Sold my i5-8600k on eBay. Customer is claiming a capacitor is broken. And that his PC continuously restarts and doesn’t boot bios or the desktop. Can someone look at this photo and tell me if it looks like a capacitor is broken?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 10:33 PM PDT

Photo I took before I shipped it: https://i.imgur.com/2nyihlp.jpg

Photo of the customer sending me a picture of the broken capacitor: https://i.imgur.com/1WHNMgU.jpg

Edit: I did what FoxyRayne suggested and he stopped replying. He's definitely trying to scam me. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Edit 2: So I contacted eBay chat support. And the chat lady was really helpful. She believed my case and assured me that they will side with me 100%. As well as take action on his account.

Link to the chat transcript (with my name and her name blacked out of course): https://docdro.id/hsGhlnY

First PC build, wouldn't have had the confidence to build this without /r/buildapc for the last 8 months and learning from everyone here, so thank you all. RTX 3070 FE + Ryzen 5 3600 UK/Jersey

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 05:15 AM PDT

Hello Everyone, after a lucky stock drop last Wednesday (edit Wednesday the 3rd, wrote this up a while ago) I managed to secure myself a great GPU at a great price in the form of a RTX 3070 founder's edition.

This is the last major piece of my first gaming PC build ever, replacing my 10 year old laptop that just wasn't up to scratch anymore (or in hindsight, really ever. Still, I love that old dinosaur).

Reading /r/buildapc helped me select my parts and avoid various traps and troubles along the way, super grateful to the very knowledgeable builders here and everywhere who do the research and share their experience with us n00bs.

    The Build

Living in Jersey means that while some shippers wont send things here at all (looking at you Curry's) other shipper will remove VAT giving me some options at great bargains.

The other stroke of luck I had was that I bought a random selection of PC parts of a local for £30 last year. One of those items was a Galaxy 1060 3GB which worked fine after testing on a friend's rig so I able to mostly build this in January and still have a nice working PC for when I was able to get a new GPU.

The build went fairly smoothly 1 hour to get everything in, 1 hour to trouble shoot why I couldn't install windows (hadn't fully inserted the M.2), and 2 hours cable managing and re-cable managing until I was satisfied.

No other major dramas except some Arctic F12s that arrived completely broken.

Super happy with this build now and hope it lasts me a good many years.

Comments, criticisms and suggestions all welcomed. Thanks again everyone.

    Choosing a workstation card?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:09 PM PDT

I am helping someone I know build a PC, but I have never looked into workstation cards before so I do not really know what to look for.

He primarily needs the PC for SolidWorks and Cimatron, so I was thinking around 24GB of RAM and an 8-core Ryzen CPU. (He does a little bit of gaming too, mainly e-sports titles)

What Quadro/Radeon Pro cards should I look into if he is on a $3000 overall budget?

I need some ideas on how to link 2 PCs in a server closet, and output to 3 monitors, but be able to switch between the two machines.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:30 PM PDT

I am trying to over engineer a problem here - but hey, that's what we do here.

Problem: I have 2 machines and one work space. Currently I have it set up so I can manually switch between the two via a few button pushes. One is for work, one is for play. All of my peripherals switch via one button push - no issue there. The cables, and the fact I have to have two machines sitting here is driving me nuts.

My idea is to completely rebuild my main PC in a server drawer, leave my work machine as is, store in a different room, and have the whole thing run to 3 monitors. I run 2 4k at 60hz and 1 2k at 144hz and do not want to sacrifice on the 144.

One thing I do not want to lose is the power of my GPU if I run GPU-> PCIe Thunderbolt out -> switch via fiber cable.

My best idea so far is a PCIe thunderbolt card, thunderbolt fiber cable, and a few switches. Does anyone have any advice here?

The main goal is to remove all hardware from this room, but be able to switch seamlessly between the two machines as needed.

$1000 Budget, should I wait to build?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:35 AM PDT

So, I'm looking to get/build a first PC, but I'm not sure if I should even get one at the moment due to the obscene part prices right now. I really don't want to wait as I've been looking to build a PC for almost a year now and have been waiting, but I don't want to buy an overpriced PC given that I don't have much disposable income. Any build lists that are reasonable for $1,000, or any feedback on if I should keep waiting?

Need some basic guidance for upgrading an old PC I built in 2016

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:42 PM PDT

Hi there! First of all, thank you so much for taking time out of your day just to read this and possible comment to help me out. I really appreciate all input given--as I am beyond new and totally learning things still.

    Here's my situation:

I built a lil gaming rig back in 2016 from some guide on a blog.

It has an AMD FX-8320 CPU and a GTX970 graphics card. I don't mind replacing all the other components (I'm sure I'll need a new mobo if I'm to upgrade the CPU) But, is my graphics card worth keeping, either? I know this rig is super old, but my only issue is that my CPU fan sounds like a jet engine and needs replaced. When I started looking into fixing it, I noticed my whole everything seemed super out of date LOL. I'd love any feedback!

PC won't start after upgrading cpu

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:10 PM PDT

After installing a new ryzen 5 5600x cpu my computer won't start. It turns on runs for about 10 seconds clicks and the shuts down and then repeats that process.

I have a asrock ab350 pro4 motherboard which I believe to be the main issue. If anyone could confirm or deny that theory and possibly provide some troubleshooting or solutions that would be great.

I built my PC but now it’s not displaying anything on the monitor.

$5000 First Gaming/Streaming PC Suggestions, Comments, Criticism

Details/parts below. Looking for suggestions, comments, and criticisms.

Suggestions for silent and ergonomic keyboard

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I have been using an ergonomic keyboard for a while now and I absolutely love it. I am currently using the Logitech K350. However, now that I work from home more and more it would be time to find a keyboard that is less noisy to accomodate my partner. I would be looking for a keyboard that has silent keys, specifically the kind of keys you'd find on a laptop (the sound of those is much less annoying). I have only found the Kensington K72357US to be good for the sound, but it does not look ergonomic at all, and I'm afraid my wrists are going to hurt quickly.

    Any suggestion ?

    Samsung SSD PCB enclosure?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:08 PM PDT

Due to an unfortunate accident, my brand new 860 pro 2tb was trampled over and the enclosure caved in.

Miraculously, the pcb survived. I took it out of the enclosure, connected it via sata and the PC recognized it. No signs of damages to the pcb either.

I don't wanna continue using it without an enclosure and definitely not with this broken enclosure.

Is there anything I could buy as an enclosure which still exposes the sata connections, not USB?

I've been looking around but can't really find anything. The closest thing I've found was this but that wouldn't be usable due to the standoffs and already installed sata connector.

Is it worth the cost for a CableMod 12 Pin Micro-Fit PCI-E for Nvidia 30 series for the 3060TiFe?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:08 PM PDT

    PC Parts Relative to Topic

    1. Corsair SF750W (got it today)
    2. 3060Ti FE (love those Best Buy drops)

    Other PC Parts:

    • Cooler Master NR200p / Gigabyte B550i / 16gb g.skill flare / 970 evo plus / Pending Mugen 5 Black Edition with 4 Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM black fans

Details: CableMod is selling their own 30 series cable: Overview Image, 12 pin connector, and the two 8 pin connector. Their selling at $32.90 + $20 shipping. I know that Corsair sells their own adapter for $20 at Best Buy. On cost alone, BB is a better choice. On custom, Cable Mod. On cost with delivery, BB is a better choice because I got the PSU & 3060Ti FE that the cable was design for..

I haven't found any video of anyone using this exact cable from Cable Mod. I've seen reddit post talking about it with images. Logically, the BB cable for $20 is the better choice overall. Of course, I got a PSU that is complete overkill for the 3060Ti Fe. so. I got the $ but I'm trying to determine if it is actually worth the cost for a dam cable.

    BSODs driving me nuts

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:01 PM PDT

I've been getting a single BSOD ~once every 10 days or so, but it's still driving me crazy bc its a continuous problem. I've tried researching as much as I can and I cannot for the life of me, find a solution. I've tried running sfc, tried running Driver Verifier (which did help get rid of 2 faulty drivers, but the BSOD still occurs).

The BSOD states a handful of things such as "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL", "SYSTEM EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED" and stuff like that. The driver has 9/10 times been "ntoskrnl.exe", which is a windows driver. As well as recently "HIDCLASS.sys".

Now, I also ran the memory scanner to check my memory, and all things came back without issues. However, I am running my memory at 3600mhz, with a Ryzen 7 3800x, which it is rated to do no problem.

If anybody could help with this, I would be extremely grateful. Will provide dmp files if needed
