This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    High PC Temperature Issue Resolved

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 02:29 AM PST

Ever since I bought my PC my cat seems to love sleeping on top of the PC. This has been a huge issue since my cat blocks both exhaust fans on the top, and the CPU at idle has reached 70-80 degrees.

My cat is a stubborn guy and he won't stop sleeping on top of my PC no matter what. So today I rigged up an ikea shelf to raise my cat up and allow airflow to continue out. I also still have access to the power button and USB ports.

Success! With my cat sleeping on top my CPU is back at 38 degrees idle! lol.

In case you're interested in the parts for the shelf,

My coworker looked at me in utter disbelief when I told him how much I spend for a good PSU

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 04:50 AM PST

I recently build 2 office PCs and told my coworker that I spend about 100€ or more for a quality PSU for my personal PC. His face was a mix of utter disbelief and disgust. He told me he just spends 20€ cause they keep breaking every 2-3 years.

    I wonder why.

    RAM question dont upvote

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 10:21 AM PST

    Hello,

I am currently in the process of going from DDR3 to DDR4. I recently purchased these for this purpose, however I just now found out that these 32Gb single sticks exist for the same price??

I'm confused, as far as it looks getting this single stick would: 1. double my RAM 2. save me money 3. use one RAM slot instead of two

Is there a "catch" or hidden downside I'm not aware of here? Why are 2x8gb the same price as 1x32gb of the same speed?

To new builders - it's not as hard as you think it is!

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 04:40 PM PST

From the help of everyone on this subreddit, I have built a computer that I have been happy with for over a month now. Just got a fancier case and power supply because I cheaped out on my original case.

I thought it was going to be a nightmare. But it's not. It's like putting LEGO together.

Putting the CPU in... definitely regarded to be one of the hardest parts. After all, the CPU is by far the easiest thing to break in any computer, and one of the most expensive parts. But it's easy as pie. Especially for Intel CPUs. Just be careful, and for the love of god, NEVER push on the chip. Screw the cooler down one screw at a time, each screw diagonal from the next, to ensure even pressure on the CPU while installing the cooler. If you're using a stock intel cooler, it will simply snap right on.

Cable management, also proposed to be a nightmare. It's not. Just take your time. Route your cables through the designated holes, one by one... until there's no more left to plug in. Don't leave cables flopping around, always tie them up, out of sight, to maximize airflow. That also brings to mind buying a decent power supply... that's the last thing you want to cheap out on.

Don't be anxious going into building a computer. Because you don't need to be.

i have 4 broken PCs. can i salvage their parts and make them into something new since i don’t have the money to fix them?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 05:32 PM PST

my dad was a computer builder. an expert at that, he built many computers. about three years ago he died, and because he was the only one who knew how they worked, they slowly fell into disrepair. one has a broken motherboard, another a broken power supply, etc. i can't fix these things because i don't have the money or the knowledge. in an effort to preserve his memory i want to take their parts and make something new. an amalgam of sorts. i'll take pictures of the parts i have if need be, but know that they were top of the line, cutting edge technology back then. i don't want these parts to go to waste and without a teacher i'm stuck.

    Troubleshooting Help:

**What is your parts list? PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor $574.99 @ Staples
CPU Cooler Fractal Design Celsius+ S24 Dynamic X2 PWM 87.6 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler $132.99 @ Newegg

Power Supply Corsair HX Platinum 850 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply $194.99 @ Newegg

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The computer doesn't post. QLEDs start at orange, after a few seconds go to red, then solid white, where it stays. No video output on the monitor, can't even get to bios.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I've tested on two different monitors, displayport and hdmi. I've replaced the motherboard twice, and updated the bios to the latest on each one. (Edit: added bold since people keep asking if I updated the bios even though I said I did. Reddit's famous attention to detail.) I've tested the GPU and RAM on my friend's build with an x470, they both worked fine. I tried booting without the SSD, and after a CMOS reset. I replaced the PSU with a new one. Nothing changed at all. I've reseated everything more than once, on each motherboard I tried. The only thing left seems to be the CPU. I've tried with the 8 pin to the CPU and with and without the additional 4 pin power cord. I've tried the GPU with a daisychain pcie power cord and two separate ones. I've tried every port on the PSU for those as well.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I've read several forum posts that said this problem was only fixed by replacing the mobo (I tried this twice) or the CPU (I haven't tried this yet because it's a very pricey CPU.). Is there anything else I could try still? I'm at my wit's end.

    I did it!

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 12:49 AM PST

I built my own pc! Everything went fine (except getting thermal paste everywhere when my AIO cooler didn't want to clamp on), then the moment of truth... Switching it on. Fans start. RGB comes on. No output to monitor. Bugger. Typical. What have I messed up? Reseat RAM. Nothing. No BIOS. Dammit. It's 10.30pm, I want to go to bed! Check connections. All fine.

Ladies and gentlemen, please check your monitor is not only plugged in, but also switched on!

At 27" screen size, is the jump from 1080p to 1440p super noticeable?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 12:02 PM PST

I'm currently on an old non gaming 1080p, which recently now makes noise when things happen on screen, and I'm wondering if with my limited budget , which is at most $300, I should go for a cheap 1440p or a better 1080p. Color quality, dark/light definition matters to me a good amount, so I'm wondering if I might be better off going with a quality 1080p.

Just wanted to hear your guys' opinions.

My RAM keeps corrupting extremely quickly. How to stop?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 11:43 AM PST

Long story short, I was getting RAM related blue screens on my 1.5 year old 16GB DDR4 Corsair RAM back in May. Replaced it with G Skill 16 GB, upgraded that to 32GB in August. Now I'm getting memory related blue screens again and Memtest encounters so many errors it can't even complete the program.

In just the past year $600 of RAM has been corrupted. For perspective. I'm on a well built, high-spec rig that I built back in July 2018. These memory are also what I suspect is preventing me from booting a USD UEFI to install Windows on a new M.2 I purchased.

How on Earth do I stop this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Looking for some upgrade advice.

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 01:56 PM PST

Hey all, my buddy is giving me his 1080 TI and some fans for Christmas. Right now my current rig has a 3GB 1060, I7-8700 and a Asus Prime H310 motherboard. My Mobo is super outdated at this point and was wondering what Mobo and CPU I should upgrade to that would fit the 1080 IT and future proof. Any advice would be appreciated since I've never upgraded my set up before, thank you.

Got my friends old 2080, I already have a 1080ti, is it even worth swapping?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 09:32 AM PST

Ive looked up benchmarks, but they look really really close. Have new driver updates made any big gains in performance for the rtx cards? I would test it myself but its got a waterblock on it so Ill have to do some modifications to my loop to get it in so I figured Id ask before tearing things down.

    PC causing breaker to flip

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 09:01 AM PST

Like the title says, my PC seems to be causing our breaker to flip very sporadically. It doesn't line up with times the pc has been on for a long time (45 minutes last night) or under a heavy load (just an indie game last night). It's happened probably 4 times in the last 2 months.

From looking at similar posts, the answer is always "it must be something else on that circuit" but I made sure this last time that almost everything on the circuit was turned off, and I've managed to have the pc, another computer, and a space heater running without issue on this circuit, so it doesn't seem like excessive power draw is all that's happening here. The only possibility is that theres something in our downstairs neighbors unit that is on that circuit, but they've never mentioned anything to us. The last thing I'll try is switching circuits to see if the issue continues.

The alternate reasons this could happen that I've seen are a short in the wiring or a faulty power supply. To check the first one, I'm just going to take the whole PC apart and put it back together. I'm not sure what to do for the second one though, how do I check if a power supply is shorting? My only idea is to buy a new one and just see, then RMA the old one if the new one doesn't short?

Lastly, I've seen that UPSes have a circuit breaker. Would that flip before the main breaker? Can I use that to keep the rest of the circuit from breaking? And can I use that to see if the pc is causing the break or not?

    HDD to SSD questions

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 12:31 PM PST

I just got a Samsung Evo 860 1TB SSD, and am currently using a Western Digital 1TB HDD. I would like to have the SSD be the new primary boot device, and hold games, and use the HDD as a storage device for misc other things. I have absolutely no idea where to start and everything I try to look into leaves me more confused. Do I need any softwares to do this, or a copy of my OS? Again, I have no idea where to even start, help pls.

    greyscreen pc crash

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 10:46 AM PST

Hello everybody,I just experienced the first time my pc crashed after owning it for a year or two. Anyways, my screen turned grey, all the audio was gone and I couldn't just power my pc off with the power button, I actually had to turn it off with the power switch on the back. This does make me a bit worried. I know that my pc is getting a bit outdated but it still runs the games that I daily play so I'm fine with that. My current GPU/CPU combo is Gigabyte Radeon RX580 paired with a AMD Ryzen 5. I feel like it has to do something with that. I have looked up some things before on reddit about this issue but I don't fully understand it.Some help or few words of advice would always come in handy. Thanks for reading.

Here's the list of the problems i encountered (don't hesitate to ask if you have the same problem)

    - had to try 3 differents usb key to flash my bios (for 5600x compatibility)

    - When I removed the cooler, i didn't realised that the cpu was stuck to it , so i pulled it without even removing the socket lock, i'm really lucky to not have bend some pin. (don't blame me for this, i mounted more than 5 computers, never had this problem)

    Cpu stuck to the cooler

    - After reassembling everything, black screen. My asus motherboard was showing the green boot led and the white gpu led. So i replaced the gpu with an old one and got it to post but with an error message like "your graphic card doesn't support uefi so you are in CSM mode now" and it was working perfectly after that.

    - Aio started rebooting all the time, and all my usb peripherals was rebooting at the same time. So the solution to that was just replacing the cable from the pump. I don't even want to explain all the things i had to do to figured out that this was the cause.

    - And last problem, i had a lot of stuttering while playing games. Turns out that i was in 50hz mode instead of 144hz... (noob)

In the end, i'm happy. My previous build was an i5 4400 with a gtx 1060 3gb and 8gb of ram 1333mhz so for me the difference in games and perfs are like two different world.

Upgrade my GTX 1070 for a 2k monitor

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 02:16 PM PST

I just got a new 2k 144 Hz monitor. I'm looking to upgrade my 1070 to something that can run some newer games at my new high resolution. Right now I'm dual monitoring and running more demanding games on my second, 1080p monitor.

    My CPU is a Ryzen 5 3600X, ram is 16 GB DDR4-3200, and I have a 650 W PSU.

I haven't shopped around for a long time and I'm pretty out of the loop with the current GPU market so I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!
