My friend from high school is coming into town and I have a huge surprise for him.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 05:19 AM PDT

So my buddy from high school is coming to see me today. We have not seen each other since 2005. I joined the Army and ended up settling in Texas. He moved away too and went to Michigan. We speak almost every day and play games on Xbox. We have never lost contact. Back in 2005, we were avid PC gamers. Counter Strike (pre source), Tribes (god I remember that being such a fun game), Battlefield 1942.... the list just goes on an on. Well he has come up on some tough times. He got divorced 5 years ago and has been living paycheck to paycheck. I got back into PC gaming in 2019 and I told him about the PC I built for my son, and the one I built for myself. I could hear in his voice as we reminisced about the good old days, and as the conversation went on, he realised that he wouldn't be able to obtain one... Well I told myself that I was going to get him a PC together. The Pandemic did not help this at all but I have finally scraped together the parts and the money to give him what I think is a baller system.

Asus GT 501 - hand me down from my first build. I didn't realize how big the case was when I originally bought it. I was new to the current generation and this case is big enough for custom water cooling. I switched cases but kept this one for him.

Asus B550 Strix WiFi - This is a new part. I didn't have a motherboard I could hand him down. Same with the processor.

Ryzen 7 5800x. I'm using a wraith prism for cooling from my Ryzen 7 3700x

Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 gb kit 3600 mhz (2x16 gb) the extra RAM in the picture is the lighting kit because he always talks about RGB goodness and how much he loves it.

    WD Black M.2 500gb SSD

Seagate barracuda 2 TB 7200 RPM drive

EVGA RTX 2080 Super OC Black - This is another hand me down. I found an RTX 3080Ti for $100 over MSRP so when I upgraded, I saved the 2080 Super for him.

    Corsair RM750x Gold

AOC CQ27G2 1440p 144hz monitor. Found this used in a mom and pop PC shop near me. Got it for cheap.

    Corsair K70 RGB Keyboard

    Corsair Dark Core RGB

I'm going to ship the case to him with the power supply in a seperate box. He is going to take all of the components with him on the plane returning to Michigan. If the shipping on the case is more than I payed for the case I'm probably just going to buy a different case on newegg and ship it to his house before he leaves. Anyways I can't wait to see how he reacts when he gets to my house! I'm sure he's going to be floored.

PC advice for autistic son who is hypersensitive to noise

    Posted: 25 Aug 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Hoping you guys can help. My kid has Aspergers and is hypersensitive to sounds. I spent a ton of money on a fanless pc for him, but it's still too noisy for him.

As a result, I am about to go via the nuclear option.

We will be remodeling where he lives, which is a small annexe in my garden (he doesn't ever leave the house) and I intend to build a small room outside the annexe to store the pc. The idea is that inside his room he merely has a couple of hDMI sockets on the wall and six USB's for mouse/keyboard external stuff he might want to plug. Etc.

The idea is to run tubes through the wall to the external room which is outside, so he can't ever hear anything inside.

From the place where he has his desk to the outside to-be room, there are approx 12 meters.

I am seeking for advice, watch outs and so on for this set up. I assume it's viable?

Current stuff planned is: 6 usb cables. 2 rj45 uptown cat 6a cables, 3 hdmis. Is there anything else I'm missing or I should foresee?

Edit: Thanks so much for so many awesome responses, I went to bed hoping to receive one or two answers and woke up to this! You guys rock! All very good advice. Noise cancelling headphones are a big no-no for him. Thunderbolt Seems the primary way to go. I rather pass few extra cables through, even if I dont need them now, in case down the line they are necessary or something else is released and I can use the cables to switch them with whatever new stuff becomes available. Thanks so so so much!

Finally built my "dream PC" but now lost interest in gaming... Anyone else?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 10:21 AM PDT

4-5 years ago I was playing on my shit laptop running intel integrated graphics and could barely handle league of legends on low settings and I would always wished I had a better pc so I could play games that I wanted. Fast forward to today I finally got myself an RTX 3080, AMD 5600x, water cooled and can finally play everything that I've always wanted but it seems like the 'spark' died out?

I tried GTA 5, fall out, divinity original sins, csgo, valorant, skyrim, and although I had fun, I played each for a few hours then never touched them again. Is it just because I haven't found the right game for me? Or do we gradually lose interest in gaming as we get older?

Scored a deal after "camping" at Best Buy for GPU... now need to build a list

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 12:12 PM PDT

My husband went to our local Best Buy yesterday around 8:30pm with a tent in tow and was #86 in line. This morning when they passed out tickets he got the last ticket for a 3070 ti. By the time he got inside to purchase it, he found out they had accidentally sold the last 3070 ti to someone else - someone who did not get a ticket for that model. The manager quickly acted to make things right and gave my husband the 3070 ti master's edition (worth nearly $1000) for the price of the 3070 ti. We're pretty excited to score this but now need to figure out a parts list for a build and apparently this model is really large and takes up more slots than most. This is a Christmas present gaming pc for our 9yr old son. We already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse. We need everything else now - a bit overwhelmed on where to start. Thanks!

Son plays: COD, Apex Legends, Demon Slayer, Minecraft, Roblox

How much did you pay in total for the parts in your current rig?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2021 08:52 PM PDT

To build off of the GPU-centric discussion topic from yesterday, I thought it would be interesting to hear how much in total people paid to acquire all the parts in their current rigs, excluding monitors and other peripherals. Listing the key highlights of its configuration (e.g. CPU, GPU, etc.) as well would also be good for the discussion.

Since I'm the one proposing the topic it would behoove me to disclose the cost of my current Core i7-10700 (non-K) + GTX 1070 Ti + 32GB DDR4-3200 rig from late 2020, which was $976.44 in total.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 08:54 AM PDT

For some reason I couldn't get out of Bios after that so I had to manually turn my pc off then on, that fixed it but im worried this will become a regular occurrence because from what i've read from searching online it became one, do i need to be worried or is this just some one off occurrence?

Dual monitor arm - Is the Amazon Basics one worth it?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 01:41 PM PDT

    Hi!

So a popular recommendation are the Amazon Basics monitor arms, such as this dual monitor currently priced at 240 CAD. Apparently they're rebranded Ergotron, which seems to have a good reputation.

However there's this one that is way cheaper at 66CAD, and seems to have the exact same features and the good reviews as well (both sit at 4.5 stars).

I want a sturdy dual monitor arm, that won't wobble every time I move, I'll use it for a 27in and a 24in so I don't need something that can hold heavy loads.

Is there a reason why the Amazon basics one is so much more expensive?

    Bought new parts, having trouble

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 01:30 PM PDT

A few days ago my friend upgraded his pc so I bought his old mobo, cpu, and gpu. Everything is fine except every time I boot up the pc, I get a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" the only way to fix this is by rearranging my sata cables. I have to do this everytime I turn it on in order to get to windows. How can I fix this?

VGA output, but no HDMI output

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 12:27 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I just finished building my first PC. When I finished my build I connected it to a TV by HDMI, but I got no output. After that I connected to an old monitor by VGA and I got an output there.

The cable and TV work fine. Is my motherboard deffective?

Edit: I have no GPU, so both outputs are on the motherboard.

Best way to replace headphone jack?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 12:27 PM PDT

My rear headphone jack has an issue where the left side is way quieter than the right side. I tried changing the balance settings and making the left louder than the right but this lowers the overall volume significantly. Are there any PCIe cards that would work that would have similar sound quality?

Replacement for Nvidia GeForce GT 420 graphics card or replacement fan?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 08:34 AM PDT

I have a pretty old HP desktop (HP Pavilion Elite HPE) which has a Nvidia GeForce GT 420 graphics card. The graphics card seems to be ok but the fan has become very noisy at higher speeds. I did take it out, clean out the dust etc and look to see if it could be oiled but I wasn't able to access the bearing to do so. (I did take the fan apart but its sealed on both sides).

I am monitoring the heat of the gpu and fan speed and it is currently sitting at 50°C and fan speed is 12% when I watch a video on youtube it goes up to about 69°C and the fan might go a couple of percent faster so 13 - 15 % to cool it down, if the fan goes faster than about 18% it gets noisier and at 25% + it sounds a bit grindy.

I do not do any gaming but do do some photo and video editing.

I have looked to see if I can get a replacement fan for this graphics card but I'm not seeing anything suitable. This is the exact type of fan that is on my graphics card https://www.pchub.com/protechnic-magic-mba4412hf-a09-server-blower-fan-095-0347-000dc-12v-024a-heatsink-fan-p136065

However its the only place I found it and its in the US so would cost £35 to have it shipped to me in 30 days! I also can't unplug the power supply of the fan I have from the graphics card as its stuck in fast.

I am looking for advice on a low profile graphics card with a fan ( I don't think the heat sinks cards would be enough due to the position of the tower unit). Is there anything which I could replace this old graphics card with I don't really have much to spend under £100. Alternatively if you know of a replacement fan I could use on this this current graphics card it would need a heat sink as well but to remain low profile as I don't have a lot of room in there!

Here are some cards I've been looking at:

Will a 3060ti be too powerful for my CPU?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2021 07:24 PM PDT

Looking to upgrade my 5 year old PC from a 1060 to a 3060ti GPU. However I'm concerned about wasting money if my i5-6500k can't keep up with the GPU.

I will be aiming for roughly 100fps or at least 60fps at higher graphics on chunky games such as battlefield. Specifically upgrading to be able to run BF 2042 and other newer games which are becoming more demanding.

If I also need to upgrade my CPU, I'd rather not spend more than $1500 AUD on both the CPU and GPU combined. Which is quite challenging cause the 3060ti will cost me $1300.

Alternatively I could get a 3060 for $200 less to compensate for the CPU upgrade, but not sure if that's not as good as a 3060ti on its own….

I've never been the best with PC parts, and so asking for advice to what the best choice would be to improve the frame rate and/or graphics of my games.

    Other PC specs if interested:

GPU: nvidia GTX 1060 CPU: i5-6500 RAM: 16gb Motherboard: GA-B150M-HD3 2tb HDD 100gb SSD Power: Be Quiet 600W (I think)

Edit: Based on online recommendations, thinking of upgrading to i5-10600K

Edit 2: Have decided to upgrade CPU (i5 6500 to i5 11400) first with current 1060 GPU, along with compatible motherboard. Will most likely upgrade to a 3060ti or AMD 6700 XT later on in the year.

Thank you for the help, every comment was quite helpful, and feel free to continue to discuss.

Does MSI B450i Mini ITX Gaming Plus AC motherboard support all 4 SATA cable slots IF M2 is plugged in?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 12:03 PM PDT

I have plans to buy powerful M2 SSD. Problem is I already have 3 regular SATA cables in use out of 4 and I have this distant memory that I read somewhere that if you plug M2 then two of your SATA slots would not work.

However right now I can't find that information anywhere. if it doesn't say anything it would by default mean that all 4 sata's work with the m2 plugged in.

Anyone can check this for me?

    Help with Cleaning Out PC

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 11:54 AM PDT

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out regarding the general tools I should use to clean out my PC safely? To be honest it's been a while since I first assembled it and it's getting pretty dusty - would I have to do things like disassembling my motherboard parts or would simply blowing compressed air suffice?

Also I realised recently that only one of my two ram sticks was showing up (8gb as opposed to 16gb) - if say one of them was simply just not put in correctly when I built my pc for the first time would reseating both of them during the cleaning process affect the operating system or software by any chance? It's just I saw some video about having to be careful when changing RAM around and was a bit cautious. Thanks!
