Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Why do people pick Nvidia over AMD?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 04:53 AM PDT

I mean... My friend literally bought a 1660 TI for 550 when he could get a 6600 XT for 500. He said AMD was bad but this card is like twice as good

Need an incredibly small MATX case. Any ideas?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I have a very specific desk that is killing me trying to find a case that fits within in.

The motherboard is Matx, and I'm hoping to not have to return it for an itx.

The max height is 7 inches (ever so slightly more, but no way 8 inches)

The max width is 11 inches

The max depth is 18 inches

Any ideas are really appreciated! Thank you!

Edit: I would really prefer to buy my own psu if possible. Sfx or atx, I don't mind either way. But I do plan to fit a dGPU in the case. Even if it's a slim form factor one.

Good Monitor for 1080p 144hz Gaming

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 04:18 AM PDT

So I just bought the parts for my first ever gaming pc and now I need a monitor. So what are some good HD Monitors at 144 / 120 hz that support G sync at the 200€ pricemark?

The guy at my local tech store recommended this, but it doesn't support G sync (also costs 200€)

Any Way To Find Out If It's My CPU or Motherboard Which is Broken?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:37 PM PDT

I have a new build with 5600X CPU and ASUS B550-I motherboard.

When I turn my PC on, the fans spin up to 100% (and stay there) but it does not post or do any video output, so I can't even get to the bios.

I know the RAM is good, and clean, and I even put in another working kit I had available, and still had the issue occur. I tried with one stick at a time as well, same result.

I reseated the CPU (there are no bent pins) and got everything working for a day, but then it started happening again.

Is there any way to find out if I have a bad motherboard or a bad CPU (I have heard the 5600X occasionally has issues recognize that any RAM is installed). I don't have another motherboard or CPU to test with.

    Thanks in advance!

Can someone help me decide how I should connect my computer to the internet?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 08:48 AM PDT

Just moved out of my apartment where I was always connected via Ethernet cable. Now my computer is separated by two floors from the router. Running a wire isn't an option unfortunately.

If someone could ELI5 (I'm not technologically inclined at all) what would be the best option for me, I'd really appreciate it. For context I play FPS, and would like to spend under $100, unless I could get a substantially better connection by spending a little more.

    Weird lag/ stutter

I built the pc in the middle of july, everything was running smoothly until recently, I get weird screen tearing or lag I can't tell, because for example when the screen lags on csgo it doesn't show on the fps counter. Used to happen on apex (still get frame drops there from time to time), doesn't anymore after I updated my drivers. It feels rather than frames dropping it's like my monitor becomes 1hz for a second then goes back to normal, the temperatures dont even reach 60 on cs the ram use is around 40% when gaming. Could it be the graphics drivers? Also if I'm reinstalling the drivers should I use my hdmi instead of the display port?

    Solution: AMD Threadripper 3970X/Asus TRX40-Xe/G.Skill F4-3600C18 Under-valuing RAM

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 01:23 AM PDT

Posting this for anyone in the future that comes across the same problem as I have had - and as I, have also been unable to find a solution.

    System configuration:

    CPU: AMD Threadripper 3970X Motherboard: Asus TRX40-Xe Gaming Ram: 192GB G.Skill (3x F4-3600C18D-64GVK packs)

Issue: When following the correct installation procedure with all units in place, by default the ram reads as 2666mhz 1333 FLCK ram. This means the system will not reach peak potential.

This ram is NOT on the QVL list and therefore not a standard recommendation for the build. But I never listened to anyone before, why start now.

Testing: Placing 2 units and then 4 units into the machine, I managed to get DOCP to correctly identify the profile for the ram with the correct timings 18-22-22-42.

Upon placing the 5th and 6th units in (on the same power down) the system fails to identify the DOCP profile and I could not get it to work by entering in data directly into BIOS Ai Tweaker using DRAM timing control.

    Solution:

1: Place the 5th and 6th units of RAM against the advice of the motherboard user guide in slots D2 & B2 - this means, slots D1/D2/C2 & A2/B2/B1 are filled. Refer to Section 1 page 4 of the user guide if you are unaware of the RAM slot naming conventions.

(Note: When powering up into windows, you may experience some GUI issues such as clicking on the power button in the windows menu. It does not appear logging into windows is necessary to work around this issue.)

2: Once you have done the above and have the correct number of DIMMs with the correct DOCP profile detected, power the machine down and place the DIMMs in the correct layout on the motherboard (D1/C1/C2, A2/A1/B1).

I realise my setup is obscure, but hope this might save someone in the future 2 days of fiddling with their system as I have spent.

CPU Upgrade to pair with RX 6600 XT (from Ryzen 5 1600)

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 11:44 AM PDT

Hey guys, recently replaced my long-dead RX 580 with a 6600 XT that was bundled with a B550M Steel Legend. While I was perfectly happy to upgrade from my ancient B350 Pro I was confronted with the fact that my (equally ancient) Ryzen 5 1600 is not compatible with the new MoBo.

This is my first PC upgrade in years as you can probably tell so I'm pretty far out of the loop on the CPU scene.

I was hoping somebody more knowledgeable than me could point me in the right direction for upgrading here. I know the B550 can handle the latest Ryzen 9 processors but that seems pretty obviously overkill. But even when looking at the 5 and 7 generations there seems to be several instances where the former outperforms the latter.

I know the 6600 xt isn't the best card but I don't want to accidentally buy a CPU that still holds my system back.

So, what's a practical choice for upgrading my CPU? I don't want to overcompensate but I'm not looking to skimp out either. If you can help me narrow down the goldilocks range here I'd really appreciate it.

    Are there tradein's for monitors/displays?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I have an extra display - it's too big to be a rack mounted display and I couldn't likely sell it. I took advantage of the best buy tradein for hard drives, but I can't find much outside of Staples for getting rid of old monitors.

    It's an LG Flatron IPS236

Can't update BIOS, what should I do?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 01:25 PM PDT

I bought the strix b450-f and 5600x. Until I came to update the bios before building my pc, I stupidly assumed that the b450-f had bios flashback. It does not. Pretty sure the pc will not post to bios until the bios is updated. Should I buy a new motherboard with bios flashback?

    How to improve this build??

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 09:03 AM PDT

Hello! I want to build a PC for as cheap as possible so I have set my budget at £500. I have made a AMD build don't know what to do to improve it. If you can edit the list and improve it for around £500 or tell me this is fine that would help out a lot thanks!

1440p vs 4k Gaming (Max Settings)

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:33 PM PDT

Ok, so a bit of background context first: I play a lot of story-based games, as well as multiplayer games. My usuals are Assassins Creed, R6 Siege, Apex, Splitgate, CoD and Rocket League, just to name a few. Not only do I play these in my free time, I also stream them (this isn't a plug, I'm just outlining that sometimes my PC is under more stress than casual gaming). I enjoy playing competitively just as much as casually on these FPS titles and I'm in the market for a new monitor.

For so long, I've been set on the LG 27GP950-B, which boasts 4K, 160Hz, 1ms response time and a nano IPS, 27" display. However, the longer I've looked at getting a 4k display, and how many frames the 3080 FTW Ultra can produce at 4k, Ultra settings, the more I question whether running around 60fps (higher on some titles) is worth it when there's the alliterative of 1440p.
I haven't got a 1440p monitor in mind, however the fps difference that the EVGA 3080 FTW Ultra can produce is big, sometimes x2 compared to 4k.

With the background knowledge of the games I play and the fact that I stream, going purely off of fps and whether the bump from 1440p to 4k is worth it, which would you recommend?

Can my GTX 970 be used in this new build?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:30 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am from Denmark and would likee a sanity check on my first ever build. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nHvWHz

I want to use my gtx 970 if possible until I can get an upgrade at a decent price. Is it possible or should I bite the bullet?

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I want to play fps at 165 Hz at 1080p (CS;GO, PUBG) and more casual games on 60-100 Hz 1440p. I am willing to play on low/medium settings with my current graphics cards. With a new GPU I want to play new FPS titles at least at 1080p 144Hz at High settings.

Some of the items are on sale which is why I have chosen them over some similar items.

    Questions:

Is the GTX 970 sufficient for now or is it too much of a bottleneck?

Is the CL18 RAM okay or does it "need" to be CL16 to get better performance? It will cost me $50 extra to go for CL18

Any suggestions are super welcome and thank you!

Help me shave down this build

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:25 PM PDT

I was getting ready to build a system right when COVID and the shortages hit. I've been trying to wait it out but have succumbed to the reality that I need something now. So I've tried to put together a stopgap build. I expect I'll be replacing this in a few years, probably moving parts from this into the server rack. Before that I'll get a proper GPU once they come down from the sky.

    Uses will be:

    • Emulation/gaming (retro through PS1 at least, but would love to get PS3 working)
    • Light/medium PC gaming
    • Some heavy-duty software builds
    • General HTPC (4k, streaming from the NAS, Dolby Atmos)
    • On-site backup of main NAS for critical files

Since eventually I'll probably upgrade to Zen 4 or whatever Intel has at the time (new motherboard, etc.), I'd like to reduce the cost of this a bit without sacrificing too much capability..
    Any suggestions?

My dad's complaining that his PC can't handle 4k video. What sort of specs does he need?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:25 PM PDT

He has an old crappy desktop and a monitor of similarly poor quality. He says he wants to watch his videos (which he apparently films at 4K?) but that the videos are stuttery when he tries to watch them. He wants a new PC that can handle playing back high quality video.

What sort of specs does he need for that?
