This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

    Are 32bit computers still a thing ?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:37 AM PDT

I see a lot of programs offering 32bit versions of themselves, yet I thought this architecture belonged to the past. Are they there only for legacy purposes or is there still a use for them I am not aware of?

Just build a Ryzen 5800x with RX 6700XT. CPU load 100% at idle?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:24 PM PDT

It's my first time running a full AMD build.

Sometimes my CPU sits at 100% load at idle at 80 degrees temp. As soon as I open up task manager to see the culprit, it drops back down 1-2% load, and i couldn't see what it was.

    Any ideas?

A lurker here for a while and saw some great advice, so thanks a lot.

Just finished my first build, which started months ago with a lot of research and component hunting. I didn't buy all at once, when I thought I understood how it worked or there was a deal. Except the GPU and you all know why.

looking for a CPU/GPU cooler with large contact surface

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:46 AM PDT

Hello, having the luck to get a 3090 FE at msrp I wanted give it some cooling upgrade for the backplate-ram heating problem. I saw a lot of people having great result sticking some random cpu cooler on it and I wanted to find something with a wider contact surface, thinking it would draw the heat easier from the plate.

I found the ARCTIC Alpine 12 passive

    https://www.arctic.de/en/Alpine-12-Passive/ACALP00024A

    https://www.arctic.de/en/Alpine-AM4-Passive/ACALP00022A

the AM4 version seems to have a wider contact area but the non-AM4 has a smaller step that could maybe be compensated with thick thermal pads?

I have a 3d printer so I can slap a fan on any heatsink without too much problems.

so here I am, if you have any tips for this project or product suggestion it would help a lot !

Use GTX 3090 and 2080ti on Gigabyte X570 AORUS Master?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:37 AM PDT

Noob alert! I never built a computer before and I am just getting started. I would appreciate it if you also expand your answer with why can/cannot I do that.

I have a 2080ti plugged into a Gigabyte X570 AORUS Master. Can I also plug GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 VISION OC - 24GB GDDR6X onto the Gigabyte X570 and use both graphics cards at the same time?

I am lucky enough to live near a Micro Center, so I was able to get the GPU at MSRP in about a month.

It's been so long since I gamed and this is the first PC I ever built. Going to use it for the first time this weekend!

Should I just get a 1650 and upgrade it when the gpu market is normal?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:09 PM PDT

Hi everyone I honestly dont know if this is a good decision. All the parts of my pc is completely done except the GPU (shocking).

Luckily someone I know has a gtx 1650 brand new lying around their house apparently he bought it but got the 2070 instead.

He's selling it to me around $160 usd. Should I just buy it and wait for the gpu market to normalized and the upgrade?

Im new to pc gaming/builing. I dont know what performance to expect.

The games I majority play are FPS shooters.

    Thank you.

UPDATE: I bought it and Im so happy right now my first gaming computer is done!

UPDATE 2: My friend knows about the current situation about the gpu market he knows he could sell it for about $250+, but being a good friend he just sold it to me for $160.

Do I need to uninstall drivers?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:18 AM PDT

I completed my build with a GT 1030 a week or so ago and have just managed to get a 1660 SUPER to replace it with. Do I need to completely wipe my display drivers or should the drivers just take care of it for me when I put the 1660 in?

“The system cannot find any bootable devices.” even though there is one

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:35 AM PDT

    Components:

    Asus Z590-A - Bios 0402

    Intel 10700K

    Crucial 32GB 3200MHz CL16

    Samsung 860 evo sata ssd

Hey guys, here is the problem:

I changed components on a pc but need/want to use the same windows installation, pc parts work fine, everything is detected and runs good.
But I can't choose my ssd as the device it should boot from. If I open the boot menu F8 it just says "The system cannot find any bootable devices."

Please help, and no I can't just reinstall windows in this case. And somehow the CMS is just greyed out...

    UK Stores

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:45 PM PDT

Hey everyone! So I am a Spanish student in the UK and have experience building PCs, rather for my family or friends (of course, mine too!).

I need to build one for myself here in the UK, but every single shop I check online keeps asking me to pay the build (not the components obviously, but for them to build it for me) or has some personalised shit I do not want, like getting rid of a manufacturer's logo on a case to put theirs.

What websites do you use to buy just the components? I used to buy from Spain but Brexit is a fucking joke with customs charges now.

Will my CX550m be able to run 980ti(replaced with 2x120mm fans) paired with i5 8600k?

The active fans will be: front, cpu and exhaust + from the GPU

    KVM Switch Video Output

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:33 PM PDT

I've been thinking of getting a KVM switch since I use 2 computers frequently, one also being my gaming pc, but I was worried about the switch not being able to handle the data output from my graphics card. For example 2 monitors, one being up to 4k at 165 Hz. I didn't want the resolution or refresh rate to be cut down due to the switch.

Is this an actual possibility that I have to pay attention to, or am I worried for nothing? If so, does anyone have recommendations for a switch?

    Replacement CPU cooling fan

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:18 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I was never much involved with CPU cooling. All the CPUs I used came with stock fans and since I don't overclock and never had issues with performance even while gaming, I was happy to use them but now it looks like I have to replace it and I don't know anything about it.

Here's the thing, my machine is an old workhorse but it does the job and if I want to properly upgrade, it will be a replacement, not an upgrade. Recently I maxed it out with used parts that fit what I had and I'm happy with the performance.

Build now: Asrock H97 Pro4, Intel i7-4790 (socket 1150), 24 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 960

But recently the stock CPU fan (Foxconn E97379-003) started getting irritatingly loud when under larger workload (when it goes roughly above ~2200-2300 rpm according to Open Hardware Monitor). Probably because it's getting old. Temps according to RealTemp are okay, so (I think) replacing the fan is purely a question of my comfort and decreasing under-load noise levels.

However, I am out of budget as is, so I'll have to go on the cheaper side of things, currently eyeing an ARCTIC Alpine 12 CO. Do you all think it would be a good choice for what I need?

When installing new case fans do I need to unplug the pc from the wall or can I just shut it down

New PC, took SSD and GPU from old computer. GPU not starting up, everything else does.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:17 PM PDT

    Pictures

Just got the processor for my new PC so I can actually use the thing. Took the SSD and GPU from my old computer so I can move Windows onto the NVME drive and have the SSD as a backup.

    • B550 Tomahawk AM4+ socket motherboard
    • Ryzen 9 5950x Processor
    • Sapphire 5700XT GPU 8GB
    • 32 GB RAM
    • NZXT X73 Liquid Cooling
    • Dark Power Pro 11 1000W Platinum PSU

Everything is connected correctly, the modular cable is in the PCiE1 slot and both 8 pin power connectors are clipped in. I literally took this card out of my working PC and put it onto the new mobo and nothing happens. No fans spinning and no output to the monitor.

In the 2nd picture (after the gif) does it look likes its not in far enough? It's clipped in and held. The red light is the troubleshooter and it's got VGA lit up, I just don't know how to get it to work, this is the 5th pc I've built and I am lost.

Edit: I have tried different cables and different ports on the PSU and it still won't power on.

Is this normal for a year old 1TB HDD?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:03 AM PDT

Was checking the usage of a 1 year 2 months old 250GB SDD because due to it's low capacity I am afraid it may stopped working (I have all the info saved in a HDD just in case) and when decided to check the HDD where I have all my games Installed and all the not important programs I notices that it says under "Power on hours": 6 years 2 months, is this normal for a year old HDD? or was I scammed?, I bought this from a well know local stored in my country that's why I never thought of checking this, but when it arrived it was in a Unmarked white box with it's propper envelope and components (Sata III data cable)

Here is an image of what CristalDirskInfo says , the exact translation in Years/Days/Hours is 6 Years 51 Days and 6 Hours

I think my wraith stealth cooler has too much thermal paste, it is thin but it covers much more surface than the cpu itself. Should I take some off from the sides?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:38 AM PDT

I dont know if they changed the procedure but the videos I seen people dont have much thermal paste as I do, mine is almost touching the fins. I'm gonna change the cooler like a week later so I dont want it dripping on the sides. Should I take some off? Sorry, I cant provide a picture because reddit always gives me an error.
