    Simple Questions - June 28, 2021

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

The current state of the PC components market - A message from your mod team

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:06 PM PDT

    Howdy folks,

As you may or may not be aware, the PC component market is reeling from a multitude of factors. Graphics Cards are extremely hard to come by, selling out instantly even at inflated prices and being resold on the second hand market for many times their original retail price. However the issues run deeper than this with a combination of Covid-19, cryptocurrency mining, tariffs, production limitations and other supply and demand factors coinciding to mean that finding graphics cards, CPUs and some other components has become incredibly frustrating.

We all want to build great PCs, and right now it's hard and that sucks.

We ask for your help during these shortages by requesting that you pay mind to the following:

    • We cannot predict when this situation will ease or end. No one has a crystal ball.

    • Don't ask us how to buy a GPU. You can read about others' experiences and see if you can emulate them with the time and skills you have available, but no-one has an easy answer. People are finding GPUs at retail and patience is one of the primary methods that yields rewards.

    • Some people might decide to use bots to assist them in making a purchase. On /r/buildapc, we do not condone the discussion, recommendation or advertisement of bots.

    • Please don't get scammed. This is a fraught market and fraudsters will exploit your desire to buy a GPU. If a product is being sold by a third party below market price in all probability it is bait for a scam. Never send money by bank transfer, Paypal Friends & Family, or strange cash apps you've not heard of until your seller suggests them. Engage in any non-retail transaction with extreme caution. Ensure any payments you make are covered by robust buyer protection. We will not permit topics such as 'Is this a scam?' or 'Did I get scammed?'

    • Do not offer to sell or ask to buy components in this subreddit or via direct message. Posts will be removed and posters banned.

    • Be kind to one another. Some people may choose to pay inflated prices. Other people may mine with their GPUs. Neither of those make abuse or harassment acceptable and we will take action against breaches of our rules concerning civility.

In the meantime there are ways to build a PC now despite the GPU shortage:

You could build a stop-gap system with graphics output integrated into the CPU or search for cheaper older used cards such as the AMD RX480/570/580 or Nvidia GTX 970/1060. Cards with less than 4GB VRAM are no longer optimal for mining and so may be more readily available. There are many possible solutions, and we're sure the buildapc community can help you if you need a PC right now and can't wait for supply to catch up to demand.

To keep the rest of the subreddit on topic, please keep discussion of the GPU shortages, retail frustrations, etc. to this thread only. Other submissions will be removed.

Is there such a thing as a "good" gaming chair?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:03 AM PDT

My kid is 12, loves gaming, is getting into streaming and sees all of his heroes with a racing styled gaming chair. Of course, he now wants one. Which is...fine. I know the general consensus is that they're trash, but are there any good ones? Or some that are better than others? He's 12, so the chair being smallish or not having enough seat cushion for a 250lb man are not major concerns. I'm more interested in upholstery durability and general build quality. Any recs are greatly appreciated.

I just built my first PC and I feel like God

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I just created "life" from nothing. It's a great feeling! Just thought I'd share.

Edit: wow this blew up! Just to add, I have built a PC before (my one), but my friend did 80% of the work. This time I did 100%! It will be a birthday present to someone in my family.

Edit2: okay okay, it's a geforce GT 1030 2gb GDDR5. I know she won't be playing AAA titles for now.

Looking to build a PC for school and hobby for under $250

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:20 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm looking to build a computer to upgrade or replace my current one. It's a Lenovo ThinkCentre M81 with 8gb of ram, Intel i5 2400 cpu, I think it's integrated gpu maybe. Also has a 2 tb HDD that I'm pretty sure is failing. My tower case also has a stray electric current coming from somewhere that causes me to feel an electric current when I touch certain areas (this doesn't happen everyday). However, I'm wanting to build a PC that is capable of booting up quickly and loading images quickly. Furthermore, I need to have at least 2tb of hard disk storage, because of record management and bulk photo downloads. It also needs to be able to handle multiple applications and browsers running at once. I would like to possibly have an SSD to run the OS and then a separate HDD for storage? Is that possible?

    Thank you all.

EDIT: This PC will not be used for Gaming purposes

Should I buy a prebuilt or build a pc?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:37 AM PDT

Completely new to the pc community and I hear a lot of talk about price gouging and what not. With my next paycheck I'm planning on about $1200-$1300 being used for my new pc. Should I look for a good prebuilt or try and buy parts and build it myself? Either way I'd like to slowly upgrade some parts later on. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    Sapphire GPUs

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:47 AM PDT

Kind of a rookie to buying Sapphire cards, but it seems like the only place to find them are Newegg?? Is there some secret site other than Newegg to potentially find new Sapphire cards?

So I happen to have 2 cooling pastes because I didn't realize my cooler would already come with one, so now I'm stuck on which one I should use. I tried googling but I couldn't find much info

    Built a PC in 2021!

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:57 PM PDT

I was trying to build something budget for my SO to play FFXIV with me. I thought I had an old gtx 750ti laying around... I did not. Parts were not exactly easy to find at MSRP so intent to build a SUPER budget pc turned into a modest mid-rangey new PC, here's the parts list.

    [PCPartPicker Part List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gCzhHz)

    **CPU** | [AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor]

The only 3100 I found at the time was also $200. So I bought this for $200 instead.

**CPU Cooler** | [Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler]

I wasn't sure how appropriate the stock cooler would be for a 6 core processor.

**Motherboard** | [Asus TUF GAMING B550-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard]

I wanted a wi-fi motherboard (I just routed all my cables and will be too lazy to add another ethernet cable through walls anytime soon) and this was at a good price imo.

    **Memory** | [G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory]

I tried to find a good price/speed ratio and I think this was it.

**Storage** | [Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive]

I'm so excited. Last time I built a PC NVME drives weren't even a thing.

**Video Card** | [MSI GeForce GTX 970 4 GB GAMING Video Card]

Elephant in the room. I'm hoping to get a 3060/70/80 by the end of the year. I have a 970 in my current PC and honestly it crushes every game I play. I found this MSI 970 on Facebook marketplace for $200.

**Case** | [Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case]

I was going to buy the Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh, but Amazon did not have any in stock. I like this Corsair case a lot though!

**Power Supply** | [Corsair RM (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply]

might be overkill, but I appreciate the extra headroom. My PC is quiet and cool! Also might come in handy if I do get a 30 series or even 40 series card in the future.

My TV has HDMI 2.1 is there a specific type of HDMI that I need on my gaming PC when I buy one?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:40 PM PDT

Do you choose a Motherboard using ATX factor and socket or using a chipset?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:51 AM PDT

Title. Google says "Chipset determines expansion options, part compatibility", but why the hell would you choose or care about a Chipset? If motherboard has these RAM and socket and PCIe slots, then they are compatible, because who would make a motherboard with incompatible slots?

So what is chipset really? Why could CPU socket and ATX factor not be enough?

    TIA.

Parting out my first PC build can I get some advice?

I'm looking to build my first PC. I am mainly looking to see if anyone has some advice on how to make it better without spending much more or potentially less. The computer will be used for Music production, Gaming, and general use. Also if anyone can confirm if this will all physically fit together and in the case that would also be helpful cause I don't know where to look for that. I've been using PC part picker to find my parts while using YouTube channels Jay's two cents and linus tech tips to do research. All help will be appreciated

FYI in case anyone else has the same issue with MSi Z490I mobo

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:15 PM PDT

Short story, tried to update BIOS from 7C77v16 to 7C77v18, didn't touch anything else, no hw changes, everything went fine during the update until the reboot, CPU light on, no display, BRICKED.

Already tried to "clear the CMOS", disconnected the battery, change RAM, PSU, double checked the CPU and CPU pins, SSD, etc.

The last attempt was to find the BIOS chip to flash another version but wasn't able to, seems the chip is hidden, so is not so easy to reach it with the USB programmer.

I'm trying to reach MSI and see if my warranty is still valid.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:07 PM PDT

I was thinking of getting the B550-A motherboard as its on sale right now but I have a question about the storage. On my old motherboard I have an NVME SSD and a 2 TB HDD connected, if I connect the SSD and HDD straight to the new mobo will it work/boot like normal or will I have to do another step for it to work/boot?

    Windows 11 + Ryzen 7 1700

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:08 AM PDT

I currently have a Ryzen 7 1700, only to find out today that it won't be supported on Windows 11. I however have TPM 2.0 enabled and working, so is that the only issue with compatibility for Windows 11? Or do I actually need a supported processor from Microsoft's list?

I don't mind upgrading to a 3600 or 3300x if needed, but my second question would be how long will the 4 core 3300x last me in terms of future proofing? It's cheaper and currently in stock, unlike the 3600, with about the same performance just with less cores it seems.

    Thanks a lot!

    Seeking RAM advice (5+years assumed)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:45 PM PDT

So I'm building a gaming/everyday use PC that I plan to stick with for the next 5 years or so

For information sake my prior build was using these

    Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS Latency 10 Timing 10-10-10-27

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007TG8QRW?pf_rd_r=FRV41SAWZE2SBA714VJE&pf_rd_p=5ae2c7f8-e0c6-4f35-9071-dc3240e894a8&pd_rd_r=c35af41b-3b4b-4644-9746-e1b057385a12&pd_rd_w=Th8AJ&pd_rd_wg=IVsDD&ref_=pd_gw_unk

    My current build I'm considering

    Crucial Ballistix 3600 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit 2x 8gb OR 2x 16GB Latency 16 Timing 16-18-18-38

    https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Ballistix-Desktop-Gaming-BL2K16G36C16U4B/dp/B083TRXZ98

The old build is using 15-2500k with the corair and I can easily hit 80%+ load on both with my normal habits if i boot up a modest (read older or small) games without killing whatever else i'm up to and things start to really chug at that point if I switch what i'm focusing on, while it evens out to decent after abit, a more demanding game i'm pretty much having to close everything BUT the game since my other stuff can eat up 50-70% (so 8-11ish GBs of ram)

So I was looking at motherboards for my build and surprised myself getting a nice z490 mini itx board for way way under its normal price used not bruised. (also i5- 10600k for reference)

Now I started by planning to get 2x 8gb sticks and maybe another 2 if things end up more demanding in the next few years BUT the mini board only has 2 slots for ram so that conservative plan won't work. i have to choose now if i'm ending up with 16 or 32 long run since it'd be a wasteful to upgrade midway.

IF i was judging by my current ram i would jump to 32 gb for sure because its just barely cutting it at 16.

That said I understand that better ram can use less of its potential to accomplish the same task and the new ram (and well everything else) is much stronger then the old one. So I'm asking considering I don't care to drop everything else when I want to play a game and its not unusual for me to use 10gb of ram in general use on the old build would you all think I'd be ok with 16gb of stronger ram or should I just bite the bullet, grab the 32 gb and be done with it

    M.2 vs. NVMe

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:35 PM PDT

I don't mean to be political but what the fuck is the difference between an M.2 and an NVMe and which would be better for a MSI x570 gaming plus mobo with an AMD R9 5900X? I know than NVMe is faster but idk if its compatible because of the pins being different. The mobo documentation only says M.2 so it's been unhelpful so far.

Can a high ambient temperature kill a PC?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:49 AM PDT

I know that ambient temperature isn't ever going to damage a CPU or GPU, but what about the motherboard? What about anything else?

The reason I ask is because the room I have my PC in is it separated from the main house, and has very poor air conditioning. With this unprecedented heat wave, the temperatures are going to 44C/111f.

Snapped on it, barely could boot into windows with lots of BSOD and then browser tab crash like mad, then I ran a memtest86 and gave me so much error, guess I will return?
