    Simple Questions - November 26, 2019

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

IO panel prongs, wtf are you supposed to do with them?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:19 AM PST

I've always been confused about them and there's never been a mention of them in the manual that I've seen. I'll be helping a kid build soon and don't wanna look like an idiot.

Those little prongs on each hole in the IO panel on cheaper motherboards. Are you supposed to bend them back so they're kind of a spring against the ports? Cut them off? Put them inside the ports? Shove them up your butt?

    I'm really confused.

EDIT: my masters level technical drawing of wtf I'm talking about.. Red is how they come in the box, green is kinda what I'm suggesting. Hard to draw on a phone

HDMI slots on GPU being covered by case.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:05 AM PST

    Hey everyone :)

Building my first pc atm, been playing video games on shitty laptops for way too long. I got myself an aorus b450 motherboard, gigabyte rx 570 gpu, ryzen 5 2600 cpu and corsair carbide 100r case, upon recommendation of a good mate.

Now unfortunately after everything is installed, the gpu sits in a position that does not allow HDMI cords to be plugged in, as the lip of the case covers the top of the slot like so.

Short of filing down the case to make the card fit in fine, is there a fix for this?

    Thanks guys :)

It's finally happening! I've been lurking on every related subreddit for a while but delaying the purchase for another moment, until now!

I even thought about making a 2200g build with no GPU to upgrade it later, but here I am...Some parts were unplanned tho:

CPU: 3600 was my max, I know the X isn't worth it, but with the discounts it was only 10€ more, so...

RAM: Never looked for fancy lights, yet they where cheaper than the normal version

GPU: Again the normal 5700 was my limit and again took the bait at that price (here it is around 430-440)

PSU: A bit too much power, yet again it was discounted and I've read that it's a long term item.

I think that all this overbudget came from my purchase 6 months ago of the Dell monitor. Funny enough I've been using it at 1080p60hz (720p while playing) for all this time, so it is going to be like a new purchase once I put all together.

The last step it's not screwing up everything while building. I've seen so many comments claiming how easy it is, let check it tomorrow reddit!

Advice and recommendations for a 1440p 144hz build

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:49 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm looking for advice on a potential new PC I'm putting together. I'm aiming for a rig that can pull 1440p 144hz on max settings for less intensive games such as CS:GO, and over 60 fps on AAA titles, especially any new titles such as Cyberpunk. I'm aiming for a certain degree of futureproofing and potential for expansion, since I don't want to drop this much cash on a build that won't be able to handle games at least few years into the future. This build will be used almost exclusively for gaming, with general productivity as well, but no intensive content creation. My budget is around $1500 excluding a monitor. One thing that I am being very picky about with this build is trying to avoid flashy, RGB, gamer-y components, like gigantic heatsinks on motherboards and gaudy logos. Here is my PCPartPicker list so far:

Here are my thoughts and questions regarding each component:

    CPU

I was primarily comparing the i7-9700k and the Ryzen R7 3700x, and from what I've seen the i7 performs better in a gaming context. Since these two CPUs are priced very similarly, I went with the i7. However, I realize that in a 1440p 144hz scenario the graphics card is going to be the primary bottleneck, and with this in mind, would it make sense to downgrade the processor and save money?

    CPU Cooler

This seems to be the best air cooler on the market currently, with similar performance to the NH-D15, better clearances, and is $10 less. My only issue is that it is a fairly large cooler with an ugly fan, but I think I could live with this. The reason I chose such a powerful air cooler over something more discreet is because I want overclocking headroom. I'm open to suggestions for better coolers, especially ones that would fit with a black aesthetic.

    Motherboard

This ASRock board is one of the only m-ATX Z390 boards I could find that didn't have a gigantic ROG logo or an RGB CMOS battery or something stupid like that. I really, really want to avoid that cliche 'gamer' look as much as possible without buying a weak product or making unnecessary compromises. From what I understand, the motherboard doesn't have a major impact on performance, so I simply found a board that had the right chipset and socket, with a simple look that I liked, and went with it. It also doesn't hurt that this one is priced very reasonably for a Z390 at $114. One question though: is Z390 necessary for my needs? I understand that I need Z390 or Z370 if I ever want to overclock, but from what I've read the only thing I'm losing by rolling back to Z370 is a few miscellaneous upgrades. My only fear with z370 is that I would need an older processor to update the bios, which I don't have.

    Memory

I thought that this memory was a good fit for my needs because it falls in that "sweet spot" of capacity, speed, and timing, with 16 GB @ 3000MHz and a CAS latency of 16. It's also fairly priced, and comes in a 4x4gb config, which I prefer over 2x8gb. I understand that speed doesn't matter as much with Intel as it does with Ryzen, so I didn't go for 3200+ (also because I couldn't find many affordable or in-stock 4x4 kits). I also like the look of this ram with its simple, matte black heatspreader.

    Storage

Kinda run-of-the-mill choices here. A decently-sized M.2 SSD for the boot drive and programs, and a larger SATA SSD for games and other storage. I've been running a 128GB SSD boot drive and 1TB HDD game drive for 5+ years now and I haven't had any problems whatsoever, so I see no reason to make any drastic changes. If I manage to run out of space, I can always add another drive.

    GPU

Here's the main event. I chose the RTX 2070 Super because from what I've read, it's a baseline 1440p 144hz card - i.e., it's capable of running less intensive games max settings @ 144hz, and managing the more intensive titles at still very playable framerates, albeit less than 144fps unless you turn the settings down. This is pretty much what I'm looking for. Additionally, I considered a used 1080Ti since it is basically the same price and does beat this card at most games. However, I decided against this primarily because a) I don't really like the idea of getting a used card for the same price as a slightly worse new card, especially considering that the used card might have a shorter lifespan, and b) while RTX is currently a niche product, it seems like the number of games that support it will increase dramatically in the future. So, I chose this card because it will help me future-proof my build at the expense of a few fps. I chose the Gigabyte Gaming OC card because I like the way it looks, and because it seems to be a reasonable price. I also like the looks of the Asus Dual Evo (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/cNGnTW/asus-geforce-rtx-2070-super-8-gb-dual-evo-oc-video-card-dual-rtx2070s-o8g-evo) and the Asus Strix (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/h23mP6/asus-geforce-rtx-2070-super-8-gb-strix-gaming-advanced-video-card-rog-strix-rtx2070s-a8g-gaming), but I'm not sure what the actual differences between them are - they all seem to have the same perfomance, but the Strix is $80 more expensive than the Gigabyte card.

    Case

I had a lot of trouble finding a nice minimalist and compact case that I liked, but I can confidently say that I genuinely love the way that this case looks. It's a black box with clean IO and a window. That's all I need, and that's all I want. If you have any other recommendations for really simple and clean mATX cases, windowed or not, I would love to hear them.

    Power Supply

Yes, 750W is definitely overkill for this computer. But the RM750X seems to be a fairly priced, fully modular PSU. I like that it's fully modular because it means that I don't have to stuff cables behind the PSU shroud, and I'll have an easier time making my cable management look nice. Additionally the wattage overhead gives me some options for expandability in the future. I'm open to any recommendations.

    Monitor

From what I've seen, this monitor is the best on the market right now. Major reasons why I chose this monitor are that it has all the bells and whistles, including G-Sync support so that even when I dip under 144fps it'll still be smooth. I'm still using a 1680x1050 8ms monitor from 2007 whose back light has been halfway in the grave for a year, so I wanted to splurge for this.

Well that's all that I've managed to get together so far. It's been a while since I built a computer and I haven't been paying attention to the tech world for a few years, so this is what I managed to put together after a few days of research. I'm just looking for some suggestions because I want to get the best bang for my buck, and I'm sure I made some bad component choices in there. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Could someone explain to me the differences of the different ssd’s?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:05 AM PST

I have no idea if I should buy a m.2 or the other ones, what they do and if they are at all compatible to my motherboard/build?

Also, can I make it so that the new ssd is the new main C drive?

    Any input would be appreciated

    High end enthusiast build help/suggestions

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm working on a second pc build for Video editing (DaVinci), music production (FL Studio/Ableton), and overall gaming. As I have gotten a substantial raise last year, I've been planning out this build for a while.

I did make a few changes as new parts came out but I think I'm finally happy with this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mDK4sk

My last question about everything before I start buying parts... are there any changes or suggestions do you guys have after looking at this build (for gpu/cpu/memory/ssd)?

MSI X570 Motherboard not recognizes M.2 NVME SSD as bootable drive

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:51 AM PST

I am looking for some help to resolve an issue with my MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus motherborad BIOS set ups. I recently bought a Patriot Viper VPN100 PCIe SSD with the capacity of 512 Gb and it cannot be used as a bootable hard drive.

I tried many ways to set up the BIOS in the right way to accept the new drive but have no luck with this.

    1. As it was recommended, I went to PCI Subsystem Settings and set it to M.2 mode (changing PCIe settings from x16 to x4x4x4x4) then set the BOOT section from UEFI+LEGACY to UEFI. Here I set up the right order to have UEFI Hard disk at the first place in the list. The problem is, in UEFI Boot mode the only BBS Priority is the UEFI USB Hard Disk Drive. After saving these options I started to install Windows 10. There was no issue in selecting the SSD where to install, right after it is finished, it required a restart as an usual part of the process. After reboot, the computer went back to the first stage of the installation process, despite, the files are actually on the drive (clearly visible, based on the available space and content). I made a second attempt and it just led me to an infinite loop.

1.1 in case if the flash drive is removed while the system restarts after the installation, it goes back to the BIOS and remains there.

    1. If I leave the boot mode in Legacy+UEFI, the board allows me to select the M.2 as boot option #1 and it can be also selected in the list of Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities. The problem here is, when the installation starts, the system not allows me to select it on the installation page the SSD, because a pop up window saying it is blocked in the BIOS.

Changing CSM to UEFI in advanced settings/Windows OS configuration also has no effect on the result of scenario nr.1.

Hope anybody among you has experience with MSI BIOS+M.2 since this is my first time I am using both.

Let me know if further details required or the issue not described well. Thanks!

    Upgrade Monitor, CPU, or GPU?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:33 PM PST

    Hi all!

I'm looking to upgrade some parts, but not sure what to upgrade first. I really want a new monitor (IPS), but I'm not sure if it's worth doing that with the GPU and CPU that I currently have. Here's my build from Dec. 2016:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/nlannin3/saved/#view=DkCLkL

My monitor is only 1080p 60Hz, so I feel like I'm lacking in that area. However, I don't know whether I should jump to 1080 144Hz or to 1440 60Hz (or 144Hz if I can find a deal.) Also, everyone keeps telling me to get a g-sync monitor since I have a Nvidia graphics card, but that seems pricey for what you get in return. Thoughts?

If you think my GPU or CPU is worth upgrading first, let me know! Otherwise, I'll take suggestions on monitors.

I should note that I'm not looking for a monitor over 27" and I'm only looking to upgrade a single part at a time since my build really isn't that old. My budget is probably around $500 for right now, but that's near the top of what I'd like to spend.

I use the PC purely for gaming. FPS mostly, but I mix in some SP games from time-to-time. I usually keep up with what's current: Apex, COD, BF, Fallen Order, PUBG, etc.

    Thanks in advance!

    Gigabyte H310-M S2H Motherboard

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 12:52 PM PST

    Couple of questions:

Does this have good longevity? (Plan to use this PC for 5 or so years)

Is it compatible with 9th gen intel? (Might upgrade further down the line).

Is this an overall good budget motherboard?

For reference, I'm pairing it with an i5 8400 and GTX 1070, and if it's at all relevant, I plan to be playing VR on it.

Also, if their are any other better motherboards on the market (Getting this for £52 from amazon) in a similar price range, please let me know.

    Thanks for any help.

Will higher-end parts keep the PC from locking up?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:59 AM PST

What I mean is, my experience with a lot of PCs, is that they will occasionally just have the software be unresponsive and have you wait, or you need to close out of it. They'd also occasionally freeze for a few seconds.

I'm assuming this might be because either the processor is overloading and can't keep up, or because there's insufficient RAM for the task(s). Unless there's a third thing, but I do know I want to eliminate that aspect altogether. I'm assuming that, if I were to get maybe an 8-core multi-threaded processor, and 16-32 GB of RAM, would that keep the "freezing up" from happening?

(For reference, my current PC has a Pentium G4560 and 8 GB RAM, and it sticks a lot when I do things like edit or have a lot of tabs open, and even when gaming occasionally.)

Building a new PC for the first time in a few years

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 06:03 AM PST

    Hey folks,

As the title says, I'm looking to build a new PC for the first time in a few years and have been a bit out of the loop with what's hot or not. I'm hoping to snag a bargain or two during the Black Friday sales!

My research indicates that this is a pretty decent spec to go for at my price range (~£1200-1500). I'm pushing for full SSD storage this time around as the overwhelming majority of my space goes towards games. I'll use the mechanical drive from my current PC for mass storage of media files.

Does anything here stand out as a mistake? I'm trying a micro-ATX build this time with the hope of having a PC that's slightly easier to lug around without being a pain to put together, but can be persuaded to stay with ATX if there's a trick I'm missing.

    Thanks very much!

    GTX1080TI not working properly

so recently my GPU has been causing me some problems in games. it uses 100% in simple games like csgo according to task manager, and i only get like 40 fps. this also happens in modern warfare and other games but not always. according to performance it is using 0.4/11GB of dedicated GPU memory and 0.5/19GB GPU memory and 0.0/8GB shared GPU memory. i have no idea how to fix this so all tips are welcome.

    the GPU is GTX1080 TI

Building my first PC. Looking for advice and a reality check.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:59 PM PST

I am finally able to invest in a new PC and finally move past my old GTX 550 Ti. I am shooting for gaming PC (Outer Worlds, RDR2, etc) with a budget between €1100-1300 and based on my research the build listed below looks pretty good. However, getting back into hardware has been overwhelming and I would like general advice on the build below. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get a better value for my money? Would you make any changes?

    Thanks!!

How dangerous is a 6 to 8 pin pcie adapter on a Corsair cmpsu 450vx?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:54 PM PST

I got this for 30 dollars on eBay and since it's Corsair and all Corsair psu are from seasonic, I thought it was a good deal. Since it's an older psu, (2012 I think) it doesn't have a 6+2 connector since gpu back then didn't need much power I guess. Im using the adapter for an rx 570 and all I plan to really do is minecraft and planet coaster, and the power limit of the rx 570 is 200 watts. So if I get 75 from the slot and 75 from the adapter, would it be dangerous to use the adapter?

Rainbow budget-friendly, ready to purchase. Looking for final thoughts

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:36 PM PST

Recently, to my not surprise, my best friend came out to me. Having talked about building a PC for him in the past, now seemed like the perfect time to put something together to both celebrate his coming out, and begin his indoctrination into the PC Master Race. As such, I spent a bit of time building a PC that was functional to a new PC gamer, allowing for at least 1080p, which staying within a decent budget.

I realize there's no case yet, but the case is something I can pickup easily. I also have a brand new 2TB HDD so I'll be throwing that into the machine. I do not think this computer will be overclocked by him, but I will be personally clocking the CPU a bit higher. I'm wondering also if the 1660ti should be dropped to something a little less expensive as the only games I think that'll be "graphically intensive" might be FFXIV, Overwatch, or LoL. As for the RAM, the 3600mhz was priced pretty similarly to the 3000 and 3200, but I'm wondering if I should just drop from 3600 to 3200. Anyways! This build is ready for purchase, I am just looking for some final thoughts or opinions that I havent considered :).

I also wanted to rainbow the shit out of it. So this is what I've come up with.

EDIT: I also have 3 120 A-RGB fans with me.
