    Simple Questions - November 30, 2020

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:16 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

1st Timers... This is a very bad time to build a PC

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:13 AM PST

This is really for everyone, not just 1st timers... but it seems like were entering some dark times lol... Friday there was a mass "restock" of 5800x and GPUs (not the new cards but 5700xt to be specific)... I thought this was a sign of some sort of stabilization. I wake up today, getting ready to start teaching, and just casually check MC to see if they have any worthwhile Cyber Monday deals (I live in Chicago, so technically I'm blessed with two locations)... ALLLL of those 5800x that were available Friday and Saturday, gone... all of those 5700xt and just about every other worthwhile GPU, gone... now maybe its just cause it was Black Friday but I have NEVER seen MC not have any worthwhile GPU in stock. I look and all I see is one Liquid Devil each at both of my local stores...

Maybe I'm being skeptical but it seems like were about to go into a Gaming PC Dark Age lol... I'm already seeing 5700xt getting resold for $700+ because they're now just "gone." 1st timers, whatever you do... and typically I don't care how people spend their money... but do not overpay for any of these CPU's/GPU's ... just wait for the restock or 2021 like most people. That "Dream Build" is not worth burning an extra $300-$500 for one part.

I’m excited and don’t have anyone to share it with.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:16 PM PST

I bought a CyberPower with Ryzen 3700 with a 3070 for the sole purpose of swapping the 3070 with my current 1070. Then added a 27" 1440p 165Hz monitor to my 2 24" 1080p 144Hz monitors. I'm just really excited and don't really have anyone to share in my excitement with and figured y'all could appreciate it.

Anywho hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving weekend whether you observe it or not!

    --EDIT--

Thanks for all the awards and nice comments y'all!

    For those asking:

This is the prebuilt I bought.

    This is my current build.

This will be the build once everything gets here.

And yes my plan is to sell the prebuilt rig with the used 1070 put in it. The 1TB NVMe and R7 3700 would still be upgrades over what I currently run, but I'm looking to get back most of what I spent so I don't want to take those parts out.

Am I the only one bored of seeing kids ripping on people for buying 'pre-builts' everywhere?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:34 AM PST

All I seem to see on social media nowadays is people ripping into pre-builds, because 'you got ripped off'. 'Watch out the PSU is going to explode'. 'I could build that Ryzen 9 3900x, RTX 3080 build myself for £800'

This doesn't happen with any other item. You don't see people ripping into people for ordering a dominos because they could've made their own pizza for 10% of the price. Or people ripping into others for getting a decorator in to paint their walls when they could've done it themselves for free.

It seems like people can't differentiate between a fully custom pc build and a pre-build either. What's wrong with choosing all the parts you want including a reputable 80+ rated gold psu, and a great mobo with great OC potential etc etc, and paying £150 to have a reputable company do it for you? If you're completely new to PC building you would have to spend multiple hours researching what parts you need, probably 4-5 hours building and installing windows etc if it's your first time, and it's quite stressful for some people as they're worried they will break something. That £150 means they now have parts and labour warranty for a few years, and everything will arrive built and set-up. Most people don't have a spare GPU or PSU lying around if something goes faulty, making it hard for them to pin-point the cause of an issue, meaning they may go out and have to buy a replacement part they don't even need.

I'm all for building your own PC and would always recommend it, as the feeling when all the parts finally arrive and you're ready to start your build is obviously amazing. But for some people that £150 extra spent on a £1500 build is so worth it for the technical support, stress saved, and hours of their time saved researching and building.

It's so frustrating seeing people ask for help on facebook build groups, and just seeing laughing reacts, and 'YoU CoUlD BuIlD iT YoUrSeLf FoR £500 ChEaPeR'. Even when it's mums trying to find their 10 year old son their first gaming PC and don't know the first thing about technology.

So yeah am I the only person that finds this annoying lol?

    Rant over xo

    All 3090 Card Lengths

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:29 AM PST

It's pretty obvious from the title, although I figured this could be a good reference for others trying to plan their builds in a Covid world. I just side mounted an X63 and realized that now I only have 306mm of clearance for my GPU not realizing the sheer size of most of these beasts. Of course, the PCP board on most of the GPUs is much smaller although I can't be bothered to take off the backplate and all that.

I have a full list of specific models and their size on google sheets so if you would prefer that shoot me a message and I'll try to get back relatively quick.

    MSI 305mm, 323mm, 336mm
    Gigabyte 320mm, 319mm
    ZOTAC 318mm
    Asus 300mm, 319mm
    EVGA 285mm, 300mm

Key Words: Length, 3090, GPU Length, 3090 Length

    Edit: FE 313mm

    My first build

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:18 PM PST

I'll start by saying this, it's not much but it's mine and I couldn't love it more.

For months I've been trying to save up and buy a pc, but something always come up, car accident, cat got sick, I got sick, wife had teeth removed, moved houses, blew a tire, all that. Finally, Black Friday rolled around, and I really wanted this to be the time I got my pc. I was already really limited in terms of budget (500€), so not getting the new rtx 3000 amd 5000 and 6000 series wasn't a problem.

I had no idea what I was doing at first, and wanted to buy a pre-built for around that money, but soon started to educate myself and decided it was better to have a custom build, many many months later, here it is. It's name is Kalkuryia (don't ask why) and I love it.

The specs are: Ryzen 3 3100 (actually found one at Msrp) MSI B450 A Pro Max board Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 16gb 3200MHz Nox Hummer x600w 80+BR semi modular psu GTX 1660 Super Asus TUF Kioxia 240gb 2.5 SSD Nox infinity Delta Case

I plan to soon add more storage, an aftermarket cooler and get some more fans. Also trade monitors since the one I had is a 1440p but is only 60hz.

Links below to some crappy images

this is actually insane. stated as a $600 build, but because of black friday, everything going out of stock, the price rose to over $800. 16 GB ram for $100???? case doubled in price???!!! 3100 isnt a budget option any more?!!! anyone know when these will be back in stock? sometime around december?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:04 AM PST

Feels like the budget market is gone.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:08 PM PST

All the budget CPUs are no longer budget. It seems the msrp listings have been bought up and now you're seeing r5 3600 go for $280, a 2600 for 180, a 3100 for $190. Hell in the gpu market, nvidia 1660 series has skyrocketed to over $400. The 5600xt's are quickly joining them. I feel like I was fortunate enough to buy all my parts three weeks ago before this all happened.

New PC is having terrible fps in most games

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:35 AM PST

Hello everyone, I recently built a new pc with the following specs

    CPU: Intel i9 10900k

    GPU:MSI Trio rtx 3080

    Cooler: Corsair h100i platinum

    PSU: Corsair 850x 80+ gold

Ram: 32 gb 3600mhz Corsair Dominator

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Hero XII Wifi

For some reason no matter what I do I get the following fps.

    AC Odyssey: 25fps

    League of Legends: 40ish fps

    Borderlands 3: 25-30fps

    AC Valhalla: About 30fps

Edit: AC Origins is getting 120fps which is within its parameters from what I could find online.

I have tried changing all of the settings in nvdia control panel, reseating the gpu, making sure I have two separate cables powering the gpu, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and I have run multiple benchmark tests in heaven and the scores were perfectly within the parameters for the hardware I am running with low cpu usage and near 100% gpu usage at all times during the test. I am approaching my wits end with this thing.

I am gaming on ultra high settings on a 3440/1440 alienware monitor with a 120hz refresh rate.

Any help you can offer would be amazing and I thank you for it.

Edit 2: Thank you to everyone who took the time to help, I tried all of your suggestions and I cannot fix the fps issue. I will be taking it into get looked at once Covid clears in my city a bit more.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I just built this PC about a month or so ago and run into the problem of the PC doing these "soft" reboots were in the middle of using the PC (doesnt matter if Im gaming or just surfing the web) the screens go black, all RGB turns off, then the MSI MAG boot logo pops up and has me sign into the windows desktop as if I just started the computer. This issue happens randomly except for getting the same 5 errors in Event Viewer.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I originally had an RTX 2060 and had no issues but since installing my 3080 Ive ran into several issues with BSOD but I fixed that using DDU to do a clean driver install. Now I get these "soft" reboots and 5 error messages in event viewer everytime and am stumped what to do.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

No other details I can think of besides the GPU being vertically mounted and using a riser cable. 3x seperate power cables from the PSU are connected to the GPU so no daisy chaining. All drivers/chipset are up to date. I am on the most recent BIOS from MSI. Temperatures are all normal varying between 35c-60c for CPU/GPU

    Decent Motherboard for a 9900k?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:33 PM PST

I'm helping my friend to build a computer, and I really no literally nothing about motherboards. Does anyone have recommendations for decent motherboards that won't break the bank? I'm looking at the ASUS Prime Z390-A or the MSI Z390-A Pro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Doh! Bumped a tiny wire while dusting

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:29 PM PST

Hello BuildaPC folks! I was taking some time this afternoon to dust out my case and I bumped this tiny little wire while I was getting the dust on the bottom of the case.

It's partially taped to the bottom and runs to the back panel. The first picture is of the connector, the second is a spot on the motherboard where some similar wires are plugged in, and the third is what it runs to on the back of the tower.

I'm not sure what that is/if I use it. It's covered by that black plastic clip. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    http://imgur.com/a/lezaOBn

    Thanks!

Edit: y'all are awesome! Thanks for the quick response. It was the "main" line for the wifi antenna, plugged it back into that chip next to the gray one.

Pro tip, remove the whole wifi chip to if it in. After 45 minutes trying to do it with the chip in place, failing with my giant hands, I noticed that it could be removed. Badda boom, plugged in in 30 secs easy.

Looking for smallest case (or close to) for full ATX size motherboard for reasonable price. under 100$.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:09 AM PST

Hey guys. I'm looking for a new case for my computer as I lost the side panel to mine (long story) and also missing some of the front panel pop outs.

I have a full ATX motherboard and would really like a smaller form factor case but without spending crazy cash. Under 100$ would be great. I don't think I'm too picky, but the smaller the better. I'd like something under a mid tower in size for sure. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Need help buying a monitor...

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:51 AM PST

I bought a high-end gaming laptop recently. Top of the line CPU, GPU, 32GB of RAM, what could go wrong right? That is, until I started playing Red Dead Redemption 2. The game runs smooth as butter but the screen is dim as all fuck. I tried calibrating the brightness using the game's in-game calibrator and adjusting the contrast through Nvidia, and it just doesn't look right. If the environment is bright enough, than the sun, the clouds and anything white glow too intense and out of proportion. If I tone it down so they look normal again, the the environment is too dim. I played this game before on PS4 on a flat screen TV I bought 7 years ago, so I know how good this game is capable of looking. I managed to calibrate the game on both setups using the instructions, and for some reason, the game just looks better on my TV. I don't know if it's a problem with contrast ratio, my laptop boasts 1000:1 CR, but only gets 300 nits of brightness.

Anyway, I'm looking for a gaming monitor with 1440p resolution, 144hz refresh rate and low response time, but the color and brightness need to be on the level, like a TV. I want to feel like it's high noon on a bright, sunny day when playing RDR2, I want the colors to pop. I tried using my TV as a monitor for the laptop but it's a 7 year old TV with a 60hz refresh rate, it was a budget TV when I bought it, at that. After testing a few games it's evident that PC games are optimized for monitors. My budget is no more than $1,000 (but obviously, the cheaper, the better).

I was just looking at the Samsung Odyssey G7 and noticed that it only gets to 300 nits of brightness, like my laptop. I can't help but feel that gaming monitors are quite inferior to TVs in this aspect. Like I mentioned above, I like fast frame rates, response times and all that, but the colors and the brightness need to come alive at me, this is very important, otherwise I'll just return everything and buy a PS5 instead. Anything I should know or worthy mentions?

Edit: forgot to mention, no extra-wide displays.

Finally catching up to the mid 2010s. Build almost done

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:47 AM PST

So I've been using a 3770 and 1050ti with 12gb of ram for a good while and have wanted to upgrade. Well I'm finally doing it. This new PC will have

i7 4790 GTX 1660ti 32gb of RAM A PSU that can actually run it all without me getting nervous

And much of this I managed to get dirt cheap or free so the final cost was about $350 CAD and I might be able to recoup some of that by selling the old system. Just waiting on the DisplayPort to DVI adapter to I can use my old monitor but I'm feeling pretty happy about this. Can't wait to put it all together!

    First Gaming PC Build

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:57 PM PST

    Budget (including currency): ~$USD 1500

    Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: New AAA games and others that I have missed throughout the years

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Wanting to upgrade from a MSI laptop with a 1050TI to a new desktop PC. I have put together this build on PC part picker (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4f938J) and really just looking for insurance on the parts.

I know the 5600 and 3080 may be hard to find and dont mind waiting until I get those in stock, but want to order other parts while they go on sale until then.

    • MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard: Want due to the longevity of a B550 for upgrades, additional M.2 in the future and the wifi+bluetooth on this board. Rent in a house where ethernet isnt possible so this has the wifi that I need and also bluetooth for my Bose QC35 headphones I use to play games with.
    • G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory: Wanted to get a 3600 for ryzen as I read it takes advantage of fast RAM. Choosing the CL 18 RGB vs CL 16 for comparable price as I read I can overclock to the 16 and get the RGB.
    • SK hynix Gold P31 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive: Already purchased for $107 on sale. Read it is one of the best M.2 you can buy and got a good deal on the price
    • Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case: Like the look of the case. Seems to have all compatible features with 2 fans and 5 headers for the additional fans I have. I also have an ssd and a hardrive that I plan to install that this can fit.
    • Corsair CXM 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply or the EVGA BQ 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply: Both seem the same so seems like I cant go wrong with either.
    • Cooler Master MasterFan MF120R 59 CFM 120 mm Fans 3-Pack: RGB Fans as I figured why not for my budget allowing it.
    • Monitor: I currently have a 144hz 1080p Sceptre monitor that was featured on a LTT budget monitor video a few months ago. I do plan to upgrade this to a 1440p in a couple of months when I have everything else sorted out

Any comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

    ryzen 5 2600

    rx 580 pulse 4gb

    G.SKILL Ripjaws V 16GB(4x4gb) 2800mhz cl15

    Gigabyte B450M DS3H

    SSD Toshiba TR200 240GB

    HDD HGST 480GB

    Cooler Master Q300L

    Corsair VS550

Since a friend of mine was getting into pc gaming, i sold that for cheap and now i'm going to build a new one. I've been playing diferent games such as Call of Duty Warzone and I need some extra performance.

This is the build i'm going for

On the PcPartPicker site it says that the processor doesn't come with a cooler, but on the reseller's site it says that it comes with the OEM Cooler. It also says "MPK version for integration: To be purchased together with a motherboard. " and it goes for 199.90€, the same as the normal version.

I also have 2 Arctic F14 PWM and a fan header splitter to add to the new build.

Please feel free to leave any tips

Brand new to building, what do you think? Should I wait until prices are lower and parts are available?

    Build Help/Ready:

Ready except for externalities(monitor, mouse, keyboard, chair). Recommendations welcome.

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, in 4k, at a decent framerate. I'm not a serious gamer, but I plan on playing a handful of AAA games and I enjoy modding the shit out games (especially cosmetically).

I will also use the PC for research. I'm a graduate student in statistics. Occasionally, I do computationally intensive tasks on large datasets. This would be more of a feature than a requirement.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    4k, 60fps, High-Ultra Settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

For just PC, $1400 tops, but would prefer to spend less. More set aside for monitors, etc.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    U.S. (Midwest)

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Given the threads I'm seeing today, it looks like now is a bad time to build a PC. Should I start buying anything now, and pray for the missing parts to show up soon? Or just wait until restocks(whenever that is) and do it all at once?

Has the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 GPU Been Discontinued?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:56 PM PST

I have almost all of the other parts for my build and I've been trying to find a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB WINDFORCE 2X Video Card and *no one* has them in stock (except for some really marked up ones on Amazon and Ebay). It looks like they've been out of stock at their MSRP for awhile now. I know COVID has impacted production and distribution of everything everywhere.

Are they still making these or are they just moving forward with the new 3000 models?
