This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

When you SHOULDN'T install everything on the motherboard before putting it in the case.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 07:41 AM PST

I should start off by clarifying that this only applies to people using larger air coolers like the Dark Rock Pro 4 or Noctua DH-15; if you're using a stock/low profile cooler or AIO, then go with the conventional wisdom.

If you have a larger air cooler, install the mounting hardware for the cooler, RAM, and any m.2 SSD's that you may have first, but leave the cooler off. Install the motherboard as normal, and then make sure you plug in your 4/8-pin CPU power connector and header cables from the case before doing anything else. I have plenty of cuts on my knuckles from trying to finagle the CPU power connectors in a cramped mid tower around the fins of a large cooler, so save yourself the headache and install all your motherboard connections first.

So I built a PC for the first time and learned a lot of things the hard way so you don't have to

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 05:48 PM PST

Hello everyone, I built my very first PC last week and it runs despite the multitudes of no-nos that I committed when constructing everything and want to share with the things I learned as a new person myself that I goofed up on and think new people will generally overlook when they build their PC.

    1. Build everything on a table.

I built my PC on my carpet floor because I'm a moron and did not think ahead about the serious possible fuckup that I could have made, when I had a perfectly good table I could have done everything on had I just cleared it. In case you don't know, carpet generates static electricity super easy and if you discharge on components by accident you can fry electronics.

Even if you don't have carpet and have a smooth floor, a table is just so much easier to work on because you're not hunched over trying to insert parts or screw in things.

    2. Install the I/O shield correctly.

I do not know how I missed this but I did and nearly snapped my motherboard before realizing what was going on. Seriously, triple check your I/O shield. It's easy to get fooled by it.

    3. Install everything onto the motherboard that can be managed outside of the case.

If you put the motherboard into the case directly from the box you are making so much extra work on yourself because now you're reaching around four walls that you don't need in the way. Easy things are RAM, CPU and CPU fan, m.2 storage, and other small components.

    4. Install power cables the easy way.

Before you insert your PSU try to put in all the plugs you need into it first and not the other way around. I wasted 2 hours on what should've been 20 minutes trying to finesse cables because I decided to do cable management ass backwards.

    5. Put things in their place.

Yes, you bought new, expensive, and potentially fragile pieces of equipment and you're scared of breaking something. These components are far less fragile than you realize and things must be firmly connected. Simply put, when installing things like RAM and the GPU, you need to keep adding pressure until you feel it click into place.

Obviously don't use the force of Zeus to put things in but you need to make sure things are fully installed it else the system won't recognize it or have improper connections and whine. I discovered this issue when I did a benchmark and half of my RAM was gone because I didn't shove one stick fully into its DIMM slots.

    6. Spend time considering every part.

You might be tempted to skimp on parts that may seem inconsiquential on quality, such as the power supply or the case, but these parts are just as important as your CPU and GPU. Read reviews, look at company track records, do all the research because these are parts that if they fail, you're waiting on new parts to come in.

    7. Heat is your enemy.

Big parts make big heat. If you're getting high end parts, your stock case fans will most likely prove to be too little. If you're using a CPU cooler that doesn't have thermal paste on it, look up how to apply thermal paste correctly. Try to get a case with enough clearance on the bottom so you can point your PSU out.

When parts get too hot, they bottleneck to avoid damage, but that means you're not getting the best performance. Try to get as much heat reduction that you can.

And that's about all that I can think of that I ran into building a PC without looking up enough prior to doing so and will definitely be smarter about everything on my next build.

    Upgrading our 12yo’s gpu

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 09:28 AM PST

Like it says, my husband and I are looking to upgrade his daughter's gpu for Christmas this year. We're trying to get her into playing WoW with us, but her current setup will likely not handle it very well. Any recommendations on what we should get that won't break the bank? The current one is a Radeon RX Vega 11 1GB. Processor is a Ryzen 5 2400G.

    Is a 3070 wasted on 1080p 60hz?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:34 PM PST

I've found a few good deals for black friday of pre-built (I know, I know I'll probably get roasted) PC's.

    For $1350 with a 3070

    For $1000 with a 5700 XT

I'm currently gaming on a 32" 1080p 60hz monitor. Is the 3070 overkill and will the 5700 hold up for at least a few years before I'd need a new upgrade? Is it worth shelling out the extra $350? For reference I play Dark Souls, COD, The Witcher, etc.

    Thanks!

Best available GPU under $300 that will run Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 10:23 AM PST

I currently have a GTX 680. I plan to eventually upgrade to a 3070/3080 but that doesn't seem likely with the current stock issues. I want to get a "temporary" GPU in order to play Cyberpunk 2077 on release date. Any suggestions for the best CURRENTLY AVAILABLE GPU under $300? I'd like to run Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, but I don't mind playing on low or medium.

By "temporary" I don't mean I'll return the GPU or anything, I'll just build a brand new PC when the 3070s are back in stock (as my CPU/other parts are very old anyways).

How much can you save by buying on Black Friday/Cyber Monday?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 11:16 AM PST

Planning on building a PC this December and I wanted to buy parts over Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday. Just curious how much people who have built PC's have saved in the past by buying parts at this time? My build cost is around $1200, but I'm curious to see how much I might save by getting parts this coming weekend.

    Help with my daughter's Christmas

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 07:48 AM PST

So, last year I got my daughter this pre-made desktop, as we were low on money, but her laptop was really bad, and she really enjoys pc gaming.

    https://www.newegg.com/hp-z-series-z420-business-desktops-workstations/p/1VK-001E-098Z4?Item=9SIAJP98P45971&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

So the thing I need help with is this; I have a geforce gtx 760 4gb I can throw in there, and I want to get her another 8gb of ram. The ram I can probably sort out, though if anyone can make a budget suggestion or if I should just get a 16 gb stick for it, I'd appreciate it, but the power supply is the crux. I think it has enough power, but when I first got it I tried putting the card in, but the PSU didn't have the proper wires to power the thing. Am I better off getting a (preferably not insane) new one or are there adapters that would be safe I could use from other wires from it to make it work.

I think she'd be super happy if I can get this together. It's way better than her old laptop, but I always feel so bad when she plays something and I see how choppy it plays, and she doesn't even care because she's just happy to be playing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I dont mind paying for windows but I might aswell ask around on reddit before sinking more money into windows again.

Nephew wants to replace a RX 580 with an Nvidia card for better outgoing streaming

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 08:55 AM PST

Hello, I'm asking this for my brother in law, hoping you folks can help out.

My nephew, 13, has this 8GB RX 580. He has told his dad, my brother in law, that his (outgoing) streaming is suffering while he plays so he wants a new Nvidia card "because nvidia is better at outgoing stream compression". I'm just an old sysadmin who wants kids to get off his lawn, so I figured I'd ask you folks who are wise in the ways of Twitch and such.

His PC is based around a Ryzen 5 2600, with 8GB of 2600 (that's the info I've been given, sorry if it's not enough). He is using a somewhat old 1080p screen that runs at 60Hz.

Based on those specs and that GPU, should he be having issues with outgoing streaming? Should he instead be looking at a different bottleneck, or should he reduce the quality at which he's shooting video? (I know nothing about these videos, not sure if it's youtube based with record-then-post, or twitch based with an always-on-stream setup)

The kid plays "Siege, COD, rocket league" and potentially more.

I'll try to get more info, but any observations or things to check/ask would be very gratefully received. His dad wants to know what the equivalent card to an RX 580 would be, and just how much of a difference is this going to make.

PC Randomly shut down on me and now wont turn on.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:31 PM PST

Hi, I built my PC a few years ago and have had some upgrades since then. It has been as is for around a year now without any issues.

Today, I had my PC on and it just randomly turned completely off on me. If I wait a while and try again it will flash on for just a second with some red lights on my mobo and then turn off again completely.

While I have power to the PC there is an LED on my GPU that is on that indicates it is receiving power.

It's been a while since I've used this subreddit and I'm on my phone so I'm not sure about how to format my pcpartpicker list. But here are my specs:

    Ryzen 7 2700X.
    MSI B350 PC MATE.
    GeIL Super Luce 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3000.
    Samsung 850 Evo-Series 250GB.
    Seagate Barracuda 2TB.
    Asus RTX 2070.
    ThermalTake Versa C21.
    EVGA G1 650 W 80+ Fully Modular PSU.

I have tried reseating the CPU, RAM and the GPU. I am however not much of a tech guy so I'm not sure quite what to do now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Getting more FPS than my friend despite being on 1440p aka 5600X is a great CPU!

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 07:45 AM PST

There are some games that are somewhat CPU heavy, like Mount&Blade II: Bannerlord where I get 20-25 more FPS consistently with an 5700 XT and a R5 5600X at 1440p than my friend who has an RTX 2070Super and a R5 3600XT on 1080p.

Cards should be somewhat similar in performance so it's very interesting to me to see such a huge fps gain, especially since I'm on higher resolution.

Can this be solely because of the 5600X-3600XT difference, or is this game AMD favoured? Could it be anything else?

Benchmarks show no problems with either system, temps are great, games run as intended on his system.

So I almost purchased a pre built and then I found this sub, I think I might be saved!

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 09:04 AM PST

Hey friends long story short my girlfriend is ready to finally start her first master race voyage with her own rig!

She set her self a budget of $800-$1000 and sort of left me in charge of finding the best deal with it that price range. My initial thought was to find a rig used so we could cut some costs on the price of the PC and afford her some decent peripherals. During my search for local listing I found this pc listed for $900

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-gaming-desktop-intel-core-i7-9700-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1660-ti-1tb-hard-drive-256gb-ssd-shadow-black/6349466.p?skuId=6349466

At first I was really excited as the processor, gpu, ssd, etc all seemed top shelf for the price but something wasn't sitting right with me. So then I did some more digging online and found multiple posts on this sun of that very pc with a multitude of warning saying DO NOT BUY as you could build a rig with a 2060 super for the same cost. However after a bit of searching is that really doable? It seems to me that any rig I try to throw together comes to exceed that price point.

Any help on what would be the best option for a $800-$1000 intel rig would be massively appreciated!

    New Graphics Card and CPU

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:44 PM PST

So I've bought just about all of the parts for my build. I'm getting a graphics card of my choice for Christmas, around $1000 cad. I was wondering if it's worth waiting until stock normalizes on rx 6000 cards, RTX 3000 cards and when the Ryzen 5 5600X. Currently I could get a RTX 2080 ti for between $800-$1000 cad on eBay and get a Ryzen 5 3600 XT for about $330 cad. Should I get a cheap card and cpu to hold over until the newer processors and gpus are available?

First Time Builder- Any and all suggestions appreciated!

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 02:15 PM PST

Hello all, Ive been planning to build a gaming PC for awhile now. My previous gaming machine was my college laptop purchased back in 2014, and since COVID hit Ive been playing a ton more video games. Specifically, Ive been playing a ton of Coop games with my friends, and the lag/ loading/ etc times were killer. So I guess i am just hoping to build a PC that will last 5-10 years, be primarly used in gaming, and would improve my gaming experience.

So as indicated in the title, This is my first build. Ive done a couple hours of research on the different parts, but I still honestly have no idea if what i put together is ideal. So other than the age old question of "is my build good," i have a few specific questions:

Would the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X be better in the long term or are both likely to go out of date around the same time? Along the same line, would the AMD Ryzen 5 2600 be able to perform around the same quality as the AMD Ryzen 5 3600?

Is a CPU cooler needed? I see many posts indicating that it is important that the CPU is kept from overheating, but not a lot of builds on here seem to have them.

How does one go about determining a good monitor? I want an monitor that allows my build to perform at its best so i dont want to buy a monitor that would hold back my gaming experience/ dont want to buy a monitor that is too high quality for my build.

    Father/Son build

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 02:08 PM PST

I have been planning on doing a build of my own for a while. Over the past few months, however, my son has gotten into online gaming as well, notably World of Warcraft. So, my goal has shifted towards doing a dual build so that he and I can play together. I was hoping that you fine folks could give me some advice on how to proceed. I plan on utilizing all of this sub's excellent resources, so I'm not necessarily looking for specific gear recommendations, but rather some general do's and don't's. Thanks in advance.

Question about Ram frequency and Ryzen 3600x CPU

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 02:08 PM PST

So amd says max supported memory for the 3600x is 3200mhz but I've read online the sweet spot for the 3600x is 3600mhz RAM. How can 3600mhz be the sweet spot for the cpu if 3200mhz is the max supported?
