This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Frustrated I can't even upgrade my GTX 960 while people complain about not being able to switch from a 2070 to a 3070

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:24 AM PST

Just ranting. I'm stuck with my old GTX 960. Now, I'd be more than happy if I could get my hands on even a GTX 1660 to get some decent FPS on new titles on my 1080p monitor. But lo and behold, even a budget card from 2 years ago is out of stock... My best bet at this point is going for a used 960 for an SLI config.

    EDIT: I'm in the UK

At risk of being downvoted for not worshipping a single chip, I just wanted folks o know you don't **HAVE** to get the lateat chip to have a great experience.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:47 PM PST

As folks are well aware Zen 3 came out a couple of months ago. Since launch it has been beyond a crapshoot for most folks especially new builders to get. The only repeated advice folks tend to give em is only get a 5xxxseries CPU as if it is the only option. Considering it isn't really realistic to get at the moment and probably not for quite some time I wanted to let folks know you can get a different chip than that and be just fine.

I know I know. "How DARE I go against the hive mentality and help folks who may want a nice build sooner!!! Reeeeee!!! Zen 3 is the only chip yada yada." I reality you can go Zen 2 or Intel 10th gen if you wanted and get close enough performance. Yes, zen 3 beats other chips, but not mindblowingly so especially at higher resolutions in most cases. GPU's are a different story and you can be better off at times spending more money there tbh.

So if you're in the market and don't want to spam f5, sleep outside MC, fight against bots, wait several months, play the discord game, pay scalping price, pay more for a chip you may not need, and/or try to hit a lotto Gen 10 intel (on sale right now anyhow) and zen 2 at or lower than msrp (currently available at msrp) are good alternatives capable of reaching 144hz+ in many games. They will also be good for years to come despite what folks may say otherwise.

If you want to just get a good build going and enjoy vs sitting around not a bad option. If you are okay with waiting around for some time or potentially overpaying then zen 3 may come around later this year or something. I went with previous gen as far as CPU's go you don't need to upgrade very often as they stay good for awhile for most folks. Due to this I can game at 144hz and not miss too much from single gen difference. Just letting folks know there are good alternatives to the hype alone.

You don't need to build a pc for school

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:59 AM PST

Unless you are enrolled in a phd program in machine learning and for some reason your lab refuses you to provide you with a pc and you have to finance a 6k$ build yourself. Or you are a 3d modelist at the end of your curriculum and you need to render scenes, most of us do not need the processing power. That include you CS students, you don't need 8 cores 16 threads to sort an array or invert a binary tree, most of what you'll run can be processed on a 5 year old smartphone. I mean that litterally, when I studied CS half a decade ago I was running code on a low end smartphone that was already a few years old. That being said I do not recommend to run code on your phone but it's not the point being made. If you don't need the processing power the portability and versatility of a laptop will outweight any advantages of a desktop you build yourself. Yes the 400$ build you made with a ryzen apu will outclass any similarily priced laptops, however your 10kg tower, your keyboard, monitor and mouse may be a little bit frustrating to use on the train, in class, at the library and when you're traveling back and fourth between your dorm/appartment and your parent's place.

If you want a desktop for gaming, say you want it for gaming, we're not your parents you don't need to justify your expenses to strangers on the internet.

If you're on the laptop train, do not take a gaming laptop, if you want to be stuck on a power socket with a christmas tree panini press that weight and sound like an Airbus get one but otherwise don't. Even if gaming laptops have come a long way since last decade they are still the worse of both world.

From that point you have two options, either go with the cheapest win10 laptop with an ssd and enough ram as your workstation or get a professional ultrabook. As a student I chose the first option, you can also get a used macbook pro they're great for coding, and retain their value well so you can resell when you upgrade. Of couse if you can you can also take the other option of the professionnal ultrabook like the M1 macbook air or dell xps, they're mad expensive, and you won't be able to play games like a gaming laptop but they make up for it on everything else from battery life to keyboard, to build quality and display. You can also cut the apple in half and get a midrange i5 or renoir laptop though personally I'd rather either go all cheap as a student and all the way to high end as a working adult.

TL;DR: Mom, dad, yes I'm an english major but I'm telling you I need a gaming workstation desktop for school, yes the one with the lights on

Finished my FIRST PC / tips for beginner builders

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:50 AM PST

Im super happy, i have this pc for a couple of week now and everything runs flawless! i was shocked to find out everything worked first try, i really expected that i would have done something wrong in the build process.

when i started building, i was a complete noob, and barely knew what any of the cables were for, but this subreddit (and many more) helped me out with all my questions ;D thanks!

here are some tips for other beginners:

    1. Watch a lot of un-cut (live, if possible) pc building videos. this allows you to understand each and every cable, screw and slot. channels like LTT skip over this, because they make a lot of videos, and they arent going to mention what everything does in every videos.

    2. Dont spam all your questions on all subreddits, but try to search for your question in google, and type ''reddit'' behind it. this allows you to see if the question has already been asked before, and hopefully been answered.

    3. dont worry about the people saying ''installing windows and the drives is the hardest part''. for me, it really wasnt.

!!! 4. MOST IMPORTANT: ask people who know a lot about it, when the prices will drop! my pc part list was ready in sep 2020, at that time it costed a total of 870€. i waited untill black friday, everything had went up to 960€. i then bought a 1-week-used CPU for 200€ (new-price was 260€), and by the time my pc was built and everything was installed, the new-price of that same CPU had dropped back to 200€, because of christmas.

    my pc part list is:

GPU: AMD RADEON RX 5600 XT Sapphire Pulse

    CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 3600 3rd gen

    MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance lpx ddr4 2x8GB 3200mhz

    SSD: WesternDigital Blue 1TB m.2 2280

    CASE: Corsair Carbide RGB Spec-Delta

    PSU: BeQuiet! system power 9 600w non-modular

total build incl. windows was 950€. Country is the Netherlands

    Cheers!

Here's an open source RGB project without bloatware

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:00 AM PST

I work in software engineering, and this little project made it to the top of HackerNews today:

    https://gitlab.com/CalcProgrammer1/OpenRGB

Apparently many people like me are sick of terribad RGB software, that people are contributing to an open source project. I was able to get the 0.4 release work perfectly with my stuff (Asus B550, gskill trident neo). The latest 0.5 release is buggy on my board, but you might have better luck.

My board's BIOS does not allow me to control the Trident Neo without Aura software, and the latest Aura software doesn't work for me without installing the full Armory Crate. Anyone who is familiar with ASUS knows the words "armory crate" is taboo :P

This little project solves my issues completely. Give it a try if you've been hesitant to install RGB bloatware.

[Troubleshooting] PC randomly shut off and won't turn on again

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

    Specifications and components

    • Corsair 750D airflow case
    • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
    • NZXT X63 AIO Cooler
    • G.Skill 3600mhz 2x16GB
    • Samsung SSD NVME EVO Plus
    • Corsair RM1000x
    • Nvidia FE RTX3090
    • Motherboard Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Been using my PC as a background noise today when I was using my laptop for work, I was planning to open some documents on it so I keeping it running and pressing space when it would occasionally go to sleep. At one point I though it was going to sleep again but the PC just shut down and wouldn't turn on at all. It made a noise as I would unplug it from the wall and whenever I would try to turn it on when disconnecting from power the fan would spin for a split second and the PC would immidietly stop. I did manage to get it running and getting to the post screen but it would then immidietly stop anyway. The qcode screen on the motherboard would go FC > 14 > 15 > 14 > 15 and stop. I tried clearing CMOS, taking out one ram stick I checked the CPU pins and all look fine. Any ideas on what could fail?

Note: the cpu recently would randomly spike in temperature when turning on tinny programs. It would jump to 77c and drop back down to 50c in few seconds. In addition, the ram was overclocked as the ram is rated at 3600mhz.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, this is my first build and was really happy with it until now :/

    Regenerate an AIO water cooler.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:08 AM PST

Hardly rocket science but I've tried to regenerate a depleted AIO water cooler (Cooler Master Hydro H70) and it worked.

All I had to do was unscrew the water block, flush away the remaining older cooling liquid and refill it.

Distilled water with alcool could work for a while but for better results a bottle of coolant is way better (PC coolant is designed to avoid corrosion, something that will happen, sooner or later, when you have aluminium and copper in the same circuit).

Reseal, shake a little and... it comes back to life (provided that the pump is still working).

Not something that difficoult but still a nice thing, useful to keep your old AIO coolers in working order or to recover a dumped AIO and recycle it...

First time PC builder, not sure what to get for the power supply

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:25 PM PST

So I've got all the parts for my PC already, after a lot of learning from reddit and YouTube, but the last thing I need (except the GPU, those 3070s are really hard to get a hold of) is my PSU.

I have all my parts in PCPartPicker, even including my two monitors, but the estimated wattage is only 394W.

Looking at all the available PSUs, that sounds really low. Everyone I know has a 750W or 800W PSU, and that looks to be the most common ones sold, but that's double my estimated wattage for what I thought was a mid-high tier PC, which doesn't make sense. Am I supposed to do something else with that estimated wattage number, like double it or something? Or am I missing something important on my pcpartpicker list? Link below

Also, all that being said, what's a good brand for PSUs? I know it's really important so I don't want to cheap out. I've heard Corsair is good, is that true? Are they worth it?

    5600x vs 5900x

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:25 AM PST

    Hi, I'm finally upgrading from 4670k + 1070 to the new Ryzen. I'm running a 1440p 144hz monitor.

Now, I'm at a bit of a conundrum.

I can either get 5600x for ~330€ (5/10% overpriced but stock is low) and a better GPU right now, with upgrade to 5900x if needed

    OR

get a 5900x for ~560€ ( pretty sane price) right now and stay on the 1070, with GPU upgrade down the line, when stocks are better.

I do some gaming, and the 1070 holds its head above water for now. I'm mainly coding in Rust, Go, C++ and similar stuff, so the more cores would generally benefit my workload, but coming from 4670k , the 5600x might a be enough of a jump for now.

    What would you recommend ?

Got a graphics card and memory from a friend for a good deal, now I'm building my first PC! Looking for more experienced input on my build idea

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

So I'm in the U.S. and have around $1000 budget. I bought an MSI GamingX GTX 1080 as well as 2x 8Gb 3200Mhz Ram sticks.

I'm looking to be able to play some AAA games at decent 1080p settings, at a good 60fps. My bread and butter is modded Minecraft so I'd like to play that with somewhat high settings but nothing to crazy.

A big thing I'm looking for is a quiet build, as the PC will be in my room where I sleep, and ideally I'd like to leave Minecraft up and loaded since it takes quiet a while to load. So I'd pretty much be leaving the PC running so the quieter the better.

I'd also like to upgrade in the future so I'm hoping what I've picked allows for that.

So far this is what I've picked on PCPartsPicker

    CPU : AMD Ryzen 5 3600

CPU Cooler : Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler

Motherboard : Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard

Storage : Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

    And

Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Case : be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply : Corsair RM (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

If there are any improvements I'd love to hear them.

What kind of pc do I need?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:40 AM PST

I'm looking to buy/build a pc soon 1.2k or less, but I'm not sure how far I need to go with my build, mainly getting to play Minecraft with shaders, fl studio, and my school work. (Network security) at least 1tb ssd and 16gb of ram i know I want but when it comes to everything else I am a bit lost with all the options available. Being able to run shaders on Minecraft and maybe play some other games would be nice, I understand it doesn't take a lot to run Java Minecraft but I know shaders can add some strain to the machine.I'd be streaming as well.

    New PC died

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:07 PM PST

Hey, I just built my mini-itx pc on the 31st. It posted on the first attempt and worked fine, until it didn't.

Specs: CPU 5800x, Mobo Gigabyte B550i Pro Ax, GPU 3080 FE, PSU Corsair SF750, Ram: corsair lpx 32gb 3200mhz, Case NR200

I built my pc, everything worked and posted, no issues. Installed windows andI was gaming away. Until I heard some cracklings noise from the case yesterday, I thought it must be a fan hitting a wire, I checked no fan had any obstructions. Went into the bios to tune the fan, saved and exited.

The pc then just didn't boot into windows. All the fans spinned, including theGPU. I tried turning it off from the case power button, then led began to blink but didn't do anything . Soo I turned off the main power.

The pc wont post now. The rgb led fans turn on for a millisecond and the lights turn off. The fans themselves continue to spin at a high speed, including the gpu fan. The gpu leds is also off.

Now the single beep that indicates successful post doesn't happen (there's no noise). And I cannot turn off the motherboard either. Pressing abs holding the power button make the case led blink, but does not turn off the system.

    There's no debug led.

Things I've tried 1. Inspected all the cables 2. Removed the Ram (including a trying one ram, one ram in the other slot etc) 3. press the reset button on the case 4. reset cmos (by removing the power supply from mains abs shorting the pins on the mobo)

Is the problem in the motherboard or the psu? I'm concerned as there was a cracklings noise, and now the system wouldn't post. Could it be a bad psu? Or just a bad motherboard?

How the heck to get a 3060 ti

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:32 AM PST

Title more or less says it all. I've been told I should try to get the 3060 ti for my build then add up from there. But all of the 3060 ti I could find were ridiculously overpriced vs nvidias site cost.
Basically how do I find the not overpriced ones, and how do I know when they are available.

    Seasonic budget psu

    New build wont turn on

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:54 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

B550 AORUS ELITE (AX) Motherboard and aero cool streak case.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Put together a first build but it wont turn on. getting a blue light on front of PC but nothing happens when power button is pressed.

Ram sticks light up so there is power from the 24 pin connecter. CPU and GPU power supply is plugged in correctly as far as i can tell.

Molex connector from case is connected to power supply but the cable used has an additional molex and four pin (like the fan connectors) on it which do not connect to anything.

Fans are connected where they should be.

Front panel connectors are plugged in to the correct slots(audio,USB ) the power cables from the front panel are plugged in as followed. see linked schematic

    D_LED1 led +,led-,power switch

    LED_C1 HDD led

reset switch came plugged into connector which runs to front panel and does not seem removable

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. checked all wires are secure.

read articles and watched youtube videos to try troubleshoot but all seems to be correct

    Problem when switching off psu

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:48 PM PST

So, i had this problem for some time, but really didn't care that much. Basically the pc works fine, but if I switch the psu off (or plug off the psu cable, i had to move the pc) and then switch the pc on, this will turn on and then off, and after 5/6 seconds it will turn on again. After the first time it works just fine and it turns on without "cycling". What could it be? Could this be a sign of any sort of problem? Thank in advance
