This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Windows 11 requires TPM 1.2, are people with older custom-built PCs screwed?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 03:27 AM PDT

I have a PC I built in 2015, with near top of the line consumer components for the time. The motherboard is the MSI Z97-GD65 Gaming and it has a TPM header, so I technically could just plug in a TPM module and install Windows 11.

The issue is, I didn't buy it at the time..no build guide ever suggested buyers they would need one (to be honest, at the time I don't think I even knew that it was a thing), and later on PCs started to come with TPM built right in the CPU or the motherboard so you didn't really need to bother. But..what about people like me? I can't find TPM modules on the market at all, and even if I could I doubt I could still find one compatible with a Z97 board.

I suspect thousands of users who built a PC 4 or 5 years ago and haven't upgraded yet will have the same issue. Most people don't even know what TPM is, and even if you do you might realize you are in my same situation and be unable to install it.

So..am I out of options? With the current market I really can't afford to upgrade (because I would have to buy new RAM, new CPU, new cooler) and the TPM module which was supposed to be a cheap 20$ option for people who needed bitlocker or whatever, is now basically unavailable on the market, so no Windows 11 for me?

Edit: further consideration about casual users. I checked my parent's PC, a prebuilt from 2014..it's still completely usable thanks to the quad core and the 8GB of RAM. It doesn't have TPM enabled, which might mean it's either disabled in the BIOS, or it's missing from the mobo completely.

When you use the Windows 11 compatibility checker, the message says the PC isn't compatible and the "learn more" button links you to Microsoft website, where the suggestion is "Buy a new PC" with a link to their own Microsoft store, selling Surface PCs. If the webpage stays about the same until launch, millions of users (because millions of people have PCs from before 2015, where TPM is disabled by default or missing completely) will see a notification that their PC "isn't good enough" and will be redirected to Microsoft's own store to buy a new product. This feels really scummy.

Edit 2: The current list of Intel supported CPUs (here's the AMD list) includes only Intel 8th gen or above. If this list is final (which we don't know yet) it might look like a lot of people will be left out.

Edit 3: Some users have pointed out that TPM might be a quite controversial topic, especially for those of you who care about DRM and the freedom to use your hardware however you like. Thanks to u/Marco-YES for doing a quick breakdown of the criticalities here. You can find further resources for reading about the topic in his comment. Basically, a point of contention would be if we really need a TPM requirement at all and whether it's actually a bad thing for consumers.

Edit 4: A lot of people with newer systems got the "incompatible" message when running the utility (which can be downloaded here). To check if TPM is the issue, press Start and type "tpm.msc" and it will tell you what version you have if it's there at all. You need at least version 1.2 according to current information. Additionally, you can type "System information" and in the main tab of the window that opens up you can check whether Secure Boot is enabled.

Both of these options might be off by default so you'll need to go into the UEFI/BIOS and turn them on. This will likely solve the incompatibility message for those with newer systems.

I built my first PC for my brother and it posted on the first try!

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 01:39 PM PDT

After casually browsing this sub for months as well as years of finnicky Windows experiences, I figured I would run into countless issues and spend hours troubleshooting, but no. It actually just worked, we were up and running 15 minutes after first boot.

This may be a pointless post, but I want to say it's actually much easier than it looks. You're literally just plugging things into each other and hoping the quality control folks didn't miss a faulty part. Awesome man, he's really happy.

My pc headphone jack is fucked, do I have to buy a new motherboard to fix?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:12 PM PDT

Like I said above, the headphone jack on my pc is trashed. While i had headphones in, the wire got caught on the wheel of my chair, when I moved the chair, the headphones were violently ripped from the jack. Now, the sound is messed up. How can I fix this?

Some information on Windows 11 requirements, CPU support list, TPM and Secure Boot

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 03:19 AM PDT

EDIT: Based on comments, some additional information included. Also shortened the text a bit for a faster read.

The reason why a lot of these requirements are being put in place is that Windows 11 is getting rid of some old standards.

    Release

Windows 11 is really just an update for Windows 10. However, it is a major one.

Windows 11 has different requirements than Windows 10 and not all of them are tied to performance. Yes, some Windows 10 users will not be able to update their system to Windows 11, even if they would have sufficient performance to run it. That is why there is now a date for the end of support of Windows 10.

Information provided in this post may not be complete and anything can change before the actual release. Although it is planned for the end of 2021, it's only when Microsoft plans to start releasing the updates to Windows 10 users. Most will actually get it in 2022. It is not clear whether Windows 11 will be available as in ISO and through OEMs in 2021, or some time in 2022.

Windows Insiders will be able to try Windows 11 very soon, it might be available as soon as next week. You can register to become a Windows Insider.

    Direct X

Windows 11 requires a DirectX 12 GPU with WDDM 2.0 support. It's easy enough to check which DX your GPU supports. WDDM support is something you'll find in the driver documentation.

This requirement will be a problem for plenty of budget low-end systems with very old cards and iGPUs.

    TPM and Secure Boot

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) and Secure Boot. It's not enough to just have these technologies, they need to be enabled in BIOS.

Secure Boot may require you to enable a password to enter the BIOS and switch Secure Boot to "standard" mode (if you see such option in the BIOS). Other than that, it's as simple as turning it on. Your system also needs to be installed on a GPT partition, not MBR.

Although TPM 2.0 is listed as a requirement, TPM 1.2 was stated by Microsoft to be supported as well (see the end of this post for more info). TPM is typically provided by the CPU.

Intel CPUs implement TPM 2.0 in their Intel Trusted Platform, also called Intel Platform Trust Technology. In the BIOS, this may be called "PTT".

AMD CPUs implement TPM 2.0 in their Firmware Trusted Platform Module. In the BIOS, this will usually be called fTPM

If your hardware doesn't support TPM 2.0 (or 1.2), there's still the possibility of adding a TPM module to your motherboard. However, that may not be viable for a number of reasons. A motherboard needs to have a TPM header. To my knowledge, this is not a standard header and as such, you need a module specifically for your brand of motherboard. Even though they're usually inexpensive, stock may be limited and they're also not very common.

    CPU support

CPU support list has shrunk considerably for Windows 11, compared to Windows 10. It is not yet clear how this will affect users, but in the past, it was still possible to run Windows 10 on CPUs that were not on the support list. Microsoft's official system requirements now link to a CPU support list, which you can find in the links below.

EDIT: As pointed out in the comments, it is confirmed that the CPU support list applies to OEMs and does not mean older CPUs will not be supported by the system, as long as you fulfill other requirements (TPM, Secure Boot)

EDIT 2: On the page linked in the previous EDIT, it was stated that TPM 1.2 is supported. However, the page has since been edited and it now only mentions TPM 2.0. There's also no mention of TPM 1.2 in this PDF document I'll update the post again once there's some clarification.

Before you go out and buy a TPM 2.0 module, check whether your BIOS already has a Firmware based TPM

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 03:17 PM PDT

Currently, Windows 11 will require TPM 2.0 in order be installed or upgraded to, this may be something Microsoft change before release, but right now, it looks like TPM 2.0 will be a requirement, unless you modify the Windows 11 installer.

There are two types of TPM solutions, hardware based modules, such as these that plug into your motherboard and Firmware based TPM solutions, such as AMD's fTPM and Intel's Platform Trust Technology (PPT)

I'm seeing a lot of bad advice on this sub, with users telling people with relatively modern systems to go out and buy those hardware TPM 2.0 modules, this is likely completely unnecessary and just a waste of money, especially as hardware TPM 2.0 modules are currently getting scalped due to high demand since the Windows 11 announcement.

If you have a Ryzen (or newer) or Skylake (or newer) system, chances are your motherboard does have some type of Firmware based TPM solution, so no purchase necessary.

You may want to check you have the latest BIOS for your system before you proceed.

If you are using an AMD platform, look for something called AMD fTPM or similar, this can generally be found under the 'Security', 'Trusted Computing' or 'Advanced CPU settings' in most BIOSes.

If you are using an Intel platform, look for something called Intel IPT/PPT (Platform Trust Technology) or similar, this can generally be found under the 'Security', 'Trusted Computing' or 'Advanced CPU settings' in most BIOSes.

If your BIOS asks whether to select a dedicated TPM (sometimes called dTPM) or firmware TPM (fTPM), select fTPM.

Once you've done this, press the Windows Key + R and type "tpm.msc" and if you see something like this and it says version 2.0, you are in business.

I really can't be any more specific than that, as BIOSes can vary so much between manufacturers and generations.

But please, before you rush out and buy a hardware TPM 2.0 module, do check if your current system already has support for a firmware based TPM solution.

I got a i9 9900k before I knew that it's chipset is going to be obsolete, am I screwed?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 05:07 AM PDT

    Context:

This is my second build, but haven't built a PC since 2017. I was planning on buying a i9 10850k, then did a little more research and found this article talking about the best CPU to pair with a rtx 3080. And at 1440p resolution it faired second best, right behind a 10900k, which is way out of my budget. I was still on the fence and could very much still switch to amd, but then there was a prime day sale for the 9900k and got it for $299, $100 cheaper than normal retail.

Now I find out from more research that the chipset is becoming obsolete. Is this a problem for me?

I built my rig just over 2 years ago and choosing a Vega64 was the worse thing I could have done, what can I do?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 02:16 PM PDT

I originally posted here just over 2 years ago to get help with my build. At the time I was on the fence of a Vega64 vs a GTX1080 and I chose the Vega64 (RedDevil).

It's honestly been a nightmare since day 1 and I can't even replace it with a new gen card because there is literally nothing to buy.

    • It's loud
    • It's hot
    • Drivers are awful and crash constantly

I've followed every single guide on undervolting, repasting and replacing the thermal pads. This card just plain fucking sucks. It doesn't work out of the box and every post I come across says the same thing:

This card works best when you undervolt it

I just want my damn card to work.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can make this card run cool and perform half way decent?

    • 1015mv (which is low as hell)
    • 1580mhz core
    • 50% power
    • Fans at 55-65% (which is audible)
    • Repasted with MX-4 and pads are Artic APT2560
    • Case has excellent airflow with good quality Noctua fans

Help building a PC for my wife

I liked the Idea of RGB on components, but haven't really played with it before. The PC is mostly gonna be a work/ internet machine, with maybe some jack-box gaming, but that's about it, so I figured onboard graphics should be fine. She has had a couple hand me down Dell's so I wanted something a bit more sleek, and much faster. Am I missing anything, your help would be much appreciated.

    350-500$ Monitor: 1080p or 1440p (RTX 3080 and possible fps-loss)

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 03:18 PM PDT

    Good day,

ive got my new setup today but havent picked a monitor yet (running at ol' Benq XL2411Z for now).

    The setup is:

    • Intel Core i9-10900K
    • MSI MEG Z490 ACE
    • G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz 32 GB
    • Asus TUF GeForce RTX 3080

So, like mentioned before I still can't figure out whats gonna fit better for me:

    27" 1440p ~165Hz or 24-25" 240Hz.

IPS over TN, of that I'm sure. But still need your help.

The thing is, im gonna use the monitor mostly while gaming (Warzone, Tarkov, fast paced shooters etc.) and tbh im little bit scared of fps-loss with higher resolutions (1440p).

FPS is the main factor here. But, should I be worried bout FPS at all while running on RTX 3080? How much more FPS would be possibly consumed at 1440p vs 1080p?

    My main pick for the moment is 240Hz 24,5" 1080p: DELL Alienware AW2521HFLA 25" 1920x1080px IPS 240Hz 1 ms

    Advice on gaming pc build

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 12:48 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

    I've ordered this new pc with a 3060 graphics card;

    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/scan-gamer-rtx-intel-core-i5-10400f-16gb-ddr4-12gb-evga-rtx-3060-1tb-m2-ssd-win-10-see-info

Instead of a monitor I'll be using an Optoma 340 UHD 35 projector It can display HD at 240hz and 4K at 60hz.

I'm planning to upgrade the graphics card when the market goes back to normal, so maybe in a couple of years!

Do you think that I am okay with the i510400F and intel H410 motherboard, or will that cause significant problems for upgrading in the future? The company is waiting for the next shipment of 3060s to come in before they build the pc, so I might still have time to ask them to upgrade the processor and motherboard if necessary.

Also, if I do ask for an upgrade would I also need to get water cooling to go with it?

I'm not sure if this fails the prebuilt pc rule, if it does I'll understand if the mods take it down.

    Thank you.

    Book recommendation for building pc?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 02:18 PM PDT

It's my first time building a pc, and I'm doing it with my 11 year old son. I would love to have a good book with pictures and explanations on how to assemble. Any recommendations? Build is nothing unusual. Thanks!
