Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

I’m caught in a boot loop and I have no idea why

    Posted: 13 May 2021 04:29 AM PDT

I got an old, used pc from eBay for $150, as I wanted to learn a thing or two about pc building before heading into my main pc build. It worked fine before dismantling, but now when I've build it back up and press the power button, the pc gets caught in a boot loop. I've tried re-connecting everything, but the issue is still there. I don't believe I broke any components during the assembly as I handled everything with upmost care.

Edit: I tried booting with only one RAM stick, and ladies and gentlemen, we got 'em. After 8 hrs of work, the issue was a faulty RAM stick all along :/ thank you kind strangers for helping out!

    I'm planning to buy a 3070, should I go with a 1080p 240hz monitor or a 1440p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 12:20 AM PDT

I was wondering if I should take a 1080p 240hz monitor or a 1440p 144hz monitor since they're around the same price (the 1440p one is like 100$ more).

Stock i7 10700k temps seem to be rather high (40C idle, 70C starting a game, reached 114C while in game)

    Posted: 13 May 2021 01:47 AM PDT

I just recently purchased a new computer, and built it yesterday. The performance is great, however the temperatures seem to be quite high.

It reaches around ~80 while under 20% CPU usage, task manager seems to be displaying 4.7 GHz at all times during gaming. (HWMonitor seems to be indicating all cores have reached 4800, and 1 core reached 4900)

The highest CPU voltage as far as I can see is 1.288V.

    Specifications:
    - i7 10700k (stock)
    - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (black edition)
    - Sharkoon TG4 case (stock fans & installation)
    - ASRock Z490 Pro4
    - ZOTAC GTX 970 AMP! Extreme Edition

Edit: I disabled turbo boost temporarily until I get a better cooler, temps are now well under 55 under load.

Edit 2: I installed a second fan on my tower, and (as many people already suggested), the warranty sticker was still on the contact plate. Running at 50C under load with turbo boosting enabled, thanks everyone!

    Got a GTX 1080 paired with a R5 2600, looking to get either a R5 3600 or 5600X

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:11 AM PDT

Looking to upgrade my CPU, obviously the 5600X is better but not too sure if it would be overkill. My thoughts are getting the 5600X would be future proof for further upgrades, where as the 3600 would maybe need upgraded sooner.

    Any help is appreciated :)

RTX 3060 or RTX 2060 Super?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:33 AM PDT

My options are RTX 2060 super from Galax which is cheaper than Colourful iGame RTX 3060 w oc (3 fan). In the final build the price difference will be 13-14%.

Which one should I go for? I don't know anything about the galax brand.

And between the 2 gpu will 3060 be more future proof? Will the DLSS performance be better in 3060?

I play a mix of competitive shooter (apex, valorant, warzone) 70% of the time and single player games rest of the time. Although that may change when I get a decent gpu at 1080p.

Bios not displaying WQHD monitor but on 1080 it will please help!

    Posted: 13 May 2021 04:53 AM PDT

I recently got myself an Asus Rog Strix Z490 for my new i9 10850K. Im using a 1080 ti from evga and the weird thing is I have a dual Monitor setup, BUT i want to sell my 1080P monitor because I just the 2K one. Both are connected via display port to the graphics card but I just have one connected by the time. So when I use my 2K monitor there is no boot logo or F2 option for Bios, it just starts into Windows and on the 1080P monitor I get the normal Asus boot logo with bios option. I just updated the bios but that didn't change anything....

Everything is up to date and i don't know what to do else

    Thank you

Is my SSD dead? “Reboot and select proper boot device” error after trying multiple fixes. Plz help!

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:44 AM PDT

Hi y'all so I keep seeing this error: https://ibb.co/JRn7n3C

I have tried ctrl+alt+delete and that worked the first couple of times but it no longer works. I tried booting into my bios, and didn't see anything wonky (however I am a total n00b so this doesn't mean much). So please let me know if you see anything wrong:

    https://ibb.co/bKd4Mwm https://ibb.co/PQVWs1z https://ibb.co/37yd0fc

I installed windows with a USB I got from Best Buy and I wasn't sure which I one was my ssd so I chose the second option from this picture https://ibb.co/G5Zv4ym cause that's what my pal said to choose (my ssd is 500gb).

Is there anything I can/should try? I still have the windows USB. Is my SSD dead (I don't see how as this build is less than one week old).

Edit: More screenshots from BIOS This time I see the windows boot manager & was able to load windows (didn't do anything to fix it): https://ibb.co/fFPZgv5 https://ibb.co/GRDxZMx

EDIT This has been solved! Please refer to this comment. If this solution doesn't wind up working (I had to go to work, so couldn't thoroughly test), I will update. But HUGE thank you to this community. You all are so helpful and kind, I appreciate everyone who chimes in. Thank you so much!

Using a projector instead of a monitor for everyday use?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 04:30 AM PDT

I have some painful sound sensitivity and unfortunately, every computer monitor I've tried using makes at least a tiny noise that hurts my ears. It's easy enough to put a computer tower in a separate room and run really long HDMI/USB cables for mouse and keyboard, but that obviously doesn't work for a monitor.

As such, I've been searching for a silent monitor solution (I've posted at r/monitors about this before, to no avail) and recently saw someone use a projector briefly in a Youtube video and wondered if that might work for me.

A quick search on Amazon turns up a moderately wide range of prices (~$80 to over $300) and a lot of them are intended to be used to watch movies, so while I won't be doing any high-end gaming, presumably lag shouldn't be too much of an issue.

It's just, this is an extremely odd use case. Before I go blowing any money, does anyone have any experience using a projector? Is this even suitable as a monitor replacement at all? Will a typical PC even display to a projector as its primary display at boot? (For that matter, could I plug in a Switch or PS4 and reasonably play?)

    Thanks for any help.

GPU failure - request for experienced souls who may identify solutions from PCB snapshot

    Posted: 13 May 2021 05:50 AM PDT

Anddd my GPU decides to die amidst the worst GPU crisis we've ever seen. Hoping for some experienced souls who will be able to save my GPU. Previous post.

It's a Zotac 1060 Mini 3GB edition from 2016. Because I was a first-time builder, I didn't know to register for its extended warranty so I'm stuck here without any chance of RMA-ing it. Local distributor won't RMA it for a fee as well. GPU repairs are hard to find, and a local repair shop won't even entertain my request, not stating the costs but just saying it's not worth the money to repair it and that a second-hand card would be my best option.

I believe my GPU is worth saving, because for some reason unknown to me, it works intermittently. What I mean is that it will work fine for a couple of days, allowing me to game and video edit without issues, before crashing with artifact screens and bright screens of random colors crashing the system. I'll pull it out and put it one side, and replace it with a GT730 for basic display since the CPU doesn't have an iGPU (5600X). I try my luck a few days later and the GTX1060 works fine again, rinse and repeat. Example1, example 2, example 3 of artifacts/screen crashes.

    Additional details:

    • Current build list
    • Have tried DDU and reinstalling drivers
    • Have repasted the GPU couple times (since it solved the GPU issue last time)
    • GPU has been RMA-ed once ~1 year ago

I'm including snapshots of the PCB in case any experienced soul can assist me in any advice possible. I may have access to general workshop tools, soldering irons, etc which I hope would suffice for a home fix. I'm unsure if the capacitor is faulty or not (PCB 1), or if it's just wear and tear. Nothing looks off to me from the PCB but I'm not a trained professional. Do let me know if any additional details or pictures are required. PCB 1, PCB 2, PCB 3.

    Cheers,
Poor soul who just wants to complete Nier Automata on PC.

Are there any good full size cases *without* glass side panels?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 07:49 AM PDT

I'm not a fan of RGB or big ol glass panels. I like old school under stated pC looks with high air flow, vented side panels, with fans.

I'm planning a new build and unless I missed something, these cases just don't exist anymore?

Everything is glass. Glass everywhere. Thermals be dammed.

Asus Rog Strix X570 doesn't match Phanteks P500A

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:12 AM PDT

So... I messed up. I'm building a new PC but didn't think to check for front IO compatibility (I know, silly of me).

Pretty much, the Phanteks has a USB-C GEN 2 and two USB 3.0 ports on the front IO but the Asus X570 only has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. Does that mean none of the USB ports on the front IO will work and, if so, can I do something to remedy it?

    Thanks.

Could trade my RTX 3080 for a RX 6900xt and 500€, will I regret it?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 11:44 AM PDT

So I could trade my 4 months old rtx 3080 vision oc from Gigabyte for a new, unopened rx 6900 xt reference design + that guy gives me 500€. Sounds like a sweet deal right? The thing is Iam afraid I will miss features like ray tracing, dlss and on top of that Iam using a gsync monitor. RT is not a thing I really enjoy but dlss in some games is awesome (ie Cyberpunk) and in others like Metro enhanced edition its very blurry. Iam not playing competitive shooters nor do I use my gpu for professional applications. What would you do? Would you take that deal?

Fresh mobo, CPU & RAM upgrade - getting static freezes multiple times a day

    Posted: 13 May 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Hey everyone cheers for taking a look, appreciate any guidance.

So i've recently upgraded from a Ryzen 2600 to 5800x, and decided to upgrade mobo and RAM at the same time, and threw in an AIO for good measure. I bought all of these used on Ebay from separate buyers, if that helps narrow down anything.

Since i've done this upgrade, a few times a day I'll hear a static pop and my PC will freeze and become totally unresponsive until I manually turn it off. So far there's been no permanent damage but it feels like a bit of a ticking time bomb before it doesn't turn back on again afterwards.

As far as I'm aware i'm not touching the PC when this happens - its under my desk in the corner and I don't put my feet up on it anything like that, i've got a subwoofer (that isn't plugged in to anything) that I sometimes put my feet up on.

Is it something simple like needing to re-inspect the risers on the mobo/case, or does it sound like something more critical like a failing PSU? I've had the PSU (600W I believe) since my very first build back in 2012 so possibly time to upgrade?

I'm aware i'm playing with fire here with static so wanna get this solved asap before I fry any components and make this upgrade entirely redundant.

Oddly enough it only seems to happen in the afternoons/evenings or when using certain applications? I WFH every day from 9am-3pm on zoom and it's never once done it during that, but when i'm using audio production software or gaming in the afternoons and evenings, that's when it seems to happen most.

I leave my PC on at night - so far it's never happened overnight.

I used a static band and took all necessary precautions during the build.

My other concern is my desk are has a LOT of wires.

    Like loads.

I have a whole DJ and production setup with decks, speakers and a record player (static factory) around my desk to the point where I've had to use construction clamps to hold the vast mileage of wires to the underside of my desk.

I've been getting static shocks every time I touch my record player despite the anti-static arm and grounding cable, so I'm sure there's something going on in my wiring setup to be causing this.

I'm just confused that it's happened right after upgrading - this never happened with my old build, leading me to believe I've installed something wrong or the second-hand components themselves are faulty in some way.

In terms of extensions and power lead setup, I have:

    • Audio (Decks, mixer, speakers, record player) one one extension that goes directly into the wall socket

    • 3 monitors on another extension, which is plugged into a larger extension (yes, I know, bad practice but i have 2 accessible plugs in my room so its the only option)

    • The larger extension where PC, network switch, Pi, laptop charger, phone charger and fan are plugged into, as well as daisy chaining the monitors. This goes into the other wall socket.

So yeah narrowed it down to a couple of options but don't want to start pulling wires out and opening up the PC without getting some advice first.

Any suggestions and help would be super appreciated!

    3070 ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 13 May 2021 11:25 AM PDT

    I just have two questions:

    1. I plan one day to get a 3070 to pair with my ryzen 5 3600. Do you think that this will bottleneck at 1080p?

    2. With these components would a 600W power supply be sufficient?

Trouble getting full speed on 4 port SATA HBA PCI

    Posted: 13 May 2021 01:31 PM PDT

SATA HBA PCI 3.0 only working at 2.5gbps

Guys, I bought a pci hba with 4x SATA3 ports. I connected 4 SSD's to it, but it only gives me 2.5gbps per channel instead of full power. It now has 2 ssd's installed running at 10gbps max (4 lanes of 2.5gbps(?). Adding more ssd's just makes it worthless.

https://www.delock.com/produkt/89395/merkmale.html this is the product I bought and I am running it on a SuperMicro X9dri-f motherboard.

Why can't I run it on 4x SATA3 with full bandwidth?

Am I getting bamboozled? - Patriot Viper VPN100 2TB SSD DRAM buffer size reduction

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:34 AM PDT

Bought the Patriot Viper VPN100 2TB a week ago after reading some reviews. On paper this is a fairly good SSD with a fast mainstream controller, TLC and full-sized DRAM buffer (i.e. 2GiB)

Upon opening it and removing the chonky heatsink, and checking the components' model no., I found some major discrpancy between the SSD I have on hand and the marketing material.

    Front side (heatsink removed)

    Back side

Two major discrepancies here: The Controller has been changed to Phison E12S from E12, and more importantly, The DRAM buffer size has been reduced.

One single DRAM chip Kingston D2516ECMDXGJD, which is 4Gb (512MB) in capacity, a quarter of what is stated in the spec sheet. I know bait and switch is a relatively common thing in SSD, but this is not just bait and switch, this is blatant false advertisement.

Or did I get the DRAM specs wrong somewhere? And is there any performance impact with a (probably) smaller DRAM buffer?

    PSU connectors

    Posted: 13 May 2021 05:42 AM PDT

So I bought a new PSU with 500W because my old one was only 200W and I needed a new one for my new GPU.

After I removed the old one, I'm struggling in how and where to plug the new one's connectors and cables. I will add a picture with my motherboard and I will mark with w circles the spots where my old PSU was plugged in.

And I will add pictures with my new PSU connectors, in case someone can show me where to plug them and which ones. My old PSU want connected to any other hardware just the two mentioned in the picture.

    Thanks a lot!
