Being a father / building a mini itx PC in secret for Xmas

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:03 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

My son has been asking for a gaming PC, his very first one, months ago. I told him that he'll have to earn it by working hard at school, nothing's free right ? Well he did and got excellent results, way beyond my expectations !

Xmas 2019 is coming, so he asked for it again. Problem: I couldn't save enough money for him and told him to give me some time and maybe he will get it for his birthday on April 2020 :( Here in France, PC parts cost a kidney. He wasn't upset at all, he's a good kid and he knows that we get rewarded for our daily actions. We parents always do our best for our kids. I didn't want him to think that he worked hard in vain. So I sold my entire superheroes DC Comics collection figures ( sayonara Superman ) and got the money for him, he doesn't know this, that's our secret !

I was aiming for a mid end and future proof gaming PC, so that he won't be frustrated for the few upcoming years. Kids grow up fast, he's already 14 and time flies fast. Maybe he'll leave the house in 3 or 4 years to go to college. I remembered being broke as a student and I just wanted him to have a decent and yet upgradable PC, replacing one or two parts such as a GPU or CPU is easier than changing the whole PC , isn't it ?

So I got all the parts and built in secret a mini itx PC, again so that is easier to carry and store in a student dorm room. Some people only think as far as tomorrow, I think years ahead.

Building in that NZXT H210 case was very easy thanks to its size. I went on a pink and blue theme since those are his favorite colors.

    • I decided to go red with a Ryzen 3700x, since he's very interested in video editing and rendering and some other stuffs that might require a powerful CPU.
    • The Enermax Aquafusion 120 AIO cools down that beast and does a better job than the Prims cooler ( which was already decent ) that comes with the CPU.
    • Then a RX 5700 XT should be more than enough to play on a wide QHD monitor ( couldn't buy it yet, have to save money, he'll play on a TV temporary ). The Sapphire Nitro Plus version seems to be a good choice, good temps, silent and wow beautiful ! It fits really tight but it FITS :)
    • The Trident Z neo 3600 mhz RAM are here to let the Ryzen 3700x fully express itself.
    • For the OS i went on a SSD m.2 Corsair MP 510 500 gb, should be enough to handle Windows 10 and all his softwares.
    • Two SanDisk SSD Ultra 3 D 1tb and he has plenty of room for his games and other things that I don't want to know.
    • A SF 750 Watts power supply from Corsair to deliver some juice and help the GPU to breathe.
    • Added a few Enermax white case fans with beautiful RGB to highlight the components without going overkill.
    • With great power comes the Gigabyte Aorus x570i pro wifi that has great responsibility to support all these.
    • And to complete, a 5 inch screen to monitor the PC, yes he has to learn to keep an eye on the temps, CPU and GPU load, fan speed etc.

And here is Sans ( referring to one of his favorite game character from Undertale ) the Mini ITX PC in all its Glory.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/jmp2Vku

Christmas is coming in a few days, can't wait to offer him his dream PC. He has no idea what is waiting for him around the corner. I hadn't half the chance that he has now when I was a kid, keep working hard, keep being nice, caring about the others, sharing and helping and you'll be rewarded, if I can see this, hopefully somebody else one day will do too and again you'll get REWARDED and I promise: you won't have to hunt for happiness.

    Love you son.

    Daddy

Sending positive vibes to all the fathers and mothers out there and wishing the best to everyone for the end of the year and the new upcoming year.

I am allowed to solicit my family for one PC part of around $150-$200 because I bought Airpods for someone; what should I get?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:36 PM PST

If I ask for anything that exceeds around $200 they will think I am greedy.

    Current rig:

    • Ryzen 5 2600, cooled with a Hyper 212 EVO
    • Radeon RX 480 8GB
    • 16 GB DDR4-2400 (all four DIMM slots are occupied)
    • 256 GB M.2 NVMe SSD (half full)
    • 500 GB Solid State Hybrid Drive (half full)
    • 320 GB regular hard drive (empty)
    • ASUS B450-Prime AM4 motherboard
    • Sh*tty $30 Newegg sale case
    • Logitech G910 Romer-G keyboard
    • Unknown Logitech G mouse that glows
    • 550W non-modular EVGA power supply

Edit: I have decided to buy a new case and see how many Newegg gift cards I can get.

    Should I be worried?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 08:54 AM PST

Whenever I break my case open, turn everything off, and turn it back on the fans will go full blast. The fans turn off and it does this for 1 or 2 more times before it finally boots up, should I be nervous about that?

I built my best friend a computer for his Birthday/Christmas

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:04 AM PST

Hey everyone, I've been wanting to do this for a couple years, but this year I finally had enough extra money to do something really awesome. For my best friend's birthday (the 24th, sucks to be him lol) I built him his first computer.

He has been wanting to get into the world of pc gaming for a very long time, but could never afford it. I've known this for the entire 5 years we have been friends, and have always wanted to build him a gaming pc, but have never really been able to afford it (met him when I was 13, I'm 18 now.) Now fast forward a couple years, I have a job and some extra money and am feeling extra generous and am super super excited to see his reaction on his Christmas eve when he comes over for a few hours to hang out with my family and I can give it to him.

Now for the actual specs. I had a budget of about ~$500 for this build and made do with what I could.

    • Cpu: Ryzen 3 2200g
    • Cooler: Stock AMD Wraith
    • Mobo: Asusrock B450M-HDV R4.0
    • Ram: 16GB G.Skill Aegis 3000mhz
    • GPU: Powercolor Red Dragon rx 570 4gb
    • SSD: 120gb PNY CS900
    • HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 1tb 7200RPM
    • PSU: Thermaltake Smart 500W
    • Case: CoolerMaster MasterBox Q300L
    • Wifi: TP-Link T4E AC1200 Dual Band
    • Case Fans: Aigo DR12 RGB
    • https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MNcNzN

Now for the pictures, I tried my very hardest with cable management and think it turned out pretty damn well, I also took pictures of my building process. :)

    https://imgur.com/gallery/DEmAFkP

Finally for those curious, I downloaded League of Legends (easy to run) and PUBG (kind of hard to run but not crazy) to test out and see what kind of performance it gets and it got an average of about 180fps at max settings on League of Legends and 70fps at High settings on PUBG at 1080p

~$600 PC Build Specifically For Overwatch

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:11 AM PST

I have been lurking this board for a bit now, there are a LOT of impressive builds, some of which are works of art. My background with PC's and PC building is relevant up to around 2005, which is when I got my CompTIA A+ so, basically it's only somewhat relevant today. I have enough sense to know what is needed to build a functional PC and how to put it all together, I also know I have no experience with modern PC parts and am not fluent in the commonly avoided brands/models and the ones regarded as best bang for your buck, etc.

I only need a PC to run Overwatch, which I will list their minimum/recommended specs. I am looking to either buy a prebuilt or build my own PC that can at least run the game at medium graphic settings without hiccup & has potential for upgrades in the future. I may plan to stream my gameplay on a platform like Twitch, so considering that, can anybody give me a point in the right direction with key components, advice in general or link me to prebuilt systems that are under $600 in price? I don't want someone to do all of the work for me, but a bit of guidance from a guru would be well appreciated!

Thank you so much! Here are the specs of the game I would like to run:

    Overwatch: Minimum Requirements

    • CPU: Intel Core i3 or AMD Phenom X3 8650
    • RAM: 4GB RAM
    • HDD: 30GB Free Space
    • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 4850 / Intel HD Graphics 4400
    • OS: Windows 7, 8, or Windows 10 64-bit
    • Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768 minimum

    Overwatch: Recommended Requirements

    • CPU: Intel Core i5 or AMD Phenom II X3 or better
    • RAM: 6GB RAM
    • HDD: 30GB Free Space
    • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 / AMD Radeon HD 7950 or better
    • OS: Windows 7, 8, or Windows 10 64-bit
    • Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768 minimum

What graphics card to upgrade to?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:46 AM PST

I'm currently still using my GTX 760 and have been thinking about upgrading for a long time.

I have a $200-$250 budget ($300 if it's really a good deal) and I'm not averse to buying used.

I've been leaning toward a used GTX 1080 because I'm seeing them for sub-$250, but is there a better option?

    [Monitor] 1440p vs 1080p, Ryzen 5 3600/RTX 2070 Super

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:43 AM PST

    Hello,

I have upgraded my CPU and my motherboard about 2 months ago for a Ryzen 5 3600 and a B450 Gaming Pro AC. I just bought an MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X. I now have to buy a new monitor and I hesitate between a 1080p or 1440p monitor. I like to play at high settings and 1440p 144Hz seems hard to obtain on certain games (looking at benchmarks, not tested myself). I mostly play FPS games (Modern Warfare and BFV), but I like to play games like Witcher, Jedi Fallen Order, Cyberpunk(when it will release), etc. I was tending to buy a 1080p monitor since I can have a good one for ~300$ while for 1440p I have to pay at least 500$. I live in Canada, so price are higher here. So I just wanted a little input from you guys. Thanks a lot.

    First Build - Successful!

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:30 AM PST

I've been lurking in this sub for ~ a year and finally built my first pc last week! A year ago I had never even heard of an SSD, let alone thought I had the ability to build a computer. So thanks for the constant knowledge-sharing! Moving from a MacBook for the past several years, this is my first windows computer in the windows 10 era (so if anyone has any often overlooked OS tips let me know).

    Photos - PC photos

Specs - Ryzen 5 2600 Asrock B450 Steel Legend 2 x 8 GB Patriot Viper RAM @ 3200 MSI GTX 760 2 GB (only paid $15 and this will allow me to play until I can save for a nicer card) Seasonic 80+ Bronze 620 watt WD Blue M.2 NVME 500 GB NZXT H500

Maybe for my birthday in a few months I'll add some sleeved cable extensions or some extra fans in the front, but for now I could not be happier with this build. It booted up on the first try, thankfully, and the most difficult part for me was installing the I/O shield (the little bugger took me like 20 minutes and a few small cuts to my fingers).

(Sorry if formatting looks weird, as I'm on mobile on a train)

Hear me out...its complicated and i need some help with my pc and some issues with components or windows (possible virus)

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 02:16 PM PST

Hello, ive made a post regarding this before but not with as many details and ive got new speculations

The issue is with my personal build, i have a; Ryzen 5 2600 3.4ghz (hyper 212 rgb cooler) Corsair vengeance 3200mhz Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050ti Asus rog strix gaming-f b450
Corsair 550 watt semi modular psu 480 GB kingston ssd

Ive had issues with my pc when i had older components and even after the upgrade ive had consistent problems

The problems consist of, freezing on my windows home, on startup (lock screen), games, on google (yt, twitch...everything) and its progressively getting worse...more common and longer lasting, its caused me a great amount of stress and i now think its either my gpu or my os

Ive discussed this with my dads friend...sounds to good to be true, but hes a qualified white hat hacker and very familiar with computers and malicious software ext, hes looksd in my bios to check any abnormalities and found non which leads him to belive its my os and i may be infected with a virus, causing these issues.

If i could get some other possibilities from you guys id much appreciate it.

I almost forgot to say ive done some mild benchmarking and all seemed decent but yk as its Christmas soon i wanna make the right purchase and not drop another £350 on a gpu (5700xt) for no reason

Also last point, im not the most advanced when it comes to pc's and viruses ext so i couldve got some of the terminology incorrect which I apologise in advance for 😂

    Best air cooler under 155mm?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 02:01 PM PST

I'm trying to decide between the Scythe Mugen 5 revb.b and the Fuma 2.

This will be installed on my R7 3600x which is in an Aorus elite MB with G.Skill Trident z Neo ram (kinda tall). In a Lian Li O11 dynamic (Non XL).

I currently have a Noctua NH-U9s (dual fan) installed and it's idling between 38c-50c and hits 72c while running cinebench. This doesn't seem right to me being that this is all at bone stock clocks.

Eventually I plan on building a nice custom liquid loop, but for now I just want an air cooler that will keep this thing cool running stock clocks.

    What do you recommend? Thanks!

Strange question, but do I need fans to be mounted to the radiator?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:43 PM PST

The reason I ask this is because the cpu cooler im getting has (kraken x62 rev 2) a 280mm radiator, while as the case has 3 120mm slots for fans (and yes the case can fit 280mm radiators), or 2 140mm.

Basically, I was wondering if I could have the 280mm radiator installed, yet keep the 3 120mm fans.

Upgrading "the ancient one" to handle 2k monitor & gaming

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:26 AM PST

    Greetings,

I might be trying to get a 2k (144hz?) monitor for Christmas. But I know it requires a stronger system. I was wondering what people would suggest would be the best way to upgrade the following. Pricing would be basically minimum as possible (if it's even possible). If it starts to become too much, then I'll basically do a full overhaul.

(I couldn't do part picker as some of my items aren't on there)

    Type Name Specs
    CPU Intel i7 i7-2600 3.4 GHz
GPU ATI Radeon TWO ATI Radeon HD 4670
    Motherboard Asus P7Z68-V Asus P8Z68-V Pro/GEN3
    RAM KomputerBay 32GB (8gb pc3-12800 DDR3 1600Mhz)
Harddrive Samsung Evo SSD Evo 860 500GB SSD

If this is too ancient or "un-upgradable". I will simply go with a upgraded 1080p for my GTX 980M laptop.
