This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Just spent 6 hours upkeeping my PC.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:02 AM PST

I have no idea where the time went. I thought I'd be at it for an hour or two, max. I mean, it was worth it, but holy cow.

Alcohol and compressed air cleaning all over. Surprised at how much dust was in it, especially considering I'm running positive pressure and keeping it off the floor. Improved cable management. I'm sure a hundred people could tell me a hundred things I could have done differently or better, but this is legitimately the best cable management I've ever done, and I'm so happy about it right now... even if it is mostly on the side behind a tinted glass panel and facing a wall...

Also did a successful SATA Power Cable reversal (I was so nervous about that), and did the washers mod on the 5700 XT. While in there I also cleaned the insides, and put on a nice layer of brand new Kryonaut. Not noticing significant temp differences, but I am getting a 5dB reduction from where I'm seated (33dB before, 28dB after), which is so incredibly nice.

Just... felt pretty proud of myself, honestly. Wanted to share it with someone. Have a nice day!

Edit: WOW! I was just feeling good about actually sitting down and getting this done. It's been hard to get motivated lately. This response has been overwhelming, and the fact that it's overwhelmingly positive has been pretty nice too! Thank you so much.

Here she is, back where she belongs! Don't worry, I'll be fixing up the office next, so that exterior cable management is going to be handled! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1momVBG5x7T6cuzZZklJCwcNYT9-76dVn/view?usp=sharing

Also, apparently some people didn't realize that I had a link in the original message, so here's the before and after link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/14mLdp4_5nLHnusj4cWvwq8bsmQjD7rVs/view?usp=sharing

This probably goes without saying, but always save the box and foam your case came in – there’s no safer place for your computer when you move.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:02 AM PST

While I feel like a lot of people save the packaging of nearly component in their PC, I'm sure many discard all of it.

As someone who has moved multiple times, having the original packaging of my case has been a life saver. The foam inserts are reliable and it keeps your computer fairly safe.

Obviously it's still fragile but a lot better off than on it's own or in a different box.

Do never install the MSI Dragon Center with a RTX 3000s Card

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:33 PM PST

I can't belive what i've experience with this piece of Software.

So i bought a new MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X Card. And i've installed most of the Software i could found for it. Was my first MSI product. The Card is just amazing. But then something went off. In every Game after 1 min or so. My FPS go Down. and my Whole PC start to stutter. Even if i left the game windows 10 stutter alot until i restart the whole PC..First i thought this must be a driver Issue but it was not..

At the restarts my windows 10 always said that it can't shut down because of "GSPY Hid Device"I read on reddit ;) that this is a false Message but have something to do with the MSI Dragon Center..So i deinstall the Dragon Center aaaaaand..

The FPS drops...the stutter...the strange noises from my PC was gone...

I don't know what they did wrong with this piece of Software BUT DO NEVER INSTALL the Dragon Center...

i hope this help some people that have the same issue

Should I buy now or wait?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:49 AM PST

I'm unsure as of what to do.. should I buy my PC parts now and wait another month until I get my monitor and other peripherals (Case, PSU, Keyboard, Mouse) or should I buy everything all at once? I'm afraid if I wait the parts are going to go out of stock, especially the CPU I'm getting.

    I'm getting the following:

    B450 Tomhawk Max

    1660Super

    Ryzen1600 AF

    16GB DDR4 3200

Fan tip no one talks about: Buy splitter cables if you have a lot of them.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:09 PM PST

I've heard a lot of advice about fans both here and on r/pcmasterrace. Enable PWM so they can run quieter at low load, set them in the correct direction, etc.

What no one seems to talk about is investing in splitter cables or daisy-chainable fans for builds which use a number of fans.

I have 9 fans including the CPU fan. What no one talked about is that motherboards only have so many fan ports, mine had 6 including a CPU and Pump port. While 3 of my fans came with a splitter, the other 9 did not. This meant that one of my fans (the top exhaust) was sad and had no port for power, and the rest were a rats nest of cables. I even had to cannibalize the Pump port for a fan that was definitely not used for a water-cooling pump.

I now have some splitters, and my PC is much happier.

Invest in a few 4 pin splitter cables if you plan on getting lots for your build, your motherboard may not have support for that many. You'll need a place to plug in all those fans, and it will help a ton with cable management. They're super cheap too!

Hope this helps. Maybe it's been talked about, but I've been on PC forums for a few months now and haven't seen it mentioned. It also didn't occur to me at all that MOBO manufacturers don't always plan for people to have an assload of fans.

UPDATE: More knowledgeable people than I have mentioned that if you go this route, check the maximum amperage for your fan ports. If they draw a lot of current and your board can't handle it when daisy chained that's a problem.

It's also been mentioned that most builds don't need this many fans. That's totally valid, I knew from the start I wouldn't need this many. But since I had the budget, I decided to fill my fan spots.

If you're starting a new build, keep in mind that 9 fans is most likely overkill.

I should also add that I'm far from an expert. This is my first time building a PC, but I figured I'd share the info since it doesn't seem to be talked about often.

    Cheers!

Update 2: I just found out I'm on the hot page, wow! As a previous lurker on the sub, that's an honor! Thanks to everyone who sorted by new :)

New PC capped at 100hz with my 144hz monitor, help

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:40 AM PST

    Hello All,

I built my new PC which can easily handle 144hz and I also bought a Samsung C49HG9 monitor. The monitors menu says 144hz but I the option for 144hz doesn't appear in display setting, it's capped at 100hz. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's plugged in through the display port and, weirdly enough, when we originally plugged in the monitor to setup the new PC, 144hz was available and selected but after just randomly checking today, it's now capped at 100hz.

    Thanks!

Transferring All Programs and Files from Laptop to PC

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:26 PM PST

I'm building my first PC this weekend, and I want to find a way to transfer all my programs and files from my laptop to my new PC. I have quite a few mods for games like Fallout 4, and I don't want to have to reinstall everything, including all the programs. I thought I could clone the drive onto the NVMe SSD I'll be using in my PC, but I read that wouldn't work since the hardware will be different. Is there a way to transfer all my programs and files? I'd be fine with having to do a clean Windows install on my PC and then moving the other programs and files. I just don't want to spend another 6 hours re-downloading and configuring the stuff I've already fixed.

Continue with scalped 3080 purchase or go 10 months without a GPU?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:56 PM PST

I know buying from scalpers is highly frowned upon (which I understand) but hear me out. I've been without a GPU since September as I sold my 2080 expecting to be able to buy a 3080 at launch, considering I was able to pre-order the 2080 last time round.

I managed to secure a scalped sealed 3080 asus Tuf OC for £1030 (they retail here for £750-800) which have since gone up to about £1100+ on ebay. I was expecting to get that today but the seller sent it to the wrong address by mistake which is now being returned to him.

Meanwhile there have recently been leaks coming out of 3080ti variant which would obviously be much more future proof in the long run, but if i get a refund from the scalper for the 3080 i bought I could realistically be waiting until June for these cards to be purchasable as it doesn't appear as if stock is going to match demand anytime soon, meaning i will of been without a GPU for 10 whole months.

What would you do considering my situation? I am currently struggling to get by on a Ryzen 3400G.

    Upgrade path from i5 9400f

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:48 AM PST

Hey everyone, got a question. I have an i5 9400f on a B360 motherboard, RTX 3070 and am playing on a 1440p monitor, what cpu should I upgrade to to feel a difference ? I feel my i5 9400f is starting to stutter in certain games due to only being 6c/6t. I was thinking of either i7 9700 that I can put on my existing motherboard, or wait it out and then do a complete overhaul with new mother board and new generation of cpu's. Thanks for any feedback.

Can't get my system to post

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:45 PM PST

Hi I'm a first time builder and I'm having issues getting my system to post. I'm trying to do a bare bones post just to make sure all of my components work so I've just been connecting the 24 pin, the 8 pin cpu power, two 8 pin pcei into the gpu, and the power button. The rgb will light up on the motherboard, but nothing else. I don't have any qleds, RGB from the gpu or ram, and psu fan or rgb won't turn on. I've tried switching out my psu already as before I didn't have any power whatsoever. My specs are as follows

    Motherboard- Rog strix x570-e gaming

    CPU- Ryzen 7 3800x

GPU- Nvidia rtx 3090 suprim x

Memory- Corsair vengeance rgb pro 32 GB (2x16)

PSU- Gamemax rgb 850W psu (previously had corsair RM 850x)

Storage- 2 TB Samsung 970 Evo pro (2x1tb)

Finish my white/RGB budget teenage daughter build

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:47 AM PST

Hey folks, I'm about finished with my daughters ultralight build and missing a few components. Going for fun over function really here. She wont be doing anything heavy here.

Looking to get some decent RGB ram(based on this mobo and APU 3200mhz is too high?) and rgb fans/cooler that will synch with this mobo and/or this case.

Before the comments roll in, yes there is an APU and no discrete graphics. GPU market is a mess and this will be /okay/ for what she does in the mean time.

    New PSU: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/6Y66Mp/corsair-rm-2019-750-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020195-na

    Problem

A week ago, my 4.5 year-old PC build suddenly shut down and wouldn't start up again. After cycling power to the PSU, I could get another attempt. Each time, the CPU fan does a half turn, stops, and the CPU debug light on the mobo flashes briefly red.

I bought a new CPU, mobo, and RAM (new build above), perhaps foolishly did not replace the PSU, and finally got to try everything last night. Not replacing the GPU at the moment since things are out of stock. Same problem with the new parts, although now both the CPU and DRAM debug lights flash red. CPU fan does a half to a full turn before stopping. DRAM light might be due to incompatible RAM - never had to follow a QVL before, but it looks like others have had trouble with this mobo. I've tried moving down to 1 stick and moving it around the slots with no luck.

Figuring that maybe it was the PSU, I bought a new PSU today and have tried it with both builds with the same result, though this time I caught some burning smells. I don't smell burning smells from the PSU.

My best guess at this point is that the old PSU was bad and potentially fried both sets of other components. Any suggestions? It's not clear to me at this point which components are bad.

I got a new monitor for Christmas, the second i plugged it in, my FPS is now substantially worse, even after reverting back to just 1 screen

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:51 AM PST

As the title says, i really have zero clue as to what is making my computer terrible right now, considering that there's no correlation between the two. I once had 130 FPS in league, now down to a steady 17. And it's not just in league, it's also around 20 FPS on Minecraft and I'm honestly begging for any help at all.

Ultra HD, HD and SD not allowing 144hz refresh rate.

I recently got a PC and a 144hz G-Sync compatible monitor, I wanted to change the resolution to "1080p, 1920 x 1080" in my NVIDIA control panel, but it would only allow me to do 120hz refresh rate, but if I go to "1920 x 1080" under the "PC" category in this panel, it does allow me to do 144hz.

Hey. I'm building my first PC. I used PCPP for the parts list. I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind take a look at it to ensure it is a decent enough rig.

    Thanks

P.S. The 5509 XT is only there because stock is non existent on any GPU I want so it's temporary.

P.S.S I cannot wait for cards to go back into stock with school and my personal patience lol

Ryzen 5600x overheating with stock fan? Help!

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:14 AM PST

So I just built a new pc about two weeks ago and I wanted to switch To ryzen because everyone likes their chips, so I bought the 5600x. Last night I was playing wow and my game crashed several times so I installed a temp monitoring software and it told me the cpu was running at 86 C. I the pc put together by a local computer service because I bought all the parts from them and they said they would do it for free. I only have the stock fan on the chip and I went into bios and turned all the fans up to max but even then the chip is still reaching 80-85 C. How do i fix this? I'm not very good with computers and don't know what I should do aside from taking back to them to look at.
