Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

First Desk PC I built !

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 05:15 AM PDT

I recently built a Desk PC. (You read that right, not a desktop PC, a desk PC!)

It's basically a desktop PC (among others) fitted inside a 1U thick desk.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EpBJpFZCKw

Now I need to upgrade the core components and switch to a water cooling system!

Let me know what you think of it ! :)

Dying GeForce RTX 2080 - need replacement

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 07:40 AM PDT

I know video cards are hard to come by now but my current card (GeForce RTX 2080) is dying. I have an Alienware 1900R monitor (WQHD 3440 x 1440p 100Hz refresh) and a second (old) monitor. I'm not looking for anything top of the line, but a reasonable upgrade to my current card. I'd like to keep the cost under $1000 (if possible).

I'm extremely out of the loop with current cards and the market is completely crazy now so I'm hoping someone who has been on top of this can give me a good recommendation.

Edit - Best recommendation: 3080. However it might be I don't need a new card at all. Looking into fixing my issues instead.

Edit2 - ... it seems like many posts that are suggesting trying to fix the problem instead of replacing it are being downvoted and I have a theory that scalpers that want to profit off people buying GPUs at crazy prices are here downvoting anyone suggesting I try to fix it...

M.2 not showing up no matter what I try.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 06:18 AM PDT

M.2 not showing up no matter what I try.

So I have just built my first ever pc. I've got it up and running and super happy with it just I can't get my m.2 drive to show anywhere ( bios, disk manager, etc). Below is the list of hardware I have used so any advice would be great even if not directly related to the m.2.

    • Ryzen 7 5800x cpu
    • Msi x570 tomahawk WiFi mobo
    • 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4
    • RM 750 80 plus gold FMod atx
    • I cue H100i elite capellix aio
    • Samsung 1TB 870evo 2.5
    • 500GB WD blue SSD m.2 3D nand
    • I managed to get 1070ti of a friend and will look to upgrade as soon as possible.

    1440p 144hz Monitor Recommendation

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 01:23 PM PDT

Hello, all! I am completely clueless on which 1440p monitor to purchase, and I have been stuck with 1080p for many years now and would like to upgrade. I game a decent amount but would also like a monitor with good picture quality(little compromise) and decent response time. If anyone could recommend me a monitor, I'd really appreciate it!

A little help to build a budget" video-editing" PC

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 07:28 AM PDT

Hello, I'm looking for a little help to build a video-editing PC on the lower budget end. I'm also gaming a little, but not super high end detail environments. Just League of Legends / Overwatch or Genshin Impact, similar games can be expected to follow.

    My budget: ~1100€ / ~1300 USD - GPU excluded (currently only a GTX 1070 6gb)

Planned is the build as following:

    System: Windows 10+

Mainboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max, ATX, So.AM4, (7C02-020R) (I've read that 450er series are best for the Ryzen 7, maybe this info is outdated?!)

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8x 3.60GHz So.AM4 BOX

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4-3200 DIMM CL16 Dual Kit (min requirement is 32GB as I'm running 2 monitors + screen graphic tablet & multiple programs Adobe PS, Adobe AI, Adobe AE & others)

Power supply: 650 Watt Corsair CX Series CX650M Modular 80+ Bronze (due to the screen graphic tablet I need a little power, the current GPU requires 550 and I feel like my system is screaming for a little more so 600 is a must?)

    M.2 + Sata: 1000GB Crucial P1 NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4 32Gb/s 3D-NAND QLC (CT1000P1SSD8)
    1000GB Samsung 860 Evo 2.5" (6.4cm) SATA 6Gb/s 3D-NAND TLC (MZ-76E1T0B/EU)

    Case: ???

    Cooling fans: ???

I was thinking of making use of the M.2 + an additional sata 1Tb each?!I'm totally clueless about the case, I'd like a midi tower since it is located on my desk and I prefer a none rgb lightshow, to not distract my eyes. At least 2 USB front slots , preferable 3.Since I buy the boxed CPU there is still the question of additional fans for the case cooling.

If you have any suggestions, performance perks, best compatibility parts and most a good case that's not blinking/ doesn't have an open window and is available via mindfactory.de I'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

Are GPU holders/sag prevention made out of metal brackets safe? (Image linked)

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 05:30 AM PDT

    Hey!

I just bought this: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41gwtXEwn5L._SL1001_.jpg GPU holder and now I'm getting second thoughts if it's safe as it is made out of metal. Is it possible to short the GPU/cause damage with this little guys? I have a heavy 3090 strix here I want to support.

So in other words, would direct contact with the gpu - metal on the holder cause damage? I know the sag holder has a little foam cutout but it isn't big at all.

The underside of the GPU looks like this: https://inetimg2.se/img/688x386/5411679_17.jpg and the sag holder will have contact on the right side (center) in the image.

    Thanks.

    Plastidipping back of motherboard

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:43 PM PDT

Putting together a cheapo PC to teach a 6 y/o how PCs work and to give him something to tinker with. More likely than not he will be messing with the parts pretty regularly so I'm trying to accident-proof it as much as possible.

I have some plastidip laying around, is there any reason why I can't/shouldn't hit the back of the motherboard with a thick coat of the stuff to get rid of the pointy bois. I will mask off the screw holes on top of the standoffs of course

Why do some cases have different front I/O ports than front I/O internal headers?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 07:23 AM PDT

For example: NZXT H510 Elite Matte Black

    Front I/O Ports are USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, and audio jack.

Front I/O Internal Headers are USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 2.0, and audio.

Is this just in case your motherboard doesn't have a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header so you can still use the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port as a USB 2.0 port? I couldn't find anything about this online.

MSI B450 Tomahawk PCI slot not working with RTX 2070 Super

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 12:48 PM PDT

1 year ago I built my first PC, it worked perfectly up to a week ago. The problem started with no boot and the VGA light lit on the mobo. Wiped CMOS (?) and places GPU in 2nd PCIe slot. The computer booted again. Everything seemed fine. But when the CPU temperature would go to 75C°, the fans would go to 100% and would not stop even the computer was idling. Otherwise, the PC worked fine.

Wanting to fix the noise, I tried putting the GPU in the first PCIe slot, but this caused the above error again. So I tried an old GPU in the first slot. This works. But of course, I want to use my new GPU. Can anyone help me out with what might be the problem?

TLDR: PC won't boot when my GPU is in the first PCIe slot and the fans will not slow down when the GPU is in the bottom slot. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I haven't personally tested it yet since I'm still saving up for every other parts and it may take a couple months until I can finish it probably next year. I just checked it again today and I noticed the heatsink fins aren't lined up correctly. I took a photo but I don't think I can put some on here. Will my gpu be alright?

    CPU usage higher than GPU

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 12:14 PM PDT

Hey guys, I recently built my own pc and everything seemed fine. Recently i started to game more often and noticed that the CPU usage is higher than the gpu. tried reinstalling windows, reinstalling drivers, etc etc, no help. Anyone got any idea why? This only happens during gaming. For example, during games, the gpu would run at 97-99%, cpu around 40-50%. then the gpu would drop to 70% (roughly), and cpu would be using 70-80%. the fps would then start dropping as well, by 30-40 fps roughly, in some games (such as valorant), it drops half the fps.

So i got a 3080, but i need the rest of the pc. Help please

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 09:48 AM PDT

So i am upgrading my 6 year old pc, at the moment i got a steal on a MSI 3080 suprim x, but my i7-4790k just doesn't cut it for heavy duty games.

So few questions i have are, about the best motherboard and cpu, i wanted AMD but the price atm is ridiculous so i think intel will be the best bet.

atm i dont intend to OC atm, maybe later will. So i was wondering is the investment into the aio cooler and the K processor worth it? Should i buy a decent cpu air cooler and just get more ram?

anyways any help suggestions would be apreciated

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

So I've finally put together everything to build my new PC. Press power button, nothing happens but the cpu light turns on on the motherboard. Ok, flashed a newer BIOS. Press power button, DRAM light pops up on the motherboard, no more cpu light. Ok, reseated the DRAM. Try again, cpu light turns on. Reseat the cpu connector (or try to push it in again into the PSU). Try again. CPU light still on. Mind you, at this point, having the PDU connected would make the power button light up even when the PC itself was off, and pressing the power button would make everything turn on (GPU, case fans, cpu cooler, etc).

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    Discussed above

How to correctly install Windows on SSD while having HDD that already has Windows and other files

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 06:41 AM PDT

Hello. I built my PC back in 2017 and I've noticed that it has been running slower. I am certain that the HDD is the problem because I've checked my other components and they are working fine. I am planning to get a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO SSD to put my most played games and Windows on. I don't know how to correctly install Windows in my soon-to-be SSD as I already have it on my HDD.

    How would I do this?

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1500x

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

    MOBO: MSI B350 PRO-VDH

    Advice on PC I ordered

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:32 PM PDT

So I've had my PC planned or part picker for months now but due to obvious shortages I couldn't get a GPU. Out of curiosity I started to look on pre build/custom build sites and I finally found one that had the components I wanted or at least fairly close to them (was mainly on the look out for a 5800x and the strix 3080 and was willing to deviate on other things slightly)and I decided to buy it. Just wanted the opinions of the Reddit as to whether or not there will be any major bottlenecks or issues. Thanks!

    Specs:

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

MotherBoard - Asus ROG Strix X570-F

Cooler - NZXT Kraken X73 AIO

    RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury RGB 32GB (2x16GB) 3600MHz CL18

GPU - Asus RTX 3080 ROG Strix Gaming OC 10GB

    M.2 - Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB

    SSD - Samsung 1TB 870 QVO

Black screen after a few minutes, reboot stays black

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:21 PM PDT

    Hi all,

After building my first pc and booting it for the first time all seems fine.

Windows installs like it should but after a few minutes the screen becomes black, then after a reboot i can still access the bios but when windows tries to boot the screen stays black.

    What i've tried:

    • reinstalling windows (both home/professional)
      • Every time the install goes fine but after a few minutes the black screen appears again
    • Installing windows while connected to the internet
      • Letting windows search for drivers
    • Installing windows without internet connection
      • Quickly installing the graphics card driver from an usb stick
      • Screen goes black mid install
    • Just letting it run for hours when the screen is black
      • video signal doesn't reappear

    Setup:

    • Ryzen 5600X
    • 16Gb Ram HyperX
    • Samsung 970 EVO 1Tb
    • Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite (flashed to latest BIOS for ryzen 5000 support)
    • Asus RX5600XT Dual 6Gb

Anybody knows how to get it running again?

Building a VR Ready PC for my daughter

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:07 PM PDT

I bought an Oculus Quest 2 for my daughter for Christmas. Possibly my first mistake…

But she's now decided she'd like a gaming PC to, mainly for VR. I've told her I'd consider one for next Christmas if she managed to save some towards it as it works out far more than I'd usually spend.

I've never built a PC or owned a gaming PC so I've spent the last few weeks researching. I've found out that VR needs pretty good spec setup.

As I've said, it's likely to be a Christmas present but would like to start getting some bits now. Obviously things like case, RAM and storage are safe bets to get now. Im thinking if I leave a CPU I will likely save money and hopefully defiantly save some waiting for a GPU.

What still confuses me is motherboards. Will I be able to get one now? Can you recommend one that's not going to cost the earth? I'm hoping sub £100.

I've not decided between AMD or Intel either. What's going to be best for VR?

    Thanks

I wanna upgrade my build. What should I do?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 01:59 PM PDT

    Hello,

I currently have a pc, and it runs smoothly; however, with games needing new hardware to run smoothly, I would like to upgrade my parts. The only problem is, I don't know what to upgrade. My specs are in this post. Let me know what you recommend and what it does.

    Edit - I have a budget of $300, which I know isn't a lot.

This is my set Pc that i'm planning on buying. Is it good enough and am I missing something?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 01:57 PM PDT

    -AMD Risen 5 5600X.

    - Nvidia RTX 3070

    -B550 Mother board

    - Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16gb 3200 megahertz

    - 970 evo plus Samsung 1TB

    - Straight Power 11

So far all of this came to be 1,423.86 USD which I think is fair but if anything like the cpu or gpu could be stronger lmk. money isn't that much of a issue and im mostly going to game apex legends/ gat/ fortnite and other popular games. also panning on using YouTube and stuff like that for fun but I think that won't be much of a issue. Again thanks in advance for your time to check my pc build.
