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Upgrading from a i5 2500k. Stock cooler on the processor, and an old but super reliable PSU. Video card from a friend.

Mostly looking for some advice, as it has been a while. I was on the fence about updating a bit, however low cost of RAM/CPU motivating me to update 7 year old build.

The 3600X is only $10 more (no microcenter nearby). Is the cooling situation here satisfactory or should I upgrade first vs redoing later.

The MoBo seems highly recommended and i went with the Pro Carbon because $30 for built in wifi/bt in a pinch is nice (and RGB I guess?)

Hopefully my PSU will have the right connections, currently runs ok.

Not the exact GPU I have but i know it is some variant of the EVGA GTX 970 w/ 4gb vRAM.

I have a 250gb ssd and terabyte HDD, but could maybe be convinced to upgrade these if needed/down the line.

I've ordered all the parts, how do I prepare now?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:01 AM PST

All the parts have been shipped.

    It's a 5700 xt red devil with a ryzen 5 3600 on a b450 msi tomahawk max in a phanteks p400a digital case.

How can I prepare? I've watched a couple of build guides but that's that. I have a friend that has build multiple PC's who's gonna help me so I'm not too worried.

A good chair for sitting all day long

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:21 AM PST

    Hello,

Can you please recommend me some good quality chair? I am working pretty long hours daily and my back and joints are starting to ache.

I was looking at some quality chairs and other recommendations here on Reddit but I currently can´t afford a chair in a range of 600-1000€. I started my own business a few months back and as it´s growing, I am funneling 90% of what I make each month to it. Maybe I can afford to buy a Herman Miller in a year or so, but not now.

I live in Slovakia and I can´t buy a used or refurbished model here. I checked local office clearings and they all have some low-quality chairs. The number of chairs and furniture sellers in my country is limited as well and most of them sell cheap stuff from Poland.

    - I need something that I can order and it will be delivered to Slovakia with a reasonable delivery price
    - I need a chair with a price tag no higher than 300-400€

I am 25 years old guy, 75kg weight, 173cm height

    Thank you

Power outage killed my 2 day old PC. Question about Surge protectors

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:12 PM PST

So my power goes out frequently in my room (multiple times a week) due to problem I'm in the process of fixing. It doesn't go out to due thunderstorms or a neighborhood problem. It's specifically me and my brother's room. Sadly last week this caused my pc's (which I had for 2 days) psu to die.

Will a surge protector protect my new psu from these frequent power outages? Or is this problem bigger than a surge protector?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. Built this PC a little over 2 years ago and have had no issues until it stopped booting a few days ago. Pressing the power button does nothing, no beeps, no POST, not anything. USB devices are still getting power since the keyboard lights up when plugged in, but no power lights or anything on the MB as far as I can tell.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

First tried flushing the power and then resetting the CMOS. Tried booting with all external devices removed. I then did the usual troubleshooting of removing parts one by one. Tried booting with just powersupply, motherboard, CPU and 1 stick of RAM and still nothing.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm pretty sure the issue involves either the powersupply, CPU, or MB, but I'm not sure how to isolate which one is the problem.

Monitor Recommendations for Very Bad Vision

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:41 AM PST

Hi, If this is not the correct subreddit, my apologies...

I have a lot of visual problems and am on the pc all day for work. I am blind in 1 eye and vision in the other eye is poor. I have bifocals for everyday use and a special pair of PC glasses for computer work. Even with those, I struggle a lot.

For my work laptop, I hook it up to a 32 inch 1080p TV. I did this at first since it was big, but I realize that this isn't the best suited thing for a pc display. I am ready to look into a monitor and wanted to get some expert recommendations and real world feedback if anyone is in a similar situation or can add some info.

I want to find a monitor at least 32 inches diagonal but no bigger than about 36. I don't want anything that is wide and narrow like some of the gaming monitors I am seeing. I don't do any gaming, so that part isn't important. I just need something that clearly display text and windows like content as clearly as possible. I am hoping with new tech there are choices out there that can do this while reducing strain on the eyes.

My work laptop is a dell with an HDMI output. I work in health care IT and frequently work with Word, Excel and also configure software in a GUI type config tools. It is frequent that I will bring up 2 similar windows and compare differnt configurations between 2 environments. Most of my coworkers do this across 2 screens, but I need one big monitor and open the windows all on the same monitor.

I would like to stay under 500 US, but am open to any feedback and would consider more if it is groundbreaking tech or similar.

Thanks for all of your feedback and suggestions and happy holidays.

Fresh AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and mid range GPU build - suggestions please!

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:12 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking at replacing my aging build with something a bit more modern. I'd also be looking at replacing most of my current laptop use with this machine too, so would be using this machine for:

Photo editing (Lightroom and Photoshop), web browsing, light gaming (Cities Skylines, Minecraft, GTA V), software development and 3D modelling (Fusion 360) plus other things - so am looking for an all round machine. Probably running Linux for most of the time.

This is what I'm thinking of replacing these with:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor £169.98 @ Aria PC
    Motherboard ASRock B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard £76.46 @ More Computers
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory £52.98 @ Box Limited
Video Card XFX Radeon RX 590 8 GB FATBOY OC+ Video Card £159.97 @ Amazon UK
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total £459.39
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-12-18 20:08 GMT+0000

    (I have a 500W PSU/case/disks etc. already)

What do you think of this part list? Where could I improve? I think my hard budget limit is £500, but would like to come under that as much as possible - closer to £400... Please could you help me improve! Thank you! :)

These are the specs of my current machines:

    Desktop:

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz

    Memory Type DDR3

    Memory Size 8 GBytes

    Laptop:

    2.9 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

    16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3

Second monitor only turns on after "scan for hardware changes"

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:42 AM PST

I've been having this issue on and off for a few weeks since upgrading my PC.

When I startup my computer only my main monitor is detected, and my dual monitor wallpaper is squished to fit one display.

I've found that going into the Device Manager and scanning for hardware changes sorts this out 90% of the time.

Both monitors are the same make/model, resolution, and connected to my GPU with a display port.

Anyone experienced this and know of a fix?

4770k, GTX 1070 system: Better to upgrade GPU or CPU/RAM/MOBO for gaming?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:48 PM PST

I'm looking for a little more oomph for 1440p gaming. Looking to refresh with a $500 budget.

I'm currently running a 4770k at 4.4 GHz, GTX 1070 with a modest overclock, and 16GB DDR3 1866 RAM. It's probably the longest I've kept with a processor, but it's still a pretty good performer.

Would I get more benefit out of a GTX 2070 Super, or keeping the 1070 and getting a Ryzen 3600/DDR4 RAM (maybe with enough money left to swap my SSD for an NVMe drive)?

ETA: Examples of games I'm playing are Outer Worlds, Tomb Raider series, Witcher 3

Getting Constant, but Random, Black Screens of Death and I'm losing my mind.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:37 AM PST

Title gives the gist of it. My rig information is in this Pcpp link, with one exception which is that after an RMA of the GPU I am now running on an EVGA RTX 2080 FTW3.

The back story: Starting about three weeks ago my machine began black screening during gaming. Sometimes it would happen within a few seconds, other times it would happen after hours, but it was every night without question. It happens at idle as well as under load, with no consistency at all. Event viewer shows NOTHING happening when these crashes occur. When the crash happens my screen goes black, I hear the sound of a device disconnecting, GPU LEDs go dark, and the GPU fan goes to 100%. I can still hear friends through discord as well as any game sounds or other audio playing on the computer at the time of the crash. Both monitors go dark at the same time.

    What I have tried:

    • Uninstalling Corsair iCUE and NZXT CAM (as I heard they could be potential culprits)
    • Reinstalling GPU Driver
    • Removing all CPU and RAM over locks
    • Updating BIOS to latest version
    • Complete format and reinstall of Windows with installation of drivers and one game only for testing
    • Quadruple checking all power and device connections, swapping PSU GPU cables (2x8 pin) with the spares that came with it (both are single cables to individual ports on the PSU).
    • RMAing GPU TWICE. First replacement card was even worse, black screening upon reaching the login screen immediately. Second card worked well for two days, then began exhibiting similar behavior.
    • Crying

    What I have not tried:

    • PSU swap (new one from amazon arriving today to test this)
    • I literally don't know what else to try at this point.

Please reddit Tech friends, you're my only hope.

Weird buzzing high pitched sound coming from cpu area

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:12 PM PST

Hi People, I just build my first pc (9900kF, Aorus z390 master, kraken x62, evga g3)

I booted my system and it seemed fine, a small buzzing sound coming from the cpu area, installed Windows and the sound increased. when I move my mouse the sound keeps getting louder. Turned off my fans (it doesn't seem like coil whine to me but you never know) and the sound stayed, it is definitely coming from the cpu or cooler or mother board?

It seems like it getting worse after a few days, afraid to use the PC

attached vid with sound so you could hear it. What is this, why does it get louder when mouse moving?

Is it because of psu? Or combination?

    The high pitched sound buzzing

Thanks already, sry for bad English

    IO shield help

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:36 PM PST

Are the pieces that stick up on the IO shield suppose to be left like that. Or is it okay if I bend them out of the way ? I tried installing my motherboard and the motherboard barely misalign with the standoffs and I feel as if it's because of those IO shield pieces. Should I just apply more pressure to align the motherboard ?
