I don't think I understand Ryzen and RAM timing. What RAM should I get with a 5800X?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 05:04 AM PST

I really want to be able to get Corsair Vengeance RGB pro but I'm hearing that the timing is bad. I'm familiar with how infinity fabric works but I don't understand how much of an impact it has.

I think I may have already gone overkill with the 5800X as I'm just going to be gaming at 1440p but I want to get the highest FPS I can at high quality while still having good value for money. However I'm willing to shill for that sweet sweet RGB.

I'm aware that RGB Pro 3600mhz at cl18 isn't the greatest option but does it matter for someone like me who will just be playing 2077? I'm not super concerned in squeezing performance out of my PC and getting the best benchmarks that I can.

If someone could steer me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it. I'd really like the RGB pro because it looks sweet but if it actually performs like crap the! I'll pass on it.

    Thank you!

Edit: Honestly I'd like to know mostly if I'd be okay with 3200mhz at cl16 for gaming and light premiere pro and Photoshop work. I'm not going to be rendering anything and the price is good for me.

Is it worth going for PCIe Gen 4 over Gen 3 for a build expected to last 4 years?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:34 AM PST

I have pretty much everything for my PC ordered except storage. I'm looking to buy a 2TB SSD to start with and I'll probably look at buying additional storage down the line if and when I need it. I'm primarily using this build for gaming as well as working in game engines like Unreal and potentially some video editing as well. Looking to have this build last at least up until the generation after next (i.e. presumably RTX 50 series time). I'm currently debating between a Samsung 970 EVO Plus and a Corsair MP600 but I'm absolutely open to other options and suggestions.

Brand new PC built sunday has given me stability issues all week. After trying at least 10 different solutions, i'm now stuck in a bootloop andI'm completely dejected. This is my first time building so I absolutely need some help

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 04:59 PM PST

Edit 2: Just to keep you guys in the loop, this morning I updated BIOS to the latest version. The build date previous was dated 5/15/20 so it was a bit outdated. To rule out RAM and CPU issues, I'm running Memtest86 with 1 stick and then will redo with 2 sticks. Currently I'm on pass 2/4, 61 minutes in and have had no restart issues nor have I had any memory issues the test has found.

Edit: I really appreciate everyone's responses here. You guys have been a tremendous help and have helped set some of my frustrations at ease. Not sure where everyone's located but it's currently late here (11pm almost) so I'm not able to reply to everyone or troubleshoot anymore tonight. However the top replies have suggested troubleshooting with Windows and Linux OS, so that gives me a game plan at least.

Tomorrow when I'm able I'll wipe the SSD again and try to install Ubuntu and see if I'm still having issues. If so then it's most likely either RAM compatibility, bad motherboard, or, if I'm unlucky, the CPU itself. If Ubuntu works fine then it's obviously Windows and I'll need to go a different route (other than the installation tool via USB)

TL;DR: PC has had stability issues all week, now won't even boot into windows and just runs a boot loop.

    Parts:

    • Ryzen 5 3600
    • MSI B550 Tomahawk Mobo
    • RTX 3070 GPU
    • Corsair Vengence LPX series 8 G Sticks x 2
    • WSD 1TB m.2 NVME SSD (1st one I had was cracked by Amazon Shipping, best buy offered a replacement)
    • BeQuiet 500DX case
    • Corsair RM850x PSU (Prior to this I used a Corsair RM750, more details on this to be followed)

I'm going to be as thorough as possible here because I'm now feeling completely hopeless, frustrated and dejected. This was my first ever PC build. After putting it off initially back over the summer, I lucked out getting a 3070 on Launch day and decided that since I did snag the 3070, I'd of course want to build a PC along with it (that was the goal, after all. If they sold out then I'd just wait until supply is normal, but I got one so here we are)

The Timeline of events (skip to 9 where the issues start occuring)

    1. My PSU (the RM750), my final part, arrived Sunday so I set up to build. Whilst nervous and excited, I built the entire computer on my mobo case to bench test it: CPU, Stock Cooler, Ram, SSD, GPU, PSu. It booted first time to BIOS. I was elated.
    2. Got to work on assembling the components in my case which also went off without a hitch, (although the PSU cables were a bit more stiff than I liked)
    3. Wired up and cable managed everything. Booted fully assembled to BIOS with no issues.
    4. Altered BiOS Settings to boot to USB Thumbdrive for Windows Installation Tool I had downloaded.
    5. Windows installed fine, all the updates were fine.
    6. Installed latest MSI chipset drivers, that also went fine.
    7. Installed the newest Nvidia 3070 Driver. Chose the option to "Update Driver" Settings. It also Installed Fine
    8. Got my new 1440p LG Monitor on Monday. Installed the free copy of Modern Warfare Warzone. Tried playing for a bit, noticed I signed into wrong Activision account, quit the game. Tried to link previous Activision / PlayStation network account to new Blizzard account. Had some network errors.
    9. Then I Encountered my 1st Black Screen Reboot.
    10. Checked all Power connections on MOBO and PSU itself. No seating issues. Checked for tension spots, no issues there either.
    11. Ran a test through bios on my M.2 NVME, no issues there. Figured it was Windows
    12. Installed a new version of the Windows Installation tool, wiped my SSD in Bios and tried to reinstall windows. It got through installation, but at the setup menu I still encountered Black-Screen Restarts.
    13. Figured it was my still PSU causing intermittent power cuts. I returned it to best buy, exchanged it for an RM850x PSU (which was actually cheaper thanks to a price match)
    14. Open-air wired it up, got it to boot and finished updating, but then at the home screen, queue more black-screen restarts. Noticed I had a BOOT-led Debug error on the MOBO. Adjusted some boot settings, confirmed my SSD was boot priority 1 and boot override was selected on that too. Tried to boot, no LED and posted fine. Just for absolute certainty I re- wiped my ssd one more time, reinstalled my OS from the thumbdrive, and had no more LED. Ran 100% fine for a solid hour, still on Open Air. Decided to call it a night and work on cable management Wednesday.
    15. Tonight, I wired the new PSU back in the case, cable managed all power cables. Booted fine. Tried updating windows: downloaded the updates fine. Installed them fine, clicked restart. Tried to restart and now its stuck in a boot loop. I tried disabling every single boot priority list except my SSD, that didn't fix the issue still.

I'm at my wits end here and frustrated beyond belief. I've saved money since May to pay for this and i'm at a complete loss for words. If anyone can help me I would be forever grateful.

Looking to slowly build a newer pc

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 10:34 AM PST

As the title above says I'm looking at build a new pc and I'm trying to score some good black Friday deals so I dont have to drop to much cash. I currently have a i5 9600k with a 2060 rtx and a asus prime z270-a motherboard. I found a intel i9 9900k for $300. Is it worth getting that even know I probably won't be getting a new motherboard for awhile probably?

What GPU do you recommend buying?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 07:28 AM PST

A little context first: I live in Uruguay and here, the prices of electronics are exorbitant. With that in mind, what GPU of the following do you recommend me?

    • Gigabyte Rtx 2060 6gb $510
    • Asus gtx 1660 6gb $425
    • Gigabyte gtx 1660 6gb $395
    • Asus Radeon rx5500 xt 8gb $375
    • Asus Radeon rx5600 xt 6gb $525

The prices are in dollars, converted from uruguayan pesos. I have a Ryzen 5 3600, msi tomahawk b450 max, 16 3400mhz ram, a decent power supply and a gtx 1060 3gb. Thanks!

No video signal until Windows boots

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:24 AM PST

So, I recently got a new graphics card, and RX 5500 XT. I'd been using the integrated graphics on an R5 2400G, so this was a huge upgrade. It runs games great, and I'm really happy with it. However, I never see the bios logo or the Windows logo while my pc is booting now; it just goes straight from no video signal to the lock screen after the computer's been on for about 20 seconds. Is there any reason that my new graphics card wouldn't be giving a video signal until windows is finished booting, and if so, are there any settings or something I could change to make it so it does? Thank you for any responses or advice!

EDIT: This is definitely something I should've mentioned previously, but my main cause for concern comes from the fact that after a windows update, the 5500 XT wouldn't give any display output at all, not even the lock screen, while the integrated card would. After a reboot it worked again, but that was what really made me concerned

    CASE: Lian Li vs Fractal?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 01:42 PM PST

I have a 2009 Lian Li case I love, the PC A71F. It's a very spacious full tower, high quality parts, and only 20lbs. I was planning to keep it for my next ryzen 5000/RTX 3000 build which I will use for video editing. I have a lot of internal HDDs.

But then comes the Fractal Meshify 2 XL. Also looks very compelling. Clearly more modern with its airflow design and dropping the 5.25" optical drives (I could move my rarely used optical drives to external USB 3 enclosure).

How's the build quality and fit and finish between these cases? I don't think I like, at least on paper, the 50% weight increase for the Meshify 2 for a case that's roughly the same size as Lian Li? I'm concerned I'll get it in hand (and shipping cases back and forth is a royal PIA) and be underwhelmed with how it compares to what I already have.

On the other hand, I'm tempted by the idea of a new modern case that will offer me increased flexibility for future build revisions, as well as higher airflow to keep thermals in control on an RTX 3090 and 5950x cooled with a Noctua DH-15.

Ryzen 3 3100 to tied me over until Ryzen 5 5000-series

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 01:40 PM PST

I wanted to build a Ryzen 5 3600 with a 1660 super a few months back now, as they were deemed sweet-spots for budget/performance, especially for gaming.

However, with the 5000-series around the corner, and 3600s being a bit pricey and low-stock. I've been holding off, and holding off. But it seems it's going to take forever for the 5000-series to get to the UK, and even when they do they'll sell out instantly at inflated prices.

I can't take my low-spec 5-year old laptop anymore*. I need to upgrade.

If I get a Ryzen 3 3100 (£100), pairing it with a 1660S, will this be okay? And if I then get a Ryzen 5600 when they release in a few months time, will the 1660s still be okay? (The GPU would be next upgrade, but likely 2022)

I don't want to get the 1660s if it'll be holding back the R5 5600. Maybe I'd be better going for a budget GPU (maybe something similar to RX 550) to pair the R3 3100, and then upgrading both CPU and GPU at the same time once everything it settled?

Be a shame to spend £100 or £200 for parts I'll replace quickly. But at this rate it'll be June next year and I'll still not have plumped for the upgrade, waiting for the next release that's about to come out.

Will use standard wraith cooler, 3600RAM, a B550 board, and a good NVME SSD, basic case with decent openings for fans, a 550W PSU (maybe get a 650W if it looks like a better GPU will be needed and require it). My aim is good value gaming PC, that I can upgrade over the years. *My current PC is SLOW, and can't run most games; minecraft is 5-10FPS!

    Give me your wisdom please!

here's a parts list I've put together so far but id really like to cut down the price a bit because I still need other peripherals like a mic, keyboard, mouse, etc. so I was wondering if there are some parts I could switch out while still keeping the performance at a decent level for gaming and possible streaming/content creating as well as like, normal computer stuff.

Selecting CPU for first build - 3960x vs 5950x - Gaming and Content Creation

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:50 AM PST

    Hello all,

I've been doing research to determine which processor would best fit my needs between the 3960x and 5950x.

I'll be doing 4k gaming with games such as Fallout 4, Skyrim, GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077, etc. I will also be editing 4k video using Adobe Premiere, editing high megapixel images in Photoshop and Lightroom. Split is about 75% games and 25% content creation.

My research has turned up not much in terms of direct comparisons.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg_xKkDoU-s

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ryzen/comments/jkxmkh/amd_ryzen_threadripper_3960x_vs_amd_ryzen_5950_x/

    https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/threadripper-vs-ryzen-for-video-editing-gaming.2585987/

    https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/AMD-Ryzen-5000-Series-CPU-Review-Roundup-1962/

The last resource linked, from Puget Systems, seems to be the best source for direct comparison for benchmarks in productivity applications. The 1st link, from YouTube, seems to indicate the 5950x outperforms the 3960x in most gaming situations.

Does anyone have any recommendations for resources directly comparing these two with any other performance benchmarks, especially gaming performance?

Any other insight into comparing these two CPUs would be a huge help. Cost is not a huge factor, but I don't want to overpay for the 3960x if I'll see reduced performance for games and could get most of the creative performance from the 5950x.

    Thank you!

Meshify C Fan setup - Where to locate top fan?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:46 AM PST

Hey, I am currently building my PC and bought the 3 pack of QL120's for the front (I know people usually go with 2 x 140's in the front of this case).

I have the 3 fans in the front setup and am obviously leaving the stock fractal rear exhaust fan. I want to put the other 120 fractal as an exhaust in the top. The problem is I don't know where it should go. My D15 is going to be in the middle position and I read that the exhaust fan shouldn't be right near it. So should I put the top exhaust towards the front of the case or the rear?

    Thanks!

Beware: G.SKILLZ Trident Z Neo 3600 2x16GB: Not supported for AMD Zen 3 on ASUS X570-i Strix gaming motherboard

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 09:00 AM PST

I'm getting a QLED DRAM orange solid led on here with the 5800X paired with the ASUS X570-i Strix using the G.SKILLZ Trident Z Neo (AMD Ryzen ready) F4-3600C18D-32GTZN

I thought my issue was coming from the fact that my motherboard hasn't been updated to support the 5800X, but I've contacted ASUS about it and they told me the F4-3600C18D-32GTZN isn't listed on their Memory QVL list https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING/Memory_QVL_for_3rd_Gen_AMD_Ryzen_with_Radeon_Graphics_X570.pdf and https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING/Memory_QVL_for_3rd_Gen_AMD_Ryzen_with_Radeon_VGA_X570.pdf

Therefore, they can't help me because it's not supported. All the other G skillz are supported, but not the one I bought. FML

I've just ordered a supported one from Asus, going to return this one.
But... I'm pretty sure I'll still have the same issue since the BIOS will still need to be updated somehow (which I can't since I don't have a spare AMD CPU, just that new 5000 series I received this week)

    New ssd to increase storage

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 12:19 PM PST

Hello I am planning to get a ssd for my boyfriend birthday right now he is using a 500 gb m2 ssd but as we all know thatd barely enough space for 2 games these days

Now My question is which ssd(or from which manufactor) should I be buying?

I was planning on spending around 50-70 euro

Also would a data ssd be better for that price range? (I expect that I could more storage for the same price than if I would buy an m2)

    Recommendations a Monitor

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 09:57 AM PST

Hey everyone, I've been in the market for a REALLY good monitor that in theory one day I can get myself a 3080FE. I have gone through many websites and have come down to one monitor (name and link below).

Desired Specs (top = most wanted / bottom = not as important)

    • 2K resolution
    • 144hz+ refresh rate
    • IPS display
    • 27in screen size
    • G-Sync compatible
    • HDR capabilities

Found: ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A 27" HDR Gaming Monitor

    Link: https://www.newegg.com/black-asus-tuf-gaming-vg27aql1a-27/p/N82E16824281067?&quicklink=true

I came to find out today that DP1.2 does not support HDR and that is the most "up-to-date" port that ASUS has included with this monitor along with HDMI 2.0. I currently use DP so at this point I feel like I should just go with the non-HDR variant because I prioritize a high frame rate over looks. Would you go with this monitor or are there some other ones out there that you guys would go with? Ideally, I will wait for Black Friday to make my purchase to save some money, but my budget is around the $450ish dollar mark.

Any Glaring Errors in my Build?

Help for the first new pc i make

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 01:39 PM PST

I there people, new member here, and to inaugurate this moment I want to ask to all of you an advice. I have, since 2015, a broken gaming pc, and because of the plague of do not have money I kinda stick with it till this day. Now I have enough money to buy a Gaming Pc that stand his name, but, as some of my friend tell me, it would be better If I bought the part and then assemble all of them, I so try to learn a bit and, with the help of this website, I tried to create a good build that I will attach to this post, everything is accepted, opinion and critics.

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600x 3.7 GHz 6 core

    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S CFM

Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4

    Memory: G.Skill rident Z RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 CL 16

Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5'' 7200RPM and Samsung 980 Pro 250(or maybe 500) GB M.2-2280 NVME

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or 6900 still kind thinking about it

Case: MSI MAG VAMPIRIC 010 ATX

Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer Gold 750 W 80+ Gold Fully Modular ATX

this is what i came for, maybe it is all wrong (possible since is the first build i ever made) that's why i'm here asking for any advice. Thank you for reading
