Return of UMPC, sub 11" laptops? Posted: 09 Jan 2021 04:29 PM PST GPD will start their Win 3 crowdfunding mid-Januar, Lenovo showcased Lavie Mini while GPD competition offers similar 7-8" laptops, some convertible and or with LTE/5G connectivity (like ONE-NETBOOK OneGx1). Latest Intel Xe graphics i5, i7 or super ultra low power Y models, even one Ryzen model in prototyping. Plus Nintendo Switch success/existence. Are we seeing a sort of return of UMPC type of devices? Amount of development and releases seems quite high for long gone sizes while the price isn't lowest, higher than bit bigger tablets with integrated keyboard and similar Y or low power CPUs running Windows (not to mention Android). Local retailer is selling 3060 6GB and 3070 8GB notebooks before they're announced Posted: 09 Jan 2021 09:33 AM PST I might be wrong but I don't think these have been announced yet and it's gonna happen next week at CES [link] [comments] |

Posted: 09 Jan 2021 05:33 AM PST Some investigations were done in the past: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ternary_computer Yes, the archaic understanding was that it was easier to increase computing power by keeping it simple (on/off), but as we come against so many hard walls to increasing performance approaching 2021 and beyond, is this still really true? I don't believe it has been looked into deeply in modern times (except maybe quantum computing where there are more than 2 states). Certainly tri-state gates exist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-state_logic Trinary computing for storage, communication bandwidth, complex logic, processing speed - this could be a revolutionary paradigm shift towards increasing these aspects and more in orders of magnitude in a short space of time... One could also ask why stop at Trinary? - when we could have many more states than 3 too - it remains to be investigated what would be the optimum number we could achieve with the technology that we currently have and reasonably develop in the short term future. It would be interesting to discuss this with an open mind... [link] [comments] |
