ASUS RMA Advice - Take pictures of your hardware before you send it in to ASUS support Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:49 AM PST I've been working on a lengthy BSOD issue detailed out here - https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/lhc2tw/random_crashes_and_bsods_on_new_pc/ Right now I've RMA'd the CPU and got a new one from Intel which is the good news. The bad news is I send in an RMA request to ASUS for the B460-I motherboard. I paid for shipping and sent it back with the original box with the CPU cover on per their extremely specific instructions. A week later I get a message back from ASUS support saying they won't honor the warranty due to "Customer Induced Damage" with a picture of the CPU pins. From the picture they sent me it looks like they hit the pins with a hammer and they want $85 to repair it (https://i.imgur.com/lS2732t.jpg). It's extremely weird since it looks like I wouldn't even be able to install a CPU on the board now with so many bent pins, I had a CPU installed before, and I inspected the board for bent pins before I sent it in. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the CPU pins before I sent it in, just the motherboard itself with the CPU cover on it. So, if you're ever sending something to ASUS for an RMA, make sure to take LOTS of pictures of the part at every angle. After doing some research on ASUS RMAs it seems like they reject warranty requests for even minor things like cosmetic scratches or missing screws. At this point I refuse to give ASUS any more money. I'm cutting my losses and I'm just going to buy a different motherboard. [link] [comments]
I’m tired of this GPU race against miners and the market. Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:28 AM PST Ever since October/November I've been researching all of the parts I needed for my first PC. A few weeks ago I bought all of the parts I needed except the GPU because I can find a 30 series anywhere near me. Nobody has them in stock and the miners are screwing gamers for greed. I'm mad at the companies for not implementing better regulations and I'm mad at the everyday people who bought out store stock and resold them for a profit. Fuck those guys. Now I have a big ass paperweight that lights up but with no card I can't use it. I have no integrated graphics so now it sits there. taunting me and I refuse to buy a card well over the MSRP. Now NVIDIA talks about making GPUs specifically for miners (check out LinusTechTips, he talked about it recently). This only furthers waste because those cards will be one-time use and even though they're meant for miners, those miners won't buy them specifically. So they turned a normal GPU into a mining card instead of just producing it for the general market. NVIDIA only cares about profits and are doing nothing or near nothing to help their consumers that are struggling to enjoy the very thing we want. To conclude, fuck the market. Posted: 24 Feb 2021 06:11 AM PST I have a dual 3090 build (don't roast me, its not for gaming or mining) and need to replace my PSU (1200W is causing crashes). However, based on searching for a few months now, it seems literally impossible (europe, UK) to get any psu that is 1500W or 1600W. I found this one in stock (SilverStone 1500 Titanium, https://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=758&area=en) which seems to be of high enough quality and standards. The 1500 watt would also be enough. My only concern, which I need your advice on, is that the GPU support list for this PSU (https://www.silverstonetek.com/downloads/PSU/GPU-supportlist.pdf, product number "SST-ST1500-TI") says "RTX 3090*1" which I think means only one 3090 and not two. Would I be dumb if I get this PSU anyways and run my dual 3090 system on it? The 1500 watt should definitely be enough. So, I don't know why it doesnt state support for two 3090s. Or I am just misunderstanding the meaning of "*1" [link] [comments]
Walmart stocking returned external hard drives as new (got scammed) Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:06 PM PST To the person who decided to buy a 6tb mycoplasma from Walmart, shuck it, fill it with sandbags, while not bothering to line up even the power/usb board. I hope your legs grow together slowly and painfully. Now that I have that out of the way, Walmart apparently Is just putting returned external hard drives back on the shelf instead of sending them back to the manufacturer or to its own internal claims department, I got a replacement 4tb (stock out on the 6tb) without too much hassle, but open it before you drive home To be sure. the use of sandbags tells me this is being done on a pretty huge level. At least here in Arizona. Stay safe and keep building! [link] [comments]
What some good cases for under $1000? Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:01 AM PST I know about the cases from NZXT, but I'm just trying to consider other options. Edit: Thanks for all the help. I'm just wanting to consider some of lesser known ones that are out there. [link] [comments]
NVMe drive heatsink. Worth it? Posted: 24 Feb 2021 04:55 AM PST Hi there, Since I'm already placing an order in AliExpress, I thought that I might as well order a heatsink for the WD SN750 I have installed in my PC. When I ordered the drive, I saw that one can chose to get it with a rather chunky heatsink already installed, but that was 12.00GBP so I opted out. Then I saw that there's a very similar one for around 3 or 4 quid in the aforementioned marketplace (see links below), I thought that it may be a nice addition to my setup for a fraction of the price. WD SN750 with original heatsink: https://www.legitreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/wd-black-sn750-heatsink2.jpg Chinese heatsink: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/media/image/thumbnail/HS00BJB_248870_800x800.jpg After reading a fair amount of information on the topic, there are difference of opinions about it, with some reviewers saying a heatsink will do nothing for you, while other defend that it will effectively decrease the temperature of the drive. On the other hand, there is also debate on if cooling your NVMe stick is actually beneficial, as it seems like the NAND chips are naturally more comfortable working at temperatures above 50C, while the controller chip should remain at lower temperatures. In short, my dilema is if I should buy the full heatsink, if I should get a smaller one that covers only the controller chip instead (https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1spz1aHY1gK0jSZTEq6xDQVXar.jpg) or if I should just ditch the idea and keep the drive bare-assed as it is now. Your thoughts? Any help will be appreciated :) [link] [comments]
Old PC is now barely hanging in there Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:32 AM PST Well my old PC is forcing my hand. Originally i was going to wait until the 3080 became available before building my new PC. bought a used ryzen 5 3600 on ebay and it has one bent pin. what should i do? Posted: 24 Feb 2021 12:11 PM PST there's also a slightly less bent one but im mostly focused on the bent-er one. seller said it worked just fine but it just arrived with this one single bent pin. it's enough to stop it from going in the socket on my motherboard, just at that one point. everything else seems to go in fine but it sits crooked in the socket. what should i do? Upgrading from 1650s to 1660ti worth it? Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:58 AM PST My brother-in-law scored a decent gaming rig from bestbuy this past BFriday, and he doesnt use it. He said he'd sell me the 1660ti for $200. Would this be a decent upgrade to my current setup (i7-4790k/GTX1650 Super) ? Im currently playing Destiny 2 on Mid settings @ 1440p with 120Vsync enabled on a Viotek Monitor, and I'm very pleased. However, that itch is always scratching to move up the tech ladder...lol I refuse to battle scalpers and pay inflated rates in the used markets, so I wanted some input. Thanks dudes/dudettes! Posted: 24 Feb 2021 06:37 AM PST I can't find anything to use with them, apparently some people use DVD drives or SD card slots but I can't find any anywhere. Where else could I look, or is it not really a thing anymore [link] [comments]
Is it better to build my own or get a prebuilt at this time? Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:50 AM PST So firstly I also want to upgrade the pc in the future. Also I don't know any good prebuilt and would appreciate some that would be decently good. And if I were to go with building it myself any good gpu or cpu that's cheap right now. Thanks [link] [comments]
2 Monitors at different refresh rates? Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:40 AM PST I currently have a 1440p 144hz Freesync monitor and I wanna get a second one that's either 1080p or 1440p but 60hz since it's not going to be used for gaming. I read that there's an issue with Nvidia graphics cards forcing both monitors into running the lower refresh rate of the two. Is there a fix to this? My cpu and gpu are Ryzen 7 2700x RTX 2070 [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Feb 2021 01:42 PM PST Hi, I bought some parts to upgrade my 2700x and 1080 to 5900x and 3080 but availability made me make the choice to sell back my new mobo B550 Taichi. I did also buy a 4x8 3600mhz ram sticks but I don't really want to sell those. I decided to "upgrade" to my 2700x and B450 Msi pro Carbon wifi (max 3466 mhz ram tho), launch was good enough until the settings: I decided to manually disable A-XMP profile cause:
With disabled profile XMP I could use 3200mhz. Boo was fine until after like 10 minute it started rebooting by itself and a blue screen appeared with 10 options of Windows saying it's not unrepairable of some sort. I couldn't use any fix so I had to hard restart and put my old 2x8gb 3200 sticks when the settings remained untouched. Glad for me because i was scared to shit after this 1) What happened ? Disabling A-XMP profile doesn't work with manual and just putting 3200mhz ? 2) Does those ram are not for this specific mobo ? 3) help me to understand this please Thank you! Case with compatible rgb fans for older mobo Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:30 AM PST My friend has an older motherboard (MSI A78M-E45 V2 to be exact) which does not have any type of RGB headers. He is looking to upgrade his case, and loves some flair in the form of RGB fans (Something like the LC Power 703B). He bought the LC Power 703B a few days ago and is really happy with its design and looks, but because the fans are only powered via molex they run at 100% all the time and are very loud. Therefore, he wants to return the case again and is looking for a different one. I haven't had any luck with finding a case myself, but I hope someone can help :D Requirements for the case: - similar looks to the LC Power 703B - Adjustable RGB, either via a separate controller or via software on the PC - fans must be connectable to 1 Sysfan header (you'd probably need some kind of splitters) - fan speed must be adjustable with a fan curve so they can stay silent during idle usage and ramp up during gaming Here's an imgur link to the mobo's layout and the kind of case he wants: https://imgur.com/a/knFl5p9 [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:27 AM PST Getting LEDs to light up on the rear IO jacks, but computer won't boot. Nothing even momentarily to indicate a short. After many hours of researching, I made my first build, I would appreciate some feedback. Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:13 AM PST I am building mostly for Unreal Engine. I am not sure about PSU, I have read some comments that they are having some problems with cables being too tough and breaking MoBo or just a mess to deal with. Evga PSU are a bit pricey and read that some people have other issues. And can't seem to find a quality case for bit cheaper.

Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:10 AM PST Hello, I currently rock the below build. It was a good one back in 2015-2016 but now it's a bit outdated, to put it mildly. I am starting to feel the need to upgrade but am not in a rush. I haven't overclocked the CPU or RAM yet so I think these parts can hold up for a bit more time. (hopefully 1-2 years) Because of this, I've thought of doing an upgrade to the graphics card. I haven't been following much the scene for the past years and am not completely sure what would be a good fit. I usual do 1080p/1440p gaming and want to future-proof my 1440p gaming. I usually play competitive games (csgo, lol, valorant) but also like to play the occasional story game, if I have the time.If possible, I'd do some 4k gaming but I am not sure if this makes sense with a 1440p 144hz monitor. What graphics cards would you guys recommend me to get? I am open to either Nvidia or Radeon. Motherboard - ASUS Z170 Pro gaming Edit: I don't care for RGB. Have it or don't, I won't look at it. GPU Brand Differences/Vendor Pricing Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:10 AM PST I've been looking at the GTX 1660 Super for my first build. I was just wondering what the deal is with crazy price differences between some websites. ShopBLT and British Miners seem to be selling between 250-300, while you can't find them on Amazon or Newegg for anything under 600. Are they just scam pages? I understand that there are also differences between brand offerings of the same card. I assume its just cooling and RGB, but I figure I might as well ask. Thanks in advance. Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:07 AM PST I'm currently designing the first pc that I will be building. I feel I am very handy and don't fear the actual build process. What I do need help with is picking a case and someone double-checking that all of my components are compatible. Components; AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black G.Skill Trident Z 3200 (2x16GB) DDR4 Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2 2280 Seagate Barracuda Compute 2TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Radeon 5700 XT 8GB (whatever is on eBay) EVGA B5 650W fully modular ATX As far as a case, I would prefer black, cheap, and for it to have exceptional airflow. I understand Noctua coolers can be fairly large so that's my main concern. Thanks for reading and I hope you'll take time to help. [link] [comments]
My story of almost giving up on my gaming laptop (and why I love it even more now) Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:51 PM PST So this is a pretty funny story of how I almost gave up on a GTX 1080 laptop after I decided to clean its internals. For those who don't know, taking apart a gaming laptop can be at times very intimidating. To clean the fan I had to take apart about 16 screws haha. Very small ones at that. So after a nervous 30 mins. of unscrewing and keeping track of tiny screws, I clean the fans successfully, I put it back together, I turn it on. I turn it on, "no readable drive" At this point I'm thinking "why did I do that" why did I have to touch this piece of alien technology? I spend hours looking at YT videos about how to easily fix the error on BIOS. I tried every single one and still it failed. I keep unscrewing the laptop to clean the HDD and put it back. Nothing. I try to fresh install but it says I can't install windows on my HDD for some reason. But in the back of my head, I remember there was something off when I first unscrewed the laptop. This little chip hadn't been connected to anything and stood out like someone's belly does under their shirt after thanksgiving. "But I didn't find anything about that on google". Plus I found it that way when I unscrewed it initially (likely popped out when I initially popped the whole back off the laptop) So I ignore it. 2 more hours of failing. So now I'm about to give up and settle to have an ipad as my laptop forever. But then I decide to unscrew and look up what that chip was. It's an SSD. I look up what an SSD is and realize it's a drive, in my case, it is the main disk my computer booted on. What are the odds this laptop would work if I just plug in the chip to where it looks like it should be going instead of letting it stick out like a thumb? I boot it back up with zero hope. I wait, and it's been 3 seconds, 2 seconds longer than it usually takes to show the error. Loading screen....BOOM THE ROVER HAS LANDED. Let's just say I cherish my laptop a lot more now and I feel like I finally know a bit about how it does what it does. [link] [comments] |
