Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

    I bought a 144 Hz monitor, might've gotten scammed.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 08:38 AM PDT

Hey guys, I bought a PRISM+ X240 144 Hz monitor a few months back from their website. I am now using the 144 Hz screen with another 60 Hz screen of mine (dual monitor setup). After plugging the monitor with a DisplayPort 1.4, setting the refresh rate to 144 Hz on both the Windows display settings and my NVIDIA driver setings, I noticed a lot of ghosting whenever I am scrolling, more than what my 60 Hz screen produces. I used an iPhone to record the scrolling in slow motion 240fps and sure enough, a lot of ghosting showed up in the playback as well. I asked my friends about this issue and they simply brushed it off saying that its fine. But more importantly, I never felt like I was using a 144 Hz screen. I've used 144 Hz screens at LAN cafes but I never had the same buttery experience with my screen. It felt very 60 Hz still. TestUFO registered that my screen is on 144 Hz, as well as every game that allows me to see my refresh rate. So I ignored this issue for the next few months, but yesterday I saw a video comparing 60 Hz vs 144 Hz screens.

The dude brought a window in between the two screens (it was a dual monitor setup like mine) and moved it around, and you could clearly see that there is a very noticeable amount of latency when the window is moved. I tried the same thing on my screens and there were absolute no differences in latency when I moved the windows around. This led me to making this post. Perhaps the manufacturer was able to somehow make the drivers think that I am on 144 Hz but its physical capabilities are still stuck at 60 Hz? I need advice. Is there a better way to test this and what can I do? I don't have any evidence even if I were to bring it up to the merchant.

    To save your time:

    1. I have switched my ports
    2. Unplugged all monitors except my 144 Hz monitor
    3. I can run way above 144 fps, easily
    4. There's no G-sync but there's FreeSync (G-Sync compatible) which I turned on and V-sync is off
    5. I have configured all driver/Windows settings to 144 Hz
    6. Every game detects that I am on 144 Hz
    7. There is no latency option aka 'overdrive' (Fast, Faster, Fastest) on my OSD

Edit: Ghosting apparently happens on VA panels with high refresh rates. Big sad.

Reminder to not use MSI dragon center to update anything.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 03:04 PM PDT

Can confirm like many other people it bricks your bios, and for anyone here cause its too late, check if your mainboard has the option to do a bios flash via usb. Then you are fine and can find more in the manual.

    Edit:

    To clear things up:

    • I actually used MSI Center not dragon center, so to anyone saying that was the problem I guess not. Dragon center is older and I can only expect it to be just as bad.
    • I used a USB with the previous version of the BIOS and used the flash option with the button on the I/O for anyone wondering how exactly I fixed it look into the Manual of your Motherboard.
    • As I flashed with the previous version I can not say if it was the BIOS or MSI Center though im basically 100% sure its MSI center cause it already seems to be a bit of a janky software. So you should be fine updating bios just do it manually.

    Swapping out my boot SSD

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 08:04 AM PDT

So back when I built my pc I used a 250gb SSD as a boot drive. But I recently bought a faster 1 TB SSD and I would now like to use that as a boot drive instead, but still have the exact same setup (no reinstalling windows) as on my old boot drive. How would I go about doing that?

I would imagine the process is something like this:

    1. Mirror the old drive exactly to the new one (which software would I use?)
    2. Boot off the new drive
    3. Wipe old drive so I can still use it as storage

    Thanks

ps: let me know if there is a better place to ask this

    Is this a fake ryzen?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 09:35 AM PDT

So I picked up a ryzen r5 3600 and I'm wondering if the packaging for the tray version is supposed to look like this

I know it doesn't contain a fan but I'm a bit worried since I heard fakes are common within the market as well.

Need help with CPU cooler choice. Ryzen 9 5950x

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 05:19 AM PDT

I know liquid and AIO systems are quite popular but I'd rather not deal with any maintenance. With limited choices I'm currently indecided on what I should run with so far the choices is between:

Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 and Cooler Master MA620M

I recognize the Dark Rock Pro is better performance wise but its RAM clearance is 40mm and the RAM for the build I'd like needs 44mm. MA620M is better visually and surprisingly holds up well performance wise and has much better clearance. But I cant find anything on how well it would work with the AMD 9 5950xIs it worth it to sacrifice minor performance upgrade just for the sake of the RAM I want? I know the Noctura fans are a good choice but brown fans..... seriously? It just wouldn't have any cohesiveness with the scheme I'm going for.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 09:24 AM PDT

    Hello,
So, 4 days ago, i bought a Leven 8Gb DDR3 1600 MHz to my pc, and added it to my (2x4)Gb Avexir blitz series DDR3 1600 MHz that i had for a while now, and ever since i have being having games closing at random times or Random bluescreens
i removed the new ram and tried, then removed the old ram and added the new one alone, and in both cases i had no issue
theoretically the rams should be fully compatible, but i dont understand why am i having this issue, is it some settings that i should tune in the bios ?

    PC crashing

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 07:20 AM PDT

Hey guys, if im posting this in the wrong sub please tell me. I bought a pc around 8 months ago, it was a prebuild pc everything was installed etc. My first crash happend right after the pc arrived, i downloaded the drivers and installed The witcher 3 to see how much fps i would get. I played normally for some time then it crashed, monitor goes green and thats it. After that i installed windows on my own (since the windows that was pre installed on the pc was really clunky). After that it didnt crash again for some time, but it happend again. Its totally random and i cant reproduce it. Yesterday it crashed again and accused cpu fan error, i downloaded msi after burner to check the temps while gaming (running minecraft dungeons) GPU: 60-80, CPU: 60-80. My build: i5 9400f, rx 5600 xt, 16gb ram (pc originally was 8), 500w 80 plus psu

Need help after upgrade (Fractal Define 7, AIO & Ryzen 9 5950X)

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 10:28 AM PDT

I upgraded my PC yesterday, now i'm confused and need some help.

    1. My idle temps are 45°c - 53°c, while setting up a clean win10 and installing programs, it raised up to 75°c. Removing side panels and on the top+ the dust filter and temps where around 41°c, same rpm (600-700~). Is this normal or should i change something? Thermal Paste is Arctic's MX-5.
    2. I got a "9E" code on my board, google search lead me to reddit where people don't know what it means. Any news about it yet?
    3. My front ports aren't working properly. The reset isn't working (guess it's wrongly connected?) and the USB 2.0 are working, the 3.0 ones aren't.

I tried to read it right and thought i did it right. Out of curiosity: does it even matter where i connect it? Could i use the 2 power pins (which are top left) bottom right?

I changed the 140mm case fans for my Arctic P12 PWM. 3 in the front for intake, 1 in the rear for exhaust and the AIO has the same fans, 3x exhaust.

Case fans are connected to the fanhub with 6 ports (not the 3 one) and the AIO is connected to "CPU_FAN" on the board. Mainboard Manual

    Case: Fractal Define 7

Mainboard: ASUS ROG Strix B550-E Gaming

    CPU: Ryzen 9 5950X

Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360

GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 TUF Gaming OC

    RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3600MHz C18

    PSU: Corsair HX850i

    NVMe SSD: Kingston A2000 1TB

I bought the case for noise reasons but sadly it's louder as my old case (Corsair Graphite 780T, no unsulation, open mesh, 7 Arctic P12, 2x Noctua NF-A15 PWM 140 for the CPU cooler).

    What's the most efficient GPU?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I'm looking for something that will heat up my bedroom as little as possible while gaming. I don't care about maxed out settings or how things look as much as I care about efficient performance. I use v-snyc at 60fps and that's just fine for me. I play games like Rocket League, LOL, Fortnite, Call of Duty. Right now I use a GTX970, which runs at about 35% on Rocket League.

It still puts out a decent amount of heat though, so I'm wondering if there have been improvements on that area in newer cards?

VA with higher contrast ratio or IPS with slightly higher brightness and less ghosting?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 01:59 PM PDT

Currently choosing between the ASUS TUF Gaming VG24VQ and the ASUS TUF Gaming VG259Q. I've been needing to upgrade my monitor for years now because of the poor contrast quality and brightness coming from it.

I know VA panels are prone to smearing but the 3000:1 contrast ratio of it compared to the IPS 1000:1 is causing me to have doubts on the vg259q (the IPS panel).

Is a 3000:1 compared to 1000:1 that noticeable? Considering the IPS panel is also 400 peak nit compared to 350 peak nit on the VA panel.

    I know nothing about PC’s

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 01:43 PM PDT

I have to buy a gaming PC for around $1,000 and I have zero idea what to buy because I'm a complete beginner when it comes to PC's. I want one that is already fully built because I'm not capable of learning how to build one plus I don't have the free time to learn that field. I have been searching on Amazon and I just wanted to know if y'all had any suggestions before I go into the buying a pc process completely blind and waste my money , thanks !

Would this fan setup have negative pressure?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 01:41 PM PDT

I was considering getting a cooler master h500p. I'd have the two stock 200mm fans on the front for intake, a 140mm fan in the back for exhaust, and a 360mm radiator on the top for exhaust. Do y'all think the two 200mm fans would be enough, and would this be a good setup?

    Thanks

Does a 1070ti sounds like an upgrade from a 5600xt?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 01:19 PM PDT

So long story short, a miner offered to buy my 5600XT for $450, I basically sell it to him since I only got the card for $300 on launch. That's a $150 profit and now I'm running a used 1070ti which I bought for $120 but I don't know if this is a sidegrade or a upgrade. I will also be getting the 1080ti for $160 from the same seller. Will the 1080ti bottleneck my current cpu?

    Current build
    Ryzen 5 2600 @ 4.0Ghz 1.325v
    Dominator Platinum 16gb 3200mhz
    MSI B450 Pro Carbon
    Inno3D 1070ti

Mobo and cpu upgrade needed budget vs mid term?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 12:49 PM PDT

(Lets start by saying, I have 200 euro but I can still do something back selling the old components)

Basically I fried the mobo while trying to building my fist pc lol, so I'm thinking for an upgrade... can I get some orientation on the components that i need? I'd like to have some budget vs mid term alternative

    Current dead build is:

    ASRock Z77 Pro3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard - asrock-motherboard-z77pro3

    Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor - intel-cpu-bx80637i53570k

Thats the rest, I'm not really planning on upgrading those too since i need the pc running soon (for compatibility):

    psu: Cooler master MWE650 white - cooler-master-mwe-bronze-v2-650-w-80-bronze-certified-atx-power-supply-mpe-6501-acaab-us

gpu: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 Ti 1 GB OC - gigabyte-geforce-gtx-750-ti-2gb-video-card-gv-n75toc-1gi

Now, my budget pick would be:

    AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor - amd-ryzen-5-2600-34ghz-6-core-processor-yd2600bbafbox

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX II ATX AM4 Motherboard - msi-b450-tomahawk-max-ii-atx-am4-motherboard-b450-tomahawk-max-ii

but I still don't know what would be the mid/longer term alternative would be, I'm techblin lmao, I need some instruction from you guys please

side note: i'm not gonna buy from pcpartpicker
