This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

I built a decent Gaming PC for $206 using used parts from my local area...

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:53 PM PST

DISCLAIMER: I sourced these used components over the last few weeks in my local area (SF Bay CA). Where I live, there's a pretty good selection of used PC parts so your mileage will vary depending on where you live. But I just wanted to put it out there that many of you can definitely build a decent gaming PC for $200-400 if you are willing to spend the time to hunt for deals in your local area, especially if you live in/near a metropolitan area.

    pics

    Parts List

    CPU: Intel Xeon e5 2620 v3 6 core/12 thread - $16 eBay

    Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X99 - $85 Craigslist

CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 - $20 OfferUp

    Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR4 2400 MHz (CPU reads a max of 1866) - $40 OfferUp

    Storage: WD 640GB HDD 7200 rpm - $10 Craigslist

GPU: EVGA GTX 960 SC 4GB (I actually bought 2 at once for $75 on Facebook Marketplace, sold one on eBay for $100 essentially GIVING me $15 (after eBay/PayPal fees) and a free GPU)

Case: Phanteks prebuild case w/ 3 RGB Apevia fans - $30 Craigslist

    PSU: Corsair CX600 - $20 Facebook Marketplace

Total (including the $15 I gained from selling the extra GPU): $206

I can happily play CS:GO, Apex Legends, Fortnite, GTA V and many other games at 1080p at medium settings or better and get 60+ fps. With a better GPU and a little more money, you wouldn't have any issues getting much higher FPS.

So let's break down these components a little bit more and talk about which deals will be harder to replicate if you plan on doing something like this.

Firstly, the CPU is actually the easiest part to attain on this list. These can regularly be had for $20 off eBay. This particular X99 motherboard is VERY NICE for $85 (I actually got it for $70 but paid $15 for the OEM IO shield off eBay because it didn't come with one). It's a quality mobo with 8 slots for RAM so upgrading RAM on this will be as easy as buying another kit of the same capacity and as time goes by and RAM gets cheaper, you could just keep doing that if you wanted without having to get rid of your previous RAM. But finding this exact motherboard for the price may be difficult.

Luckily there are X99 motherboards being made out of China right now using recycled chipsets for about $60-120 depending on the particular models (available from AliExpress). Some of these motherboards are actually pretty good quality, but definitely do your research first. I recommend checking out Miyconst on YouTube. This Xeon/X99 setup is pretty popular in Russia because of hardware prices and availability so this is a Russian guy who reviews all of these Chinese motherboards in great detail.

The CPU cooler will be easy to find for about that price. Even new, the Hyper 212 is only $35 but if you buy used just make sure you get the LGA2011-3 hardware necessary for securing it to the motherboard. $40 for 16GB of DDR4 is a good deal but I've seen this same deal pop up a few times but more often at $50. Finding used but working 500-1000GB HDD's for $10-20 is quite easy but I recommend only using this as a storage for games and re-downloadable files. I planned on having a m.2 SSD in this rig but accidentally bought a SATA m.2 drive instead of NVMe (SATA m.2 not supported by this motherboard) so I will still need to upgrade that. But any SSD for your OS and important files will do and you can find these for around $30-40 for a 256 GB SSD new, maybe $10-20 more for an NVMe.

The GPU of course is where the real bargain hunt will be. In 2021, GPU's are super overpriced but I had seen another 960 4GB for $40 in my area after purchasing 2 of them for $75 total, so getting one around $40-60 is definitely possible. This is where I'd upgrade first (after an SSD). Other higher performing options would be the R9 390 8GB (recently purchased one for $80 and another for $100), the RX 580 8GB (recently purchased one for $125 but seen them locally for $150) or even a 1080 (purchased one for $200 but have seen them go for $260 locally). Really, any decent GPU you can find for around $50-200 would be great with this build. I recommend referring to this Tom's Hardware List to see where GPU's rank overall when you're shopping for a used GPU. This part will be where you'll spend most of your time hunting, but those elusive GPU deals are out there!

This case was a good find but I had also received a FREE CoolerMaster ATX case not too long ago, with 3 140mm fans included, in great condition. People often give away or sell their cases for cheap because they take up a lot of space. Look for one with fans included and even better if it comes with screws/standoffs.

Finding a 500-700W PSU for $20-40 is not difficult but this is a component that many people would just prefer to buy new and I don't blame them. At least by 80+ Bronze if you go used. But honestly, I think I'd rather buy a used PSU from a reputable brand than a cheap, new PSU from some brand I never heard of.

Overall, this was a fun build to make and I love reducing e-waste so buying used is good for me. I highly recommend though that you have all the appropriate screws/hardware when buying used parts so ask about that stuff when you purchase something and if it's not included, buy that replacement hardware online before you start your build because it's frustrating to start putting your PC together and then realize you don't have enough screws, etc. It's a little more of a hassle but you can save a lot of money!

Feel free to ask any questions, this is only my second PC build (just started last month but have been diving DEEP into PC building rabbit holes online). But I hate when people on this sub instantly shoot people down asking about $200-400 PC's saying it's not possible. IT IS POSSIBLE, but you have to get creative and it also helps to live in certain areas I won't deny that.

    Second gpu for second monitor

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 05:26 AM PST

Alright , straight to the topic, i got gifted a second monitor which has only vga for input. My zotac gtx1060 doesnt have vga output.Tried numerous adapters but none are working. Not really too into the idea of buying a 20 € adapter tha might fail me either.Basically i have a very old gpu sitting around and i was wondering if i can use that one to power my aecond monitor. If i can do that is there a way to tone down the power usage of the second gpu since it wont be doing much? And last but not least any major drawbacks(sound doesnt really bother me since i wear headphones)?

    Has G.SKILL stopped making 2x16GB DDR4-3600 CL14 RAM Kits?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 05:15 AM PST

Not sure if there's anyone from G.SKILL or has connections with G.SKILL on here. I reached out to their customer service over a week ago but haven't heard back. They do not show as EOL on their website.

G.SKILL has 5 2x16GB DDR4-3600 CL14-15-15-35 1.45V RAM Kits. The only differences between them are visual.

One of them can be found on Newegg, one of G.SKILL's official retailers for the United States, via filtering. The other three can be found via Googling. One can't be found at all. EVERY SINGLE one of those four on Newegg shows as out of OUT OF STOCK with the message This item is currently out of stock and it may or may not be restocked. Unlike other items that sell out, there is no option to Notify Me. Links are as follows:

Same applies for their 4x16GB with the same speed/timings:

Because of my AIO and case, I can only fit the Ripjaws V series RAM. I'm kicking myself for not buying these at $269.99 holding out for a sale, and I'm kicking myself again for not buying them at $289.99 before they became unavailable.

If someone is able to verify if they've been discontinued, for Intel 10th/11th Gen, which of these would you recommend, all in 2x16GB:

Are Intel CPUs still better for gaming than AMD? Not sure whether to wait for Rocket Lake or not.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:18 AM PST

I'm not super familiar with computer hardware. I'm looking to upgrade my old PC and build a new one from scratch that's used only for gaming. I'm not in a rush since my old PC is fine but I'm also willing to build now. I remember when I was building my current a long time ago that the general consensus seemed to be Intel was better for gaming and AMD was better if you were looking for a workstation. Is that still the case or is that oudated?

I know Rocket Lake hasn't officially been announced or anything but I figure if it's supposed to come out in March and Intel's typically better for gaming i'll just wait. Wanted to check with knowledgeable people though if that makes sense.

I can feel electricity on my pc srews and keyboard

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:34 AM PST

I have recently built myself a gaming pc. But then i touched pc metal srews with my wrist it kinda gave me not very painfull but noticeable pain. When i put my hand off it stops. It doesn't happen always, but it happens when i put my wrist on pc srews a few times. I bought myself an keyboard, it has metal parts on it. When i game on with that keyboard and sometimes touch metals on keyboard it gives me same pain when i touch pc screws. Does anyone know what could be the reason of something like this? I have in mind something but i don't know if that could be it. I think it could be loose pc case standoff with i screwed motherboard in. But i can't take that standoff off because it's stripped and if i would try to take it off i might accidently brake standoff hole and make it bigger and i won't be able to put a new standoff it that hole. And i know that motherboard doesn't have to stand on all of the standoffs. It needs to just not touch the metal of the case. But the problem is that if i don't use standoff there then that corner will be without standoffs and it could touch metal.

    for graphic design/video editing/high-end gaming, am I better off with a Ryzen 9 3900x or a Ryzen 7 5800x?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:32 AM PST

I managed to miraculously get myself a Ryzen 7 5800x from Best Buy to upgrade my Ryzen 5 2900x ...I know that either of the CPUs in the title will result in a performance boost but as someone who spends a LOT of time doing intensive Adobe stuff AND game FPS + VR, and considering the similarity in price, I'm curious which is the better option? I know the 9 3900x has slightly better benchmark score and Ive been told that for video editing at least the more cores the better.

I'm also curious if my B450 mobo will hold back any of that performance increase? I know the Zen3 CPUs only work on B450 with beta bios and I intend to eventfully get a Z570 but its not gonna happen anytime too soon. Thanks in advance!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

When I hibernate my PC, it goes to sleep instead of hibernating. I can still wake it with my mouse click, and I lose everything if I turn off the power (which is the point of hibernating). I actually got a few BSODs when I unplugged the power from the 'hibernated' PC to see if it really was hibernating. I just tried a fresh install to rule out those BSODs as a cause, and the first thing I checked was enable hibernation in the menu and try it, but it behaved exactly the same. One difference between when I sleep and hibernate is that when I sleep, I wake right back to windows logon screen, but when I wake from 'hibernate', I go through the ASUS BIOS screen first, like I would when restarting. This guy described the exact same issue here, with the same event viewer messages, but got no answers..

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Updated BIOS, updated chipset drivers, tried various combinations of enabling/disabling 'Fast startup', 'Hybrid sleep', etc. Also tried the same wherever I could find it in BIOS. It's now reset to default though. Also tried disabling/enabling hibernation.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Has anyone had a issue with ordering a part that still shipped after you cancelled on ebay?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST

I needed a cpu to finish my build and I decided to buy one of the new amd ones I found on ebay with a $100 markup but like a half hour later I decided to cancel and just wait to find one for a normal price.

Now I was issued a refund by the seller and a little while later I got notified they still shipped the item and its on the way to me.

The guy never messaged me or anything and I'm not sure what to do.

Looking for opinions about performance and safety after running Cinebench.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

Ok so, this is my second complete build, first time benchmarking and overclocking. The build is this:

    Asus Rog Strix z490-F i9 10850k @ 5.0 RTX 3070 FE 750W PSU Bronze NZXT Kraken X53 AIO

Updated to the latest BIOS and started testing again today. Ran the full 10 minute Cinebench, multi core test. 16173 Score. But here's my concern and where I need info: I had HW Monitor running during the test to see how it would run at 5.0. Are these numbers good? Safe? Bad?

Max voltage for any individual core was 1.496. Max CPU temp was 91.

CPU idles at around 35. Gaming usually caps at 77 when it's clocked to 4.8.

    So, opinions?

I’m new to pc building, and i’m still not 100% sure on what overclocking is

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:08 AM PST

I'm pretty new to pc building so i'm not 100% sure what overclocking is. I know that it's when you exceed the speed that was intended for a pc, but i still don't get if it's something that just happens when you put certain parts together, or if there's something the user needs to do to the pc to make it overclock (kinda like a jailbreak). I also don't get which parts of the pc can make it overclock. How do you know which parts can be overclocked?

Looking for a Monitor that suits my needs

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:39 AM PST

I am quite confused on what monitor and what specs I should get since my budget is around $220 and as far as I've searched, I couldn't find any monitors that I feel satisfied with.

The characteristics I'm looking for in a monitor are:

    1. Good refresh rate (144hz atleast)
    2. Good Color Spectrum
    3. Good Response Time, Good GTG
    4. 24" sized
    5. 1080p resolution
    6. Fits into my $220 dollar budget

    Any suggestions are appreciated :)

    Best PSU option?

Buying 3070 online @ Best Buy

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:44 AM PST

I've been trying to purchase a 3070 from Best Buy for two months. I've learned that they re-stock on Fridays anywhere between 10AM-1PM. So, for the last two months I've sat on the site refreshing over and over again and sure enough they slowly become available to click on "See Details". Then, when I click on "Add to Cart" it turns grey and says "Please Wait..." it then informs me that due to high demand they've added this additional step.. that in a few minutes the gray "Please Wait" will turn back to yellow and I'll have the option to "Add to Cart". So, I sit and wait and the second it turns yellow I click it.. then I am met with "Due to high demand we've added an additional step before checkout, please try again" but there is nothing to do other than refresh the page and when I do it shows as sold out.. So, how am I to buy this card on the site? Should I go there in person and stand next to the loading dock on Fridays until I see a box from Nvidia get unloaded?

Hi everybody, i need to refresh my 10 years old PC which was made for gaming (2500k, GTX 570),but later on was used only for very light work (browser, pdfs and office).

What i want to do is to start building a gaming ready pc, but i want to wait to buy the gpu and gaming related parts until i have some reason to play on pc (right now i prefer playing ps5 on the tv). It also has to be as silent as possible, considering it will run close to idle for what i do right now.

I already have: - Monitor: I bought the Xiaomi ultrawide monitor (3440x1440 144hz) so i can both do some multitasking now and gaming in future. I'm already using it with the DisplayPort on the motherboard and it works ok at 60hz (the 2500k is legendary), but i'm afraid everything will fall apart shortly (PSU already died).

    • PSU: Corsair RM750. It was an emergency because the old one died, and it was the only one available. I'm happy with it anyway, since it is ok for even a rtx3080 and its fan won't start until it reaches 40% wattage consumption.

    • Case: Phanteks P400A. I went with non RGB variant because i read that its fans are not PWM and i was afraid i could not set them to shut off at idle. So i prefer to buy my own fans.

This is what i need suggestions for:

    • CPU: it think the ryzen 5600X would be the best option. Its obviously overkill for what i do know, but it would be enough for a high end GPU.

-CPU Cooler: this is a part i would not but right now, but i'm reading that the stock ryzen fan is a bit noisy. So i have two options: using the CPU without any type of cooling or buying immediately a gaming ready cooler. In this case, i would go for a water cooled just for easthetics.

    • RAM: i saw a video from GN saying that 4 slots RAM is much better than 2 slots with the new ryzen cpu. Is this still true? In this case i would go for a 8x2, and maybe buy another 8x2 stick when i start gaming. Otherwise, i think i'll stick with just 16gb, if you think it's enough. Which type and frequency do you suggest?

-MOBO: i see a lot of options and i'm not really sure on what to pick, they all seem to have the essentials, which for me are m2 slot and fan management system. Considering that i will be using the video ouput of the mobo before i buy a gpu, it has to support 3440x1440, preferably up to 120hz. I looked up some motherboards and they don't seem to specify what version of hdmi or displayport they have. For that resolution i think it has to be at least hdmi 2.0/ dp 1.3.

Any other suggestions are well accepted. Thanks

Is a used GTX 980TI worth it in 2021?

There's a used KFA2 GTX 980TI 6GB OC for £150/169euros/205USD. It comes with the original box.

Should I consider buying it? What are your thoughts on it?

It would be mainly be used for 1080p gaming.
