which architecture would scale better! reviewing PS2 and PS1 hardware

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 04:52 PM PDT

both systems are largely heavily focused on graphics processing, the PS3 and PS2 both have a singular CPU core, the PS2 being a MIPS III with SIMD capabilities (so it has more parallel function than a typical CPU). and the PS3 CPU had a two thread PPE in both cases these are the closest you can get to a general purpose CPU

the general purpose processing ends here, the PS2 CPU has two VPUs which do all of the vector and transformation and vertex operations are done by this not the GPU. and the PS3 has 6 SPEs which are like shader core clusters with more independent capability each has their own memory controller and cache

the PS2 GPU is a bit more interesting it has fixed function pixel pipelines that do raster operations in order like texture mapping and pre processing and it has 16 of those and they have a gigantic 2560 bus that connects with its own DRAM.

the PS3 CPU is largely uninteresting because its a slightly modified 7800GTX

which of these two designs do you think scale better with modern technology and nodes and obviously updates?. the PS2 looks so efficient considering the low clock speeds it ran at yet the gaming performance was adequate and it's an insanely parallel machine. the Cell processor only did something similar on the CPU side but there were large bottlenecks with memory compared to the huge bandwidth the PS2 had relative to its performance.

the PS2 had about 48 GBPS of total bandwidth to the buffers and additional 3.2 to the RDRAM, PS3 Cell/RSX had a read bandwidth of 68 GBPS and a write bandwidth of 48.4 GBPS

Potential leak of the Asus-Noctua 3070

    https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/p9jbp3/can_anyone_identify_this_gpu/

Someone found this card at their work. The card pictures may be a potential model of the Asus-Noctua 3070 engineering sample or otherwise.

Looking further into their account we may find:

The OP posted this in German as well, so I'd assume they're from Germany or Austria.
