    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember: build a computer is not as hard as you think, and computer parts are not as fragile they look!

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 08:07 AM PST

Building a computer for a novice could be extreme scary: you spend a lot of money for every part of you computer and you are scared as hell to break something. The truth is that computer parts are not as fragile as you think, most of them are built to be resistant. Just do everything while your computer is turn off and the psu is unplugged. Look a tutorial on YouTube and learn everything about building a computer and so on. Use your first build to improve your knowledge about and you will find it less scary and more intuitive in the future. But remember: if you are scared to even touch your gpu, cpu and so on, just don't. Be careful but not scared.

    Built my first PC!

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:18 AM PST

I had previously had a post about what could have happened when my PC didn't turn on. Turns out, the PSU had an error and drew too much power, frying itself as well as the motherboard. So my plans to build a new PC this June when I turned 18 where gone, but the money with which I would have bought this new PC was available right now, so I wouldn't have to go 4-5 months without a PC. Of course, GPU shortage hit me as well, so I have to go with a 6-year-old R9 280X until I can get my hands on a new GPU, preferably the RX 6800 or maybe even the RX 6700XT.

    Stop panicking about VRAM

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 07:15 PM PST

I've seen some people panicking about how they don't think they have VRAM because of the 3060's stupid amount of VRAM. Don't worry they only did it so they can say AMD didn't beat them in a single spec.

    My (humble) first ever build

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 07:45 AM PST

After almost 20 years using mac mostly because of work, and console gaming I decided to give the PC world a try since a bunch of my friends play there and what an exciting and (a bit) trilling experience! From doing research to choosing the parts, hunting deals, the expectation until the building day and... it did turn on well in the first try!

Now I am doing finger gymnastics with Left 4 Dead because I suck at WASD and I still get instant killed in CSGO, but super happy with it!

Tips on transporting a PC safely?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 06:35 AM PST

I'm moving 4 hours away in April and want to make sure my PC is 100% safe & secure during the move. I know I should take the GPU out but are there any other tips or things I need to do?

I accidentally broke off and lost some capacitors on my 3080 while installing a waterblock but I found out what they were with some googling and fixed it!

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 01:30 PM PST

Just wanted to share my joy that I didn't fully break my gpu I had been waiting months to get. Luckily they were capacitors for one of the pcie lanes so was able to figure out what they were since they are pretty standard. Anywhere else I probably would have had to send it away to evga. Luckily I am not new to soldering and had the tools because those tiny 1mm smds were daunting.

First PC build around a GTX 1050 ti

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:16 AM PST

Hi everyone! My Lenovo Ideapad 305-15IB laptop, which I have been using as my primary workstation since 2016, is slowly dying on me so I have to build a PC ASAP, chip shortage be damned. I managed to get a GTX 1050 ti (please don't ask me how much I shelled out for it) and now I am putting my build together, so I thought to run it by you guys, just in case I screwed something up (as a first time builder I am nervous AF). Here's what I currently have in mind:

As far as gaming is concerned, I've only been able to play Victoria 2, SimCity4 and Starcraft 2 (which started lagging like crazy at around September and I haven't played it since) on my old laptop, so anything more than these games that the GTX 1050 ti could run would be a blessing for me. I also have two 60 hz Dell P2417H 24 inch monitors, which might bottleneck some games, so my gaming ambitions aren't too high on this setup. I just want everything to run OK when multitasking with R Studio, Adobe illustrator and a bunch of other apps open. Any suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Top exhaust necessary?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:09 AM PST

So I'm looking for a case for my build and I kinda narrowed it down to to candidates: Sharkoon VG7-W Fractal Design Focus G What I'm asking myself now is if the closed top on the Sharkoon will obstruct general airflow? I like it for the cable management options (psu shroud, closed back) but three fan mounts is limiting. The Focus has a bunch of them, is it worth it?

    I plan to run a i5-9600k and a GTX 1660 Super

Conceived a year and 4 months ago, in the making for half a year, and now ready for 2 very special titles.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:05 AM PST

Ever since Death Stranding was available to pre-purchase on Steam I swore I'll upgrade my computer, and when Half-Life: Alyx was announced I knew I'll get into VR as well.

When I got it, it was an office device- a Pentium, GT 630 and 4GB of RAM. I later got a GTX 1050 Ti, then upgraded my mobo, CPU and RAM to an i7 8700 and 16GB of 2666mhz cl19 RAM.

This build inherits the processor and motherboard, but everything else is completely new. It took me 3 days in total, and this is the result.

Here is the PCPartPicker list, and I'll give a short thought of the parts:

CPU- good performer, shame it's not overclockable.

Mobo- neat lighting and easy to work with, I just personally don't like the red accents.

Cooler- had a bit of trouble mounting the second side of the mount if you screw it any further than 2 spins. Got a second F12 fan for it as well.

Thermal paste- nice of it to come with alcohol wipes.

RAM- the heat spreaders feel like they can cut your fingers, other than that really nice lighting and XMP worked without any issues.

GPU- got it before prices in my country spiked up (still wasn't cheap, but had to get it), and it sags a wee bit. Currently downloading a library of games I wanted to play and I'm planning on overclocking it, so we'll see how it performs.

SSD- going from half a tera HDD to a tera of SSD feels liberating. I've already filled up 400GB with games, and I'll download VR and personally favorite games on it.

HDD- I'm imagining I won't need a storage upgrade in a short while now, and I'll download big games on it to spare my poor SSD's eyes of those games' file sizes.

PSU- the cables are flat, awfully stiff and very inconvenient to work with, especially when I also used fancy combed extension cables to decorate my system. Nothing a bit of shoving into the HDD bay and PSU section can't solve. Would still recommend investing the extra 25 bucks in a Corsair PSU with round sleeved cables, like the RMx series.

Case- very clean and has plenty of hooks to tie cable ties to, but since it's a mid-tower it gets tight to work in, so I recommend working on the mobo as long as you can, and mount fans as the final step.

Wi-Fi card- the cables are surprisingly stiff, but the antenna base is very magnetic, so sticking it to the top of the case is very easy and it won't move anywhere.

A14 fans- I use them as front intake, and as per Noctua fashion, they're quiet and work nicely.

Industrial F12 fans- I use them as exhaust, and they're not as convenient as the chromax fans with their detachable cables.

Can't wait to finally enjoy Death Stranding and Half-Life: Alyx, I've been waiting for this for so long.

Building a gaming pc and need all the help I can get?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 01:50 PM PST

Hi reddit! For a long time I've wanted to build a gaming PC, or at least be able to assemble really good parts and have a friend build it for me. The problem is, I have no idea what I'm doing or what it all means. I've tried looking up good builds and it's all just really overwhelming and confusing. I was hoping you all could give me any sort of advice and information to get started? I don't have a budget currently, but I was hoping to not exceed $1000 at least at this moment. The types of features I'm looking for is just a lot of storage, excellent graphics, a great cooling system, and a high quality power supply. I will appreciate any and all expertise you all can give me! :)

Edit: Also if you have any good sources and tricks to getting quality parts for cheaper than listed would be greatly appreciated!

    LAN Indicator Header

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 06:28 AM PST

Has anyone seen a motherboard with a LAN indicator header (or two) on it? Not on the LAN port but separately on the board. I have not, commercial or consumer grade. I just bought a case that has two LAN indicators on the front. Great idea but seems impractical. Thanks for your input.

Memtest86 RAM errors on same address

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 07:08 AM PST

Hi, I've built a new PC and I've run this test for almost 2 passes and got 12 errors. All the errors occur in the same address and it seems like a 1 is added into the same location. Do you think this is caused by a bad RAM or CPU or motherboard? I'm running Crucial Ballistix 3600MHz CL16 2x8GB sticks with a Gigabyte Aorus Elite B550 AX V2 motherboard and Ryzen 5 5600x. Thanks for all your help!

    650W+ PSU recommendations?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PST

It's time to replace my crappy CWT 500W PSU for something more powerful since I recently got an RTX 3060. What PSU above 650W can you recommend? I was thinking of an EVGA BR 700W for $80 USD on Best Buy, or maybe even a Thermaltake SMART 700W for $60. Are they good brands? Are there some I should avoid or some I should consider? Thanks.

May not be as good as others, but I can finally "game" on my OptiPlex 3060 SFF.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 06:56 AM PST

I got a hand-me-down Dell OptiPlex 3060 on my birthday and have been slowly upgrading it. Slowly saved up and now, 6 months later - I can finally enjoy and play some old titles at a decent enough rate.

Been a while since I experienced the joy of being able to run games without it being a slideshow, so I just wanted to share it you all.

    Specs:

    i5 - 8400 @ 2.8ghz

    16GB 2666 RAM

    GT 1030

    Crucial MX500 250GB M.2 SSD

Please help. I don't know what SSD to get or how to optimize storage

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 02:16 PM PST

I'm looking at the 870 EVO. Are there any significant speed differences or reliability differences between 500GB and 1TB? I saw something about 300TB or 600TB Endurance (TDW) on the 500GB and 1TB models respectively.

I also have a 2TB NVMe. Should I put Windows 10 on the small SSD and keep it separate from my programs/files? Would clean installs be easier?

Everyone seems to say NVMe would be better for the OS, but then I look up comparisons and its maybe a couple of seconds shaved off boot times and such.

What is the best way to set up storage? Where should I put my large games and programs? I have HDDs too.

I also really need an easy way to move all of my programs/documents/pictures etc. off of my current SSD so I can temporarily store them on my HDD. I need to format my current (old) SSD and move it to a different system because I'm putting W10 on the 870 EVO.

    Help for a dummy

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 02:14 PM PST

Hello all. Just did a fresh build but pulled my processor and my m2 SSD from my old PC and put into the new one. Boots fine, gets to log in screen but does not recognize Ethernet connection; no internet. My windows 10 won't let me in as it is not connected to the internet and won't recognize my PIN or allow me to reset password. I believe the network drivers for the new motherboard are not installed

How do I get Ethernet drivers onto this PC without being able to log in??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Help! Computer will boot to bios in safe mode, or else black screen and fans 100%

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 02:02 PM PST

I built this pc (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XLh8wz) about 3-4 years ago and never had any issues turning on/off or restarting my pc. Recently though, whenever I've tried turning it on, only a black screen appears and the fans go full speed. When I interrupt and it goes to safe mode, it'll boot to bios just fine and then windows. I've checked the power supply, graphics card, and ram and those don't cause the issues (I'm pretty sure). Also when i boot regularly, the cpu led turns on then off, the ram one turns on then off, but the vga and boot device ones never turn on.

Has anyone had this issue and found a solution? Thanks!
