| Reminder: No memes, even in comments. Posted: 12 Jul 2020 12:46 AM PDT This is a friendly reminder of Rule #3: Memes, direct image links, and low effort content will be removed. This includes both posts and comments. We've had an uptick in meme comments here, and while we mods do enjoy our memes - some of us actually co-moderate a subreddit for that, /r/hardwarememes - they're not appropriate for /r/hardware. While I might give you the courteousy of a warning, technically you can get a 1-3 day tempban for such things (depending on if it was a toxic comment or a just a jesting comment). So please... refrain from these sort of comments so we don't have to be Nazi mods, OK? [link] [comments] |
| MSI scalping their own 3080s on ebay, links included. Posted: 06 Oct 2020 06:58 PM PDT As said, MSI is scalping their own 3080s on ebay under the name Starlit Partner. Browsing the Starlit Partner seller reveals that everything they sell is MSI, most (maybe all) new in a box. They have the nerve to say "We work closely with the manufacturer." Because they are literally the manufacturer. A card retailing for 759.00, potentially being sold by the manufacturer on ebay for 1359.00, and they are absolutely selling out of them. There were some available when I started looking into it and now the auction simply says 0 available, 4 sold. Even if it's legal, it's certainly dirty, and how are they not being absolutely crucified for it already? This was first posted a different sub and it was deleted. It has since been restored. /r/hardware allowed it to remain for visibility while it was unavailable at the original location. Edit: Here's an initial impressions video from the owner of the discord where this was noticed. He's been trying to help a bunch of clowns find their own 3080s, so you can imagine several being potentially scalped by the manufacturer didn't go over well. Obviously. I'm editing this in here as well. This was sent from the mod of another sub. I have no way to independently verify it, I'm not a journalist, or a youtuber, I don't have industry contacts, all that jazz.
So, if that's all correct, this is a scammer that has a ton of MSI inventory and made themselves look like MSI on ebay and Amazon, without MSI proper being aware of it or nuking them from orbit for doing so. The theory being that they operate as Micro-Star International Co., LTD, so it couldn't be them as MSI Computer Corp. Which Bloomberg lists as Micro-Star International Co., LTD. Again, I can't verify this, and it would actually be nice if this wasn't MSI. Feels strange to me that he would have flown under their radar doing that moving that much of their product exclusively, but I'm just some guy. Maybe it fell off the truck. I don't know. Final? edit: Please see the comment from moderator /u/bizude stickied below for more information. You can also refer to this thread and the comment stickied from moderator /u/Nestledrink for additional updates and information. TL;DR: It's not confirmed, but it's also not looking great for MSI. | Any good print publications/magazines? Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:51 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm an ex-PC gaming hardware journalist that now has a new vocation which takes up a lot of my time, but I would still like to keep up to date with big events and/or interesting op-ed style pieces on hardware. I've always preferred print to online with things like, for example, political news or niche subjects like philosophy. I really like monthly or bi-monthly magazines. I do use RSS feeds for news, Feedly, and watch YouTube, etc. etc., but I find print really engaging. I spend so much of my time staring at a screen that it's nice to read something on paper whenever I can. Combine this with the cohesiveness and designed-ness of an 'issue', and it's definitely something I'm looking for. Does anyone have any recommendations for hardware-specific (or perhaps tech-specific that still contains some hardware) print magazine subscriptions? I live in the UK, so preferably one that's easily available over here, too. (I specified my reasons for wanting this at the start of this post to pre-empt and rebut the possible "Just read online, dummy" response). [link] [comments] |
