People have stopped camping at MicroCenter Posted: 23 Jun 2021 04:10 AM PDT I drive past a MicroCenter at 6:00 a.m. on my way to work every single day. Yesterday and today were the first two days in months without tents out front. GPU demand is leveling off. I hope prices start coming down. [link] [comments]
RTX 3060 worth $450 right now? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 11:03 AM PDT I got selected for a shuffle at a local store with an offer to buy an EVGA RTX 3060 XC Gaming for around $450 and need to decide by the end of the day or they pass it on to someone else. Will this card be good enough to last for a few years until I want to upgrade? I want something to play next gen games at 1080p and 1440p at a good framerate and with more advanced features available like ray tracing and DLSS. I've looked at reviews and benchmarks for 3060 online and everyone seems pretty underwhelmed with it so I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. I really wanted to get a 3080 or better this year for games in 4K but it looks like I might have to settle now with the state of the market. Would you buy this card at this price or will it be showing it's age within a year or two? How does it stack up against next gen consoles to give me a general idea of performance? Is it worse than a PS5? Thanks! [link] [comments]
PC shows no sign of power, after working fine Posted: 23 Jun 2021 02:02 PM PDT Hi, I have recently built a new pc and has been working fine for some time now without any issues. After fitting a new mobo cable, the computer worked fine for hours of gaming. But then the next day I pressed the on button and nothing happened, there are also no signs of power whatsoever - no LEDs that are normally illuminated and no fans spin etc. Completely dead it seems. I've tried paper clip test on psu and it turned on to power the water pump (only item connected for test), tried replacing cmos battery and reset cmos. No signs of water loop leaks. Tried removing ram sticks and using different slots but still no progress. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to troubleshoot to find the source of the issue? Setting up a desktop without a desk -- Using it like a laptop Posted: 23 Jun 2021 11:44 AM PDT TL;DR: I want tips about how to use a desktop computer with a laptop form factor for the monitor and keyboard. I suspect if I want to do this, I will have to build it myself. I have always used gaming laptops. I significantly prefer the form factor, as it allows me to use my computer on the couch. I play games on the couch too. I find that I prefer this to desks because sitting at a desk gives me a headache over time. I think this is due to the fact I can't adjust the monitor to a more comfortable position as easily as I can with a laptop on my legs. When using a static monitor, I think I hold my head too rigid, which gives me a headache. However, using a gaming laptop has problems. There are the obvious concerns about a bad cost to performance ratio compared to desktops. On top of these, the gaming laptop straight up makes me hot. The surface gets hot, the air vents get hot, etc. Additionally, gaming laptops just don't last as long as a gaming desktop. Ports and parts fail and they are difficult or impossible to repair or replace. I would like to use a desktop computer like I use my laptop. I would like something like a lapdock, but they are tiny because they are built for phones. I would want something lapdock with a high refresh rate monitor and a good keyboard (preferably with a num pad). I am under the impression that no one manufactures things like this, so I was wondering if anyone tried anything like this as a DIY project. My main concern is how to incorporate the monitor. My first instinct is to essentially take a somewhat thick laptop chassis with a 15 or 17 inch high refresh rate monitor built in and get a controller board. A 1080p or 1440p would work well here. Then I cut open the keyboard area and mount a keyboard. I would probably want a lower travel keyboard so that I could close the lid properly. Then I wire up the webcam to USB (as it uses the same wire interface) and the microphone (however that works). Then I can take all that, maybe some nice internal speakers (as I don't have a place for external), put that all in a USB-C hub in the chassis, and have one cable going out to my desktop. Ideally, I would also have a couple USB-A ports around or inside the device so I can plug in USB sticks without having to get up and go to the desktop. I might want an HDMI out as well, as I do use a portable second monitor on my couch, but this could just as easily be plugged directly in to the computer. There are a few things that I am not sure of with this approach. First of all, I don't really know what to get with LCD controller boards. I am concerned that an LCD controller board might not want to run the monitor at a high refresh rate or at the appropriate brightness. I hate buying things without knowing if they will work or not. Any recommendations for panel-controller combos that are known to be good would be nice. Second, I am not sure people make motherboards or graphics cards with USB-C outputs that carry enough power for the monitor. My second thought is that monitors often have USB hub capabilities. Perhaps there is a portable high refresh rate monitor with similar features. In this case, I would mount such a portable monitor on a hinge with the keyboard and such plugged in to it. There are many USB-C monitors, but I am not too familiar with their capabilities because my current laptop does not support display over USB-C. The downside would be that I would have to figure out how to mount the monitor, essentially build the case. This approach sounds harder because I don't have any experience or tools to build a case like this. Any thoughts on this project? Are either of these approaches good? Am I missing something? Whenever I bring this up, people present a few alternative solutions. There are several things I have tried, but I find them to not work well for me or I found unreliable.

Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:10 PM PDT Hi guys, I've been using my GTX1070 for a while now and I've just noticed some weird ooze behind the backplate. What is it actually like switching from Intel to AMD? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 12:59 PM PDT So to explain the title: I am planning on building a new PC and I'm going to be using one of the new CPUs with Zen 3 (specifically, either the X5950 or the X5900) and I'm curious about one thing: what was it like swapping from Intel to AMD? I have used Intel based computers for most of my life and now that I'm swapping to AMD; I'm curious as to how different it is. I want to know about anything people had to do differently when they swapped, If they had problems with certain games (I would also like to know which games those were), Did certain programs not work, was their any issues that they ran into that were specifically caused by AMD, etc. [link] [comments]

Upgrade HP Elitedesk 800 G1 for sister to play basic games Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:11 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm fairly new to this subreddit but have a little bit of experience with putting together desktops. I may soon be given an old Elitedesk from a friend who no longer needs it, and my sister has been looking to upgrade her dinosaur of a pc for a good few months now. The Elitedesk comes with a 4th gen core i5 processor, 6 gb of RAM, and a 500gb hard drive. I would like to slowly upgrade this desktop to let her play games like Minecraft, Undertale, Roblox, CS:GO etc. Nothing too demanding. What are some specific upgrades that I could make, as I am not sure of the compatibility of parts for this desktop system. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Also: Definitely will be waiting for gpu prices to drop before looking for anything, but I'm thinking something like a 1650. [link] [comments]
Planning on upgrading PC after 6 years (Intel Core i3-10105F) Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:51 PM PDT My current build is:
It's kind of old, but honestly, it still works very good (The SSD is the real MVP, it revived my pc when I bought it), I'm very satisfied with the performance it has given me through 6 years, but I think it's time to upgrade it. I'm on a budget, so I was thinking about buying:
I think the jump between my current CPU and the new one is very big, (here's the comparison), but I want to know if these are good options, specially the motherboard. Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
PC "Died" after being left on standby Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:45 PM PDT Hi all. Sorry if there's any poor formatting I'm having to write this from my phone. I've had a PC I built for around 2 years. No issues. The other day I left it on standby for 2 days or so without realising. Then when I went to turn it on no response. No fan spin, no beep, only led that is on is an orange one around the mobo. I do get a little click from the power supply when I try to turn it on for the first time after unplugging it and plugging it back in. PC Specs - Ryzen 5 2600 Asus Prime b450 plus GTX 1060 6gb 2x 8gb Hyperx Fury I have tried - Resetting CMOS Reseating RAM, each tested individually New CPU fan and heatsink Rebuilding entire PC Tried with just mobo, 1x ram stick, cpu, boot drive. None of these above steps have worked. So I think I've narrowed it down to CPU, PSU, MOBO. I'm at a loss for what to do now and don't currently want to replace each part. Any suggestions would be much appreciate! [link] [comments]
Help with case fan setup for Corsair 4000D Airflow Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:39 PM PDT Hello there! So I've been planning on upgrading my case to a Corsair 4000D Airflow and will buy some fans with it. The part where I'm currently a bit lost is if I should go for static pressure or airflow fans. As I've understood the static fans are better for radiators and when there's something obstructing the way of the airflow. And since the Corsair case has a mesh and a dust filter in front of the intake fans I thought two static fans as intake would be the right choice. Am I wrong here or will it even matter? If you got any thoughts or input feel free to share it, thanks in advance! My current idea of fans: 2 x Arctic Bionix P140 in the front as intake [link] [comments]

First build done in under 3 hours! Posted: 23 Jun 2021 08:35 AM PDT Here are the pics. This is my first foray into building a PC. Can't afford building one for myself right now, but did a build for my father-in-law. Use cases are photo editing and, possibly, 3D modelling. Here's a part list, all components bought from local vendors:

Posted: 23 Jun 2021 02:32 PM PDT Hey everyone I need help with changing out a fan that went bad. I need 12v 2 wire 40x20mm fan that operates at 0.16a. I bought one that fit the specs with the exception being it operated at 0.1a but figured it would work. Problem is the connection is too big to fit into the connection on the board. Where can I get the right fan? I've spent hours on the internet trying to find something but have had no luck. I've looked up the manufacture model number and name and nothing on that end either. The fan I'm replacing is a Runda Model:RS4020S12L Heres a pic to hopefully help. https://imgur.com/a/3UEap21 [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Jun 2021 04:05 PM PDT I finally built my pc earlier this year and after POST and windows install I only have half of my RAM. I don't have onboard video and no bios option to change anything like what I've found doing my own searching. I did do a fresh install of windows, updated the chipset and bios and made sure all drivers were up to date. (Even cleared cmos) Pc list: Ryzen 7 2700x MSI MEG x570 ACE 64g trident z 3600mhz ddr4 ram 2080 super ftw3 hybrid It was suggested to me that the ram wasn't on the QVL for the mobo (Newegg lied to me when parting it out) And someone said that 3600mhz is far faster than the cpu and mobo is specced for so I stepped the speed down to the cpu max frequency and still nothing. Can I get my 32g back for system ram? Hardware shows its reserved for vram for the 2080 super?? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Jun 2021 03:55 PM PDT I would like to build a PC with all high end parts except the gpu. I have a budget of around 1k dollars and would like a pc that i can just play minecraft, CSGO, and age of empires definitive edition. I eventually want to save up to buy a 3070 but GPUs are crazy expensive rn. Is it possible to build a pc that will be ready for a 3070 and use a less expensive card for now and temporary play less demanding games. if so what components should I buy? Just bought a custom Pc , how do I take care of it Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:41 AM PDT I am so far quite content with my PC . I was wondering what to do next , what should I check for , what do I need to know about having pc and how to take care and manage it and is there anything I need to learn ? What do in case of viruses and how to avoid them . I dont want to use my pc blindly so I appreciate the knowledge I can get Edit: Do I need to update my parts software like the motherboard when an update comes out ? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 08:52 AM PDT I've been trying to ID this case for quite a while and cannot seem to figure it out I've used PCPartPicker to try and figure it out, but even with all more spec filters, I still have over 200 cases (and scrolling through none seemed to match) This is the front of the case, with 4x 5.25 external bays, 2x USB-A, Power and Reset buttons, Mic and Audio jack Here is a wide view of the interior; best I can figure its 4x 3.5 bays, 2x (slightly smaller?) 3.5 bays oriented the opposite way (front to back), and I believe 7x full size expansion slots, no shroud on the PSU. No glass panels on the whole case, but does have this access panel door on the opening panel. Current it's housing a H61M-E33 (B3) Micro-ATX board, but looks like it could fit a bit bigger. I can't seem to find any branding or numbers on the entirety of the case (save one sticker that just reads "S/N 1080728"). Happy to answer any questions, but in desperate need of some help! Motherboards busted, what now? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 03:40 PM PDT Sorry if the formatting on this makes it hard to read, I have to type this out on my phone. Should also start off by saying I have no clue about computers. None. Just over two years ago I picked up this computer from Newegg, and it worked fine for what I needed it for. Fast forward until a few weeks ago, I went to turn it on and everything seemed to start but I was stuck at the ASRock screen. After some looking around, I found out it likely means my motherboard was busted. Tried a few suggestions to make sure, but honestly not sure what I'm doing so I'm going to go with what Google told me. I'm just wondering what a compatible upgrade would be. I don't mind spending money, I'd just rather ask someone who knows what they're doing before I make a mistake. I'll probably be waiting on a sale too, so don't mind something that costs a bit more. Posted: 23 Jun 2021 03:33 PM PDT I building my rig. I'm using a Z590 Pro WiFi board and installing an M.2 drive in the 1st slot. Out of the box there was a heat shield with a thermal pad with film still on it over this socket. Do I remove the heat shield? Or do I remove the film and install the heat shield over the drive? Or leave the 1st socket alone and install my drive in the #2 socket? The manual says socket 1 runs of the CPU while socket 2&3 run off the z590 chipset. Also I have an R9 290 GPU, I'm guessing that should go in the #1 PCI socket closest to the CPU, right? [link] [comments]
CPU Fans running super loud when gaming after upgrading GPU Posted: 23 Jun 2021 03:31 PM PDT Last month the RX 580 GPU on my little brother's PC died. We replaced it with a GTX 1660 Ti today and ran into some problems. Basically we've tried two games (Overwatch and Rocket League) and just seconds after launching them (just the menu, without even playing) we can hear the CPU Fans get super loud, MUCH louder than before. I didn't leave the games running for too long. CPU temperature (according to HWinfo) after around 5 minutes spent in Rocket League's menu was 67° C max. Idle temperature is around 40° C. Room temperature was around 24° C. So I wouldn't really say it's overheating. I should probably try to run a game for a bit longer, but I was kinda scared because it just kept getting louder and louder, LOL. Any way to fix this? I know that a better GPU will put more stress to a CPU, especially at higher framerates (but Overwatch menu is capped @ 60FPS AFAIK, Rocket League was capped at 141FPS). I also know that stock Intel coolers aren't great. But is the difference between the RX 580 and GTX 1660 Ti really so drastic? His PC was pretty quiet when gaming before, but now it kinda sounds like a PS4 Jet Engine after starting a game. Specs: CPU: i5 9400F (w/ stock Intel cooler) GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 1660 Ti 6GB (w/ latest drivers installed) RAM: 8GB HyperX Fury 2666MHz (2x4GB) MOBO: ASROCK B360M PRO4 PSU: SilentiumPC Vero L2 500W Case: SilentiumPC Regnum RG4 w/ 3x 120mm Fans Monitor: 144Hz @ 1080p [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:13 PM PDT Hey guys, I learned something today, and thought I should share it with others, just in case they had the same problem and came to the same incorrect conclusion that I did. I got a 3080 Ti on eBay, it arrived on Monday. I know, I know, I'm sorry. >< I finally broke. BUT, I did it to replace a 980 Ti, so maybe a little forgiveness is allowed here? I cleaned out all the old drivers with DDU, swapped cards, and installed GeForce Experience + latest drivers. All good. (Btw, why the FRICK is the Nvidia Control Panel only available behind the Microsoft Store??? Geebus.) And then I started having issues.
My conclusion was: new graphics card, and this is happening? I guess I must have a bad card. Shit, I will have to RMA it now. I was WRONG. Long story short, I stuck my head INSIDE my case while it was running, with the graphics card at my left ear and the PSU at my right ear. And lo and behold, when the whining pulsed in and out, it was definitely coming from the PSU, and NOT the graphics card! So, I had a power issue. Which was odd, because I was using an 850-watt titanium-rated PSU. You know how PCIe rails have two plugs on them? Yeah, ignore the 2nd plug. I know it will hurt your cable management urges, but just let it dangle. The 3080 Ti has 3 8-pin power inputs, and it really NEEDS all three to be powered by completely separate lines. Do not use the 2nd plug on one of the lines, in order to only need to run 2 cables, the power draw is apparently just too much, and will over-tax the PSU while not providing enough power. I pulled out my PSU box, grabbed a third PCIe cable, and plugged it in. Bam, all problems are now gone. The benchmark runs completely through, beautifully. Coil whine is gone. Keyboard and mouse inputs are no longer being duplicated. [link] [comments] |
